Behind the Scenes: Metropolitan Explosive Disposal Unit's Maritime Operations Training
Description
The Metropolitan Explosive Disposal Unit (MEDU) holds annual Maritime Operations Sustainment Training, a vital aspect of their operations. The primary focus of the MEDU is to identify, transport, and dispose of criminal and hazardous explosives within the Portland metropolitan area. This specialized unit comprises highly trained bomb technicians and skilled Explosive Detection Canine Teams from various agencies, including the Portland Police Bureau, Gresham Police Department, Clark County Sheriff's Office, Vancouver Police Department, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Port of Portland, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). The MEDU operates under the guidance of a dedicated full-time supervisor from the Portland Police Bureau and is available round-the-clock, with members being on-call 24 hours a day, ensuring a prompt response to any potential threats. As part of their training exercises, MEDU personnel and their highly-trained canine teams actively engage in waterborne scenarios in collaboration with esteemed partners such as the United States Coast Guard, Port of Portland Fire, and Clark County Sheriff's Office. By working together with these agencies, the MEDU continues to enhance their preparedness and effectiveness in safeguarding the maritime security of the region.
