literally just trying to help destion to who say [Music] again Watch is 56 the Santa Fe Police Department got a call about a luggage theft at the airport when officers start started investigating they realized it was City director of the water utilities department John dup and he makes over $130,000 a year officers began to unravel the case when interviewing security and the victims so let's start off how were you guys flying out or flying in so what brings you here to the airport today yeah so we had flown out to witch talk Kansas on Sunday and so we were there this week um we flew from Witchita to Denver and then in Denver they asked for volunteers for you know like they booked the flight they're like anyone want some travel money if you volunteer to stay for the next one which was like 4 hours later okay um to here so stayed but it was last second so our box was shipped ahead of us like on the plan we were going to be on okay yeah so your your bags went on the flight you were originally supposed to stay on right right but it was just one yeah we had everything else with us like we had carry-ons that are now in our car but it's just the one box that we checked only checked one box y yeah and so we were just coming home and going to drive back home what was inside how big of the box it's like uh probably about yay I'd say 18 in tall 18 in wide probably 30 long um it was a my old microwave box there wasn't a microwave inside of it buted up like chip from Christmas what was inside of it so I've got a whole list okay yeah you got the list good a bunch of stuff it was basically all like Christmas gifts family stuff um so Lord of the Rings Lego set a th000 piece I don't know how much detail you want uh what whatever you want to provide yeah it's like so two large Lego sets um a custom Leather Pouch let's start with the little Rings Lego set what do you think that is uh value Valu at that one's like 120 130 or something yeah good next um another Lego set is valued at I think it said 60 6 65 on the Lego website um what kind of Lego set was that it was a floral bouquet okay this is going to be so Random it is random it's it's Christmas yeah um a custom Leather Pouch like the estimate about 100 bucks I don't I don't know it's from Etsy so we can't really like look up where my family member got it from but it has like verberg yeah it has my name on it okay um a like custom printed like large three canvas photography prints okay I would estimate several hundred at least 300 minimum with editing printing mounting yeah yeah I don't know 3 to 500 um I had a pair of jeans and leggings 50 bucks I think you had a pair of pants two fls pair of pants I don't remember there's just t-shirts nothing crazy but an antique like large pulley that we got at an antique shop in Kansas say that name you like a like a barn pulley like a like a pulley yeah like one hook and wheels and block and tackle yeah random [ __ ] um an ember what would you estimate the the barn pulley at 50 bucks well 50 bucks in Kansas like 100 to 200 here because they don't yeah um a heated mug system that runs about 110 on Amazon for that brand um like there was an ornament organizer some like essential oil bath salts fing some hot wheel cars yes most of the large value stuff I've already told you that was like the hundreds of dollars worth three four seven that's the main thing we want is freaking artwork and that'd be kind of cool if Jack asked mege who's like oh yeah that's my box so it's based on what you guys told me it's over $1,000 approximately that's quite a bit and you guys live in Los Alamos yeah okay and who did you talk to first when you no the bag was or the bag looking for the bag yeah it was a gentleman he's not here anymore was one of the United you guys came in on United yeah and so we just came straight here you any flight numbers do you want no I get that from security what not yeah cuz I got in a text that said your bag had already arrived on an earlier flight just go to the baggage claim talk to an agent it's the text I got and then they're like we don't have it and then you know so on they looked at security and let me give a security and see what I can see on the video they'll provide me and then I'll be right out okay thank you so this is him right there he already has his bags he's got a couple bags he's got two check bags like I said one of them was some kind of firearm and uh and another bigger roller so what happens is he's sitting there the American Airlines CU they just can't send his gun through there yeah so he bring he walks it in here hands him that case and uh and his other roller bag and those are the only two bags he checked yes so at that point he's he has all his stuff right he has all stuff he's on the phone maybe he's just hanging out while he's on the phone I don't I mean who knows um where does it show American aines give him his bag oh did you want to see that yeah okay okay so he comes in the back back door the two items okay like a rifle case and a black roller and you know it's a rifle case cuz of the color of the tag that's on it hands it to them and that's at 10446 yep so every everybody leaves pretty much mhm they're still they remain after he leaves so what happens is the United ground guy will come in here and you there's no audio on this but you could tell he asked some you know if this is anybody's stuff they say no he claims the box and so the United guy takes this bag and brings it inside he ends up getting up picking up the box you kind of see he's kind of scoping around right now I think he's already got the idea in his head so his truck is is actually parked close by so the fact that he's kind of lingering so he's going to take those two to his truck and come back for those why he switched those out I don't know his name's John dupr and there's the Box open oh look ni [Music] s please yes how's it going John yes can we talk to you for a second yes was like cool I will bring her back to the airport I'll have to be there at 5:00 in the morning I would have brought it back to like in the middle of the night but um like it's uh a long day I have to wake up really early there was just a lot going and so it just made sense to bring it in the morning okay John let me ask you this when you when you checking a bag to baggage claim right they give you a tag right say here's your tag we're checking your bag yes sir okay do you know what that system's for to be able to verify yeah be able to verify that your bag right and what happens if your bag doesn't show up at the place that you're looking for you get it shipped to like they normally take care take care of it for you yeah they the the the airlines find your bag right yes sir if you leave your bag there and you get held up at a different place they hold on to your bag right yes sir not around ROM person doesn't just grab the box and take it to somebody you see what I'm getting that absolutely it wasn't no nowhere anywhere for you to grab that box and take it and load in the back of the truck and then you went so far as to I don't know how how you said it got open but somebody's belongings are all spread out in the back of that truck see what I'm saying yes sir so let me ask you this uh if it's something if end up getting damage because of well let me ask you this you got your bagage you got your bags okay I watched you in your TSA you check a rifle case and a black roller right yes sir so only two bags of yours Airlines attendant gives you that those baggage your your stuff at 104 you waited until the very end until everybody was almost out of baggage claim 24 minutes approximately 24 minutes till nobody else was there Airlines guy comes in and says these these bags belong anybody you pointed out that box Airlines guy grabs the bag I had just text um and was waiting I was like I think that's the right one and then he ended up leaving I was like all right well I'll get this um and if it's not the right one I'll bring it back but I was very certain that it was the right one so it has somebody's name on it right yes yeah did you know that person uh no sir okay then why did you take the box it met the description from yesterday so I thought that that was it I was L literally just trying to help description to who say again you said it match a description from yesterday for what um my buddy Jeff uh works at the Wastewater Plant um I thought I'd be able to give it to him uh ultimately I ended up spending the afternoon at the Wastewater Plant you can verify you talk to H and like I thought he was going to come get it he didn't so I opened it tonight um and I was like dude this is not yours so I'll just bring it back in the morning but like I didn't want to like uh keep waiting like I was questioning it a little myself like I literally took a photo of it sent it he's like yeah that should be it and I was like all right but it didn't have Jeff's name on it it had a female's name on it it had two people's name on I thought it was Jeff and someone no no Jeff man okay um I apologize I I do do you see where we're at now yes sir I watch a video of you sitting in a room after you've already getting your bags take a picture of a box point at the box as you tell an Airlines attendant saying that I'll take the box right which is clearly marked not yours yes sir okay there's a system clearly in place for people with lost baggages right yes sir I mean but it is a real pain in the but I've had to do it myself and like you have to be there whenever the uh person from American is there that has the key to a specific room and like I didn't want someone else to have to go through that so I was literally just trying to help I got the wrong one it was questionable it was hard to get in touch with Jeff ultimately whenever he texted back he said that's should be it but it's not and so did you take it before Jeff told you it was his or after the fact you took it because it matched the description and then after the fact he's like that's not mine yes sir and I was like dude I opened it and like it it's not your stuff it's like something totally different and all the contents in the back of the truck um it may have gotten uh it was like a frantic mess whenever it was starting to snow and then it stopped and I was like but like it it's in good condition like it's not wet let let me ask you that question again John all the contents that were inside the Box are they still in the back of the truck oh yeah absolutely absolutely none of those belongings are inside the house at all no sir absolutely not okay you said you sent a text message to who to see if it was their box Jeff to Jeff okay so the text message will be in your phone right should be should be okay so when she finds your phone is it okay if we check and sure yeah okay just we just want to make sure and see if Jeff's you sent a text message to Jeff at the same time that make sense yeah don't know where your phone is and I think it was only the photo like I ended up just talking to him later cuz he wasn't responding what's your code boss uh I I should I like go to uh cuz I looked at that uh note on it and it says Los Alamos and I was like maybe I should drive to Los Alamos but I was like that's silly because it's already troubling to uh get rest and get to the airport in the morning so you're supposed to fly out tomorrow morning um it's a 5:45 flight I have to be there at 5: when they open and so like leave here by 4 not not not show up 9 minutes prior and miss your fight again exactly that was uh rough what do you do for the city John the utility director for uh Water waste water and SE there's no phone in that truck sir um then it would probably be on my desk at work okay so what predicament you put us in John yes sir I am apologize able to collaborate your story here see right now I have to go on the basis of facts that I know right I know that a box was taken from an airport okay clearly Mark not yours you at no liberty or should have known better to not take a box or a package or somebody else's belongings from an airport right and the matter of the circumstances see where I'm at yes sir and then we get here and the contents Inside the Box are in disarray throughout the the bed of the truck and we're not able to confirm the your reasonings and statements that you why you took the Box yes sir okay so at this time you're being placed under arrest for larsy of the package okay are these your shoes box can you slip these on yes sir we'll get you some clothes and let you change up the station okay okay can I at least like put underwear on and stuff she's going to at least and then whatever stuffff it's been a long day like literally I'm like trying to bend over backwards to do more at home like it's just like a struggle with our relationship and her daughter she's five and it's like you know I've been stepping up doing like cooking dishes stuff like that and it's like finally start to come around but it's a lot of extra effort and honestly if I had the extra effort I would have put put back together tonight um is it hopeful in any way for me to try to go get his phone I don't know not really um I mean if what you are saying is true just because you're being arrested for this right now obviously you're not being convicted yes sir so if what you're saying is true that' be your defense does that make sense yes sir so but like officer the floor was saying we have to go off of the information that we have at the time at this time and unfortunately at this time the facts of the situation is there's no probable cause to say you committed a crime of arseny so we have no no choice and it unfortunately it is a felony amount so we have we have no choice but to place youest okay is there just out of curiosity uh any chance like uh I don't know what it's called but like like um bail yes sir sir so sanf county is a bailess county so you have to speak with the judge in the morning chances are you don't have a lengthy criminal history the judge will let you out when they speak with you tomorrow Sunday yeah so that being said um where are all the items from that box right next to the box and I can I can put it back like I remember how it was organized and I can put it back like it was that's what we're going to do okay we're that okay with you yes sir all right this pants too small for you no it's fine okay thanks get a my shirt and this is your phone right this one yes sir I would recommend taking it that way when you do get released on Sunday you can call her to come pick you up okay yes sir uh it's pretty thick what's in the back of it um my card to get in to get he'll get the option of a phone call I'm assuming he's going to use to call you um and then after that you can call the jail and see what's going on uh generally this isn't like 100% fact but generally judges have been doing arrangments on Sundays uh worst case scenario it being like the holiday time and stuff like that worst case scenario Monday um but like I said generally Sundays they've been doing arraignments like maybe around between 11 to 1:00 but however it also depends on like how many people satday not not every it's kind of uh up to the judges so I can't I can't give you like I said some to review suon to review his file before before Sunday so before Sunday um but it also depends on how many people were booked into the jail over the weekend how long it'll take the jail to process to release him so just because he's arraigned at like 11: doesn't mean he's getting out at 11 so how that might take long but he'll have his phone he'll be able to call you okay just got out and you'll you know it's maybe 20 minute drive 25 minute drive at the wor take 5.99 all the way out until 14 okay any other questions um do you want me to call your dad yes please okay should I call him in the morning he was flying dad um yeah and uh Joe Walsh next one yeah so I'll tell you what we're at the station I'm doing your paperwork I'll let you make a couple phone calls facts of situations show that more likely than not you you stole that that box at the time right now time right based off what we have okay what your time this is true and it's able to cooperate then your defense trainer will be able to prove that and they'll work it out through the legal system that's why we have these checks and balances of the legal system right yes sir but again unfortunately it's a fony amount based on the facts our hands are tied there's probable cause to affect an arrest we have no choice but to affect an arrest that makes sense okay not saying you're a bad person or
