Title
Evil Man Kills Sweet Lady, Steals Her Vehicle And Disguises Himself To Remove Body
Description
Watch this police interrogation with intense raw interrogation from the interrogation room as police conduct a full interrogation of a suspect. This raw interrogation footage captures every moment of the suspect interview, complete with deception detection techniques, and criminal psychology in true JCS style interrogation.
1. The Background: Key people involved, their relationships, and the motive
Defendant: Michael J. Olson, age 35 (at the time); resident of Coventry Township / Akron area (Phyllis Avenue near Portage Lakes); worked as a local handyman.
Victim: Mary Kay “Katie” Wohlfarth, age 68; Akron resident and well-known local antiques dealer who also rented a storage unit at the same facility.
Relationship: Acquaintances. Olson had previously done handyman work for Wohlfarth. They both rented units at the same self-storage facility on East Tallmadge Avenue in Akron’s North Hill neighborhood (her unit was across from his/his father’s). No prior reported disputes or violence between them. Olson had a prior 2015 domestic-violence charge (amended to disorderly conduct).
Motive: No clear personal motive established. Prosecutors described it as a brutal, opportunistic attack. Olson later stated in court that drug use was a “big factor” but took full responsibility and blamed only himself.
2. The Crime: Specific details of the event, including date, location, and any calculated planning or tampering
Date: On or about June 17–19, 2019 (family last spoke with her June 17; body found June 19).
Location: Self-storage facility in the 500 block of East Tallmadge Avenue, Akron, Ohio (North Hill neighborhood). Body discovered inside a storage unit rented by Olson (or his father).
Sequence (per prosecutors and police): Wohlfarth helped Olson clean and vacuum his storage unit. As she emptied a shop vacuum into a Dumpster, Olson waited and then attacked her. He beat her to death (blunt-force trauma to the head and neck), sexually assaulted her, and left her body locked inside the storage unit. He then took her 2012 Kia Sedona minivan.
Planning/tampering: He locked the body in the unit and fled in her vehicle (captured on facility surveillance). No extensive staging reported beyond concealing the body in the unit. Medical examiner ruled cause of death blunt-force trauma to the head and neck; manner homicide. Rape was also charged and admitted.
3. The Investigation: Suspect behavior, key evidence found (digital or physical), and inconsistencies in stories
Suspect behavior: Olson was seen on surveillance driving Wohlfarth’s Kia Sedona away from the facility. The vehicle was later recovered on Whittier Avenue (West Akron). He was arrested at his home by Summit County Sheriff’s deputies on June 19. He confessed to Akron detectives that day that he killed her.
Key evidence:
Facility surveillance video showing Olson entering the area/unit and driving away in the victim’s minivan.
911 call from a facility-related individual reporting Wohlfarth missing and providing video of an unauthorized person entering her unit.
Body recovered inside Olson’s storage unit.
Medical examiner findings (blunt-force trauma + evidence supporting rape charge).
Olson’s confession.
Theft of the vehicle.
Inconsistencies/stories: Initial police notes indicated no known motive. Olson later admitted drug use played a role but accepted full blame. He initially pleaded not guilty but later entered a plea agreement. Family members noted an odd message from Wohlfarth that they later viewed as a possible “breadcrumb,” but it was not a primary investigative focus. No major contradictions in the core evidence were publicly detailed.
4. Conviction and Sentencing: Trial dates, specific verdicts for each defendant, and their final sentences
Charges (Summit County grand jury indictment, August 2019): Aggravated murder (special felony), rape (F1), gross abuse of a corpse (F5), grand theft of a motor vehicle (F4), and trespass in a habitation (F4). Death-penalty specifications were possible but not pursued after plea discussions.
Court process: Arrested June 19, 2019; initial not-guilty plea in Akron Municipal Court (bond $1 million). Waived speedy grand-jury timeline. Indicted August 20, 2019. Entered into a plea agreement approved by the victim’s family and investigators.
Plea and sentencing (August 27, 2019): Pleaded guilty before Summit County Common Pleas Judge Amy Corrigall Jones to all charges. In exchange, he avoided a potential death sentence.
Sentence: Life in prison without the possibility of parole on the aggravated murder count, plus more than 20 additional years to be served consecutively on the remaining charges. Olson offered “deepest apologies” in court and acknowledged personal responsibility. Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh described him as a “brutal, cold-blooded killer” and stated the community was safer with him imprisoned for life. No other defendants.
