Title
Landlord Opens Fire On Medical Student Over House Rules.
Description
Watch this police interrogation with intense raw interrogation from the interrogation room as police conduct a full interrogation of a suspect. This raw interrogation footage captures every moment of the suspect interview, complete with deception detection techniques, and criminal psychology in true JCS style interrogation.
The Background
Key people: John Sweeney (landlord, age ~32–34 at the time), owner of a single-family home in the 5500 block of North Iroquois Avenue, Glendale, Wisconsin (near Bayshore Mall). His tenant (a woman who rented the basement since about February 2025). Andrew Martin (age 31, medical student more than halfway through his M.D. program), the tenant’s boyfriend since late February 2025.
Relationships: Sweeney and the tenant shared the home (she paid rent). Martin was a frequent visitor. Sweeney disliked Martin’s presence, viewing him as a “rando”/stranger and having previously warned the tenant against such guests, especially with children/family sometimes present.
Motive: Dispute over house rules and Martin’s presence. Tension built from Sweeney’s objections to overnight guests and parking issues; an earlier confrontation that day involved threats and a warning shot. Self-defense was claimed by Sweeney but rejected by the jury.
The Crime
Date and location: Evening of May 18, 2025 (around 7:45–7:51 p.m.), on the driveway/garage area of Sweeney’s home on the 5500 block of North Iroquois Avenue, Glendale, WI.
Sequence: Martin spent the prior night at the home (after drinking, to avoid driving). Morning argument over parking (Martin blocked Sweeney’s car) and house rules; Sweeney displayed a gun on his hip and fired a warning shot into the ground as Martin left. Later that day, the tenant texted she was moving out and returned to collect belongings. Martin arrived wanting to talk/“squash” the issue. Argument escalated in the garage/driveway area. Sweeney shot Martin a total of seven times with a 9mm handgun (autopsy confirmed). Martin was found face-down in a pool of blood near the open garage door and pronounced dead at the scene.
Planning/tampering: No evidence of long-term calculated planning reported. Sweeney was unusually carrying a holstered gun at home that day (per tenant). A friend was on FaceTime with Sweeney during the incident and heard argument, tussling, and shots; Sweeney later said Martin was “bleeding out.” No reports of scene tampering.
The Investigation
Suspect behavior: Sweeney exited the house with hands raised when police arrived, immediately admitted he was the shooter, stated Martin came into the garage and punched him so he “had no choice,” and directed officers to the gun inside. He reported not being severely injured. In later interview, he described Martin punching him in the head, then reaching for the gun and continuing to shoot when Martin allegedly tried to take it. He initially omitted the morning warning shot until asked.
Key evidence: Seven 9mm Luger shell casings in the driveway and garage; 9mm handgun recovered inside the home. Martin’s body near the garage door; keys, wallet, and holstered knife found in Martin’s pocket (Sweeney never claimed belief that Martin had or threatened with a weapon). Tenant’s account (heard raised voices, three shots, then more while calling 911; saw blood and Sweeney with the gun). FaceTime friend heard the confrontation and Sweeney’s statements. Text messages about the tenant moving out and the earlier gun incident. Autopsy: seven gunshot wounds.
Inconsistencies: Sweeney’s self-defense claim (physical attack requiring multiple shots) versus tenant’s partial observations and the friend’s audio (argument then shots); jury rejected self-defense. Sweeney did not mention any weapon threat from Martin. Tenant noted the holstered gun was atypical for Sweeney at home.
Conviction and Sentencing
Charges: Initially first-degree reckless homicide by use of a dangerous weapon (Class B felony). Trial in Milwaukee County Circuit Court (began ~Oct. 13, 2025; verdict Oct. 16, 2025, fourth day).
Verdict: Guilty of second-degree reckless homicide (Class B felony). Self-defense claim rejected by the jury.
Sentencing: December 12, 2025, before Judge David Borowski. 17 years initial confinement in prison + 8 years extended supervision. Credit for 209 days already served. Judge called Sweeney a danger to the community and noted the killing was unnecessary; Sweeney expressed the act stemmed from fear/desperation but did not plead guilty or fully accept responsibility at trial. Restitution hearing set for February 2026. No co-defendants
