Title
Entitled Killer Denies DNA Evidence, Thinks The Cops Believe Him
Description
Watch this police interrogation with intense raw interrogation from the interrogation room as police conduct a full interrogation of a suspect. This raw interrogation footage captures every moment of the suspect interview, complete with deception detection techniques, and criminal psychology in true JCS style interrogation.
The Background
Sarah Yarborough, 16, was an honor student and drill-team member at Federal Way High School.
On December 14, 1991, she drove her father’s car to meet teammates for a competition.
Patrick Leon Nicholas, then 27, lived nearby. He had prior convictions for first-degree rape and attempted first-degree rape. They were strangers.
The jury later found the killing sexually motivated and did not find premeditation.
The Crime
She arrived early, about 8:10 a.m., and parked in a rear lot. The bus was not due until about 9 a.m.
Her body was found that morning in brush about 100 yards from her car. A jogger had seen a man kneeling beside a motionless girl and kept going. Two boys then saw a man leave the bushes and found her.
She died from manual and ligature strangulation; her nylons were around her neck. Police believed she was lured or taken there. No evidence tampering was reported.
The Investigation
Sketches produced thousands of tips, but no arrest for decades. Crime-scene DNA did not match CODIS.
In 2019, forensic genealogy pointed to Nicholas and a brother. The brother was excluded. DNA from discarded cigarette butts and a napkin matched the scene.
Nicholas, then 55, was arrested in October 2019 in Kent. The case rested on DNA, witness descriptions, and the scene. No detailed confession was reported.
Conviction and Sentencing
On May 10, 2023, a King County jury acquitted him of premeditated murder and convicted him of first-degree felony murder and second-degree murder, both with sexual motivation.
On May 25, 2023, he was sentenced to 45 years and 8 months, above the standard range, plus a no-contact order. He is not eligible for parole and can earn only limited early release.
In May 2025, the Court of Appeals affirmed the convictions and sent the exceptional sentence back for resentencing. He remains incarcerated.
