A mom of two on vacation visiting Florida, coming from the Bahamas, tries to self-checkout her way to some serious savings. She scanned some items, but for many others, like this pair of kids blue jeans, for example, she flipped the tag and fake scanned it before handing it over for bagging. She continues this pattern and eventually gets random help from a Walmart employee, but is still able to somehow get items past her. Eventually, she pays for some of the items and proceeds to the exit with her kids. Then gets the infamous and many times useless receipt check, finally walking past the first two double doors, where loss prevention jumps in from two angles. One lady coming from outside and the man on the phone already waiting simply spins around. They stop her, telling her they saw her failing to scan certain items, and they need to speak to her in the Walmart security room. They walk back into the store before she remembers her little children, turns around, and says [music] something to the lady she's with, and then walks back towards loss prevention, where inside the room, body cam captures her excuses she tries to sell to [music] police. As far as I thought it like because it's the same thing. Too many items, Sylvia, to misunderstand. Misunderstanding I had it I noticed it. A misunderstanding is one, maybe two items, not 23. No. Not $211 worth. That's what happened. >> That is called theft. No. No. Yes. Well, see what happened is I hold it up, I just scan it like I said, but I see the tag over I just scan it like that. Like I said, the woman was helping me, but I don't want to put my parent for it because I'm not that type of person. I I don't get no trouble. You all run my name. I don't get no trouble. I'm not that type of person. That's that's what everybody says when they get caught stealing. No, you you run my name. I you run the name. I I don't get no trouble. We'll charge her for everything. It's just a misunderstanding. It wasn't intentional. So. >> A misunderstanding is one or two items not 23. All of a sudden Uh 211 items I got I got two small kids officer please let me just pay for it please. >> You had that opportunity when you were doing the self-checkout. That was your opportunity to scan and pay for the items. I I told I was going through. I didn't I didn't mean to do what it would happen. Officer please I can I just pay please I have two small children. Please officer please I it wasn't a it was a similar officer please. Is she living over here? No she's not. >> No I I just on vacation. It's just within it was just a mistake. When are you leaving? I'm leaving on Friday. What's that? Friday. It's just a mistake officer just please I have two small kids please. I'm not from over here. But just because you're not from here doesn't mean that you can steal. >> No I'm not stealing officer. You didn't steal. No. You didn't scan those items. No officer well I I was rushing cuz my cousin keep calling cuz I was on the phone my cousin keep calling. I was trying to hurry and scan everything. Like it wasn't it wasn't intentional officer please. Please. Can I just pay for the miss items please? You had that opportunity but beyond that. Officer it wasn't it wasn't it was just a misunderstanding. I didn't It's not a misunderstanding. Officer please I have two small kids please. You should have thought about that. Officer like it it wasn't intentional. Yes it was very intentional. Watching the video it was very intentional. I was on the phone my cousin keep asking where he was where he was. I was trying to hurry and cash and some of the stuff officer just get messed. I thought I was grabbing like please miss please. Mom. I it wasn't intentional like Can I just pay for it? >> for that just stop saying the same thing. You know that it's not okay. do anything. I just want to pay for it, please. >> With the knock on the security room door, the officer meets with her cousin who's waiting outside. You want to know what? Well, we're still working out that, okay? This is There's a lot of items that you were seen not paying for. It was over $200. Does I don't I'm not sure if you You know where the self-checkout is? There's cameras right there and on the videos it shows her not paying for a lot of items. So, it's like $230 to $250 to be exact. Walmart doesn't want her to pay for it. So, yeah, we're still kind of working it out. Yeah. Where Where you going to be at? Yeah, it's probably going to be like another 10 15 minutes. Where you going to be out front or something? Or something? Go ahead, stand up. Go ahead, stand up. Don't make me yank you up. Stand up. Officer, all I got to say I told the problem person said, "Please, let me just pay for it." So, they don't want that. They want to proceed charges. Fresh charges, so you're going to go to jail. You could be released today, but your family members have to go to the jail and get you out. Okay? Please, don't press charges on me, please. The officer then goes to tell her cousin that Walmart is going to press charges. So, Walmart because it's so much It's like $250, they want to press charges for theft. So, if they want to press charges, we have to arrest her. Okay? Because she doesn't live within our county, she lives far away. So, for example, if she lived in Orlando, she still would still have to go to jail. In our policy, we have to take her to jail. Okay? So, she could be released, you just got to go to the jail and get her out. Okay? That's the jail. Yeah. Yeah. How far is the jail? It's about 45 minutes. I can give you the address. Where Where you staying at? You staying in Orlando? Yeah. Okay. That's from last night. Yeah. All right, God. So, I don't know if y'all from the Bahamas. Yeah. But I don't know how it is in the Bahamas. When you go to jail, you have to pay to get them out. That's how it is here. Oh, you have to pay? Yeah. So, if she doesn't pay, then she has to stay in jail. in the jail until she until tomorrow when she sees the judge. She has to go to jail? Yeah. What? So, how much she have to pay? $500. That's to get her out of jail. How much to get her out of jail? To get her out. So, a lot of people that come and steal from Walmart here, they always have a lot of money on them. I don't know why they don't pay. You I arrested someone last week and they they didn't scan like a hundred and something dollars and they he had a a whole thing of cash. Just pay the money. You have to spend more money getting her out of jail. So, Yes. Yeah. So, I can give you the address. Please. I think so. Oh man, everything that she did purchase, I can give to you so you can take it. Yeah. So, you will you want the address? Yes. So, if you want to look in your Google, you got Google Maps? Yeah. So, if you type in Lake County Jail. Yeah, that's where the phone number is probably. It'll be this one right here. Do you want the phone number as well? No, I think I did call them. Does she have a little kid? Yes, she has a kid. Where's the little Where's the kids at? Okay. So, they're in the car, they're not You got They got We got to put her in handcuffs. We We don't want her to see. Yeah, she's coming home now. Um I'll talk to them to see if she could give you Yeah. Is the phone number on there? Yeah. Her stuff. Yeah. This is stuff she take. I already talked to her. This is her stuff. It's over $500. Yeah, I already told her. So, this is everything that she purchased. This is all her stuff. Okay. Hi Oscar. So. They wanted your They wanted to have They could get your card because you got to pay $500 to get out. I don't know if they will accept this. They don't accept credit or debit cards. Well, they got to take out money. Yeah, I said get money. Do you want to know You want her to know your your code to get out? How do you know today? You can't, but you got to pay it to get out. You don't pay it, you stay there till tomorrow until you see the judge. And the judge will determine if you could you get out or not. And they take the payment there? Yeah, but you got to pay cash or they got to go to the bondsman. Okay, I'll pay you cash. But they can't pay with a card. Okay, I'll pay you cash. You want to know you want them to know? Yeah, you guys I'll pay for the cash now let's get going to the Ma'am? The report. Let's go out there in the car. I don't want to sign. Okay. My report like that. My bad. She said we going there Yeah. She said we going She said we going there now. Yeah, we're going there now. Yep. So you could go there or drop things off. It's about 45 minutes to an hour drive with all the traffic. And then it takes about 45 minutes to an hour for them to process her. Yeah. Okay. You're welcome. The woman is charged with petty theft. Petty theft in Florida occurs when someone knowingly takes or attempts to take property that doesn't belong to them with the intent to permanently or temporarily deprive the owner of it. Specifically, petty theft in the first degree is when you take $100 through $749. This is a first-degree misdemeanor with maximum penalties if convicted of up to 1 year in jail and up to a $1,000 fine. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in the court of law.
