International Student Hits Parked Car Before Failing DUI Tests

What began as a traffic crash investigation quickly turned into a DUI investigation when officers observed the driver's driving behaviour and discovered alcohol inside the vehicle. A Drug Recognition Expert was called to the scene to evaluate the driver and conduct standardized field sobriety exercises. During the investigation, the driver identified himself as an international student from India attending the University of Central Florida (UCF). He acknowledged consuming alcohol but argued that his body weight and the amount he had consumed meant he was still legally able to drive. Officers explained that they could not determine his exact blood alcohol concentration simply by looking at him and instead evaluated his driving behaviour, statements, and performance during the sobriety tests. The bodycam footage captures the entire encounter, including the initial parking garage incident, damage to the parked vehicle, questioning about alcohol consumption, field sobriety testing, confusion over the instructions, and the moments leading up to the arrest. After the field sobriety exercises, officers placed the driver under arrest for driving under the influence. He was transported to the Orange County DUI Testing Centre, where he provided a breath sample registering 0.135 BAC, above Florida's legal limit of 0.08. He was later transported to the Orange County Jail and booked on a DUI charge.
