Title
Retired Prison Guard Kills Ex, Thinks He's Above The Law (He's Not)
Description
Watch this police interrogation with intense raw interrogation from the interrogation room as police conduct a full interrogation of a suspect. This raw interrogation footage captures every moment of the suspect interview, complete with deception detection techniques, and criminal psychology in true JCS style interrogation.
The Background
Carl Hayden (also known as “Whitey”), then about 65, of South Webster, Ohio; former corrections officer at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility.
Amber Piguet (court records also use “Piquet”), 25, of Wheelersburg, Ohio.
They had lived together and shared a young daughter, Sadie (about 2 at the time of the crime). Amber also had another young child, Dallas.
In October 2016 Amber moved out with the children into a trailer owned by Eric and Tonda Martin near the intersection of Martin and Piguet roads in Scioto County.
A custody and visitation case was pending. A mediation hearing on custody occurred the same day as the shooting.
Witnesses and acquaintances described an escalating custody dispute, prior harassment, and stalking. Neighbors and others described Hayden as obsessed with Amber, with that behavior intensifying before her death.
Motive presented at trial: domestic conflict over the breakup and custody of their child, with evidence of prior calculation and design.
The Crime
Date and time: evening of January 9, 2017, first 911 call at about 7:04 p.m.
Location: trailer on Piquet Road in the Wheelersburg area, Scioto County, Ohio.
Neighbor Kayla Rozell reported seeing a man trying to force entry into the trailer, then hearing gunshots, then seeing the man flee in a red or maroon van.
A child inside the home (Amber’s 7-year-old niece) also called 911 and reported that her aunt had been shot. Three children age 7 and under were in the home and were not physically injured.
Deputies found the door forced. Amber was found in a bedroom; she had been shot multiple times. Shots were fired through a bedroom window as well. Tonda Martin was with her when deputies arrived.
Planning evidence later used at trial included purchase of a quieter red/maroon van about six weeks earlier (after comments about needing a quieter vehicle than a truck) and presence in the neighborhood.
The Investigation
Hayden was identified by the neighbor’s description of the man and the van, prior familiarity from the neighborhood, and the custody connection. He was arrested the same night in South Webster, around 10 p.m. Bond was set at $500,000.
Neighbors reported seeing a silver truck arrive at Hayden’s property and a red/maroon van leave around a time consistent with the shooting.
A Glock recovered from a barn belonging to Jerry Hammonds matched a gun box and paperwork found at Hayden’s house. DNA on the trigger matched Hayden. Fired cartridge casings at the scene were matched to that pistol; recovered projectiles were consistent with it.
Additional testimony described stalking-type conduct and statements about approaching Amber unnoticed. The appeals court later treated the case as supported by overwhelming physical and circumstantial evidence even after excluding certain child identifications that had been admitted at trial.
Hayden was indicted on aggravated murder, murder, four counts of felonious assault, menacing by stalking, and improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation, all with firearm specifications where applicable.
Conviction and Sentencing
Jury trial in Scioto County Common Pleas Court, late November 2017. Verdict on November 30, 2017: guilty on all counts presented.
Immediate sentencing: life without parole. After merger of the murder count and some assault counts, the final sentence was life without parole plus 22 years.
Delayed appeal: State v. Hayden, 2019-Ohio-1926 (4th Dist., May 17, 2019). The court found an evidentiary error regarding certain hearsay/child statements but held it harmless because of overwhelming other evidence of prior calculation and design. Convictions and sentence affirmed.
