But Steven's muffled voice caused a critical misunderstanding. Dispatch failed to relay the homicide to patrol and instead sent officers to conduct a wellness check on Steven. As the officers received the go-ahad from their sergeant to force entry, they had no idea that a haunting discovery was waiting just behind the door. >> It's okay. I have no >> What? As the sergeant called for detectives, officers learned that Steven had been living in the mobile home for the past 5 years, caring for his 79-year-old mother, Susan Cotney Larkin. But as officers cleared the rest of the trailer, it became obvious that very little care was being given. The home was in absolute filth, filled with trash, crawling with mice and bed bugs, and with human waste visible in multiple areas. [Music] Nearly every officer who entered the home that night can be heard wretching from the stench. The living conditions not only cast doubt on Steven's role as caregiver, but also on his claim that the murder was born out of a momentary loss of control. In reality, it was clear that Steven had never been in control at all. >> Oh, dude, there's [ __ ] in a bucket back there. There's [ __ ] in this toilet right here. >> Under under the blanket right there. Hey, I uh I pulled it and she's has bugs and [ __ ] on her face and she's all she was bleeding. I cleared that [ __ ] by myself. >> Yeah, >> she's like she has like bugs on her. She was It's like she was like bleeding from the face. >> So, did they already check her out? >> No. >> The lady >> they're going to get her into the [ __ ] ambulance first. Him and the ambulance first. Then they're going to go in and check him. I don't want any of this in the news. It don't matter. I just don't want to embarrass my >> I can't control what the news does. >> Once it Once it's out there, it's public record. My mom used to beat me when I was a little girl. >> One of her friends called me and told him, "Get your ass out here. She needs help." >> And I changed my hair. I've been taking care of the last five years. About the last 6 months, >> and she's been trying to go back to how she used to when I was a kid. She tried real hard to kick me in the nuts the other night and I was just trying to be fine >> and feed her and she started being really mean and I lost her what all was happening or what all was I just know I lost it when I came to she was gone and I know I was the only one here. But what I wouldn't do that wouldn't do it last 6 months. Things have gotten really heavy. >> I just didn't I love my She's >> 60 only. You guys, please take care of Sassy. Please. She's a good loving girl, >> the dog. >> Please take care. Don't send her to the family. That's all. Ruin everything. everybody. I I'll live long enough for anybody to punish me long enough that I deserve for that. I want you to tell I didn't mean to do this. I lost it. I th I asked I remember I remember saying please don't do that. I lost it. I didn't want to let my mom beat me up. I forgave her and I came home to help her. my kids said unless once he got stupid and ugly. I quit cleaning. I quit doing anything because she was mean and nasty about everything. And I tried whatever you do. Don't ever beat your chair. I put you in my report saying with me. That's fine. You understand me? >> Yes, sir. >> I want everybody to understand that. >> I got you. >> They're doing more than they understand. >> The kids are doing more than they understand. >> Mhm. >> I didn't mean to do this. I love my mom. >> But when she tried to hurt me again, I lost her. I just couldn't control it. Are you in the right frame of mind right now? So, if I was to ask you some questions, could you answer them for me? >> Try. >> You can try. All right. So, I got to read this to you because you're technically in our custody right now. >> My rights. >> Yep. Do you understand each of these rights I've explained to you? >> Yes, sir. >> Having these rights in mind right now. Do you wish to talk to me? >> You want me to? I was. >> All right, bro. So, so what happened tonight? How come I'm out here? >> I called the police when I came to call for help. I don't know what to do. I don't want I don't want anybody to hate me for something. I don't mean to do that. >> Didn't mean to do what, bro? My my my mom used to beat me when I was a kid. Real bad. I mean bad. And I forgave her for that. But when she tried to physically harm me, I looked out and I I don't know what I I don't know what all happened. I can't tell cuz I don't know. >> Okay. Will you get me a chair also, please? I've been taking care of her for the last 5 years and then the last 6 months she started saying mean [ __ ] and and try trying to lost it somewhere but I slept. I said I don't know what I'll do. >> Okay. I remember I remember my mom sitting on the floor and we couldn't wake her up and I realized what happened. I tried to >> All right, man. >> You don't know how to >> I don't, man. And I'm sorry. I'm sorry that we're here right now. >> Me, too. So what? Tell me about Saturday night. Do you remember Saturday night? >> Okay. >> What? I think it happened. >> Saturday night? >> I think so. >> All right. Do you remember Friday night? >> Okay. All right. So, kind of go over tell me what started the fight with you and your mom. Tell me what happened again. I kept trying to say I'm sorry and help her what I usually do to feed her or to dress her or whatever. >> Yes, sir. >> And uh I remember she was saying things and I remember as you understand that I already forgave you for all that mess you did to me. Why are you trying to be mean to me? I remember the answer and I remember her kicking ticking or trying to kick me in the nose when I was trying to help her. >> Okay. >> And I don't remember much after that. >> Okay. Do you remember are there any memories of you putting your hands on her or anything like that? >> No. >> Okay. Except afterwards I tried to make sure she was okay. >> What was your mom? Was your mom sick? >> I think so. I think I think she had the Alzheimer. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> That's why I kept trying to be nice and ch nice and ch things. >> I love my mom. I forgave my mom. refused to beat me from the back of my legs all the way up the back of my neck and bloody welts. And then they said, "Please come and take care of me. You come and take care of her." >> How long have you been taking care of your mom? >> Five years. >> For 5 years. Has anything like this ever happened before? >> Do you know what might have set your mom off to make her kick you? >> I don't That's why I don't understand. I wasn't doing anything mean. I was trying to help her and feed her. >> Okay. >> And be nice to her. She she she tried to kick me in the nuts again. I don't remember a whole lot about that. I remember that part. I thought that was me, but I don't remember. It hurts my wall. >> Tell me what little pieces you do remember about it. I remember I remember she she would I remember she was unconscious and I remember taking her off of the chair. >> Okay. >> And trying to I remember trying to help her with CPR a little bit. I remember that. >> Okay. And then when I realized she was dead is when I tried to kill myself. >> Okay. >> So, I'm going to ask you some hard questions. All right, Stephen. Is that okay? >> Okay. So, do you drink? >> Not regularly. >> Okay. Were you drinking when this happened? >> Okay. If you were, it's all right. I'm just trying to figure out >> No, no, no, no. I'm not insinuating anything. I'm just I'm just asking questions, ma'am. I know I wasn't drinking though. >> Okay. >> I smoked a lot of pot once in a while. I do some cocaine. >> Were you smoking weed that night? >> Always. >> Always. >> Always. >> Okay. All right. What about coca? Do you do any of that? >> Not that night. >> Afterwards. Yeah. >> Afterwards. Okay. >> I was trying. >> I'm sorry you feel that we met. I really am. >> But that was the last of my family. I don't have no more. I can only empathize with you. I'm sorry. I I I don't understand what you're going through right now. >> I don't understand why I'm going through this. I don't >> I don't understand why it happened. >> So, that's kind of what our job is is to figure out what happened. Okay. Um >> it was nice. I didn't do it >> when when this happened after you realized that your mom was no longer here, right? When you realized that she was dead, >> did you Is that when you took the pills and drank all the vodka? >> Okay. Did you try to call 911 for her or did you just call for yourself? >> Both. >> For both. >> Okay. So, there was no mention about your mom in the 911 call. >> She was already gone. >> Okay. I didn't want I didn't want to let everybody wonder what happened if I died. >> Okay. >> I don't want anybody else to be blamed for this or anything. I'm not trying to blame anybody. It happened and I didn't do it for >> Okay. All right. Stephen, do you suffer from any mental illness? >> Can you tell me what? >> PTSD. >> Okay. from the incidents with your mom when you were a kid. >> Yes. >> Anything else? >> I don't know. >> Okay. >> You haven't had proac. >> I'm I'm not a doctor. I I'm just a doctor. >> It's a person at some point. >> Okay. >> I don't know what the name is. >> Hey, it's all right. I don't need the specifics for it. I'm just trying to learn a little bit more about you right now. Okay. So, and so you said you've been taking care of your mom for about the last 5 years. >> All right. Um, have you looked for any sort of additional help through the state or anything like that? >> Okay. All right. Have you ever gotten frustrated with your mom before? Been upset with her? >> Of course. >> Of course. Well, I mean, yeah, I get it. My mom's a pain in the ass sometimes, too. Um, >> my teacher was when she tried to physically hurt me again and I lost it. >> Okay. >> Do you normally black out like that? >> No. >> Do you know what might have caused that? >> No. >> Okay. >> Just But maybe maybe my mind went back to when she used to meet me. I don't know. >> Okay. Okay. Do you All right. So, here's one of those hard questions again. Okay, man. Do you suffer with anger issues or anything like that? >> I don't think so. >> Okay. All right. Stephen, can you tell me what today is? >> The guy in the ambulance told me it was Monday. >> Okay. Do you know what the actual date is? second to something that >> Okay. What month are we in right now? >> January. >> Okay. What year is it? >> 2025. >> Okay. Who's the president right now? >> Donald Trump >> right now. >> Okay. How many quarters are in a $150? >> See? >> Okay. Do you know roughly what time it is right now? >> Well, yeah. The clock's up there to 11. >> [ __ ] Okay, fair enough. >> So, do you have any questions for me right now, Stephen? >> Charge, but where am I going to be charged with? >> Well, right now, I don't know. And I'm not going to lie to you, and I'm not going to beat around the bush with anything. >> Probably were. >> We're both grown ass men, so some version of that. Yes, probably. Okay. I appreciate your honesty. I appreciate you talking to me. >> Once detectives had documented Steven's account, they returned to the crime scene with a medical investigator where they would examine the body and determine whether Steven's story would hold up. >> So, what is your thinking on this? What likeation? >> I don't know, man. Because he never really gave us how I did it. >> He said he like blacked out and then she was dead. You know what? I don't see the rest. >> She definitely was sitting on that chair. >> Yeah. >> Well, he said she was deceived and that he pulled her out of the chair and was trying to give her CPR and then realized what he'd done and took a bunch of pills to try and >> talk to God. legit. >> I know. >> She won't be on the docket till tomorrow. That's I mean till >> the 8th >> Wednesday. >> And the blood coming from her mouth is that just because her head is down and it feels >> Yeah, she's she's far along the purge. She's so far along decomposed from the neck up because >> Saturday is Saturday consistent. >> Um >> we're what Tuesday morning? >> We're about 48 hours. >> Yeah, for sure. Yeah. >> 48 to 50 hours or so probably. I mean, I would I would think there'd be more decomp like on her legs, on her feet uh in 48 hours because it's pretty warm in here. To me, it's pretty warm in here right now. >> Um >> Well, so we've had the door open all night and that heater's been running. >> So, that would have been the the process would have been even more even quicker. >> So, >> could be. It could be. I mean, >> so Saturday in the night, Saturday in the morning. >> He didn't say >> Saturday night. Saturday night. >> I don't recall. He said evening. >> Yeah, Saturday evening. Saturday night. >> Like I say, man, you know what? I would I would expect to see 48 hours with this much heat. This thing's probably been blasting in a trailer. >> So, I would say even more more of a process would have gone through in 48 hours. >> Yeah. Especially she's she's not healthy. She's a big woman. There's a number of other things that have been >> She doesn't probably get up very often. >> Exactly. At all. >> Exactly. She's probably I mean, look, it's full of [ __ ] >> Yeah. >> There's there's human feces all over it. So there's >> She's non ambulatory for the most part, which is it's going to make the process a lot quicker. >> Yeah. So I don't know. I'm just searching this area right here. Lieutenant >> the bed. >> How do you search this? You can >> I know >> it's 99% garbage. >> I know. >> Can't sift through all this. And then with the mice and all the pugs I've seen >> I know. >> All right. So, based on >> what I saw from the victim, >> there's no clear >> Yeah. There's no clear trauma. >> There's no punctures. There's no holes. There's no n >> bruising >> just pretty standard rig and mortise and >> but her position the way her neck was. >> If he was beating on her face, we wouldn't see anything really. >> No. Well, she was moved from the chair as well. He even said that she was already dead and then he moved her from the chair. >> Yeah. >> The only part that doesn't really line up is he said he did CPR on her. But if he did CPR, he would have had to lay her down because I don't think he would have been able to pick her up and lay her back there like that. >> No, he probably moved pulled her out of the chair and tried to do CPR on her right there. >> Unless you've like had any sort of formal training, you're not going to think to put somebody on a hard flat surface. >> No, but you're going to know you can't chest compression sitting up though. You would think. I mean, like, I've heard of stories of people trying to do it on beds and things like that, but >> I don't see [ __ ] in here. >> You're not going to see anything. I mean, >> I mean, look at all these medication bottles. I mean, >> I know. >> All right. >> I'm sure she was on a >> of meds. And >> here's more right here. >> Are those are he? I already took pictures of that. >> I mean, besides what happened, I mean, they're just disgusting people to begin with. >> Just the way they live. >> I'm done here. >> This is a mess. identify as >> Okay, we're going to work on that right now. Okay. >> Just 10 days after his arrest, Steven met with his defense council and signed a guilty plea, reducing his charge from homicide to voluntary manslaughter. And on August 8th, 2025, a New Mexico district judge sentenced him to 6 years in prison, followed by 2 years of parole. Some may see the sentence as far too lenient for taking the life of the woman who brought him into the world when she was just 19 years old. But when Steven Drowski walks free at the age of 66, he will forever be shackled with the guilt of ending his mother's life. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
