Title
He Thought It Was Just a DUI — Then the Police Ran His Name
Description
A Florida DUI traffic stop led to the arrest of a wanted Indiana fugitive after Flagler County deputies stopped a reckless driver who was allegedly driving the wrong way, running a red light, and driving without his headlights on. Police bodycam footage captures what authorities say became the man's fifth DUI arrest — before deputies discovered he was wanted in Indiana on serious felony charges.
Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputies responded after a citizen reported a reckless driver near State Road 100 and Old Kings Road in Palm Coast, Florida. Deputies located a blue Ford pickup leaving a RaceTrac through an entrance marked with a do-not-enter sign before allegedly crossing multiple lanes and running a red light while making a U-turn.
Deputies identified the driver as 60-year-old Howard Johnson. According to FCSO, Johnson appeared nervous, was slurring his speech, smelled strongly of alcohol, and had an open beer can on the passenger-side floorboard.
During the DUI investigation, Johnson struggled with portions of the field sobriety exercises. Deputies ultimately arrested him for DUI and driving with a suspended license.
But the DUI wasn't his only problem.
According to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, Johnson had four previous DUI convictions in Indiana and was also wanted out of Lake County, Indiana, on charges including dealing cocaine, possession of a firearm by a violent felon, and operating a vehicle while impaired endangering a person.
Johnson was held on an $81,000 bond for his Flagler County charges while awaiting extradition to Indiana.
