[music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Welcome back to the channel, everyone. We're just two cops breaking down your favorite body cams. Kyle, what do we have now? >> This video is coming from Midwest Safety and it's called SWAT team plays Rainbow Six Siege in real life. We haven't seen it. Let's watch it. >> On August 1st, 2024, Columbus police in Ohio responded to a disturbance at a home involving 40-year-old Benjamin Wheeler. According to the caller, Wheeler was irate and threatening family members. When officers first made contact, Wheeler briefly stepped into the doorway shirtless and made a series of erratic statements, at one point stating, "Marshall law has been declared." After several minutes of conversation, he told officers he had weapons in his room, saying, "I'm armed. I will defend myself." Moments later, Wheeler retreated back inside and stopped responding. With an active felony warrant to serve and growing concerns about a gunman now barricaded inside his home, the department requested its SWAT team, who arrived with a heavily armored military-grade vehicle known as the BearCat, built to withstand gunfire from rifle rounds and breach fortified structures. Its arrival marked a turning point in the standoff, and this was only the beginning. >> All right. >> Okay, 60 copy. And I'm a tape. >> Window left the door he was last seen. >> That's a small little house. >> BearCat two and some more personnel before we start announcements. >> Good. >> Yep. >> Moving. >> Thank you, sir. >> Yep, it's on the left. >> Thank you. >> You guys got an AR gun spun up? >> Yeah. >> All right. >> Benjamin or anyone else inside of 818 Terry Berry, please come to the front door with nothing in your hands so we can speak with you. >> I have a taser. >> Taser. >> I don't Have you guys had contact with him at all? >> Yeah, nothing. >> Didn't think he's going to be on Midwest safety. >> No. >> the door. >> We've seen nothing through nothing. >> Do we know Do we know if he has a phone so we can get that over with quickly and then we can just go ahead and go to Armageddon? >> Let me send you guys up. >> Yep. Stay right here. >> Yeah. >> You can look in that window, too, if you see him. >> I need you to come to this window in the front. >> The one you were at earlier. Just open it. You talked to us or come to the front door with nothing in your hands. We want to explain everything that's going on here. That's very helpful to you. You have a warrant for your arrest. You cannot leave until your statement is taken into custody. >> If we have to make entry, I'll have you go straight. I'll have you turn. You'll turn here so you're not exposed and then I'll I'll go You block here and I'll go along. >> I'm You got something to say already? >> No, I just don't know why they're talking about them making entry, but go ahead. >> Yeah, it is pretty early and I think it's interesting the way they set their Bearcats up because they mentioned earlier, which the whole point of the Bearcat is to provide as much cover for the officers as you possibly can, but in these situations both of them are pointed directly at the house, which only leaves the back of the Bearcat for the cover for the officers. And if you see, the negotiator shows up and then he has to go to the other Bearcat. There's quite a distance between and they're just kind of people casually walking through and and even a canine's kind of out in the middle. I'd like to see the Bearcats positioned at least sideways, but the first Bearcat makes sense because you have that big ram on the front positioned to at the door should they need to push and open that, they can actually do that. But, positioning them directly straight on, you're getting minimal coverage for the officers in the back. >> We're out here and we're very worried about you. >> They're going to be pissed when we blow the windows out. >> Benjamin, I'm Adams with your mom and dad, and your mom says you need to get back and we get some medicine, but she can't do that till you come out. >> Contact? >> Contact. >> Yeah, right here, this window. >> All right. So, we're just going to change the plans. When we go up, we'll go up Two of us will go up this uh side of the Bearcat. You go up here and bunker this window. I need to go up and get that window. >> a long gun over there. >> Moving. >> So, I mean, he says he's armed and he's willing to shoot it out with them. I don't know why we we'd want to approach him on that. Not sure what they're doing. >> Locked. >> What was that? >> That was just me. It's locked. They were just checking to see if it was open. >> I don't know what's the point of checking to see if it's open. You just blow the door off the hinges. >> I guess we could have left the the screen >> Yeah, that's a a really good point. You you have somebody that's inside that says that they're armed. You need to take the situation like they are. You have two Bearcats out there, an entire SWAT team with a canine and a negotiator. You have the ability to move that Bearcat up or use that push bumper if they want to actually force the door open. I'm not actually sure why you would go up to test to see if a door is open because at this point, if you're opening the door, you're already making an entry into the home. So, >> You're exposing yourselves, for sure. >> Yeah, all or nothing, and that that's pretty sketchy. >> We're open for him to breach it. Man, I missed that thing by >> You like to put a piece of paper there. Benjamin, I gave you a little break, but it's time for you to come out now. >> Breach it. Throw everything in. So, make no announcements when I go up when we go up and throw stuff in. >> No. >> Okay, good. We'll have Once we get back, we'll have her make the announcements. Hey, we put a put a throw phone in. >> On my phone. >> I'm moving. >> Breaching. Breaching. >> Hey, let me see your hands. Leave it there. Come out. Come out. >> He's trying to close the door again. I'm leaving the ram in there. >> Benjamin, come on out here. >> I'm moving. Moving. >> Benjamin, come on. Benjamin. >> Hey, that's perfect. >> Larry, you want to get some announcements in? >> Announcements? >> Yeah, I mean, you can turn the wheel and you can back up with that and rip the door off completely. >> Anybody see that spotlight? >> that spotlight. He just went to the left, Rob. >> Which way did he go? >> Spotlight. Where you at, Rob? >> I got it. >> Got him. >> No one's here to hurt you. That's not going to work. Bang. Bang. Bang. Show us your hands and we'll walk out, buddy. >> He is trying to push furniture. >> Bang. >> He's trying the front door. We've got visual. >> Slow it down, bud. >> He's trying to open the ball cap. >> Open the front door, bud. Come on, little buddy. Come on. Come on in. >> Oh, he's got a gun. He's got a gun. Back up. Back up. Where's he at? Where's he at? >> Go lower. Go lower. Go lower. Go lower. >> He's got a knife. What was that? What was that? What was that? >> All right. >> Back up. BACK UP. >> BACK UP. BACK UP. BACK UP. >> BACK UP. >> COME BACK. >> SHOOT THAT ONE. >> HE'S GOT A THROWING KNIFE. >> He's in the kitchen >> Deep in the kitchen. Coming to the front door with a knife. Come >> So, I'm not going to go long-winded on this. It just It It doesn't make a lot of sense to move an entire team up to that front doorway. You have a super small structure, multiple windows, you had a gaggle of SWAT guys up there. You're just exposing yourselves. One guy said he was armed. That you're just putting the team in a dangerous spot. We would deploy gas in that residence to force him to come out. There's just a lot of other options that you would use rather than pushing a team into that structure without utilizing some other type of technique to force that person out. So, let's keep watching and see how it goes, but they've now approached twice and have had to back out. >> And that officer was actually injured. >> Drop the knife. >> Drop the knife. Drop the knife, Ben. Ben. >> Wow, I cracked the windshield. That [laughter] cracked the Stop a bullet and cracked a windshield. That's crazy. >> Ben, stop throwing things, Benjamin. Benjamin. >> Or deploy the K9. Like when he exposes himself out of the threshold of the doorway, they could deploy a dog at that point. >> Benjamin. >> We're hitting knockers in that window. >> Benjamin, how about gas? >> Knockers. Let's knock at the >> Benjamin, please come out. >> Let's knock at the windows. >> Or 40 mm. >> Benjamin, please come out. Do it now. >> What I don't like about this though is those Bearcats are so close to the house and that one is moved up and they're they haven't tried to rip the door off. So, you have very little distance between the suspect and where the officers are. You don't have a lot of ability to actually control that suspect if he comes out and he can make quick movement to them, which is probably going to force a shooting. I'd like to see those Bearcats move back, rip the door off by turning the wheel and yanking that thing forward, rip the door out, have it open, give yourself some space, and you have a little bit of time. You have an entire SWAT team out there. See where it goes. Okay, so they are deploying gas. >> knife in his hand. He's standing deep in the >> Already shattered through that window. >> Ben, drop the knife. Benjamin, please come >> Let's go this side. >> Oh my god, how are we supposed to get up there, Ben? Well, >> Let's go on the inside here. Inside, inside, inside, inside door. >> Inside. >> Watch that taser. >> We're good. We're good. We're good. We're good. >> Ben, get down. >> All right, go lower. Go lower. All right, you're good. >> You need to walk out of the house slowly. No one's here to hurt you. >> Three three side knockers, knockers, knockers. >> Ben, right now he's probably so paranoid. >> Mhm. >> I can't believe he broke the windshield with a knife. >> With a knife. >> We can't either. >> Did you see it, Sean? >> Yeah. >> But you can feel it's that second layer, but >> that happen, though. >> It turned >> It's supposed to take 50 cal rounds. >> You throw knockers on those windows, we'll go up and throw a tri-chamber. >> So those are knockers, I guess, not not glass. >> Let's do it. Let's do it right there. >> All right, we'll check these and just go back here. >> You guys ready? >> Man, they're pushing again. I just >> One more, one more, one more, one more, one more. >> What are we doing? >> I don't know. >> Move. Move. >> [music] >> So if you're going to deploy gas into a house, you start at the top down back to the front and you drive them out towards you. Here they're throwing it in the front door. We don't know what the inside of the house looks like. You could potentially be deploying gas in the front and driving him further away from you. I I I'm confused on the tactics that these officers are using right here. >> Yeah, and real quick, like just for the general public, every time you're escalating your use of force, you're you're doing just that. So, you know, you try negotiations and then you break some windows out and then it may get to a point where that now where it's like time to deploy gas, but each one of those things is a different level of use of force. Um and if you are going to deploy gas, you have to you should have your gas mask donned before you're doing it. These guys are It looked like they were throwing CS or gas into the house by hand, and then now they're saying put your mask on. So, a little bit backwards. Um not sure yeah, like you said the the tactics on this, but we're not there, so let's just keep watching and and see how this goes. But, um yeah, a lot of uh questions. >> [laughter] >> Gas mask was all the way back to mask up. >> Gas deployed. Gas deployed. >> So, yeah, you would want to be already masked up. Oh, yeah. >> What if it was California guys now? >> Uh yeah, just >> I'm going to predict that they're going to go in. >> Are they ready if he comes out? >> I don't think so. They're all over the place. Dog's ready. >> And by breaking those windows, out there ventilating the house for the gas to exit. So, I mean that's also kind of cowardly, too. >> some more now to encourage the surrender. >> The dog's I got four minutes down here and we need some fresh air. Hold the water. I need you to the front door. >> I can see what they're throwing. >> Well, as soon as you said lower, I lowered and that's when it came across. >> Yeah. >> I got Someone yelled gun. >> Just so much exposure of these officers cuz the BearCat positioning. >> Oh, it looked like a gun, yes. I got I got it. >> Okay, so you have an officer that's saying he saw what he thought was a gun. The officer communicated that he saw a gun. These officers are so close to that house and the positioning the BearCats, they're all doing something. It's just It's just hard to watch. >> Can we get a taser on him, Rob? >> Let's gas him again. We're already having trouble. Let's put two more in there. >> Yeah, do. >> Sunset now. >> Oh, can you get in there? It's 45 minutes from the last cord. >> I'm going to go over your thing. Oh, that's a great toss. >> Two. >> Oh, he threw it back out. He threw it back out. He is hunkered down in the kitchen on the kitchen floor. >> But he threw it out. >> maybe it's time to administer some hot gas and see how he likes that. Yeah. >> Gas gun. Gas gun. Turn this off. >> This is a good deployment, but not in the front door. Do that in the room to drive him out. >> Hold on. I'll throw another one. I just got to get my mask on now. >> 42 to sniper, you're going to have a some personnel crossing over for a minute. Stand by on the long gun. >> Hey Rob. How How deep is he when he's starting that back? >> He's all the way in the back. >> Yeah, he's by the >> He's laying in the He's laying in the kitchen by the stove. >> He may have been in the kitchen at one point, but he They have to take into consideration, too, like people do move, bounce around, right? Points of the room, points of the room. So, he may not be in the kitchen anymore when they now make their what? Tactical approach? So, I I wouldn't take that with a grain of salt. Could be anywhere. >> They're waiting for him to come out. That's a Hey, get ready. He's probably going to come out on that one. >> Benjamin, we're still here. We've asked you to come out peacefully. I'm going to ask again. Step out of that door with nothing in your hand. Any way this ends is with you in custody. >> He just threw something. >> Put it down with the knocker gun. >> Right here. Go through the back door outside. Go go go there. All right, come over here. There you go. You got a better angle? Down on your knees. >> Let me out. >> You need to exit the house. >> yelled that he's not coming out. >> Come to the door with nothing in your hand. You cannot continue to throw stuff at us. >> Get a rooker and flip >> that off. Oh, yeah, that thing is tiny. >> Hey, when this when this gas clears out, I can clear that out that door and that with the ram. Huh? As long as he doesn't throw another Yankee candle at you. >> The gas is not driving anymore. We're going to have to go in and get him. >> Yes, so let's get a plan together and then we'll go. >> Let's rip that door off. Give it a couple minutes to clear up a little bit, we go in. >> We're going to go bunker bunker bunker. >> He can close with a knife. >> And then somebody's got to be on the taser unless you're going to shoot him. >> Yeah. >> I mean, I have seen people withstand a lot of gas. >> I'm just saying. >> Yeah, this guy is determined. >> If we got distance and >> We got >> Can't go in there with that mindset though. Let him know what we're doing so there's no miscommunication. >> got to change our tactics up a little bit without having to go in. >> On your call, we're going to we're going to go in and get it. >> After more than 2 hours of negotiation attempts and with the gas finally clearing, officers knew the standoff couldn't drag on much longer. Wheeler had piled debris behind the open front door, blocking any direct entry, and SWAT needed a clear path inside before committing to a final push. With visibility returning, they began preparing the tools and tactics they hoped would finally bring this standoff to [music] an end. >> Worst case scenario, I'm going to I'm going to just clear out some of the stuff he's trying to >> Use that to drag stuff out and push it around. >> Prepare for entry in the drone. >> Okay, then if he comes out onto this porch, we're just going to let him stay out there and then entry can move up to the door and then we can deal with him just in this porch, so. >> That door is backed up. >> Coming back. I'm working on the door for you. >> All right, we can keep him moving back here on the kitchen in the kitchen maybe, moving towards the uh porch side. >> Maybe. >> Bring the ram to the I got it. It's off the hinges. >> It's off the >> I seen the middle hinge come off. I can see the >> That might be about as clear as I can get. >> I can see through the stove. >> Just get me that chair. >> Yep. Can you lift that or not? Or is that going to fall? >> I mean, that's a small house, man. I I if I had to rip those front wall panels off that thing, then I'm not going to go in there with a dude that's already armed and said he's going to shoot it out with me. >> Please, you need to tell him now that he needs to surrender. Anything that happens from this point on is going to be of his doing. >> Benjamin, this is Columbus Police. We're outside of 818. We do have a warrant for your arrest. >> Yeah, we're waiting for you to end this coming out peacefully and we will serve the warrant. >> Yeah, Bearcat 140, we had no reaction from the one side when I was moving his furniture around. Okay, we thought we saw some shadows moving back in the kitchen. Do you have eyes on that? >> I'm not sure. >> All right, so he's still active. They've made announcements, they've tried to breach the door, they've made movements up to the front door multiple times. He's thrown stuff out and officer was actually cut with a knife. They've deployed gas, what they called a shitload of gas, and he's still not coming out. This person is determined, like you said, it's not a very big house, but you need to change your tactics and start reevaluating exactly what you're doing. It's possible that the person could be under the influence of something or incredibly high. So, time is on your side at this point. You let them calm down a little bit and start to reassess what you actually have. I don't like the fact that they're planning on making entry. Send a drone in see and try to evaluate everything, but I would not be making entry on that when you have an officer that's seen a gun. >> They may they probably don't have a drone, I would imagine. Um otherwise, I think we would have seen one, but there's no rush in this situation right now. So, again, let's just see what happens. Uh see if they can get Ben out of the house peacefully. >> And I straight back into the kitchen, but then the living room wall jets out a mountain 4 ft. So, it obstructs my view over to where you guys can see that porch. >> Speaking of the devil. >> I got a drone. >> Well, why wasn't that there a lot sooner? [laughter] >> All right, bro bro. Go get some. >> Front door? >> Front door. >> He's going to be ready to jump at that kitchen and start swinging at it. >> Well, we we have we have a second one coming. So, if he knocks it down, >> Second one's right behind >> Yep. >> You mean outside agency? >> Yeah, I mean still should have been there a long time ago. >> Those drone guys >> I love that. >> Yeah, yeah. That's why I said get some. >> Where do you think he's going? He's probably your left. Right there in that kitchen area right there. Oh, there's a lot of sh- our way getting to the kitchen, guys. >> Okay, he's down to the bedrooms to the left. >> Okay, he's in the kitchen. There he is. There There he is. >> Kitchen. >> Barricaded or what? >> No, he's just in the kitchen. >> Nope. Nope. Don't pin him in the kitchen. >> He just hit it. >> He hit it. >> He's in the kitchen. >> All right, barricade him with a That's what we can tell. He's in that 3/4 kitchen laying on the floor. I believe he took the drone out with him. >> There he goes. He just went to the left. To the two side. He went to the two. >> Okay, he's moving. >> Here he comes with the chair. >> to barricade. He's throwing more furniture in front of the kitchen entrance. He's floor. Yeah, and right in the >> So, you know he's at the back of the house. So, maybe target the back of the residence with the with the other Bearcat. It looks like there was room to come around, but you need to start forcing that guy out that front. >> Yeah. >> It's a good view. And again. >> He's going to go to the >> It's not bad. You can navigate that. It sucks, but you can navigate that. >> Let's go. >> You didn't see him? >> I thought there was a sniper. We got to come over to this side to make entry. All right, he's throwing stuff at the drone back in that towards the kitchen there. >> Let's go. Let's go. >> Freeze. >> Real quick, like number one, that's a lot of personnel to be going into that small structure. I think they should have hand selected a smaller team to make entry, but number two, you have a canine there on scene. At least they did. If I'm going to make entry into that, you know he doesn't at least have a gun or knife in his hand at that current moment. Send the dog in there first to apprehend that guy. Like you shouldn't be It's, you know, pause before boots. You shouldn't be going in there as a team if you are going to make entry without sending the canine in first. So, >> And you can hear them saying go go go go, which what that does to other officers in front is it stresses you out, it makes you move quicker, not a controlled pace. I've never liked when they say go go go. Take it slow. >> Let's see what happens. It's come down to this now. >> [music] >> Freeze. >> He's committed at this point. He's in the fourth gear. I just hope he's not around that corner with a gun just ready to ambush him cuz he can't see. This is Oh, like he just took the gun out. He's calling the police now. Oh [ __ ] he's ripping the shirt off him. [ __ ] my life. Oh [ __ ] He just said Yeah, what did you expect? I mean, of course I was going to. Now he's committed. They've got to get him. No. No. See the go go go, the rushing, the panic, the loss of control. Oh [ __ ] he retreated down into the basement. >> [ __ ] [ __ ] I NEED MY [ __ ] here. [ __ ] [ __ ] [ __ ] I GOT STABBED in my leg. >> Okay, so now you have the suspect retreated further down. Everybody is saying go go go. They're moving super quick. They're trying to get up on him. Now you have an officer that's injured. Now you have two situations. Someone has to get that officer out unless he can self evac, but there's so much stuff in there. You have two situations going on here now. >> Yeah, you saw this coming. >> He is hit. He is hit. He is down. Up. Yeah. Benjamin, we cannot help you. Got to let the police know. Five chamber. >> Everything is just so fast-paced right now. >> No, he's in the basement. >> Which leg? >> Is he stabbed? >> Yeah. >> Lower left leg >> He's bleeding out. >> Oh, no. >> He's all right. >> Benjamin, can you hear me? >> Oh, [ __ ] >> He's bleeding out a lot. >> I know that for a fact. >> Benjamin. >> He's lost a lot of blood so far. Oh, no. >> He's lost a lot of blood. >> Um I'm going to call for a voice. >> He's bleeding out. >> Benjamin. >> Is he in the drone down there? >> If you are injured, I need you to come to me. >> No, I I I thought he >> The other two did not. >> No, they were too busy getting stabbed. >> I mean, do you think he hit him? >> 100% he said there's massive blood loss in him. >> He had He did have a shotgun. >> Oh, yeah. >> I thought it I don't know. All I could see was his face and some shoulder cuz he was like stabbing from behind the corner. >> Yeah. >> So, I don't know. He probably hit like in the shoulder. >> Keep the air clear. >> Ready? >> Don't move. Don't move. Benjamin. >> He is down. He is He is down. He's down short. >> Okay, so they can see him. >> I'm I'm I'm going to cover the bunker. I got him. He's down. Where's his hands? His hands are right there. >> Okay. >> Watch his hands. >> All right. >> Cut. >> Bring a medical. Get him back in here. >> Cut. >> Five down. We sent a medical again. >> Hey. Let's go. Hey. Don't move that knife, Troy. Don't let him move that knife out of the way. It was right beside his body. Did you take a picture of that? >> Yeah. Don't don't move it yet. >> Hey. Listen. We have shell casings on the stairs. Do not disturb them. >> The suspect, Benjamin Wheeler, was pronounced dead at the scene. The standoff ultimately lasted more than 6 hours [music] and involved multiple attempts to make contact, deploy gas, and safely clear the home. But, it ended in a violent struggle as officers attempted to take him into custody. Multiple SWAT officers were stabbed during the confrontation, but all survived [music] their injuries. Ultimately, the standoff ended with Wheeler's death, bringing the case to its final conclusion. >> So, here here's my opinions on that whole thing. 6 hours on a SWAT callout like that with a determined barricade subject is not a long time to to make entry like that. I mean, we've been on 15 16-hour, you know, long standoffs. And and there's a lot of people out there that will probably leave in the comments, you know, that us California boys take forever to to make entry into a house, but you know, the reality is is we want to preserve life, right? Not only ours, but the suspects as well. And and unfortunately, in this case, I felt it was rushed. Um the tactics on this there could have been different tactics used to try to drive him out of the house. But, ultimately, multiple cops ended up getting stabbed. And and really in the totality of everything, like how did you not see that coming? So, that's kind of my thought on it. I feel like things could have been done a little bit different and maybe slowed it down a little bit. >> Yeah, definitely agree with that. And the difference in SWAT teams, there's plenty of differences. Full-time teams get a lot of practice. You have reps with people. You have peer discipline. You understand exactly what people's responsibilities are, their specialties in specific areas. Then, you have ancillary SWAT teams, which I I presume is this, where these officers have different responsibilities in in a department. They may be a detective or working patrol. An incident happens, they all collectively come together. And generally, they only train maybe once a month and they may be shooting that month or the next month, they may working on entry. That's why you see a lot of different people doing a lot of different talking because they're probably uh leaders in their own areas and then they come together and they're all trying to lead. This is where discipline, slowing down, and understanding what you're looking at makes a big difference. Going up, simply the placement of the Bearcats makes a big difference. Keep the thing broadside if you can unless you need to use the push front. And then take your time, develop the plan, and if you're going to develop a plan, then everyone needs to be on the same page. We saw that with the gas deployment. They're deploying gas, then walking it back, asking to put their masks on. They moved up multiple times and officer was injured. A lot of things to learn on this and takeaways, the difference of a full-time versus ancillary teams, but taking your time could have prevented some of these officers from actually being injured. >> Yeah, and utilizing the resources and tools that you have available to you.
