Title
Fleeing Is a Felony
Description
As a part of the Milwaukee Police Department's Keep MKE's Streets Safe initiative, MPD will feature a driver who has been arrested, charged, convicted and sentenced for felony reckless driving and/or fleeing from police. This week we are featuring Jalen D. Lewis.
On February 8, 2019, MPD officers were dispatched to a shots fired call near the 3200 block of West Hampton Ave. The caller reported that the suspects had followed them into an alley. As MPD officers arrived, a squad drove into the alley and observed a blue Jeep driven by Lewis flee from the officers at a high rate of speed.
Believing that Lewis was involved in the shots fired call, officers activated their lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicle. Lewis refused to pull over and led officers in a vehicle pursuit. During the pursuit, Lewis reached speeds of 80 miles per hour and disregarded multiple traffic laws. Lewis eventually pulled over near the 2800 block of West Ruby St., where he was taken into custody.
On February 12, 2019, Lewis was criminally charged by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office for Vehicle Operator Flee/Elude Officer.
On May 26, 2019, MPD officers observed a stolen vehicle near the 6000 block of West Fond du Lac Ave. The officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop; however, the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Lewis, refused to pull over and led officers on another vehicle pursuit. Lewis crashed into a tree near the 5100 block of North Sherman Blvd and was taken into custody after leading officers on a 2.4 mile pursuit.
On May 31, 2019, Lewis was criminally charged for Operator Flee/Elude Officer – Bodily Harm or Property Damage.
Lewis is one of over 30 offenders who have been arrested twice or more in 2019 for fleeing from Milwaukee Police.
