I said just based on her blood pressure, heart rate was through the roof. >> I mean, I can down. >> I always recommend going to the hospital based on how your vehicle's priced out there. >> I am freaked out after that crash. So, >> okay. Well, if you change your mind, let me know. >> Hi. and I'll call you call you an ambulance. Okay. And I think one's even in Ralph if you change your mind. >> I think my heart rate is through the roof. >> Yeah. >> If if you decide not to go, let me know so I can get your signature. Okay. Get that blanket up there. I'll get some heat going for you and then I'm going to shut the door just so I can get heat and then I'll come back and chat with you. >> Okay, I'm back. >> So, I was driving home >> had to >> get on uncir obviously and >> someone pulled up in front of me and I had to swerve >> and I swerved aggressively into >> the like field. Yeah, >> basically. And >> yeah, it was it was pretty bad. >> Okay. >> So, >> who who did you have with you? >> No one. >> Nobody. Okay. >> Nobody. >> All right. >> So, >> well, that's good. Nothing. >> Well, you said not much. >> Uh, drank earlier, but >> Lauren, just so you know, like as I'm speaking to you, I detect a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from you. >> I did have something spilled on me. >> Oh, you did? Yeah. Okay. >> Well, what did you have spilled on you? >> My friend spilled a beer on me earlier, so >> Okay, >> that was >> But it didn't spill in your mouth. >> Did not spill in my mouth. Okay. >> Could you do me a favor real quick? I I want to look at your eyes briefly. >> I'm trying to keep this out of your eyes. Keep your head level just like that. And you see the tip of my finger. Just follow it with your eyes and your eyes only. Don't move your head or your body. >> Do you understand that? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. Almost done. >> Perfect. Thank you for doing that. Mhm. Lauren, I wanted to ask you too, what level of education do you have? >> Um, I have a bachelor's degree in biology. >> No way. Okay. Um, >> yes, sir. Sorry. I >> That's okay. >> Um, Lauren, >> frazzled tonight. >> Do you know your English alphabet? >> I do. >> Could you start with the letter G as in George and continue reciting your alphabet until you hit T as in Tom without singing it? Can you do that? Do you understand that, Tess? Yep. >> Do you have any questions? >> Okay, go ahead. >> H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V. >> Okay. And I asked you to count down to what? >> 16. >> Okay. Lauren, um, you've done a lot of you've done testing that requires you to speak a lot, right? >> And when you speak, I'm detecting a very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from your facial region. Okay? It's coming from your breath. Be honest with me. Okay? This is my job. I'm a DWI deputy. It's something I do on a daily basis. Um, honesty goes a long way. How much alcohol have you consumed today? >> No alcohol, sir. >> No alcohol. But you are around alcohol. >> I was. Yes. >> Um, [clears throat] do you use any drugs? >> No, sir. >> Okay. All right. Okay. Okay. Are you warmed up? >> Kind of. >> Yeah. Okay. Well, I got some heat going on here for you. Um, go ahead and stand up for me. Sure. And I do have the heater on back here, too. So, you go and face away from me. I'm going to place you under arrest for DWI. Okay. >> All right. Is that I'll take this wristwatch off here. Where were you coming from tonight? Just only female bronz. >> Okay. And how much alcohol did your friend have? >> None. >> None. But he spilled alcohol on you. >> Okay. Go ahead and have a seat for me. >> There you go. >> All right. >> Oh, thanks, bro. >> Okay. Yeah. I'm going to take her to the cell sub. She's hammered. Hammered. Hammered. >> All right. Doing all right. >> Yep. >> Okay. >> Yeah. I got your phone. Yeah. We'll we'll be going up back out to my car. Okay. >> Um go ahead and go in and then we'll go to the second door on the right there. Here we go. Okay. I'm going to read this to you right here. Um so it says, "Listen to me. I'm about to tell you something important. If you are under arrest for driving under the influence of an intoxicating liquor and or drug, the New Mexico Implied Consent Act requires you to submit to a breath test to determine the alcohol content of your blood. After you take our test, you have the right to choose an additional independent test. Do you agree to take our test? Yes. Okay. Do you remember hitting another vehicle? >> I do not. >> No. What do you do for a living? >> I am a embryologist. So, I make babies in the lab. >> Oh, that's kind of crazy, huh? Is that cool? >> Crazy. >> Yeah. >> People think I play God, so people either love me or hate me. >> Yeah. You're right. >> I'm very embarrassed. >> Why? I think I'm pretty upset about the whole night. >> Yeah, >> something has happened that didn't need to. >> What's that? >> Said I think something happened that didn't need to. >> Yeah. But I'm glad that I'm okay and everyone else is, I guess. Okay, Lauren, go ahead and stand up. So, what you're going to do is take a deep breath, seal your lips around the fresh mouthpiece I just put on there, and just blow. You got to blow hard all the way to the end there. There you go. See if I got that. Then I'll do one more for you. You could have a seat there. Okay, stand up. And it's going to have one more. So, deep breath and do the same thing you just did. Here you go. Same thing. You can have a seat. >> So, you don't remember crashing into another vehicle? >> I do not. >> So, that's what happeneding and then crashing. >> So, that's what happened at night. You blew through a stop sign and collided into another vehicle that was parked where unfortunately there was other people in that vehicle and there was a a female that was rushed to the hospital who is harmed very badly. So that's what's going on. Okay. Definitely remember someone like coming out into the lane. I had swerve but yes, >> you're nearly four times the illegal in that. You've consumed an enormous amount of alcohol tonight. >> Yes, sir. >> Regardless regardless, you're four times the legal limit. I haven't seen somebody below that high in a long time. >> Okay, we're going to go back out and um going to I'm going to take you to the press now just to get you cleared, make sure that you're good to go. Um if you don't have any complaints of injury, just let them know. But I'm required to to take you over there just cuz you were involved in a crash. And beyond that, you were involved in a pretty bad crash. So I just crashed. I'm sorry. >> I do want to make sure that you're okay. Still got the heater on for you, so you'll be a little more comfortable in there. stole my dad. >> Was he expecting you home? >> The same place. I don't >> Huh? Uh Lauren? >> Yes. >> What was anybody expecting you home tonight? >> Uh >> or do you live by yourself? >> I live with him. So >> you live with your dad? I do. >> Oh, okay. Okay. Yeah, we can call your dad to let him know that you're you're okay. >> [snorts] >> Hello. >> Hey, how you doing? >> Uh, I got in a car crash. >> What? >> Where are you at? >> I am currently at press bar because You're coming. >> Oh, >> yeah. So, >> yeah, I flipped the truck because I had swerved out of someone's way. Press the back of the cop car. So, >> you think so? Yes. >> Did anybody else get hurt? >> Nope. It was just you alone. >> So, uh, where are you now? You're at the hospital. >> You're not hurt. >> Well, um, is there a police officer I can talk to or anything? >> Yep. >> Let me talk [clears throat] to him. >> Hello, sir. This is Deputy Walker with the Bernalo County Sheriff's Office. >> Yes, Mr. Walker. That's my daughter as you as you've heard. >> Yeah. >> And I'm sure she'll probably be charged with DWI or something. I'm sure. >> Yes. >> Now, what will be the procedure at this point? Do I need to uh can I pick her up somewhere or will you be taking her to the to the metro place or what would be the case? >> So, I'll be booking her in MDC >> downtown. >> Uh, no. No. I'll be I'll be taking her to MDC. So, that's where she'll she'll out there. >> Yeah. >> By when do you think you'll be out there? >> Um, you're not going to be able to pick her up until probably Monday morning. >> She'll have to stay for the >> Yes. And I'm not sure how quick they'll release her. Uh, just we're we're still they're still pending charges. >> No one else was hurt. >> Uh, the vehicle that she collided into, the female that was in the vehicle was rushed to the hospital. Oh, there was another >> vehicle involved. >> Yes, there was. >> And the lady that was in that vehicle isn't in great shape. >> Oh, Lord. >> So, we're still waiting for their their condition to be assessed. >> That's exactly right. That's what we have to wait for. Wait to see. There's law enforcement at the UNH right now waiting to see what's going to happen. >> Okay. Um, >> I can't imagine what I guess I can do. I got to wait for them to >> Yeah, there not nothing you can do. Um, it's just you got to you got to wait right now. She's going to get booked. She's okay. Um, she refused medical treatment, but I took her to the press now just cuz she was involved in a crash. So, I just want a doctor's opinion before I go book her into the jail. >> So, she will be booked for DWI. >> Lauren? Yeah. Uh the uh the vehicle total >> I'm not sure. Um I I didn't take a good look at the vehicle, but it did roll. >> So she uh she's okay, but there were other people that may be hurt. >> Correct. >> Uh there's there's another person who is hurt for sure. >> Okay. >> So that's one more time. >> Yeah. Yeah. briefly and then I have to get her into the the doctor. >> Okay. And then your name again? >> Deputy Walker. And I work for the sheriff's office here. >> Oh, so she's being booked by county sheriff. >> Correct. >> Where did it happen, Mr. Walker? >> It happened on uh Dennis Chavez and Atrisco Vista right there at the corner. >> Okay. So, the truck is is being towed. No doubt. >> Yes. Yeah. The toe the truck is getting towed. >> Okay. Somebody is here. I just had a >> and and here's Lauren briefly and then I got to take her in. >> Here she is. >> On foot and there's no one else involved. I'm going to go check it out. But could you start another unit or >> you just do what they tell you to do and we'll come back as soon as we can. It's going to be a while. You're probably going to be there till Monday. >> They can't, you know, we're real concerned about somebody else being hurt. Did you just start praying about that because somebody somebody else in the other car was hurt? >> No, I know. >> Did you see them when they left when they picked that person up? >> No. >> You don't know to what degree anybody's hurt? >> No. >> Were you alone or was somebody with you? >> No, I was alone. >> Were you coming home? >> I was coming home. >> Lord Almighty. >> Well, you're going to be booked and you they will hold you till Monday. You got to get a hold of Suzanne or do you have a number for Suzanne? >> I do. >> You want to give it to me or do you know it? >> Um, I don't know it, but I can have him send it to you. [snorts] >> Okay. How about Frances? You want me to call her? >> Yeah, I probably will. >> Oh, Jesus. >> I know. We got to wait for her to be booked into the county jail and they won't release her till probably Monday or so. >> Okay. Well, uh, as soon as you as soon as you get to the to the facility over there, you call me. >> Okay, I will. >> And make sure you get checked out and just keep in prayer about this other person, whoever it is. >> Yeah, I know. >> How did that happen? You know, >> I had to swerve and then I hit a car. >> That's how >> Why did you swerve? >> Because someone was in the road. >> Someone was in the road? >> Yes. >> A person? >> Yes. >> Oh, so there was already an accident ahead of you. No, but someone was in the road and I swerved and I hit someone and then I flipped the truck. >> Flipped the truck. >> Your truck? >> Yeah. >> Yes. >> Well, we got to talk about that later. Right now, let's take care of you. Don't accuse medical. Have something to look at. >> All right. >> They're not going to see your job. >> As soon as you get to the NBC truck is the truck is ruined, honestly. >> Oh, I'm sure it is. >> All right, sir. I'm going to I'm going to take her in. I got uh I'm on a timeline here, so I got to get her in and get her booked. >> Thank you, Mr. Walker. And if you can keep us in touch or somebody, we certainly would appreciate it. >> Okay. Yeah, she'll give you a call when she gets to MDC. >> All righty. >> All right, sir. Have a good night. >> Thank you. >> Okay, let's get you inside. >> All right. Thank you. >> Of course. Of course. >> Hi. >> Hi. >> Hello. Thanks. >> Thank you. >> I'm just stupid tonight. >> Well, the level of alcohol that your your level of impairment is pretty severe. >> Sorry. >> You've consumed a lot to get you out of 29. Why were you drinking so much tonight? >> It's a long story. Well, we'll be sitting here for a long time. So, if you >> want to tell it, I'm all ears. >> Well, me and my best friend are doing some things that are more than friendly. >> She doesn't want to say that they're more than friendly. >> Now, she's going on a date some dude. >> So, That upset you a little bit. >> Yeah, >> sure did. >> She uh loves me but doesn't quite love me the way I want to. So I think uh and I have to talk may ask what are you typing? >> Um so this is the criminal complaint. This talks about why I responded to the scene and what I observed, how our conversation went, what I detected, and how our little our test went in the back of the vehicle, and the breath results, which were very happy. So, right now you're being charged with aggravated DWI. >> And I'm still checking in on the other I'm being updated here on the other the other person involved. Okay. >> How are they? >> It says female still sedated and in critical condition. >> [snorts] >> So not great >> great. >> Just hope the other person is okay. >> You don't deserve death. No. >> No. >> It's a bad choice. It was a mistake. Well, >> you don't deserve death here. >> We're going to get you taken care of. Go book you in jail. like one time or eight times. >> Did you like just lose control on the road? >> Don't know. >> Don't know. >> Okay. Um, did you get knocked out? >> Uh, yeah, actually. >> Yeah. >> Like two seconds. >> Not too much. >> And how are you doing right now? >> Good. >> Do you have any head, neck, or back pain? Any numbness, tingling down your arms or legs? >> You didn't pure poop yourself. Okay. And walked in. Okay. Walk in. Okay. Everything is good. She's not having trouble walking. >> She's four times over the legal limit. So, I mean, besides >> the normal trouble walking. >> Yeah. A little bit. >> Nothing that I was. >> Okay. Do you mind standing up and doing it just a quick advance? >> I just put that she respectfully declined any further workup if there's any complaints or anything. The only concern is her heart is a little bit fast, but she's also been looking at the zombies. >> Okay. Thank you, Samantha. I appreciate you. >> Sorry I took my phone to back. >> Yeah, >> you're awesome like normal. Appreciate it. >> Thanks. >> So, I'm I'm booking you on aggravated DWR. >> Another deputy, he's with our traffic investigation unit. He's going to be charging you with great bodily harm by motor vehicle. That's a felony. Okay. Um, so that's that he's going to be charging you with that tonight. And what they're doing right now, um, is reconstructing the scene. So, they're going to find out exactly what happened. And you have a cool box in your truck that refreshes every tenth of a second. So, it lets us know how fast you were going, which direction the wheel was turned, when the brakes were pressed, like all of that. Um, so that'll give us more detail into what actually happened tonight. And that's what he's doing. He's reconstructing it. Okay. Um, um, right now it's I just got an update on the on the other driver. She's in critical condition. She has um she's being rushed into the operating room right now for a head surgery. Okay. They think they said she's stable. So that's that's the most recent update that I have for you. Okay. >> The 29-year-old was booked that night on charges of grievous bodily harm and aggravated DWI. But those charges were [music] upgraded to homicide by vehicle just a few days later when the female passenger that Lauren hit, 31-year-old Daisy Dwenos, tragically died from her injuries. Lauren was held in jail without bond after Daisy's death as prosecutors argued that she posed a danger to the community. But on October 14th, the New Mexico Court of Appeals reversed that order, ruling in favor of her defense that Lauren be released pending trial. Her next hearing is scheduled for November 13th, 2025, where the court is expected to set a formal trial date. [music] If convicted, Lauren Lucero faces up to 12 years in state prison.
