Now we got to have some more. >> Get on the ground. On the ground now. Two suspects are taken into custody at gunpoint after a high-speed police chase through residential neighborhoods in St. George, Utah. What started as a routine shoplifting call at Walmart quickly escalated into a dangerous pursuit involving speeds over 90 mph, wrong-way freeway driving, and multiple near collisions with officers. Here's how it all unfolded. Hey, give me the air. I got one prone down at gunpoint. We're going to be exit four northbound exit. Stay right where you're at. Don't move. You reach for anything, I'll shoot you. You understand? What's your name? Uh Henry. Huh? Henry? You speak English, Henry? >> Yes. Okay. What's the other guy's name? Uh that's the that's basically my sister's boyfriend, but Right, but what's his name? >> boyfriend, but I mean, they I put him on the brother. Like Tony. Tony? Are you sure about that? Does he have any weapons on him? Any guns? All right. The Walmart loss prevention employee reviews surveillance footage with the officer. She confirms that suspect Anthony Perez loaded a full cart of merchandise, including a cooler, speaker, and other items, then walked out without paying for anything. Both suspects have prior theft cases at this same location. So, he did while I was watching him, he did the merchandise in that vehicle, none of that they purchased. And I did tell dispatch initially, he rang up some of it, but then he clicked on a weird button, kind of like makes the screen go darker, and it's asking a yes or no question at the bottom. Okay. But I gave him the back to confirm, he never paid for anything. He never paid for anything. So, there's a like a small cooler, an orange speaker box, and I can actually show you the items right there. Yeah. And yeah. Yeah, the speaker, the rug, wrapping paper, that cooler. I don't know if the cooler actually got things anything or items there. So, there may be stuff inside it. There may be, yeah. Um I I did not. I had my scope of back away. I knew from prior stuff that they were considered dangerous, so we Yeah, okay. And he knew that I was watching him, and he did it anyways. But we did not approach. And uh what's the total today? So, his theft, I'm going to have to go pull it. I believe it will be under 500. Um I don't remember the actual UPCs for these other items. What he scanned and didn't pay for was 240, so I think it will be under 500 unless he's got something significantly expensive in the cooler. This right here is where things get serious. The total amount stolen isn't just a number. It directly determines the charges. Cross a certain dollar threshold, and what could have been a minor offense quickly turns into a felony. Okay. Yeah, wrapping paper? Yeah. What's what Who is he? Is he Henry or >> So, this is uh the other one, Chris. Chris, okay. And then, yeah, Anthony Perez. Henry did the the other cart. He never went past our points of sale, so he doesn't have a theft. >> no new charges on Henry today, but I have him here, and have him under $500. At least so yeah. So, if we can make sure that they're informed of that trespass, Yeah. that would be awesome. You guys can just text it over, "Hey, they were both informed." Then I can sign it that it was for Yeah, they're they're both out in the parking lot still. Hey, somehow it all came back to here. And or close to it. Do you care we come out there and I know they returned the items, but that was pretty quick. Definitely Do they have any weapons on them in their vehicle that you know of? >> Not that I've heard heard of. No. It's just kind of But I I could have just messed up. Okay. Let me uh let me just try to out there. We're just on the north side, so whenever you're ready, you're good to come out. We still have both on scene, right? Yep. You got one here, you got the gray uh but no, sorry, the guy in yellow here, and then the guy in gray in that one. Yep. Okay, so they asked if it's okay if they just come do their formal trespass. Um just walk out and do it before we take off. You can trespass them. I they they just do like the special form. When they do it Okay. So, Okay, so what we're going to need to do is get on and look at the cases that these guys are listed as suspects in, and then find out what's the disposition. Are they That has a trespass filed, and then you can need to do an interview with both of them. Okay, I'll just see what the disposition is on those. Yeah, because if he has PC PC is there, then we need to book them in on the previous thefts too while we have them. I would follow it started. Have you done an interview with him yet, the passenger? I probably should. Passenger, right? Driver. Yeah, that would be me. I know they really interview me, but they like to at least have some charges like the main stuff like that. What are like some of the questions, Barry, for helpful bogus and similar things? Well, what you want to do is just see if he'll talk to you first and just ask him to tell you what happened. You know, why were you here today? Were you here in Walmart? Tell me about that. Right, try not to be confrontational first, just see if he'll talk to you and tell him to tell it all. And then just kind of go from there. Obviously, right? You understand that theft is a retail theft. They were planning on or they did take things past the point of sale. Unless it's robbery, talk about that. Try to get him to talk about what was going on in the car. Had they been throwing anything out on their way? Who owns the car? Where were you guys trying to go? Uh were you guys having any type of conversation in the car? Because I mean, this dude the passenger's in the car, he's like would you just tell him to just go, get get the hell out of here? Because what that does is helps establish that the passenger was actively involved. He was trying to get away, too. All right. So, we can, you know, we could both of them with robbery. Tell them that makes sense. Does that make sense? So, and then with the charges that will alert them that And you can talk to them and This is actually a smart move by the officer. [music] Instead of rushing in, he recognizes his lack of experience in these types of theft investigations and asks for guidance, something that can make a big difference in how the case is handled. Is this Anthony, right? You doing all right, man? Yeah. Medic said you're doing okay. Yeah, I'm good. Okay. All right, brother. So, there are some questions that I just I want to talk to you about just kind of what happened today, right? All right, Anthony, so just tell me what was going on today, like from the beginning. Like how did how did we get get here? Came to do a job out here at customer's house. Okay. Where are you from? Vegas. Okay, got you. So, you just came over today? Yes, sir. I assemble stuff like just anything like to see if it will take on sales. The model inside of houses. Already did. Oh, you already >> we came out here this morning. We had just finished, we were going home. So, why'd you guys want to come to Walmart? I don't [ __ ] know, man. We just [ __ ] came to Walmart. At first I was going to buy a couple of things. He's my my brother's baby mama. He he he helps me with some jobs sometimes when I need help. So, I bring him with me to help me work. Yeah. Cuz uh his mom and dad asked me that I take him with me. I ain't going to blame no one, but I I let him get the best of me, just [ __ ] got to my head when I knew better and just [ __ ] Like he said like he he said like we he wanted to steal some stuff. >> Well, basically, he's like look how easy it is out here, you know? No, I'm not blaming him. I'm saying I I got to know it's my fault, but I'm just saying how you see, you know? I got kids and [ __ ] I was doing really good. I am an independent contractor. I got I got people who work for me. And then once the cars were outside, I just I kind of froze. I didn't know what to do. I just I I just panicked. Yeah, you were the driver. You were the driver. Okay. I didn't know what to do. I just got scared. Like I was telling him for you know, I was a juvenile. I wasn't the best kid. So, I did have I didn't count it as the law. I I saw it all like 18 and up. I never caught no real charges except tickets, traffic tickets. Okay. Yeah, like I said, I got my kids. I used to be I just honestly I work six days out the week. I I was out doing good for myself. I was, you know, I I just [ __ ] bought that car. I used to be so [ __ ] up. They showed me your transaction inside of Walmart. I did see some stuff in the car. Your intention was to steal those items today. That's why we got into They called us and we got to go back. Okay. Can I pull my pants like You see belts too tight? >> No, my my belt is like right between my ass cheeks. Like hurting my Uh hurting like I pull my pants up or you Um yeah. >> Just pull them up. >> First look, well, we can unbuckle you for a second and let you fix that. There you go. You can if you can adjust them with your handcuffs like that. Try and keep it so both carts What's up, man? Is that Henry, right? Okay. I I just have some questions that I I want to talk to you about what happened today and everything. So, where are you from, man? Las Vegas? Okay. So, what were you guys doing over here today? Well, we actually came in the morning Morning like I would say 9:00 to 11:00. Just only like things that like people order stuff that like Okay, like got you. And you helped Anthony out with that? Okay, got you. Um so, you guys did that this morning. Were you going to plan on heading back to Vegas today? Yeah. Yeah, but like you know how like Chris We don't have that person right now. So, so we just got we got the like couple items. Well, not the two scooters. The two scooters got that yesterday. >> [snorts] >> Other items. Okay. Got you. I I even told him I was like we wasn't even trying to like cause no harm over here like crash out or anything. We're just trying to like get away, so I got you. The officer now contacts Walmart's loss prevention team leader to find out if anyone saw the suspects loading merchandise into their vehicle. >> [music] >> Unfortunately for the suspects, the information from this call only reveals additional charges. Hello. Hey, hope this is Officer Martinez again. I just had another question for you. Did you or anybody in the store see them take the stolen merchandise from from the store into their vehicle today? Yes. So, I was I was at the mall with him and I saw him Yeah. I totally Okay, awesome. That is perfect. Make contact with Hope. She saw him leave the store and load items into the car. So, are there still more property of Walmart? Yes. Yeah. >> Yeah, from from what I saw today it was like like a speaker a cooler Yeah, that's what I saw. Is there a way you can find out if any one of them is willing to 25 us over here? Uh to if we find that property, we can just release it back to them. If a Walmart shows up with finding that property, we'll just release it right to Walmart. All right, sounds good. All right, that's nice. So, what should we do and fix this up for here? All right, brother. Sorry about that. So, you're saying you guys kind of decided like if they getting close to Christmas time, you want to come get some some stuff. You have kids if you want to get some >> I I don't. He does. Okay. He's basically dating my sister's boyfriend. My Well, basically his brother is dating my sister, so basically uh Brother's dating your sister. Okay, so you guys kind of know each other through family. Okay. That makes sense. Um so, did you take anything from the store today? >> I did not. No? No. How come you decided you decided not to? Cuz I mean I I was just going to take like uh like a toy for his son and that's about it. Okay. And ultimately decided you didn't want to take anything. >> I'd rather just wait to make money. Cuz I mean I I I I had money myself, but the money I had like when I was working I done spent it all. Made like almost 80K within 7 months. Yeah, that's all. Yeah. Not good. Right now I'm just stuck struggling with cash. Like if you search up my my history of working, I haven't worked for like almost about a year. Okay. They did say that they have you guys on some previous thefts from here and that's kind of why they called us to come over here so quick. So, it was there a few incidents where you guys did come and take take stuff from here? >> No, we have we have the camera here. Never been here before? >> No, just this our first time. So, they're pretty certain like they were able to tell us they like your guys' names. There wasn't a previous incident where you where you you guys came here and stole stuff? >> cuz the last time we came here was a month ago. Did you steal stuff when you came a month ago? So, Anthony told me that he did take that he did take some stuff today from the store. >> Yeah, I know. All right, he did tell me that. And then you were aware of him doing that? The two scooters were we been had that, but the other like he said like a speaker, yeah, that just that and then the just two of the like the coolers and then that's about it. That he took that just for himself like moves at home. Okay. And that's what I told y'all. I was like I they're only taking nothing cuz it's random you guys. But like the little items that you took, that's basically Got you. So, what happened once you guys got to the parking lot? Like what how did it escalate into you guys running running away? He said that there's police somewhere else. It was like they just drove off and instead of and that's when we seen the sheriff truck come and then that's when we got scared. And that's when we started running. That's when we spun out crashed three like over there and then that's when we crashed out here. Got you. Okay. Yeah, he's mad at himself just cuz that car they gave it to him. Like his his his one that he's at work is they work with Yeah. They did like call him on the work so that he could put that car off him. So, does it not belong to him? Oh, it does. >> It does, but he had to work his like like a boss gave it to him. >> Yeah, yeah, that's Okay. >> he still hasn't registered it. Like basically has a 30-day moving permit. So, basically I'll say Vegas owned. It'd be possible. So, I was just trying to get away so I could just like you know the transit bus that takes you back. Yeah. Yeah, I was just going So, did you ever get out of the car to try and get it to leave? Uh no I mean I did I didn't want to leave him cuz you know I know I know his brother. But at the same time with I thought we were going to just leave, but I mean I ain't want to get off cuz it's a far walk. Got you. So, you did So, you wanted to leave ultimately you leave felt like you wanted to you need you want to stay with him cuz he's your friend. Okay. I mean he's not a bad guy. He just Yeah, I don't I'm I'm not saying that he is. You know, obviously you know, whatever happened today, we have to deal with it. He's terrible for what happened so that we can move all move past it, right? So, do you feel like it was like it was pretty obvious that Anthony knew like that police were chasing him and that he was trying to run away? Yeah, cuz I mean he did want to stop, but I you got to be a better friend. He felt like he was kind of in too deep yeah, at that point. Really? >> Okay. Like he just felt like there was too much heat on you right then. Okay. That makes sense. And we wasn't trying to run from you. We were just trying to get away, get out of trouble. Yeah, okay. All right, brother. I appreciate it. Um just hang tight for a minute. Bye. Brothers, sorry about that. You need some more water? What? Like what was going through your mind or what happened like once you got out of the parking lot and you saw saw a few cops out here? I panicked. I got scared. You guys I ain't going to lie, you guys out here are [ __ ] cool as [ __ ] cuz Vegas cops they're [ __ ] [ __ ] were I don't got no excuse. I just panicked. I just thought about everything. Just thought about my job and everything I've been working so hard for. Everything is taken away right in front of my eyes, you know, with my kids, my my job and everything I got I've been working for so hard. It's taken a long time to finally get to this position where I'm at and then it's just that's just went all through my head. I [ __ ] panicked, froze, I got scared. I didn't know what to Like why did why didn't you guys get on I-15 and try and go back to Vegas right away? Why did you drive around all the neighborhoods and stuff? Just [ __ ] just try try to get away, hide try to hide or something. You know, just cuz I knew where to get back on I-15 is where that's a straight road. You know. Just felt like there was too many cops. >> try to get out of the store, get back home to my kids. Cuz I know it was just something stupid. Like they just stealing, you know, it's not that serious. >> [cough] >> I didn't know what to do. What do I do? Yeah, they did say that they found some some drugs back inside your car. Do you do you know what what would be there? Drugs? What kind of drugs? They didn't tell me to be honest with you. But they didn't say they found some they found some drugs in your car. Um only drugs weed weed I don't know that's what you got the drugs. Yeah, I mean Utah weed is illegal. So, it it might just be it might just be that. That's the only thing Which isn't it? Yeah, it's paraphernalia >> Paraphernalia paraphernalia Okay. I mean the only other thing Paraphernalia paraphernalia paraphernalia It's meth. Meth? Okay. That's the only thing. Hang tight one sec. Someone's giving me a ring. Okay. What's the name on that? I'll write it write it down for Okay. So, meth and then so weed, meth, and paraphernalia. Okay. Yeah, he admitted to the meth and weed. All all last month about those other things. All right, cool. Thank you. But all right. Okay, so I just saw the other people that were over at your car. The the pills they're they're from my medication I had down in the car accident. There's a paper in there in the car that says what they're from. I had gotten in the accident Okay, so you do have a prescription in the car There should be a paper from a pharmacy right there. It's for I had gotten in the car accident. That's what I told them. Okay. What's going to happen to my car? I don't know to be honest with you. Is he registered to you? I had just bought it from a customer. The the the the the title's inside the glove compartment. I had just bought it. >> He just bought it how do I but haven't registered gotten to change to register yet? Just bought it this week. Okay. So, what's going to happen to the car? Um >> [snorts] >> One second, man. Let me let me ask you about one other thing first cuz I don't know how to deal with going on. So, um you did say you were pretty sure that there would be weed in there. Um they did find weed. Um but they didn't find meth. Yeah, he did tell me that. The suspect begins to vent to the officer reflecting on the decisions that led him to this moment. The officer responds with compassion encouraging him to do better and treat this as a lesson moving forward. With the suspect admitting to meth use and describing ongoing stress at home, it's clear he's dealing with deeper issues. Which I I you straight up about that. The weed's worn and uh Worry I'm going to go guys if you want to I started re- trying to start using like there's I got so stressed out cuz I was working so much. It's just I read that it's just [ __ ] just being a parent just worried about it. Easy way out and I was getting home so tired and my kids and my Well, they expect everything when I get home they go to sleep. Like my wife is the one who do this and that and it's just it's hard It was hard for me for especially from where I came from like being so young always Everybody always, you know, just looking down on me cuz I when I was growing up I was a trouble kid. When I started getting good money was I felt like everybody's just expecting a lot from me and just everybody's just asking me and just all started piling up on me. It's hard for me. It's just And when you know when you trying to do good and all people just always putting down on you saying this this and this. So it's hard on Yeah, I understand that dude, but but this tough. It's a lot right now cuz all this went went down and you got a lot of trail from everything that happened today. We got to figure all that out, right? You got to be accountable for for what did go down today, but that by no means like that's not the end of things, but obviously, you know, but just use this as a good opportunity to get clean, stop using that [ __ ] and, you know, start doing good things again cuz you have been on that on that good path before, right? I had I had it down on those serious charges. >> Yeah, man, but just track it to your sister's house. There's I've been real down. I had it. That's great. I thought it was shitty. This that should make this easier to take care of and get back to your life. Get back to your kids, get your back to being a good dad. Just keep all that in mind man cuz that's personally what I got to do is I couldn't make get myself to do real life stuff if I didn't have kids, you know, so That's honestly what made me go work. Yeah, get back on track with everything. You'll be fine, right? But there is a process for the way we got to take care of things today. So what's going to happen? You're probably going to go to jail. It's worse than your life, to be honest with you. That doesn't mean you got to be there a long time. It's my job but it's job I got to take me up. Took me to boot camp and so They don't set there and say whatever my dad got back those special opportunities. You know, they gave me a chance to You know, I've been with them two years now. Okay. They gave me a chance where I could prove myself, right? Start going up the ranks and then become a sole contractor there. Like I said, man, I [ __ ] I was paying them through this by some [ __ ] rising down. I was [music] going to pay for that in there. And then once I kicked that out I just did it over with. Everything just started going right before my eyes. You know, it was just everything everything my family was saying. Everything everybody was saying is basically don't be saying saying [ __ ] to me. I'll tell you I'll tell you all about it down here I am proving them right again so I can just Cuz they You know, everybody's always telling me I've been five years I haven't got no charge or haven't been You know, they never tell me nothing good. Like oh, you did you know, you see me work, see me work full time, see me take care of the I pay all the bills. I pay You know, I I pay everything. We got a two-story house and my wife I pay They don't pay nothing. Her mom stay there. None of them pay one single bill. I pay all the bills up here. Everything there is to pay and this is This is all this is all I'm trying I was always putting everybody first besides me trying to make everybody else happy. But the whole time I'm not happy myself, you know, it's just That's my problem with putting everybody else before me. I see. Well, I I think you seem like a pretty cool man, pretty cool dude. I think I think you'll be all right from all of this. It It's going to It's going to be heavy right now, but just hang in there, man. What are we going to charge with? Uh I don't know every everything yet. Uh we'll we'll let you know before we go, but is So, is there any of the drug stuff that I need to talk to Henry about? Him holding any of it or is it all yours? Or okay. All right, brother. Hang tight for a minute. All right, I think we're in a good place with everything. So, where we at? He admitted to the retail theft today and he didn't he didn't take anything else today. He He also admitted that he stole stuff today and I did question him on about some previous incidents with their belongings here and then they both have cooperated the evading stuff. He said he didn't want to do it, but he felt like he was his friend so he had to stay with him. Cuz at one point he was kind of saying to me like he was trying to get out of the car and I was like, "Did you ever actually get out of the car at some point?" He was like, "No." And he said after he was my friend I had to stay with him. He said that he when he saw a couple cops here he just got scared, thought that he could run away from us in the short term and lose lose the heat and then and then head back to Vegas. Paul said that's why they wanted to drive around old neighborhoods and stuff cuz they just kept trying to lose us cuz they felt like they would for sure get caught if they went on South bound I-15. So, they both said that it was intentional. Yeah. On their part they weren't lost. It was intentional. It was intentional. Yeah, they were on the freeway they didn't care. So, that gives even more intention. Intention. They had a reckless driving for the felony. That needs to be spelled out because they admitted They intentionally intentionally stayed in neighborhoods and in surface streets driving at freeway speeds. They intended to lose the officers. They intentionally did not get on I-15 even though they would get caught up there. So, that That could He ends up endangering public pedestrians and individuals on bicycles. Massive risk death and serious bodily injury. Yeah. We are We are We are not lost. Yeah, they they both said they said that was the reason why they didn't just go He claims all the 35 stuff. Said it's all his it's his. There is a warrant issued for for him on that previous retail theft from here. Okay. And they did not issue one for him so they obviously felt like it was him that was predominantly involved. Really just just the 35 stuff for him. They found weed, meth, paraphernalia and they found hydrocodone. He's adamant that he has a prescription for it, but he doesn't have the bottle obviously. So, they'll be charging with not having a prescription or they'll be charging with the possession of Possession of schedule two but he's an individual. And that's the easy one for him if he has a prescription. Prosecutor They'll just charge him with it. Wasn't able to provide one then how was it Like the prosecutor One way to report things which is order of scene and how much he used I don't know how much he used in the car. So, if you're asking the question, right? Don't ask putting it on him like Yeah, don't ask the question, Bill. It's like when you pull somebody over and go, "Have you been drinking?" Never say that. Say, "How much have you been Cuz if you say, "Have you been drinking?" Even if they have it's just they're going to go twice as in a lie to you. No. Rather than when you ask the question as if they're Okay. That makes sense? Yeah, yeah. For sure. When's the last time you used meth? When's the last time you used marijuana? On track. It's there at with them. They took his stuff out. So, Vinnie, when was the last time that you used meth? Yeah. I haven't done them. Okay. So, they did find they did find some meth in the car and it's I mean we're looking at about like 5.45 so we're trying to figure out like how much of that you would have used. Uh no, we we ain't done none. We just I I I did see it burn. Okay. So, I just believe that I left my wallet So, you used to do meth but you don't anymore? Yeah, a while ago I did. Okay. I've been doing Yeah, it was like what you've been doing is a wax pen. Yeah, yeah. Wax I smoke weed. How uh how long When did you last use the the weed? I just smoked yesterday. Okay. What time do you think it was today that you that you used there? Before all this happened? All this happened Uh hydrocodones, you use those? So, they did find some hydrocodones in the car. Do you know? No, I don't I don't I don't know what that is. So, so you the only the only drugs that you had in there would have would have been the THC. Okay. But you know, and then he's the Yeah, I did see the it's He does have a pipe with Essex on it. Okay. So, when was the last time you saw Anthony and smoked meth? Uh Anthony? Yeah. Uh uh no, I don't know if he Why you keep always using the meth? pipe in his car? Cuz that's his homie. You You just witnessed him yesterday. Okay. I just saw him Go for it. All right. Did either of you use marijuana today? I did. I did. You guys both use it at the same time? This morning. All right. Okay, Brian. Thank you. Yeah. As for the driver, you've got what? Got reckless endangerment of a Walmart. That's going to be but you've got felony evading. Got reckless endangerment. You've got then failure to stop at the Reckless evading on a foot. Yeah. All right. I'm also charged with reckless driving. What about the aggravated assault? Two counts of aggravated assault. Driving directly at me. And me. That's a three counts of aggravated All right. Three counts. Only two? The reckless endangerment Specifically which one? Getting on the wrong way on the freeway at route I was driving Coming past you. on purpose on surface streets at excessive speed. All right. And then don't forget the right. Possession of meth? Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Possession of marijuana. Please sign the paperwork. Yeah, yeah. And don't be able to move on. That's what we're going to do. process Yeah. Yeah, dude. It was an iPhone. It was left in your car. It wasn't in the car. It's a felony don't take it well. That's That's not What's going to happen to my car? Oh, I think they I think they're going to do like a Like you got towed. I don't know what type of tow they did on it but it got towed. So, I It's not towable? No, and I just bought the car like a like a week ago like this weekend. The guy he gave me the He gave me the title like there all the paperwork. I just put it in the duh department cuz I was still from there I was breaking it down. Get it registered on the car so everything's like literally everything's inside of it. [ __ ] It's an iPhone. I don't know how to use it. Just He just signed over the title or like made me sign the title. And now I got no way of proving the car is mine cuz everything's inside the car. So, in my case, would you say Would you say I got serious charges? Are those serious charges? They're They're pretty They're pretty serious. >> Are they? Yeah.
