It started as a routine transaction at a local bank, but within minutes, this woman found herself in handcuffs. Officers arrived to detain her for investigation after the bank flagged a suspicious check. somebody waiting for you outside or did you come down? >> And I need to talk to whoever she was working with outside. I might need to cuz um you remember my name, you're going to see it. I don't have any. >> Okay. We can figure out. >> So, this right here just got me, too. >> I'm waiting for whoever to talk to me. >> Okay. >> Where's the check you were trying to cash? >> They have it. >> They have it. Okay. Where's your ID? Is it in your bag? >> No, I have it. >> In your pocket or your your bra? >> In my breast. >> Okay. Can I grab it? >> I have a glove on. Well, >> you want to uncover you cover it. >> I'm going to have to get it anyways. You want to uncover him and then uh >> want to what? >> You said you want to uncover while we're investigating or you think why you >> She was already trying to leave this. >> Okay. So, >> I wasn't trying to leave. I just asked if I could wait for another one for a larger amount at the Dr. Phillips location probably a few minutes ago earlier today. Um the the um owner of the account asked me to press have her call the cops and have her arrested because they want to pledge to the name of >> So this is a real company. >> This is a real company. Um >> but they say that this is not their check. >> Correct. >> Okay. All right. Fair enough. Um we'll probably need to get some contact information like a phone call. >> I gave it to the um the dispatcher. Yes. >> We may or may not get it back get it from you as well. Work on this. All right. Thank you so much. Do you want to keep that? >> Oh, just for now we will. Okay. All right. >> No problem. >> Um if it's just trash. >> All right. Okay. So, what you got so far? >> She got something outside in her car. >> The suspect was attempting to cash a check for nearly $5,000. However, the bank had already received a warning. The account owner, a company called Aircraft Demolition, reported their checks were being used in a massive fraud scheme. >> So, this is just something that I have to read whenever something happens and we're investigating. I'm sure you know what it is. >> Um, >> Mer. Yeah. >> Can you tell me where you got the check from? >> It was mailed to me because of the the marketplace. So, with me not putting my business actually out there cuz I don't need a certificate for anything when it's coming to my property or what I'm doing with my food or how I choose to help people, you know. But marketplace, he signed me the check. And all of a sudden, I'm getting this. I live over here in Orlando. My ID says something. >> So, this is this is really some cuz I don't even have a record. This is crazy. >> He said marketplace. Facebook Marketplace. >> Yes. >> Okay. Why is he sending you a check? >> Well, because of the deposit that he was putting down for the renting up the space that he wanted. >> So, you're a tenant or a landlord? >> Yeah. So, okay. Your property. >> Yeah. You know, trying to get some extra money. I'm trying to get an RV. Trying to get out of here. And the best way to do it if I can rent out property, if I can sell off plates, or if I can just help anyone, any anything, any kind of way I can do it. >> Okay. So, they were saying that at the Dr. Phillips location of regions, you also cashed different checks. >> Well, it's from the same time. It's it's it's literally a big check. So, cashing a big check in one walk. I don't have an account, which is pretty difficult to do anyways when you trying to cash something so large. >> Okay, >> I'm trying to get something now so I can do this now because Kimmy has me on their file for now to get the RV. So, I'm trying to do everything before the storm comes as as fast as possible. >> Okay. So, why did you cash both checks at one location? And why did you go all the way from Dr. Phillips to McCoe? >> Well, I do it anyways cuz of it. It's It's not showing that you're trying to overdo it, overbear with the taking the advantage of cashing so many checks cuz of so many people go in cash so many checks. They do so many things and things turn out wrong. So, I didn't want any mishaps or anything to happen, but I didn't never think that this would come across that I get a a final check and it's this. >> After being read her Miranda rights, the suspect spun an elaborate web. She claimed the money was a deposit from a man named Rudolph she met on Facebook Marketplace to rent space on her property. So, if you didn't think it looked weird or you didn't think that you were doing anything wrong, why didn't you just go ahead and catch them in the same location and not really worry about that? If you're not doing anything wrong, it should be an issue. >> Well, it looks it looks wrong now. You're going to two different location. >> Well, now, yeah, I see. But I've been doing this for years. That's why I'm like I go to three to however many I have to depending on the size of the check. So, you know, it's like >> sometimes I get more some. No, I'm actually the person that does the lending for the homes, the food and stuff. I you know, so >> where's Wellington, Florida? >> Willington, Florida? >> Wellington, Florida. >> Yeah, that's uh miles out. So, >> is it >> And so you so you do the the books for Aircraft Demolition Incorporated. >> Say it was for off of Facebook, say the marketplace. >> Uhhuh. I was advertised in space. >> He needed area. >> I had the area. >> So when it was denied, >> this is what came back. So I'm >> What's the the name of the person that you were renting to? >> Say it's Rudolph. >> I'm sorry. >> Rudolph. >> Rudolph. That last name. First name. >> No, that's the first name. >> What's his last name? >> Say I didn't remember. So Let's just go after the first thing. >> So when I call up aircraft demolition corporate, they're going to have a guy named Rudolph that works there. >> He's going to know all about you. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Where do you stay at? >> Right here in Orlando, Florida. >> Orlando, Florida. Okay. >> Do you currently work anywhere else other than that? >> Say I work Five Guys. If five guys don't have any hours, I go to um the t uh the staffing >> at um Simon um and then Denny's not anything off international drive. >> Can I ask you just a straight up honest question? I mean it's up and again you're under Miranda so you know that but did did somebody borrow you or or rent or your like your ID or social security card any of your information or anything? Did they meet you like at the staffing center and say, "Hey, I'll give you money for for this that or whatever to use your social security card or your D driver's license." >> No, but my account have been hacked six times. So, a lot of my info has gotten out and been tampered with. So, I still trying to get that straightened out right now. Like, >> and how did you get here? >> I caught an Uber. >> Caught an Uber. Okay. All right. >> Where did $4,800 come into play? >> He's holding it. more money to hold his face so nobody else gets it. >> So, did you It's a bigger area. No, we haven't even gotten into he just hurry up and sent that and it's like, "Okay, we can do everything else afterwards, you know, cuz if he was going to come see it besides looking at it on photo or just live." >> So, I haven't seen it, but I'm going to give you six times what you're asking for it. So see it on just camera view live >> versus seeing live with your eyes, >> right? >> Something totally different. So you want >> But when you rent 750, I mean, even if you charge first, last, and deposit, >> that's only like $2,300. >> So just give me an extra 25 for >> to hold the space. >> Hold the space. Make sure >> like that. Just throw me an extra $2,500. >> Marketplace. You said marketplace. Yeah, cuz you know you can find a lot of stuff on >> Oh, yeah. >> Facebook. >> You have um you on Facebook then in your phone? >> Say it's like one of those um incarnator faces, but they'll talk to you through it. Like I have I have one from uh for the RV that I was supposed to be getting off there and nobody gets to sees that person's face, but you can actually just talk to a person or they'll call you back. >> You're still talking to somebody. So you have >> Yeah. So it's somebody I'm talking Yeah. that send that and now this and I'm like why >> can you show us that the conversation thread? >> Well, I don't know if it's still there but >> it shouldn't go away. >> Well, depending on what they do, you know, it's basically >> it still be there on your phone. They can delete. >> But the story quickly fell apart. When asked why she didn't cash all her checks at one branch, she claimed she didn't want to overbear the bank. In reality, she was bank hopping to avoid triggering fraud alerts. >> So, you have it listed now on Arthur Street in Orlando for rent. >> Yeah, >> cuz I'm not finding nothing in Orlando. >> No, it's there. >> What was the marketplace? >> Yes. >> What's the address on Ark Street? >> 8246 Arch Street. What is this? Ferguson. Off 8246 Arch Street. Off of Ferguson Ferguson. >> Well, I hate to be a pain in your butt, but that's not accurate >> because off of Ferguson is a 4,000 block of West Colonial Drive. So, if it's a street that runs east and west, it'd be 4,000. State Road 50, if you're talking like 50 in Ferguson, is about the 10,00 block north. So, it'd be seven miles north would put you in a pocket if it's 8,000 address. Or if it's 8,000 to the west, you would be out here in a CO. >> That's the address they put on. I mean, the address that's on the building, >> I've lived here for 30 years. I know how the number system works. But I' I've been here for 40. So, but I'm just saying the way the person the person that I'm even renting from is is not even a >> So, now you're renting from somebody else because you just told me you were renting this house. >> No, I'm saying to your parents different, >> but I'm talking about what I'm renting now is somebody. >> I asked you about the one on Arch Street. Yes. >> You said you were renting for $750. It's a three bedroom. My dad's name, Michael, when he's passed away. The nail in the coffin came when she gave the address of her rental property. The officer, a 30-year veteran of the area, immediately recognized that the street address she provided simply didn't exist. >> Maybe I'm crazy. Is it arch a r street? >> I thought your thumb was Do you need them looser? Do you need more space between your shoulders? I can put an extra set so you have more space between your arms. >> My hands are going numb. >> They said $28,000 was passed this morning alone out of our business account. >> I'm split. I'm freaking out. >> Okay. Well, >> so go ahead. >> Okay. Real quick, I got to ask a couple of questions that really kind of help us because what we want to do is change it from being in custody to arrest. So, real quick like this, have y'all had any checks stolen or all your checks accounted for? >> Um, I am not home right, but I have not had any checks stolen. No. >> No. And I >> What do your business checks look like? Are they like what covered are they or what they >> Okay, this is really the only thing that was different. Uh, you had green checks and I just ordered from Inuit it quickbooks and it came in the mail in a box on Monday and they're light purple. The ones we have are blue. Okay. They basically real clean and over in one the left hand side got aircraft incorporated lane Wellington Florida. Then it has regions bank 650 North Congress Avenue Delray Beach Florida. Is that your bank? Regent Bank. >> Okay. That's our bank and that is our old address over two years ago. >> Okay. >> And we had the loom. >> Okay. So, are you able to send me a picture of that? >> Yeah, I think I can. Let me Let me see if I can >> What's your husband's name or someone that signs the >> Ralph? Okay. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to send you the picture and it'll have it'll have a signature. >> Okay. Okay. >> What is her uh Is she saying anything? >> Yes, ma'am. She claims that y'all, and when I say y'all, I'm guessing it's your husband who she called her daughter. >> She basically was saying wrong. I know. And uh so basically she was saying that y'all were trying to rent a house or property from her and that this was for the property and that she was doing various things because she thought it looked suspicious for her to catch up the water >> liar. She's a she's a 100% fraud. >> We want her arrested. Okay. All right. We're working on that part. All right. >> While she continued to plead her innocence, the officer got the victim on the line. The business owner confirmed they had never heard of the woman and that the checks were an obsolete design from an old office address. >> Hey, um I just flat out asked her. I was like, "Hey, where'd you I didn't ask her if she did or not." I said, "Where'd you sign the check?" She said, "I have a counter." I was I was like, "Here?" She said, "Yeah, lady gave me a pend." I said, "I mean, not just the signature. I mean the car with her name and everything on the check." She said, "Yeah, I did have a counter, too." Okay. Well, I guess we got the >> corporate. >> Correct. Um, we got it on camera. You know, the lady all the information this and I texted her this stuff, but I haven't got an answer back yet from her. So, >> cool. >> Okay. So, this is there's that and that. And um she's obviously wondering about the other money. >> Mhm. >> So, if we come across that, so what? >> Oh, no. She gave it to the Uber driver to deliver it to her friend named John. Oh, >> okay. Okay, fair enough. Have you ever been in trouble with a law before? >> No. >> No, not at all. >> I understand. >> You did? Um, >> so never in 2015 or never in 2005, anything like that? >> No. >> No. >> The only thing I had was ticket service. >> You never got arrested before? You never been arrested before >> cuz according to this paper that you have. I mean I'm just kind of throwing it out there. So >> Oh, no. I have not been arrested. Not here in Orlando, Florida. >> Okay. Whereabouts? Whereabouts were you arrested? >> I was never arrested. I'm just saying yeah, Florida. >> Is this weird? She desperately claimed she had never been to jail and that her identity must have been hacked. The officers warned her that lying about her criminal history would only result in more charges once her fingerprints hit the system. >> What you're saying now, we can verify against because if you say you've never been arrested and that somebody was, and I'm not saying it's not happen, I'm just saying when we look up in central booking, which is where you'd have been booked in Orange County like this, and it has a picture. I'm just saying if. Okay. And it shows a picture of you and it's got your fingerprints where you were where you were booked in and it shows that you were arrested and you're telling us that you've never been arrested, then that's making false statements to law enforcement offic. So if you have, it's not hurting anything. If you've already been arrested or charged for something like this, it's if we already know that we're just trying to basically establish kind of a baseline, you know. >> Correct. this. No, no. I would know if I've been in this place. I would know. This is This is why >> I want to get away. Steven is a old roommate. He told me that part was already. As you can see, I got a lot of cards in my wallet. I have my dad's card. >> It's a lot of old things. She says it's it looks like like his signature, but she but she absolutely positively did not write the signature. So we you know we've definitely got that she did. >> Yeah. So anyway, so we got that verified on that one. Ma'am, if I can ask you a question. Um it purely up to you whether or not you want to tell me or not. Is um we we know that there's this is already being done. It's already been done this morning. It's being done currently. There's somebody that's in another location. It's being arrested as we speak by another agency. Um if you can if you want to tell me is this something like this where somebody contacted you and said hey this is what we'd like you to do and you're kind of like the lower part of it you know is that is that what happened kind of like what I said before or is it something different? No, it's a the contact through that they said it is from the marketplace. So Facebook live. >> No, no, no, no. Not the not this aircraft company. I'm talking about this what what we've got going on here. The fact that this is >> Yeah. The people. Yeah. That's how cuz of like I said I just Okay. My phone >> has been off as we speak. I got someone that actually turned my phone on for me so I can have an actual line. >> Mhm. Now, were they waiting for you to see if we showed up and then they leave without you? >> No. >> No. They kind of dropped you off then? >> No. I I used an Uber. >> Oh, so you really did use an Uber. Okay. All right. Okay. So, you really don't have any idea who the person that gave you the check was? The blind check? I'm like, it's mystery man now cuz if it ain't people that I was telling then lies all over. >> So, here I am. >> Yep. And this is how this works. I mean, that's what I was saying before this. This is how this works. And it's pretty pretty ingenious on their part, you know. >> Um because that way you're the one holding the bag like this and they're the ones that, you know, you took the risk of this and that. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> What else you need from me? >> Um just the last two minutes of conversation. Okay. All right. Come on. Hold on. >> Um, she said that her her ID her wallet is I'll just >> I just need her ID. >> Okay. Um, luckily Chambers on mine wasn't. I forgot to turn my back on one time. You can leave it on. It's fine. Um, but um what she basically said was um she through Facebook Marketplace the people threw it out there that this is what we're doing, you know, to be part of it kind of thing. Um, I asked her, "Is she getting a percentage of the check? Was she getting a flat fee per incident?" And whatever she goes, they didn't really go over that. They just said that they were going to pay her for, you know, reimburse her somehow know that she's supposed to get a part of it. They also said they reactivated her phone for her so that they could, you know, so that she could be in communication through Facebook or whatever the deal is like that. >> Eventually, the wall of lies crumbled. She admitted that a group from Facebook had reactivated her phone and provided the checks. She had been recruited as a money mule. The person sent in to take all the risk while the mastermind stayed in the shadows. >> For her role in the $28,000 scam, she was charged with fraud, forgery, and lararseny. She was sentenced to jail time, a year of probation, and a mandatory impulse control
