Part of our job as cops is discerning between who's lying and who's telling the truth. In today's videos, we're going to see a couple cases where it's not always so easy to figure out who's keeping secrets. So, are you going to tell me the truth or do I have to put you in cuffs and arrest you? First up, we have a woman who's a mom who claims her kids are abusing her, but they claim it's the other way around. >> She went to hit me and and I moved out of the way. First you figure what does she Then we'll see what happens when these two women claim innocence, but then make some really stupid decisions. >> Why do you keep lying? Yeah. Okay. But first, officers are called to a domestic incident where everybody has a different story. What happened, baby? Watch out. Hi. Hi. Dogs on calls. Sucks. I've been bit by a dog in a call and ever since then, not a big fan. What's going on? Oh my god, are you my mom? Um I need something to drink. Okay. I've been fighting my husband for two 3 years. Okay. Can I get Long time to be fighting. I can't really talk. My nerves are shot. I have I think I have a water bottle. Uh-huh. Um I don't know where to start. From the beginning? It's too long of a story. So, my husband's been cheating with my old friend. So, today, let's go on what happened today. >> 5 years. This is so common in like domestic situations. They always start like 20 years ago and it's like, we can only really deal with what happened on that day. So, it's a constant struggle when you're interviewing to bring them back to the present moment. He bought her a house and he stays here so that I don't know about the house and take it in the divorce. He's paid my my and everyone off to be mean to me so I will move out and I'm hardly ever home. I've been an addict. I went to rehab. I've been sober 2 years and I just started again. So, I'm in AA, but point is, every time I come back home, my husband is fine. It's okay. Be fine. And then when he's not here, they all jump on me. And I can't take it no more. Anyway, what happened was um I went downstairs and asked Brooke if she has been throwing my stuff away cuz she took the clothes from downstairs in the basement >> Okay. and put them in the hallway right in front of my door. Okay. And um so it's just, you know, it's simple things like that. Was it Was there anything physical between you and her? Yes. I I She kept getting closer to me and closer to me. And like um so, she went to hit me and and I moved out of the way. And then she pulled my hair and pulled me down, so I grabbed her hair back. Okay. Um I don't know if there's anything in my face, but then she called for my son, Justice, and he he he's been emotionally abusing me for the last 3 years or 2, more so 2 years. And um he came downstairs and grabbed me by my my throat and threw me against the wall. Okay. These are serious allegations here. They're in the basement. That's my husband. He'll tell you all kinds of bad stuff about me. Okay. But he's the culprit. Oh, boy. Now, this started cuz she stole my stuff away and I She told me I need to get out of my own house. And then I'll say something to my husband about it. I'll say, "I don't know what you do to your stuff." And my stuff's disappearing. So, it sounds like she's been treated unfairly and horribly abused. But, let's see what everybody else has to say. And honestly, I tried to move out because of the emotional abuse and um >> just got here. Uh she's saying that son and uh And Brooke. in-law, they're in the basement, but they speak dogs over there. I haven't spoken spoken to them yet. Okay. But my son coming down there putting his hands on me again for the last time, I've had enough. He pulled a gun on me last month. He's been bullying me and emotionally abusing me for the last 2 years. You think you might call the police if someone pulled a gun on you? If that's true. Do you have any injuries? Scratches? On my heart. Yeah, I don't think so. Did he bring a broom out? Yeah, we're going to try and talk to both of them as well. Just get We're trying to get a story from everyone. >> Talk to all the parties. That's fine. As equal and fair as possible. Can I help you guys? I would like to talk to her as well. Okay. She's an adult right? Yes. >> Okay. So She's still on my dog. Adult. You guys can just stay in the car so I can talk with both of them. I didn't talk to her. I didn't. Okay. No. She's an adult right? Yes, talk to her. Come on. So he's going to talk to her alone. A lot of times if you let other people be with someone when they're interviewed, there's coaching, they answer for them cuz they see that maybe they've been in a traumatic situation or they can't answer for themselves right away. People jump in and you need a statement from the person to go in your report. I have a bunny and my bunny rabbit. >> I have a bunny. Money? Uh no, bunny. Like a bunny rabbit. Like a Yeah. And I was cleaning her cage. And she throws all of my father-in-law's clothes down on the stairs where it's unsafe for me and my dogs to trip over it. So I picked it up and I threw it in the hallway so that nobody's tripping over it. Okay. >> She's Well, she's on meth. She's So meth, drug of paranoia and delusion. We know that. She's in and out of this house so much. She goes to her dealer's house, stays for 3 days there and then comes back, sleeps it off. Goes to her dealer's house. Well, I don't know where she goes. Ask her about it. She comes down and she's like, "Get in my face." Please. I just I had a really rough day. Please. Just get away from me. Like I'm trying to deal with you today. Normally I can just walk past her. No more her. And like no issue. And today she came in my face and she's like right here at me. And I was like, "Please. Like "Hey, Can you hold it for me for a second?" Mhm. So, I was like he's going to walk away from me. I pushed her hand back and she didn't like that. So, it was like what? So, what's going on there? What I really don't know. So, basically all I'm getting ready to go to her house, which is my sister-in-law dating my twin brother. That's a beard right there. went downstairs and my brother downstairs. She obviously probably thought I was on drugs. This is her preferred. It's like a Mennonite. Go delusional. Kind of flip out randomly, accuse everybody of everything. Um And she's really she's So, we've been trying to get her out. She's put hands on me multiple times. Called I I understand there's a lot of history here. I'm just worried about today cuz I can't do anything about the history stuff. So, today I really don't know. All I heard was Brooke, which is Who's Brooke again? Uh my sister-in-law. Uh screaming my name for help. I go down and she's got her like pounding by her hair and My mom, Michelle, has Brooke pounding on her head. Rough stuff, man. She's got a busted lip and she's And I'm looking and I go down. So, all I do I grab her arms and I kind of like just push them down. So, that way she kind of just like separates them. >> Yeah. She falls, trips over the broom and dustpan or whatever is back there. And then from there I told Brooke I was like, "Come on, let's go upstairs, you know, go in the back stand for a couple minutes, relax, calm down." That's when she called the cops. Okay. She like, "Have you right here first." Which he did. Really even sting. It was like her finger. She was like and it was nothing. So, I like pushed her back and then she started coming at me. And so I like I would push her away. And so like I pushed her on the wall. And I had her pinned on the wall. "Stop." And she just keeps like I think she hit me with her ring. But and then I started calling for my brother-in-law. I was like, "Justice. Justice." Cuz I was scared. And What? And he came down and he like got her off of me and he was like go upstairs go upstairs. So I started going upstairs and he like got her off of me and pushed her down. And she was just sitting there and then he walked away. So like This girl she She's a mess. She be calling all the time. Ooh. We don't We don't pick the parents we have, right? No. I feel so bad for him and his twin. Aw. You see Brooke with any of your like pulling your mom's hair or anything or is it No, Brooke was trying to defend herself. She She's so little she couldn't do nothing. I literally she's like scrounged down getting ready to get pulled to the ground. So what kind of history is there between >> She's a meth head. Okay. What? That's what he was saying. I didn't really I don't I don't want to say but if they're both involved in a fight I can't really trust either party to say >> No, she's a meth head and she uh I I kicked her out a while ago. Okay. She had place to live last place she lived. [ __ ] Do you want me to get some help? She got cuz she's off tweaked out and [ __ ] >> You know what I mean? >> Mhm. And I just took her back cuz she's a boy's mommy. That's all I got. No problem. Tried to tell her to go to rehab or [ __ ] like that, you know. >> Mhm. Sounds like what they need to do is get a court order. Where I work you can go to court and petition a judge a family member or a police officer and the judge will remand somebody or order somebody to rehab. At this point this is what that lady needs. She won't do it. She thinks everybody in the world's against her and [ __ ] Okay. You would get probably as much as I do with her. She's crazy some of the You know what I mean? No, I get The kids They're good kids, they She lives down in the basement with my son and [ __ ] like that, you know. Okay. Part time and stuff. And like I said I just let her in and she said she was going to go to rehab in a couple of days. And now she starts this stupid [ __ ] Um can you little things like this, like take my stuff and she smashed this on on the sidewalk and stepped on it and break it. They do little things like this to me. Do you have a a smartphone, ma'am? I don't. Okay. Do you have a Do >> A smartphone that's like a It has a camera? Yes. Okay. So, start recording the stuff when this happens. Okay? Cuz right >> stuff recorded. >> Right now it's just a Right now it's Yeah. He says he said we have no evidence that really Yeah. >> goes either way on who actually started it. So, if you guys get into an altercation, before it even starts, start recording. >> knew I didn't even know it was going to happen. I know. But listen, if you guys can't be civil towards each other, maybe it's time to pull out the camera anytime you're around each other. It's so bizarre to me that that's where we are in the world and it's true that everybody records each other now. It's such good evidence for the police when we show up to have video evidence that this cop's actually telling them just record each other all the time. >> [music] >> So, you're married to not him, but his twin brother. Correct? Not married, dating. We've been dating for 5 years, so close. Okay, he said sister-in-law, so Yeah, we just consider each other brother and sister, yeah. Okay. That changes things cuz now it went from a domestic to a assault. >> She doesn't live over here, but she also has a little cup over here. She She didn't like that I pushed her her finger away, so she smacked me cuz she said >> That was right after you pushing her finger away. She like I pushed her finger away, then she I'm like All right. So, here's the conclusion that we got, okay? You have no marks, no injuries, and no marks. She does have it. That's not true. Right now I just need you to put your hands behind your back. Oh my god, that's not true. THAT'S NOT TRUE. SO, interesting assault and battery is treated differently in different states. Where I work, police can't make an arrest on assault battery unless it's in our presence unless it's domestic or there's serious bodily injury. In this case, neither would fit, so we'd actually have to just issue a complaint. In Ohio, assault battery is arrestable if they get the evidence for it, and that's what we're seeing. Why did you lie? You can see the mark on her lip. There's no lying spot on a mark on someone's lip. I didn't touch her lip. In attempt to deceive ME. THAT'S NOT TRUE. YOU'RE LYING. She pulled my hair and [crying] choked me. What are YOU TALKING ABOUT? MY SON DID TOO. You You did the same thing, right? I did not. PLEASE. OH MY GOD. NOW they're going TO PUT A RESTRAINING ORDER ON ME. NOW I WON'T HAVE A HOME. That's what they're doing this for. OH MY GOD. NO. OH, MAN. She needs some help. Oh. Maybe this can be rock bottom for Have a seat. This is what they've been planning for a long time. But they just couldn't do it. Well, why do you have a handcuff key on your Cuz you used to have a pair of handcuffs? Look at that key chain. Depending on Depending on what >> Handcuff you go to, if you try to conceal a handcuff key I didn't steal the charge. >> Some agencies consider that possession of criminal tools. I didn't. Uh sorry about this, boys. Yeah, no no problem. I'm sorry this is happening to you guys. This is This is paperwork for us. This is Your guys' is fine, so Yeah. Yeah. Good point. We'll see what happens to Michelle when it comes to court in just a moment. But first, officers pull over this vehicle, and both the operator and the passenger seem to be on edge. Hello. Hi. How you doing? I'm Sergeant Sebastian with the Akron Police Department. How are you? I'm good. How are you? Pretty good. Are you the registered owner of the car? Yes. Do you have a valid driver's license? Yes, I Yes, I do, but it's not on me. Okay. You might just sit back down in your car there for me and we'll kind of get it figured out. Are you miss Jayla? Yes. You know you don't have a valid license here? Yes. I was taking I was taking my cousin down the street. I don't know how to drive. >> dangerous tune now. >> driver's license on you, dear? You got any info on you? On my car? No, on you. Like a driver's license, ID card, anything? No. You good? Where you coming from? What's that? From my mom's. I need to go home. From your mom's house? Yeah? Where does your mom live at? What's that? Around the corner. Don't scare me. I'm sorry. >> You don't have to be scared. I don't like this. I'm sorry. Hey, listen, as long as you ain't got nothing crazy, a murder warrant, you have any firearms in the car, drugs, anything else like that, then I promise you you're going to be out of here in no time, okay? We're all just the same unit, dear. I promise you. I promise you, like I said, He's being very sweet to her. >> nothing crazy, then you're going to be out of here. I promise you. Cuz you don't have a valid license. We run your tag, you're coming back not a valid driver. That's fine. I got I got my temps, but I got to I got to take my driver's test, honestly. How old are you? 20. 20? Pretty crazy, like car registered to her, it sounds like, doesn't have a license, and sounds like she's just been driving around like quite a bit, and finally got caught. I'm coming from my cousin's house right around the corner. I stay down the street. Is this your cousin? Yeah. That's where you picked her up from? >> Yeah. Like the officer was saying, we all work together. Um there's no guns or drugs or anything in the vehicle we need to look at. Yeah, if you wouldn't mind. Just do me a favor and step out. Technically, since you've already verbally told us you don't have a driver's license, we can detain you, but you're being cooperative, so we're not going to do that today. Okay? I'm stepping out the car. Listen, you're lying to me. Stepped out the car. Why you lying? We're trying to get you out of here as soon as possible. You don't have to lie to us. So, are you going to tell me the truth, or do I have to put you in cuffs and to you? No, you don't. All right, so I already told you that's my name. If you got some petty warrant, I don't care about. Who's this with you? They a valid driver? No. No. Have you ever had a license, hon? No, I'm I'm a new driver, man. Okay. Not a new license driver, just a new driver. That's where you're going or you're taking her there? Okay. Okay. Why would you say you're 20 if you're only 17? How we got here with the passenger isn't exactly clear. Usually, if you stop the operator of a vehicle and they have passengers, they can deny giving their ID to you if you ask. So, they don't have to identify themselves, but if they do agree to identify themselves to you and they give you bad information, then there's a problem. So, we don't know how we got to this point with this passenger, but here we are. There's something that you need to be 20 for? When he comes back over here, tell him this is a terrible driver. He could have easily gotten around him and took off if you wanted to. For real. When he comes back over here. Just do that. Do it for me, please. It'll it'll amuse me. All right. Do this for my amusement. A little weird. Hey, were you ever on Louisiana? Louisiana? Ever have police contact on the street of Louisiana? Don't know where that is. What are you asking now? Cuz I'm making sure you're you are who you say you are. When did you get your ID? Were you pregnant? Have a kid? No. Did you have a kid? Yes. And when you had your ID when did you get your ID picture taken? Your ID picture don't that you gave us don't look like you. But, roll. >> the last time you got a driver's license? I've never had a driver's license. Never had one? Said no, you're lying. Oh, well. Have you ever got an ID then? Why you keep lying? What What What was the Oh, there she goes. Oh, man. Come back over here for me. Come here. Come here. Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your back. Don't make it worse. Don't make it worse. >> Stop. Just relax. Relax. Are you Are you a missing person or something? Okay. Why'd you do all that? Okay. Well, you just made things a lot worse for you. Why would you make us do that? Huh? Come on. Have a seat. No, sorry doesn't cut it. You know the relationship between the police and the community out here ain't great. And you out and doing stupid stuff like that? Cousin? All right, listen. It's water under the bridge right now. Are you okay? It's water under the bridge right now, okay? We need to re- That means I'm not going to be mad at you for right now. Okay, you made a dumb mistake. Hopefully, you just learn from that lesson. All right? All because you're a missing person. Yeah? She didn't report me yet, though. Okay. So, what are you so concerned about? Who are you, actually? That's my name. You could say that. >> Okay, yeah. You're not You're not coming up as a missing person. Cuz she didn't call y'all. I just got into >> Then you would Listen. Then you Listen. Then you Miss Summers, listen. Then you would have been out of here. If you're not labeled as a missing person, we don't do anything. I didn't know that. I just got into it with my mom. I'm just >> Okay, something's not adding up here, right? If there's concerns about you and your mom, there's stuff that we can do to help with that. But running from the police like you just did, that's That's not good. What Why Why do you run? I don't know. >> I still don't think that's her. You obviously know who she is, and you're refusing to tell us. >> refusing. We've asked you how many times? If anything, you're probably going to help her. >> Can y'all grab my phone? Or what's We'll do it ourselves. And they can fingerprint you. They'll find out who you are. Are you >> you to the detention, they fingerprint you, you're going to come up as We could just Or we could just go to my mom's. I could take you around the corner and she could do it. Well, it doesn't seem like you want to go to your mom's. I do. We can go there. I can take you there. I promise you. I'll take you there. I got a baby, a little baby. If I go to jail, I don't know what the happen. My mom work all day, every day. I'm sorry that I ran, but really, honestly, that's why I ran because I got a baby. I'm thinking nothing about but my kid. Okay. I can't. Well, listen, all that stuff could be sorted out with us. And plus, if you came up as a missing person, we just take you home. We We don't take you to jail for that. We just take you home. I'm going to I'm going to call EMS to take a look at you, okay? We have to. Well, I understand, but we have to do it. Just so when they show up here, you're not freaked out. >> that? I did. You Yeah, I wasn't going to push you down or nothing. >> [laughter] >> Oftentimes in these videos, we see them the EMS coming and it's like for no reason. But in this case, there was a pretty good use of force. She got slammed against that car pretty hard, so they're definitely going to see why here and call EMS for her to get checked out. Miss What? I don't want your phone in my face. No. Listen, I need to take a picture of you. We got to identify you. I don't care. Crazy. I don't want that phone in my face. You already got all these cameras in my face. Move. Does not want to be identified. Why? And I can too. So what? Why can't we just work together? >> I don't want your phone in my face. You already got all these cameras in my face. Leave it alone. Well, I'll just use your picture from the camera. What What is going on? Why are you being like that? We're being like this because you ran. That's the sir. I found her. Elena. She's got a warrant. Contempt of court. >> No way. And she's 22, so she's going to county today. I'll start her care. She's got a warrant for improper discharge. Attempt to court improper discharge. That's all. >> Wow. I'm assuming that's improper discharge of a firearm, so that's >> [music] >> I didn't expect that. Improper discharge? 2021. It's 2026 legal. Oh God, you're not taking me. It's 10:29. Finally, 7 minutes. Yeah. Finally, cuz I got a great support system. Oh my God, I don't know what Now we get to enjoy truly how she behaves. Before it was a little bit of an act, now we're going to get a taste of what she really thinks. You want to search the car? >> to our stupid ass white people. I got a great ass support system. Dumb ass. What's wrong with you? I spit on everybody in this Don't do that, please. Don't ever [ __ ] disrespect me. Ass. Miss Diamond. No, I don't give a [ __ ] about none of that. Ass. Don't call your all dumb ass white people. My kids will never go to talk. >> I'm not >> Evil ass people. I'm not white, I'm black, biracial. >> ain't talking to you then. All right, Lieutenant Sensley, it is 5:02. I'm at the exchange in Dodge at the Gas and Save. What's your name, ma'am? What is it? What is this a recording? It's just a recording cuz I'm interviewing about what happened out here. Did you see what happened between the officers and the passenger from your your vehicle? Seems like he's here to investigate the use of force just to make sure everything's on the up and up in case complaints come in later. What happened? She tried to run. She tried to run, do you know why? I'm not about to be in court for that. No, I don't know why. So, what happened when she tried to run? Did they tackle her? Did they throw her to the ground? Did they use any force or strikes on her? Why was the ambulance here? Did they? Well, we just like to get people checked out anytime you saw it. Like that dent in the car, I want to make sure it wasn't injuring her. >> to put that camera in my face? That's rude. Like I don't like that. Are you a valid driver? Of course not. They just gave me a ticket. Okay. Is that your vehicle? In your name? Okay. Ma'am, what's your name? What the I got to interview about what happened. What is your name? >> No, I'm not no [ __ ] I'm what? This is not no [ __ ] interview. What y'all trying to put me on YouTube or something, bro? Watch out, bro. This is for our body worn camera, ma'am. >> y'all got one of them cameras. Move out OF MY FACE. NO. Did the No, no [ __ ] interview, bro. What the Did the damage to the vehicle the cruiser, do you remember how that happened? How the [ __ ] Did I damage He slammed me into it. I didn't go into the cruiser. Okay. Well, why did that happen? >> The Cuz I ran. I tried to run. >> you try to run? >> run cuz I got warrants. You know why I try to run, bro. Get out of my face. There you go. Got what you needed. Alongside her existing warrant, Alana was charged with obstructing official business and misrepresenting her identity. Only the obstructing charge stuck and she was sentenced to 90 days in jail, but this was a suspended sentence, so she only served two days. I can't see for certain, but with no booking record, it looks like the driver was released on the scene. Michelle was charged with assault. She later played guilty and was sentenced to 180 days in jail with 170 suspended, meaning she served about 10 days and must complete a treatment program while serving 1 year's probation.
