We saw the We saw the baby. >> We scared for our life just like y'all, bro. Like come on, y'all got guns pointed on a baby, bro. >> I get it. When we have other people yelling at us and screaming at us and trying to get our attention and dividing our attention for what we have to do, that's when mistakes get made. We need to have all of our attention on what we're trying to do in the moment. I had every intention of coming over and talking to you once I had things calmed down, okay? >> Where's the baby? >> Baby in the car. >> Hey. >> Um what did they what did they take? What did you see? What did they take? What happened? >> Okay, so I noticed her. She had stuff in the bags already. >> Okay. What kind of what kind of bags? >> Uh Metro Market bags. >> Okay. >> Then she hit the door. Once Mom gets here, I'll talk to Mom. >> Okay, so what do you need for her to verify her own job? >> It's a driver's license. >> He just need her driver's license. >> And the best day of my vacation was I opened the door and the little little girl goes, "Mommy." That's always a good sign. >> But I'm saying she didn't notice me because I had my mask and my hat on. And she she You didn't even get a chance to look at me. She knows exactly who I am. >> I get it. We were we were in the middle of a lot of things happening all at once. >> I understand. >> All right, we cool? So, let's hang out and wait for Mom. Once Mom gets here, I'll get the kid to Mom. >> Here, move your foot. I'm going to open the door, but I'm going to roll the window down, okay? >> All right, get Mom's info here. >> WHERE'S MY DAUGHTER? WHERE'S MY DAUGHTER? >> YOU NEED TO RELAX. >> DAUGHTER? >> Right here. Do you have a right in the back there. I'll let you out. Come here. >> Come here. It's a fight. Okay. I'm right here. >> All right, you have the right to remain silent. Do you understand the rights? >> Yes. >> Do you want to talk to me about what happened? >> Um I wanted to do this when you all picked her and picked her up and come back and left. >> You went to pick her up where? >> I don't know who where. I just picked her up and we went to the store, okay, came back and it was just that. >> What store? >> Metro Market. >> Did you go in the store? >> No. >> No. >> So when you were leaving Metro Market, did you see the lights, the police lights? >> Uh when they was coming towards towards me, they wasn't behind me. They was like coming the opposite direction, so it was like they wasn't pulling me over from behind. Then I tried to pull over to the right lane, but then the car that was in the middle lane drifted over to the right lane, which maybe caused me to they were in. >> Okay. After you had that car, it sounded like you were hitting the gas. >> No, I was it was I'm like it was stalled. I'm like, "What the hell?" I thought I hit it in neutral and then I reached in the back with my I still I still step step my foot on the pedal as I was reaching back to interact with my daughter. >> So I'm going to jail because of these or because of the warrants? >> Both. >> I'm talking to this guy. >> I'm talking to you. >> [snorts] >> I know. I know, but I was just talking to him. Sorry. Not to be rude. >> Both. >> The female suspect, Alisha was charged with retail theft intentionally taking less than or equal to $500 worth of items and obstructing an officer. She took a plea deal [music] pleading guilty to both charges in exchange for the sentence of 15 months on probation. The male suspect, John, was charged with felony fleeing and eluding, hit-and-run, two counts of felony second degree recklessly endangering safety, and retail theft with a modifier as being a party to the crime. He also took a plea deal, pleading guilty to all charges in exchange for the sentence of serving 2 years in the state prison and 2 years of extended supervision. He was also ordered to pay $3,680 to the victims in the truck he crashed into. His daughter received no injuries from the crash and is now in her mother's custody. >> That child is lucky to be alive. Between 2009 and 2023, there were a total of 5,425 fatal motor vehicle crashes involving police pursuits resulting in 6,352 people killed, according to a study from JAMA Network. >> And that's not even mentioning the fact that her own father used her as a human shield to protect himself from potentially getting shot. A study from Tactical Science actually found that one in six pursuit calls ended in some form of use of force. So, based on the statistics, this incident actually had a fairly high chance to end way worse than it did. My only hope is that the little girl's mother is infinitely more responsible than her father, so she can grow up to live a better life. I'm a father, and our job is to stand between danger and our child. This man did the exact opposite, and that's a decision that his daughter may never forget, even if the courts eventually do.
