He's running. He's running. I got him. >> July 11th, 2022. Deputies in Florida were dealing with a man who had already pulled off one of the most Florida style escapes you could imagine. His name, Dusty Mobley, 40, of Holt, Florida. Earlier that year, he allegedly avoided arrest by diving straight into a swamp. Not running down the street, not hiding in a shed, a swamp. So, when deputies came back looking for him that Saturday, you would think he might have learned from the first close call. But instead, he decided to upgrade his escape plan from swamp creature to high-speed lawn care. >> Now, we have eyes on >> I got eyes on the subject. >> He's approaching the subject. He's on a fast normal >> Push forward now. >> He's running. He's running. I got him. >> Wow. >> On the ground. Down. >> I just saw him go down. >> Get on the ground, now. Get on the ground. >> Don't move. >> Handcuffs. Handcuffs. >> Deputies arrived, they found him outside mowing the lawn like it was just another normal day. And honestly, that might be the funniest part of this whole situation. This man was allegedly wanted, had already escaped once by disappearing into a swamp, and somehow thought the best thing to do when deputies pulled up was to keep cutting the grass. But, once he realized they were there for him, the lawn service officially turned into a pursuit. >> Oh, man. >> Hey, bud. You okay? >> You good, Dusty? >> You okay? >> 199 SL? >> Dusty, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in court. You have the right to talk to a lawyer for advice before we ask you any questions and to have him with you during questioning. If you can't afford a lawyer, one will will be appointed for you before any questions, if you wish. If you decide to answer our questions without the lawyer present, you still have the right to stop answering at any time. You also have the right to stop answering questions at any time until you talk to your lawyer. Do you understand your rights I just read to you? >> Front side. >> You got the right to watch this question. >> Gun. >> Don't touch it. Gloves. >> When Mobley was taken into custody, deputies searched him and found even more problems. According to police, he had a revolver on him, a handcuff key, and a pipe with methamphetamine residue. So, this wasn't just a man making a bad decision on a stolen lawn mower. This was a man allegedly carrying a whole I'm not planning to make this arrest easy starter pack. A revolver already makes the situation more serious. >> You know how to unload it? >> Yeah, but I didn't know that was what to do. >> There's items in that pocket. Any drugs? >> Oh. My camera came unplugged. >> That's all right. I got a great view you guys coming all the way up here. >> Oh, that? Yeah, maybe. Yeah. I got that actually. Hey bud, I need you to talk to me. Are you okay? Are you hurt? Huh? You feel funny? What's wrong? Your chest? Let's get off your chest. Do me a favor, keep this leg crossed for me. Don't move. >> Between the Florida heat, the adrenaline, and getting hit with a taser, Mobley was clearly feeling every bit of that moment. He could barely get his words out, and the whole situation went from ridiculous to, all right, somebody get this man some water. Thankfully, one of the nearby officers stepped in and gave him something to drink. Because at the end of the day, even when someone makes a terrible decision, tries to run from deputies on lawn equipment, and turns the whole arrest into a backyard episode of cops landscaping edition, you still have to make sure he's okay. >> Yes, sir. >> Hey, this is an important question. Have you used narcotics recently? It's very important you answer me correctly so we know how to take care of you. >> I went to go put my hands on him. My hands got between the uh >> New Hickeys. >> Buddy, I need you to talk to me, bud. >> I'm just >> You got water? >> You got water? We can see if we can get you some. EMS is is coming here. >> Hey, I'll head to my car. >> Uh >> I'm in the car. >> I got >> I got a agency phone. >> I got phone. >> Let's take photos of where the probes are at, please. >> those off? >> I want to go to get my car. >> Yeah, I got it. >> Ray, you good here? >> Yeah, I'm good. >> You're good. >> Dusty. Dusty. >> I need you to stay with me, bud. All right. Roll to your stomach for me. >> All right, get pictures of his back so we can do >> Did you? Where you hurting? Where you hurting? I'm sorry? >> The cuffs. >> You got this already? Let me stack your gloves. You got a set on you, right? You got to get him up on the other side. Ray, is your car up front there? Is your car up front there? All right, they got Hey, come here. I want to show you this. Can you hold the rifle for me, please? >> Yeah. It's on safe. >> All right, have you ever removed the probe? It's been one time. >> All right. You're going to tighten the probe or tighten the skin, excuse me. Hey Dusty, is anybody else here at home with you? Grab it. Is mom here? No. Anybody else that can open the gate so EMS can come get you? Gate will open with it's in the golf cart. You got it? You want to go get it? Take photo of his back wound. Got it? >> Yep. >> Hey, if you guys want to start dropping some plates and stuff, you can uh put them in my car. >> take one more picture of his chest. >> Yep. >> Take a far and then a close. Dusty, is it okay if I lift your shirt? Is that all right? >> All right. >> Okay, far. Close. What time is it? I can't tell. All right Dusty, we're going to stand up, okay? We're going to do a secondary search on this guy. >> Hold on, let me get Let me get some gloves. Oh, here. You got gloves. >> I think I hit him three times. I heard three rounds. I know I shot twice. >> Do me a favor. Dusty, take this leg, bend it. All right, you're going to go to your knees. All right, one, two, and Hop on the other side. All right, we're going to stand up on three. One, two, three, stand up. Here we go. Let's go to the vehicle. Give your gloves up. >> Yeah. >> No, we're going to do a secondary. Open this here for a second. Just got a probe dangling. Is there another one in you? Is there another one? Yep, one in the chest. Here you go. I'm sorry. This one you're going to feel this one. There you go. We're out. Can I get a picture of that Is that okay? Is that okay with you? I'll get you in there as soon as we're done. >> Can you take a picture of that? >> Your chest is hurt? Have a seat for me. What else hurting right now Dusty? Just your chest? Okay. Did you know if you fell on anything or did is it just just from the taser you think? >> You guys see the strobe light on his gun? He's got a little magnum. >> Well, that came from him. Was there any dope or just paraphernalia? >> Just paraphernalia. >> Yeah. We got resisting, possession by convicted felon. >> What else hurting right >> Just paraphernalia. Yeah. >> May or may not be a reported stolen. >> Yeah. You guys see the video? It's awesome. You see you guys running after him? You hear and I could hear it pop. And I saw and you can see him lock up on the the first time you'll hit him and he locked up this in the seat? >> Can you see him moving up from the Oh, that way. >> Uh so, I saw Ray coming around the the the shed over here. And then I whenever y'all started coming in, I was kind of focusing on Ray and on him cuz he was moving this way. And I was over on this at this angle looking down. But then you could see you guys and Ray coming in together chasing him. I could clearly hear you say, "Stop! Stop!" And he and he made a beeline. Well, heck, that's his line right there. If you want evidence of actively trying to resist, he was mowing over there and took off this way. You don't know. Okay. All right, we got EMS to come check in you out, okay? Hey, I'm the Corporal on Duty. My name's Mark Justice. Um because we used the taser on you, then I just have to check with you because it's a use of force incident. Make sure that you understand why um you know, the force was used, the taser was used, okay? You have any questions about that? Okay. And um we're going to EMS coming to um check you out and take care of any um any um complaints of any injuries and we'll get you treated and everything, okay? You have any, all right. Do you have any complaints about any kind of excessive use of force or anything against you? >> Hey Colona, you want this? You want us to take it? >> Possibly twice, maybe a third time. I wasn't going to argue with that. >> What started as a ridiculous slow-speed escape quickly turned into a serious arrest involving stolen property, a weapon, drug paraphernalia, and a key that definitely was not helping his case. >> We have the drone video though. >> Yeah, I'll get that put into evidence when we all break from here and we go back. >> Get what put in evidence? >> The video. >> Thank you. Um That's uh I have it unloaded, right? >> Yeah. >> There's a key on it, little car key, automatic. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hang up. >> Dude, do me a favor, I'll finish this up. >> But after deputies finally got Mobley secured, they ran the serial number on the lawn mower. And that's when this story somehow got even more ridiculous. Because not only was he allegedly trying to escape on a riding lawn mower, the lawn mower didn't even belong to him. The mower had already been reported stolen. >> Lawn mower stolen. Lawn mower stolen. >> Yep. Yeah. It's stolen. >> Deputies contacted the owner, and the owner confirmed that yes, that was his lawn mower. So now Mobley didn't just allegedly turn a lawn mower into a getaway vehicle. He allegedly tried to flee from police on stolen landscaping equipment. >> Hey, you Brian? Are you Brian? >> Yes, sir. >> Bring it. >> That's ours. >> All right. Um did you bring a trailer? >> No, that's what I I had to call one of my crews to bring it up. >> Unfortunately, we uh looked as much as we could, there's no sign of the trailer or the other mower here. >> Well, a matter I was actually thinking about this on the way over here. We We called in and let the detective know. Um I think it was like Wednesday. I think I got a call from a fella. Um >> That goes really loud. I'm just checking something out. >> Yeah, good. Uh he was uh He He had to go out of town last week, had a death in the family. >> Mhm. >> He was finishing bush hogging back side of his He was coming up and in the He said he saw a a green John Deere mower and he noticed that it had the wheels on the back of it. He was like, "That's weird." >> Yeah, those aren't cheap. >> Yeah. And >> That's what made us run it is cuz like we he tried to run from us on it and we tased him while he was on it. >> God damn. >> He was cutting grass and he cut across here. After we got him all squared away and we're getting him packaged up, I said, "Those are some expensive tires. Can't afford that." I said, "Anybody run the serial number on this?" We ran it. I was like, "Holy crap." >> Yep. >> Uh Deputy Craig took your took your initial report, right? >> Uh yes. >> Little short girl? >> Yep. Yep. >> Yep. >> Yep. And we called uh we called the detective. We I gave him the story about how that fellow saw it and somebody came and loaded it up on a trailer and uh so we called and gave all that information uh either Wednesday or Thursday morning. Um but yeah, I mean, I was as soon as he said that it was those back tires, I was like, "That's 100% ours." >> Mhm. All right. So, you got So, you got um somebody coming with with a trailer, right? >> pulled them off. Uh >> Was that in there when it got stolen? >> More than likely, yeah. >> Okay. >> They keep a little bit on them if they got to hop off. I don't think there was other than me and >> Any damages to it that you can report that weren't on it whenever you it was stolen? >> Oh, other than the stickers, you know. That's where that was. >> Oh, that was your company stickers? >> Yeah. That was That's the unit sticker and right here was the uh last four of the VIN. >> Okay. >> Uh no, other than that, they looked pretty pretty typical. That's why I buy them because they're hard to tear up, so. >> Amen, brother. Let me see what you're saying. Hey, I could see you when you come around the thing. You should You should be inside. >> I was hoping he'd drive right that way and I was hiding behind that right >> Yeah, I saw you. I saw you coming up. So, did that did that seem to help out any having the drone there? >> Yes, 100%. And if he took off on foot, it's a lot easier to keep eyes on him while I've been trying to find him. >> Hey. >> In my opinion. >> I don't know if you heard me. I was telling Tyler when they when you guys popped up whoever shot him the first time, you could see him lock up on the on the >> I heard him scream. I think we got >> Yeah. So, but from the drone, I was zoomed in. >> I think that was uh He got him the first time. I got him the second. Did he get hit three times? >> Yeah, yeah. >> Three times together and then >> Yeah, you guys are going to have to debrief with the corporal up. With the force and all that. >> No, he he ran easy. He ran on a stolen lawnmower. >> Yeah, my thing was that >> He didn't know it was a stolen lawnmower at the time, but he's got felony warrants in him. >> Look, I'm sure he knew it was stolen. I'm sure he's the one who stole it. >> Well, those were just stolen from Holt. I think Annis Craig took that case. It did she? >> Yep. >> Look at me. Pay attention. >> By the time it was all said and done, Mobley's list of charges was longer than the route he made it on that lawnmower. His current >> charges included grand theft, grand theft of a vehicle, felony criminal mischief, two counts of resisting an officer, possession of a concealed weapon by a felon, carrying a concealed handcuff key, possession of drug paraphernalia, felony failure to appear, and several others. So, what started as deputies pulling up on a man cutting grass turned into stolen property, weapons, drugs, resisting, and a failed getaway attempt that barely qualified as transportation. Mobley was eventually booked into the Okaloosa County Jail in Crestview, where he was held without bond. And honestly, if there was ever a reminder that running from police usually makes things worse, this might be it.
