Title
High Speed pursuit with a wanna be COP - Dodge Charger flashing blue lights gets the PIT Maneuver
Description
Trooper's Narrative: On Saturday, August 19, 2023, the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Department advised me, Corporal Todd Harris, that a black Dodge Charger was attempting to stop motorist on SH 181 with the use of “blue lights” on the dash area of the vehicle. The reporting party advised that the vehicle had attempted to stop them as they were southbound on SH 181. The caller advised that the vehicle “blacked out” and turned back north on SH 181. Deputies and I were in the area and attempted to locate the vehicle. I checked SH 77 with no contact and was near the intersection of SH 77 and SH 18 when I observed a black Dodge Charger turn from SH 18 onto SH 77. I turned around on the vehicle, activated my emergency lights and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle accelerated south bound on SH 77 with no indication of stopping. The driver continued to flee southbound on SH 77 at a high rate of speed, many times exceeding 125 mph. The steep terrain of the roadside of SH 77 as well as oncoming and same direction traffic prevented a safe execution of a Tactical Vehicle Intervention or TVI maneuver. I remained close with the vehicle and was joined by Trooper Clint Henderson as he began to call the pursuit to ASP dispatch. The vehicle continued southbound on SH 77, and knowing the roadway would intersect with SH 140, I planned to execute a TVI as the vehicle slowed for the intersection of SH 77 and SH 140. The vehicle slowed for the intersection but did not stop. The vehicle crossed SH 140 onto South CR 209. The driver again accelerated down the gravel roadway, and I was able to position and safely execute a TVI with no damage to my unit and minimal scuffs to the fleeing vehicle’s left rear fender. The driver fled into a cotton field on the east side of the roadway and ran approximately 200 yards into the field before falling to the ground. The fleeing suspect regained his footing and attempted to flee again. I deployed my CEW, striking the suspect in the upper and lower back. The suspect was unable to continue and was taken into custody by myself and Trooper Henderson. The suspect was transported to the Mississippi County Detention Center. A search of the vehicle revealed a foil pouch with approximately 8 grams of Marijuana, two catalytic convertors of unknown origin were found in the trunk. The suspect had $873.00 in cash on his person and was counted on video and turned into the detention center with his personal belongings.
