The Background
Braxton Phillips, 23, of Hobart, Wisconsin, was shot and killed on March 1, 2023.
Prez Wade, then turning 21 that day, was Phillips’s best friend. Wade was later convicted of the shooting.
Keilana Marie Brunette (born June 19, 2002), of Green Bay, was the mother of Wade’s child.
According to the complaint, text messages showed Wade and Brunette arguing about her relationship with Phillips.
A witness told police that Phillips had gotten involved in Wade and Brunette’s relationship, including telling Brunette that Wade had cheated, and that Wade said he had thought about shooting Phillips before the killing.
The same witness said Wade talked about making the shooting look unintentional.
The Crime
Date and place: March 1, 2023, Creekwood Apartments, 2856 Viking Drive, Apt. 1C, Ashwaubenon, Brown County, Wisconsin. Phillips was staying in a friend’s apartment.
Wade and Phillips had been together earlier that day for Wade’s 21st birthday. Wade later said he was drunk.
Wade told police he shot Phillips with Wade’s own gun, which Phillips had been borrowing, while they were sitting together. He demonstrated putting an arm around Phillips and pulling the trigger. He said Phillips yelled that he was shot, went to the door, came back, and collapsed, and that Wade thought at first he was faking.
A 911 caller reported hearing a gunshot at the Viking Drive apartments at about 6:21 a.m. Wade said he called police but was too scared to say he was there, then left. Phillips was found without a pulse by the apartment resident at about 9:31 p.m.
Alleged planning, from a witness statement in the complaint: two guns were in the apartment, and Wade removed the bullets from the gun Phillips had and returned it empty so Phillips could not shoot back. The witness also said Wade discussed how to make it look unintentional.
After the shooting, surveillance and phone records placed Brunette at the apartment picking Wade up. Footage showed a bag with two guns thrown from a moving car on Highway 29. One of those guns was the one used to kill Phillips.
The Investigation
Ashwaubenon Public Safety investigated. Wade was interviewed at the Brown County Jail on March 9, 2023, eight days after the shooting, and admitted firing the shot while calling it accidental.
Investigators said jail calls and messages with Brunette discussed getting rid of his phone and guns. He asked her to destroy his phone and SIM card, which could place him at the apartment.
Brunette denied wrongdoing for months and, according to prosecutors, lied to help Wade. In an interview in late June 2023 she admitted she had been misleading police, including about removing the SIM card and destroying phones.
Phone records and Creekwood camera footage put her at the scene around the time of the killing.
The guns thrown from the car were recovered. A blood sample from Wade’s shoes matched Phillips, according to the complaint.
Prosecutors contrasted Wade’s “accidental” account with witness statements and communications they said showed intent, including that he had thought about shooting Phillips and had unloaded Phillips’s gun.
Conviction and Sentencing
Wade was charged with first-degree intentional homicide (mandatory life if convicted), plus bail jumping and obstructing. On September 23, 2024, he pleaded guilty to reduced charges: first-degree reckless homicide and bail jumping. Prosecutors had recommended 35 years in prison and 20 years of extended supervision.
On November 22, 2024, Judge Tammy Jo Hock sentenced Wade to 35 years in prison and 20 years of extended supervision.
Brunette was initially referred for party-to-a-crime intentional homicide, harboring or aiding a felon, and multiple obstructing counts (Brown County case 23CF1207). She was convicted of three counts of aiding a felon and three counts of obstructing an officer.
On October 4, 2024, Judge Beau Liegeois sentenced her to six years in prison, five years of extended supervision, and five years of probation. She apologized in court for her role.
