Do you have problems you know of? Not blind in any eye? Wear glasses or contacts? Very good. What I want you to do is put your feet together for me like this so they aren't touching. The first thing I want you to do is just tilt your head back looking in the sky. A little bit more. Okay. I want you to close your eyes and I want you to just try to relax. So, you want me to relax? >> Sorry. Tilt your head back. Tilt your head back for me. Okay. You can open your eyes. You see that red light on my pen? >> I do. I want you to follow that with your eyes. Eyes all the way up. Don't move your head. Do you understand? >> Yes. Up and down now, okay? Just your eyes. Couple circles around your face now and I want you to follow it as I'm moving it around the circle. And then I'm going to start moving it towards the bridge of your nose like this. Okay? It's not going to touch you. It's going to feel like your eyes want to cross. All right. One more time. >> All right. What's your name again? All right, I'm seeing some signs of impairment. I'm going to give you the opportunity to show me you're okay to be driving. >> Okay, yes. Would you mind going through some additional field sobriety exercises for me? >> yes. Okay. I'm going to get you set up and then we're going to go ahead and probably going to do it over this parking lot. Hold on a second. Let me confirm with my partner, yeah. Can I take my shoes off for it? So, he's going to give you the instructions. Um at one point I'll ask if you want to take off your shoes. Cuz these are like slippery. Yeah, do you have any sneakers in the car or I have my work shoes. It's whatever you feel more comfortable walking in. I'll get my socks. Okay. But he'll explain everything for you, okay. All right, come on over. Are you comfortable in those shoes or are you going to take them off? >> off. Yeah, if you want to take them off just leave them over there. All right, let's start by asking you a few personal questions. Can you state your full name again for me? And what race do you identify with? Uh white. What's your date of birth? Birth? Uh do you have any physical defects? Physical defects? >> Mhm, no. Are you sick or injured right now? I'm not. Are you taking any medications prescribed to you by a doctor? Um I had like a ovarian cyst that ruptured and I'm taking like an antibiotic, but it's >> Antibiotics? Yeah. Okay. Um are you diabetic? I'm not, no. Do you take insulin? Wear glasses or contacts? What's your highest level of education? Uh I'm in I'm in college. I go to USF. You go to USF? I do. Okay. Have you consumed any alcoholic beverages in the past 24 hours? All right, so this first exercise I'm going to do with you is called the walk and turn. Mhm. What I'm going to do is put you in a starting position. Okay. Once I put you in a starting position, I don't want you to move from your starting position, okay? >> Okay. Now, this might sound like a silly question, but do you know your left from your right? >> Yes. Which one's your right? This is my right. >> Which one's your left? >> You got it. You see this line of tape that's in front of you? >> Do you see anything that would prevent you from walking that line of tape in your path holes, rocks, or sticks like that in the way? You know? Okay. Do you feel there's any reason why you can't walk on that line? All right. Can you back up just a little bit for me? What I want you to do to start position is going to look like this. Go ahead and place your left foot on the line for me. Take your right foot, place it directly in front of your left foot with the heel of your right foot touching toes of your left. Hands down at your sides. And I want you to remain in this position while I give you further instructions. Do you understand? Don't start anything until I tell you to do so. Do you understand the instructions so far? Very good. For this exercise, when I tell you to begin, you're going to take nine heel-to-toe steps down this line. At the end of your ninth step, you're going to make a turn which I'm going to demonstrate for you. And you're going to take nine more heel-to-toe steps back down the line. >> Yes. I'm going to demonstrate what it's going to look like. One, two, three, four, five, so on until you get to nine. Once you get to nine, leave your front foot on the line, take your back foot off, make a series of small steps just like this to turn yourself around. My back foot? While keeping your front foot on the line. Okay. And then once you complete the turn, go ahead and return back down the line with nine more heel-to-toe steps. This back foot's your first step. I'll show you what it looks like again, okay? One, two, three, four, five, and so on until you get to nine. While you're doing this, I want you to keep your hands down at your sides. I want you to watch your feet at all times while you're walking. Count each step out loud so I can hear you. And once you start this exercise, I don't want you to stop until you feel you've completed it. All right. Do you understand the instructions? Any questions? >> No questions. Okay. When you're ready, you can begin. Two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. Nine, eight, seven, six, five, All right. This next exercise is called the one leg stand. What I want you to do is put your left foot on the line like that, and your other foot right next to it, just like you're standing, hands down at your sides. Now, I want you to remain in this position while I give you further instructions. Do you understand? Don't start anything until I tell you to do so. Do you understand the instructions so far? Very good. For this exercise, when I tell you to begin, you're going to raise a leg of your choice approximately 6 in off the ground, which is about the height of a soda can or a normal dollar power bill, okay? So, it'll look just like this. Yes. You're going to point your right foot forward so the foot is parallel with the ground. I want you to keep both your legs straight and your hands down at your sides. While holding this position, I want you to look down at your raised foot and count out loud in the following manner: 1,001, 1,002, 1,003, and so on, until I tell you to stop counting. Okay? Now, during the exercise, I want you to keep your hands down at your sides. I use them for balance. I don't want you to sway. I don't want you to hop. I don't want you to put your foot down. If you happen to drop your foot, like I just did, for example, and if that was 1,005, just pick it back up, continue counting where you left off. Do I count to a certain number? You don't have to start over. So, you're going to continue counting until I tell you to stop. >> Okay. Okay? So, if this was 1,005, pick it right back up, 1,006, 1,007, 1,008, and so on, until I tell you to stop counting. Okay. Do you understand the instructions? Any questions? No questions. Okay. For my reference, which leg will you be using to raise to raise up? Don't do anything yet. Okay, cool. Back in that starting position for me. I'm going to lift up my right foot. Down at my right foot. I will start my time when you pick up your leg and begin counting out loud. Whenever you're ready. 1,001, 1,002, 1,003, 1,004, 1,005, 1,006, Leg straight. 1,007, 1,008, 1,009, 1,010, 1,011, 1,012, You can stop. Okay. This next exercise called finger to nose, okay? So, I'm going to have you stand just like you are, feet together, heels and toes are touching like mine. Bring your hands up like this, close them, extend your pointer fingers, bring your hands down, and turn your palms forward just like this. This is the starting position, okay? I want you to remain this position while I give you further instructions. Do you understand? >> Yes. Very good. When I tell you to begin, you're going to tilt your head back and close your eyes. Don't do anything yet. You're going to hear me say left or right. When you hear me say left, I want you to bring your left hand up, touch the tip of your left index finger to the tip of your nose, and immediately return it down to your side in one fluid motion. When you hear me say right, I want you to bring your right hand up, touch the tip of your right index finger to the tip of your nose, and immediately return it down to your side in one fluid motion. All right? Now, for the purpose of this exercise, what I mean by the tips of your fingers, these are the tips of your fingers, okay? So, I use Don't do anything yet, just listen. These are the tips. This is the pad, these are your sides, this is your nail, knuckle. I don't want you to use any of that. You use your tip of your finger to the tip of your nose. Do you understand the instructions? Any questions? >> Questions. All right. So, you're here, palm down. Go ahead and begin. Do you remember what you're supposed to do when you hear begin? I don't know. Tilt your head back. >> Okay, I was waiting for you to tell me. >> Yep. Close those eyes. Keep those eyes closed the entire time. Left. Right. Left. Right. Right. Left. You can open your eyes. I have one last exercise, okay? You good? Yes. All right. This one's called modified Romberg balance. Sounds a lot harder than it is, okay? So, you're already standing there and your hands are down to your sides for me. Just remain that position while I give you further instructions. Do you understand? >> Yes. All right. For this exercise, just like the last one, you're going to tilt your head back and close your eyes. You're going to hear me say begin. When you hear me say begin, I want you to remain in that position until you feel that 30 seconds has passed in your head. >> Uh-huh. Not out loud. >> Yeah. Once you feel you've reached 30 seconds in your head, just bring your head back down, open your eyes, and say stop. That's it. Got it. Do you understand the instructions? Any questions? Go ahead and tilt your head back for me. Close those eyes. Begin. >> Yeah. Keep Keep those eyes closed. And begin. How much time was that? 30 seconds. Okay. How did you get there? I counted like that. Just counted in your head? Okay. Mississippis? Got you. You want to put your shoes back on for me? All right. We're going to do one more other thing. We're going to walk straight over here to the front of my car, okay? You see there's that red light that's blinking for me? Face that light and put your hands on your back for me. Okay. And relax. I'm just to do everything to you. Okay. I'm sorry. And they're all tied, are they? It's really tight on your wrist. It's really tight. I'm female. Don't touch me. Yeah, it's it's because your bracelet's in the way. I'm just trying to get your bracelet out of there. I just need to breathe. It's okay. Just keep You're good. I'm just going to Listen to stop a little bit so we're able to move it out of your bracelet so you can breathe. That better? I know. All right, ma'am. I'll finish up the rest of the driving and get you to the station okay? The next part of my investigation is a breath test. You're going to have to blow into this after your breath test. Okay.
