San Antonio Police Critical Incident Video Release: 5300 Buena Vista St.
Description
Consistent with our Critical Incident Video Release Procedure, SAPD is releasing video from an Officer Involved Shooting that occurred on September 1, 2026. Below is a brief synopsis:
At approximately 10:45 p.m., Street Crimes officers riding in the same unit attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation. As the vehicle came to a stop, the suspect exited the passenger’s side of the vehicle and fled on foot. The cover officer pursued the suspect on foot while the primary officer attempted to detain the driver of the vehicle. The cover officer who pursued the suspect on foot from the vehicle attempted to take him into custody, at which time a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the officer felt a gun on the suspect’s waistline. The officer tried to grab the gun, but the suspect continued to struggle and placed his hand on the weapon. The officer discharged his firearm multiple times, striking the suspect. The suspect fled the scene but was subsequently located hiding in a bush at the 5300 block of Monterey St. Life-saving measures were performed on the suspect, and he was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. No officers or bystanders were injured. The 18-year-old suspect, Joe Anthony Guzman, was charged with Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer.
The officer involved has 7 years of service. He has been placed on administrative duty until further notice. The SAPD Shooting Team and the Internal Affairs Unit are conducting separate but concurrent investigations. The findings will be forwarded to the Bexar County District Attorney’s office for an independent review.
