Title
"Don't Arrest Me — I Have a Date"
Description
On the night of August 1, 2023, Patrolman Kristopher Burke of the Barnegat Township Police Department clocked a grey 2019 Honda HR-V doing 52 mph in a 35 zone near Route 9 and Hillside Avenue in Ocean County, New Jersey. When he walked up to the window, the driver told him where she was going — out to Long Beach Island, to meet her date. She never got there. Patrolman Burke reported the odour of alcohol, she admitted drinking earlier that evening, and after field sobriety exercises on the shoulder of Route 9 she was placed under arrest for DUI. Her car was impounded on a mandatory 12-hour hold under John's Law. At the station she was read the Standard Statement and refused to provide breath samples — which in New Jersey is its own separate offence. Hours later she was released to her ex-husband, who signed for her.
