This incident begins at an American Airlines gate where a passenger has been denied boarding after airport staff report disruptive and threatening behavior. But instead of leaving the gate area, the situation escalates when he forces his way onto the jet bridge, putting airport personnel in a position where they now have to get him back under control. The breakdown starts now. >> Where is he? >> He somehow managed to make it down. >> Excuse me. Get out of the way, please. >> Yo, let's go. >> Let's go. Come with me. >> Let's go. What are you doing? >> What are you doing? Let's go. >> I'm doing nothing. >> Get off the bridge. Let's go. At this point, the officer's priority is gaining voluntary compliance through a simple direct command. Giving the man a clear opportunity to leave on his own also helps the officer gauge whether verbal direction will be enough or whether a different approach may be necessary. >> You don't listen to people. Is that your problem? Come on, let's go. Keep walking. >> Look, >> listen. >> When we get to the end, we talk. All right. >> Okay. I >> Let's go. >> Can I talk? >> No, you walk at the end. Talk. Walk now. We talk later. Yeah. >> No, I don't have to listen. >> Yeah, you do. >> Yeah, you do, buddy. >> Come on. Let's go. >> Come on, man. No. Please >> move. >> No vinyl still, right? >> Listen. >> Don't make it. Don't make this behind. >> If they're telling you not to go on the plane, why why don't you listen to them? >> Getting him off the jet bridge resolves the immediate access issue. But his demeanor now becomes important. If he remains agitated and unreceptive to direction, officers have to determine whether they can continue gaining cooperation verbally or need to tighten control over the encounter. Okay. >> I'm working for so it's is really necessary. >> If they tell you you're not flying, you're not flying. >> Why are you being so loud? >> I have been discriminated. >> Why are you being so loud? >> I'm not complaining. >> We're trying to help you. We're trying to help them. >> When you if you want to help me, I need to take this place. I don't know why they tell >> they don't have to have a reason. That's a private private company. No, >> they can tell you anybody they want to discriminate. >> Let me get a translator here. Okay. about boarding. >> Lentia poor favore. If he asks you that, >> we're going to have a problem. >> I don't have a problem. >> Oh, I'm going to have a problem. >> I I I >> I'm going to tell you. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Nothing. >> It's pretty bad for you right now. >> You're being ridiculous. >> The officers are making the situation clear. The decision about whether he flies has already been made. Their focus now is getting him to accept that decision and cooperate with the next steps, but his loud and agitated demeanor is making that communication much harder. >> I don't know. Why? >> You You have a clear problem with listening. >> You have a very clear problem with listening. >> I'm a vocational. >> Okay. So, what? >> You think you're going to just walk onto the plane after they told you no? That's like a 2-year-old. >> So, he's he's going to go for battery or he hit him trying to get down to the gate. >> That new information changes the officer's role. They're no longer focused only on getting him out of the gate area. If they now have information supporting an arrest, their priority shifts toward taking him into custody while keeping the transition as controlled as possible. >> All right, stand up. Put your hand behind your back. >> She's being arrested for battling. Stand up and put your hand behind your back. >> She's broken my my arm. >> Put your hand behind your back. >> I'll put this. >> Okay. Stop. >> Okay. I I just want to take my >> This is what's going to happen. You're going to go to the ground. I just I don't I just put you behind your back. I got this. >> You're not You're not okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. >> Okay. Put your hands behind your back. >> I'm in the ground, man. You sure are. >> Put your hand behind your back. >> Stop resisting and put your hand behind your back. >> We're okay. >> Oh, man. What are you doing, man? I'm a vacation, man. Man, >> you could have a very hard time. >> Okay. Please. >> You want to go? >> Help me. >> Yeah. >> Somebody help me. Mr. >> You're getting arrested, man. Stop making it a big deal. >> Why am I arrested? Why am I arrested? >> I didn't know. >> The man was taken into custody after officers learned more about what happened before they arrived. What began as a dispute over being denied boarding resulted in criminal charges related to forcing his way past airport staff and resisting arrest. The key turning point here was the additional information officers received once they had grounds to make an arrest. their role shifted from trying to resolve the situation voluntarily to taking him into custody.
