story features marlon crutchfield a
professional photographer retired
veteran and former federal law
enforcement officer in his retirement
marlin dialed in his hobby to create a
career in real estate photography on
december 21st he was waiting outside of
a client's home for an appointment in
foxcroft heights while testing his
equipment a resident of the area asked
if he needed help when marlin told him
he didn't the neighbors called the
police alleging that marlon was taking
pictures of a nearby military base the
base was about half a block away and as
we've seen in many videos pictures of
the gate can be seen clearly through
google's street view his clients arrived
and marlin went about conducting his
business moments into the appointment
officers of the arlington county police
department arrived on scene
hi how's it going hey there does that
bmw belong to you guys uh yeah that's a
photographer oh he's a photographer yeah
yeah so did you guys hire him to do
something yes oh perfect with all
suspicion of wrongdoing negated this
should be the moment the officers walk
apologizing for interrupting the work of
good citizens doing their best to
contribute to society but the officers
intend to ask more questions is that
let me talk to you just a sec
because you i think you were like taking
pictures or something there by a
military base so neighbors were worried
yeah and we got called
i don't know
because
i'm retired okay i was also a federal
agent perfect i'm retired from that so
you you understand that i'm i'm sorry
of her so you understand what we're
coming to right i understand that we
have a very nosy neighbor that didn't
see me take a picture of anything okay
that didn't seem to take a picture he
saw me with my camera okay

in this climate it is irresponsible to
take that position
and i'm offended by it as having a
bronze star you can see i'm retired
i was in law enforcement this is
ridiculous good pictures sell houses
informing a buyer that the home they
intend to occupy is a stone's throw from
a secured gate of a military compound is
certainly of interest by now we all know
that pictures can be taken of whatever
the eye can see while occupying a public
space or from your own property the
resident of this house could legally
install security cameras and have
24-hour surveillance of the gate
operations if it were illegal taking
christmas photos with the family in the
backyard would land them in jail that's
ridiculous yes sir and i didn't put the
camera at the base i'm retired i
understand you show my id so it's
unnecessary and this is uncalled for

you didn't say one word and i was with

point i wanted to check with him because
that's a military base and he had a

was hired to take pictures from this
house
and he said he didn't take any pictures
of the gate but and he didn't even let
me speak he just talked talk talk and
when asked to see his idea he felt
extremely authentic pull his phone
thinking it was ratio a racial thing
like i just wanted to check if
everything's okay because he's some
military base right there that's a whole
problem so
right so with that we're probably just
gonna we just need to get this
information for a little report request
i got on my mdt his information
his address name and everything i can
give it to you
yeah there's a guy right there yeah
that's he's extremely like
it in russian when it has nothing to do
with race like you had a
camera running from a military base
that's the whole thing why i want to
check it out yeah yeah um welcome

i'm over here the upcoming edit was not
me law enforcement agencies often edit
out portions of video to protect the
privacy of victims it has been proven
that many body-worn camera releases have
been edited to hide their wrong doings
while the privacy of victims is
extremely important it has become a
crutch that many departments use to
prevent transparency with the public
countless agencies have their own
youtube channel and media staff that
create elaborate videos of their
incidents this practice aids in their
controlling of a narrative it is unclear
who edited this particular portion of
the video or if the edit was intended to
hide a conversation or details of the
encounter that would paint the officers
in a bad light but i would be
conciliated if departments released all
body cam dash cam 911 calls and dispatch
recordings to the public in their
entirety to allow us to make our own
decisions
i mean yeah sorry

raised racist i'm like dude look at me
are you serious like i'm from brazil i
like i had a black lady tell me i'd be
really comfortable with traffic stop

we just got our coffee and cause a male
with a camera photograph in front of a
military base type of thing so i didn't
care about race or anything like that
like you're yeah
like nowadays it's
i don't know where you're taking
pictures off like
it could be like
taking pictures of someone else
it could be of it's like people jogging
people showering i don't care
like you don't have to make it race like
it could be asian white whatever columns
you're gonna ask for your id i'm still
gonna do the whole my job yeah and he
was complaining i was stuck uh prevent
him to do his job he was taking pictures
inside the house like man i'm doing my
job i'm trying to do my job too you
didn't let me talk at all like he just
and all the stuff and
ask for my badge and i was like cool
dude
the officer presumably ran marlon's
plates and passed off the information to
the mps and the encounter ended without
further incident marlin posted his video
to facebook a few days later it is
unclear whether he filed a complaint but
the head of the arlington naacp is
seeking a meeting with arlington
commonwealth's attorney the arlington
county police released a statement
saying that they strictly adhere to the
protections afforded by the constitution
to assure everyone's rights are
safeguarded even though the practice of
running plates has an intrusive aspect
no judge is likely to grant relief on
the practice and would not view it as a
fourth amendment violation it's about
time that photography is not considered
suspicious or a crime if you live in the
arlington area and need a photographer
