Daytona Beach carjacking arrest: 8/14/23
Description
A Daytona Beach carjacking suspect who stole a gas station customer’s car at gunpoint Monday morning was tracked down and taken into custody by SWAT deputies after attempting to hide in a warehouse building about 3 miles away.
After almost an hour of attempts to convince 42-year-old Anthony Galloway (DOB 7/12/1981) to come outside with his hands up, SWAT units pried open a locked door and arrested him around 10:50 a.m.
The carjacking was reported around 8:23 a.m. at a BP gas station at 1094 Derbyshire Road. The victim, who was pumping gas at the time of the robbery, told deputies the suspect was armed with a handgun when he approached, demanding his money and car keys.
The victim said the suspect told him to “keep pumping the gas or I will shoot you.” Then the suspect drove off in the silver Toyota Corolla heading south on Derbyshire.
Deputies quickly located video surveillance footage of the incident and a clear view of the suspect, later identified as Galloway. The Corolla was soon found unoccupied outside an apartment complex on Brentwood Drive, where the suspect ran into an apartment building and then jumped out of a back second-story window.
From there, witnesses reported he ran into the warehouse in the area of 504 Mason Ave., along the Florida East Coast railroad. FEC stopped all trains and traffic was blocked in the area while deputies and Daytona Beach police surrounded the facility. A video feed from inside the building provided a live view of what the suspect was doing inside.
After an extended time of no compliance with law enforcement commands to come outside and surrender, SWAT made entry and took Galloway into custody without further incident. He was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center for evaluation and treatment of cuts that were believed to be sustained during the break-in and/or jump from the nearby apartment. His criminal charges are being finalized at this time and he will be transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail after receiving medical clearance.
