Title
When A Bar Wristband Turns A Routine Stop Into A DWI
Description
Just after 6 PM on a May evening, a Highlands, New Jersey officer watched an older Dodge Caliber drift across the lines on Route 36 — twice — then tailgate the car in front of it. He pulled it over. The driver was 20 years old, a year under the drinking age, and had just left a bar on the shore.
Then the real chaos started — from the passenger seat.
Over the next two hours of bodycam, the driver admitted to drinking, failed all four field sobriety tests, and was arrested for DUI — while her passenger grabbed the keys, threw them on the dash, and kept climbing out of the car. And at the station, the driver refused the breath test entirely, adding a second charge on top of the first.
This is the full breakdown of how one traffic stop turned into five summonses — straight from the records.
Those were the charges filed that night; the court outcome is a matter of record. An arrest is an accusation, not a verdict, and all individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
If the passenger had just stayed quiet — would any of it have gone differently? Let me know in the comments.
