to investigate a report of a woman found passed out behind the wheel of her vehicle this type of situation typically raises significant concerns regarding the safety of the individual as well as the potential risks posed to Public Safety those prescription glasses yes okay uh take any medications yes no did you take all those today okay what time did you take it about an hour ago hour ago M well seeing that you're in a parking lot you want me turn it over to your husband please yeah it's one thing I can do for you okay all right so you're not um upon arriving at the scene the officers approached the vehicle where the suspected individual was located their first priority was to assess the woman's condition and determine if she required any immediate medical attention officers are trained to handle such scenarios with caution as a driver passed out behind the wheel could be experiencing medical distress intoxication or other impairments once it was clear that the woman was this step is a standard procedure that helps officers identify the individual and determine her driving history during this initial conversation the officers noted that the woman appeared disoriented which prompted further scrutiny after after collecting the necessary documentation and speaking briefly with the woman the officers requested that she step out of the vehicle and join them on the road for further questioning this request serves several purposes it allows the officers to assess her physical state more closely prevents her from potentially fleeing in the vehicle and ensures the officer's safety during the interaction what's going on I don't know you don't know can you turn the car off for me yeah okay got your driver's license on you yeah it's right here it's right in your today no no you sure be honest with me no I'm being honest I haven't okay I haven't well you're passed out in the front seat you're causing a lot of disturbance you're not even a parking [Music] spot toss us up here for me out for me you don't have any weapons on you do you no M we're going to go over here for a second okay mhm as the woman stepped onto the road the officers continued gathering information during this interaction they noticed a strong odor of alcohol emanating from her breath this observation raised immediate suspicions that she might be under the influence of alcohol officers are trained to recognize such indicators which can include slurred speech difficulty maintaining balance bloodshot eyes and the smell of alcohol these signs often warrant further investigation to confirm whether a driver is impaired you got F all right well Natalie from your mannerisms and what's been going on here I suspect that you're probably under the influence of something okay so we're going to run you through a couple of tests okay this officer is going to run you one through one and then I'm going to run you through a couple okay so he's going to have some questions for you so answer them honestly and then we're going to go from there okay are those prescription glasses okay um Tak any medications yes no did you take all those today okay what time did you take it hour hour ago hour ago mhm you just been in the car do you take it while you're in the car no no I said home where' you come my house okay where you live I live with my parents ining here you work here no what brought you here I was just part here I was making a phone call okay the officers informed the woman of their intention to conduct standardized field sobriety tests sfsts a common method used to evaluate a person's level of impairment the woman agreed to undergo these tests which allowed the officers to proceed with their evaluation the first test conducted by the officers was the hgn test during this test the officers instructed the woman to follow the tip of a pen or another small object with her eyes without moving her head horizontal gaze nagus refers to the involuntary jerking of the eyes that becomes more pronounced when a person is under the influence of alcohol the officers carefully observed the woman's eye movements and noted significant signs of impairment during this test I seem to get a lot of sleep last night I've had a lot going on in my marriage do you have any head injuries or anything like that no um have you ever had any head injuries nothing like that I surgeries okay I'm going to ask you to take off your glasses okay I'm I have really bad Vision are you able to see my finger yes okay awesome so here's what i'mna do I'm GNA call the tip of this pen the stimulus I just want you to focus on the tip this for all that perfect all right so focus on that I want you to only follow it with your eye following the hgn test the officers moved on to the walk and turn test this test involves walking in a straight line turning and walking back while following specific instructions provided by the officers the test requires the individual to demonstrate balance coordination and the ability to perform divided attention tasks before starting the officers explained the instructions clearly to ensure the woman understood what was expected despite these clear instructions the woman struggled to maintain her balance and failed to perform the test correctly further indicating imper I fix this St we're actually going to go over here and use this line so okay I'm going have to do a test called the walk and turn okay so I'm going to I'm going to explain this test to you before you do it okay so you want to stand over here and then watch you can use this line right here okay what you're going to do is you're going to place your left foot on the line all right and then you're going to put your right heel against your left toe just like this okay you're going to put both your arms uh By Your Side you're going to maintain this position and do not do anything until I do tell you to do you understand that yeah okay stand over here and I'm going to explain to you when I tell you to you're going to walk and you're going to step and you're going to count out loud you're going to go 1, one 1,2 13 1004 then you're going to take a you're going to get all the way to nine you take a series of small steps you're going to turn around and then you're going to walk back 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 okay you understand can I just say one two yeah you can just say one two okay so you can use so you're start with your left my left foot yep you put your your side hands at your side and put your right foot in front of your left foot on your [Music] toes you're you're in a straight line take nine steps and you turn around and come back to me count out loud three three oh okay I'm freezing too I'm sorry 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 n and then turn around Ser the small steps turn around and come back towards me and then left foot again okay I already instructed you to one two three 4 5 6 8 okay the final test conducted was the oneel leg stand test for this test the officers instructed the the woman to stand on one leg while counting aloud for a specific duration this test is designed to evaluate a person's balance and focus as with the previous tests the woman failed to perform this task successfully she was unable to maintain her balance and exhibited clear signs of impairment throughout the test all right there's going to be one more test you can stand right here for me okay all right you're going to watch me I'm going to explain it to you okay you're going to stand with your feet together and you're going to keep your arms down by your side all right you're going to maintain that position until I uh until you're told to do so otherwise do you understand yes okay when I tell you to start you're going to rise either leg approximately 6 in off the the ground uh keeping your raised foot parallel to the ground keep both legs straight and arms at your side keep your uh eyes on the elevated foot so you're going to put your foot out just like this and you're Point your toe parallel to the ground all right while holding that position you're going to count out loud once 1001 1002 and told to stop do you understand so like this I do like this be off about approximately 6 in off the ground and then go one two while you're looking at your okay and then you're count tell you to stop Y and you're count 1,1 1,002 this is where you have to say the 1,000 and how how what do I count up to until I tell you to stop okay all right all right keep your arms down by your side okay and go ahead and you startop ready1 you need to count out loud oh I'm sorry 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 after completing all three field sobriety tests the officers concluded that the woman was under the influence of alcohol the results of the tests combined with the strong smell of alcohol and her overall Behavior confirmed their suspicions the officers informed the woman that she was being placed under arrest for driving Under the Influence DUI they followed standard arrest procedures ensuring that the woman was informed of her rights and that the situation was handled professionally all right Natalie give me a favor turn around for me put your hands together like you're praying and unlock your fingers interlock your fingers interlock your fingers okay there's just some indicators that I believe that you're under the influence of some sort of narcotic or alcohol so you're going be placing arrest for the suspicion of ow okay are you diabetic at all do you have any medical problems no can I B out something okay can I make a phone call a TV or anything huh um yeah you count 15 after placing her in handcuffs they escorted her to their patrol vehicle where she was seated for transportation to the police station before leaving the scene the officer spoke with her husband explaining him the process that will follow and why they believed the woman was unfit to drive um just get her search we'll put her on the back and I'm sure he'll have okay [Music] guys oh you're going to go right here my husband oh you'll be able to make a a phone call from the jail okay turn Face this way face this way answer it uh the way that you want answer it wants Edwards to read their P rights and stuff okay so we let him step in and do that just forain last time sorry what just H to my husband not right this second no okay so uh the d17 so um right now she's uh under arrest okay um for op time DUI DUI so we're going to be taking her in um to process that okay um be respectful to her she's safe other issues okay I just wanted to make sure she's otherwise healthy and she's not going to have a heart issue you good for a second we're going to go I'll come talk to you guys in a second so so we y i just she just told me stories abouton police mistreating her in the past so oh okay that's why I was just a little well we have our supervisor here at the moment so um got niol we're going to treat you well once the investigation at the station was complete the woman was presented in court to face charges related to her actions she was charged with operating while intoxicated enhanced impaired
