Put your hands back. Put your hands back. Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands back. >> I don't want to be >> Joel here with Body Cam Breakdown TV. Today's footage comes from police release. If you want to watch the original video without my commentary or breakdown. I'll have the full footage linked below so you can watch it start to finish. Today's video starts with officers pulling over a vehicle for expired registration tags. What begins as a routine traffic stop quickly gives officers more to deal with as they make contact with the driver. The breakdown starts now. >> How you doing? Hi, >> I'm Sergeant White Police. I'm stopping you at one. You got a headlight out. Two, your license plates are expired. They've been expired since March. Are you aware of that? >> Uh, no, I didn't know. >> Do you have a driver's license, don't you? >> Yes. >> Do you have insurance for this car? >> Uh, yeah. >> Can I see it, please? >> I have it on my phone. >> That's fine. Mr. Edwards, we've been smoking cannabis today. Smoking some weed today? >> Uh, a little early. >> A little early. How long earlier are we talking? >> Probably like 3 hours ago. The visible smoke gives the officer an immediate reason to shift his attention beyond the expired registration. His questions are now aimed at figuring out what's producing that smoke and whether it affects what he needs to investigate next. >> A little early. How long earlier are we talking? >> Probably like 3 hours ago. >> I got you. Who's been smoking weed in here? >> Nobody. >> I got >> You just got blunt. >> He got a black. >> Oh, black. I got you. >> I can't find >> You can't find it. All right. I'll be right back. Okay. The officer appears to be testing her explanation against what he's observing rather than simply accepting the timeline she gives him. Checking her information also gives him a chance to verify the traffic stop details while deciding whether the marijuana issue requires any further attention. >> Hey, Miss Edwards. Come here. Did you find it? Come here. Come for a second. We're going to talk. Step out of the car. I'm I'm going explain that to you when you get out of the car. >> Okay. Well, you I don't have to have your permission to search the car. And if you don't get out of the vehicle, no, I don't. That's called No. Miss Edwards. Miss Edwards, I'm asking you nicely. Okay. I'm I'm not asking you. I'm telling you to step out of the vehicle. Now, Miss Edwards and And you and the Supreme Court of the State of Illinois says you have to anyone has to get out of the vehicle when advised to. Okay. >> At this point, the officer is moving from explaining his request to establishing that getting out of the vehicle is not being presented as optional. By explaining the requirement directly, he's removing any confusion about what he expects from her and giving her another opportunity to comply voluntarily. And you and and Miss Miss Edwards, I'm telling you right now, if you don't get out of the vehicle, you're going to be placed under arrest for resisting. Okay? So, step out of the vehicle. I'm asking I'm trying to work with you, but you got to work with me a little bit here, okay? I really don't want to take you to jail for something like this, but please step out of the vehicle. You've already committed the offense of resisting, arrest, and obstructing. So, please step out of the vehicle. Miss Edwards. Miss Edwards, I really don't want to take you to jail for this. Okay? You want your mom to calm you down first? You got to I I'll let your mom calm you down. You got to roll this window down. Miss Edwards, I don't want to I'm going to break it if you don't roll it down. So, please >> I'm going to get out the car. So, please step out of the car. >> Her saying she'll get out gives the officer another opportunity to gain voluntary compliance without having to force the issue. At this point, the key is whether her actions begin matching what she's telling him. >> I'm I'm giving you nothing but nothing but nice and cooperation with us. Something that I don't have to give you. You could already be placed under arrest or resisting. I could break the window and drag you out of the car. I could tase you, but I'm not doing that. I don't even tell you you're going to jail. You just got to work with me. Okay? I'm giving you about 30 more seconds. Mr. Edwards, >> I just said please. I'm not dragging you out of the car. I'm just opening the door. >> I already been gaining him my car and my license. >> I haven't, but you got you still got to get out of the car, Miss Edwards. And I can explain it to your mama. But you're an adult. Be more than happy to explain it to her, too, by how the law is. >> Getting the door open removes the immediate barrier between the officer and the driver. But compliance still depends on whether she follows through with the instruction to exit. The officer can now focus on gaining that cooperation without having to deal with a locked vehicle. >> But you got to get out of the car for me. Thank you. You got to leave that bag in here though. No, Miss Edwards. I cannot say anything. >> Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your back. >> Put your hands You're under arrest. Put your hands BEHIND YOUR BACK. >> WHAT? >> PUT YOUR HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK. >> Put your hands behind me. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> Put your hands behind your back. That's arrest for aggravated battery on police officer. That was smart, wasn't it? The officer is identifying the bite as aggravated battery against an officer, but his immediate problem is that she's still actively resisting. That means he has to keep working toward gaining control while dealing with conduct that has now gone well beyond the original traffic stop. >> That arrest for aggravated battery police officer. That was smart, wasn't it? >> Let go. >> Let go. Put your hand behind your back. Put your hand behind your back. Put your hands behind YOUR BACK. >> PUT YOUR HANDS BEHIND your back. >> Put your hand behind your back. Mama, I mean, you're going to get tased. >> Put your hand behind your back. >> You're going to get tased. >> I am stupid ass. I swear to God. I can't. >> With the handcuffs secured, the officer has gained physical control, but that doesn't automatically mean the encounter is settled. Her behavior after being restrained will determine how much active management the officer still needs from this point. And and then >> that's exactly what the down >> biting me was. Stop me, bro. >> Stop. >> Calm down. >> Calm down. >> You're making this harder on yourself than it needs to be. >> Stand up. Come on. Come on. >> Stand up. Come on, dude. That's fine. >> Get the off of me, bro. >> Then walk. I'm asking you to walk. I'm asking you to walk. I'll carry then. I don't care. Biting someone is not very smart. >> Because y'all had no reason to put me in hell. The woman was taken into custody after officers were able to secure her in handcuffs. During the struggle, she bit the officer and the officer identified that conduct as aggravated battery against an officer. No additional verified information about formal charges or the court outcome was provided with the original footage. What started as a traffic stop changed significantly once cooperation broke down and the encounter became physical. The officer then had to shift his attention from the original investigation to gaining control and completing the arrest. What are your thoughts on how the officer handled this incident? Let me know in the comments below. If you enjoy these types of breakdowns, be sure to like, subscribe, and turn on notifications so you never miss a new video.
