It turned out Roberts was already facing serious felony charges, including attempted assault and illegal gun possession. He was rushed to the hospital, but later died from his injuries. Thankfully, the child in the car was not hurt. But unlike this case, the officer in our next story faced a truly tragic event. He was run over by a trailer, suffering severe injuries as a result. Where'd he hit you? The car ran over the [ __ ] trailer. On May 3rd, 2024, around 3:00 a.m., Bell Isle police officer Zachary Matthews pulled over a pickup truck towing a trailer with a broken light. At first, everything seemed routine. The driver was cooperative and respectful. But in an instant, the situation took a drastic turn. What began as a simple traffic stop quickly became a fight for Officer Matthews life. How you doing, sir? What's up, man? Hey, my name's Officer Matthews with Balman. Yes, sir. The reason I'm stopping you is you have the trailer back there without any lights on and no tag light on there at all. What? May I May I get out? Yeah, give me one second though. Matter of fact, my paperwork is even better now. Cool. Awesome. The officers collected all the necessary documents and ran a background check identifying the driver as 38-year-old Carlos Jerome Miller. The check revealed a criminal history and both Officer Matthews and his partner noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle. These red flags led them to detain Miller, but suddenly he became violently resistant. The officers were forced to use physical force to try and subdue him. All right, Carlos. So, all right, boss. So, what I have you do Okay, I'll have you step out with me. Okay. Well, I'm not asking right now. Okay. So, I smell the odor of burnt cannabis in this vehicle. Medics determined he had sustained serious back injuries and rushed him to the hospital. After receiving treatment, his recovery took several months. Miller was charged with aggravated battery, resisting an officer, drug possession, and possession of a firearm. If convicted, he faces the possibility of several years behind bars. In the next case, the officer was shot by a suspect who then stole his patrol vehicle. The tragic chain of events ultimately led to the suspect's own death. 802, I'm hitting the light. He's taking off with a patrol vehicle. On October 15th, 2023, a California Highway Patrol officer pulled over 39-year-old Joseph Pate after multiple drivers called in reports of his reckless driving. When the officer approached, Pate refused to roll down his window or respond. Hey, can you roll down your window? Feeling something was off, the officer started heading back to his patrol car. Without warning, Pate jumped out of his car, armed with an AR-15, and opened fire on the officer. Even after hitting Pate multiple times, the officer held back from approaching, and it turned out to be the right call. Just 2 minutes later, in a shocking twist, Pate got back up. This time, Pate fired again, hitting the officer in the leg before seizing one of the patrol vehicles. He managed to drive for a few minutes, but his escape was short-lived. Pate lost control of the car, crashing into a truck and finally ending up in a ditch. [Music] I'll take it again. Fire's coming. That's good. That's good. Pate was taken into police custody and rushed to the hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries. Fortunately, both the truck driver and the police officer made full recoveries after the incident. In the next case, the suspect sped off with a police officer clinging to the hood of the car, resulting in serious injuries. Stop the [ __ ] car. Stop it. Eventually, the officer lost his grip and fell, suffering several serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
