I will give him the maximum because if anybody deserves it, he does. You know what the law is and you haven't followed it and neither has you and neither has you. Everybody sat here and Hear me out. Shut up. >> I'm not going to shut up while YOU >> GET HIM OUT OF HERE. Adam Benefield exploded in court because he was angry about the verdict. This is a man who controlled everything, his home, his wife, even her fear. She was so terrified, she sometimes wore a bulletproof vest, but not even that saved her. He ended her life in the middle of the street in front of their children while she was driving her daughter to school. And still, he believed he was the victim. In the courtroom, he wasn't broken or remorseful. He called the prosecutors liars. He attacked the jury calling them biased and demanded everyone listen to him. But then the judge had enough and for the first time, the man who thought he was untouchable received a sentence that he will remember for the rest of his life. Adam Benefield was not a man starting fresh. By the time he was in his 20s, he was a convicted criminal with a long record of aggressive behavior and incarceration. In March 2000, then 22-year-old Benefield carried out an unlawful abduction involving his estranged girlfriend and another woman on the Kensington Expressway. The incident escalated into a high-speed police chase. Later that year, in September 2000, while awaiting trial for the incident, Benefield escaped from the Erie County Correctional Facility in Alden. He achieved this by scaling a 15-foot wall. After a 19-hour manhunt, he surrendered to law enforcement. Upon being taken into custody, he told reporters he had escaped because he wanted to get some help. The reason for all this is because I wanted to get some help. The doc- the doctors refused to give me any help. As you see, I slipped and I'm Just wanted to get some help. Nobody want to help me. Benefield ultimately pleaded guilty to the charges, including the escape. He served approximately 15 years in prison. Despite this alarming history, Kiera Hudson chose to marry him after his release. For some, a relationship with a man from prison represents hope or perhaps a desire to fix what is broken. For Kiera, this choice became the foundation of her worst nightmare. She married the danger. Soon after their marriage, the behavior that defined Adam's past became the reality of Kiera's present. The mistreatment began and she knew she had to document it. Kiera turned to social media using her page not just a cry for help, but to record the evidence. Here, on September 28th, she posted security camera footage of the incident with the heartbreaking message that says, "This is what this man does to me, but I'm always treated like I'm the abuser." The images were shocking showing the harsh reality hidden behind closed doors. But her cries for help were met with indifference. In another post, she desperately spoke out about the failure of the authorities and how they refused to help. She was reportedly so terrified of her husband that she started wearing a bulletproof vest believing it was the only thing that stood between her and death. My mom asked her, "Why are you putting that vest on?" She said, "Because, Mom, he's going to kill me. You don't understand." Adam was arrested again, this time for a serious incident at home involving her. This was the moment the system had a chance to save her life. But following the arrest, Adam Benefield was released on bail despite his history and the protective order against him. This decision was a death sentence. It's extremely frustrating when you try you have so many steps in place and you know somebody is dangerous. You know there's a clear and present danger, yet the court has no option but to let this person back out into our community. Just days after his release, Adam Benefield was free to carry out his final horrific act. The tragic event occurred on Wednesday, October 5th, 2022. At approximately 8:30 a.m., Kiera Benefield was driving her vehicle with her three children when she stopped at an intersection in Buffalo. Adam Benefield intentionally struck her vehicle with his pickup truck. Following the collision, Benefield approached his estranged wife's vehicle and in a deliberate action, used a weapon to cause her death. Kiera Benefield passed away at the scene. Her three young children were present in the vehicle during this devastating event. It's a horrific crime. He murdered this young woman in front of her in front of her three kids. Um and then he fled the scene like a coward. After the incident, Benefield became the subject of a multi-agency law enforcement search including the Buffalo Police Department and the US Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force. He was eventually located, taken into custody, and formally charged. Women was in fear, so it's just a good thing that this monster is off of the street. On November 20th, 2024, following a three-day trial, a jury found Adam Benefield guilty of all counts, especially after hearing his 12-year-old daughter's testimony. Again, this case is horrible. My heart goes out to that now 12-year-old girl. But I submit that her conclusory testimony is not reliable. Her details were inaccurate and she admitted that she assumed that it was Adam Benefield. Didn't check on the kids to see if he injured them when he crashed his truck into their vehicle. He didn't check on the kids to see if he injured them when he shot Kiera with a shotgun. He made a choice to evade police rather than check on his own children. Benefield's sentencing hearing took place before State Supreme Court Justice William Boller on Monday, December 23rd, 2024. During the hearing, Benefield repeatedly interrupted the proceedings and raised a series of complaints directed at the court including allegations of withheld evidence and claims of bias. As the even though I got found guilty of these charges, obviously with the evidence not being 100% provided so that we can utilize the truth uh seeking function and the fact-finding procedure um which would have benefited the public at large and the family. Justice Boller initially attempted to maintain order and allowed the defendant time to speak. However, Benefield's statements were characterized by repeated excuses, disruptions, and a noted lack of remorse for the harm inflicted. You're here and you've got the jury convicted you of brutally killing your wife. You're interrupting me while I'm talking. I don't interrupt you, so why do you keep interrupting me? I know you're the judge, Okay. Hear me out. I've heard enough of this narcissistic You're a narcissist and I'm not going to put this family You are a narcissist because you're talking and you're going all over Shut this microphone off and if you keep talking, I'm going to do it without you and you'll be in there. I've heard enough from you. As the defendant continued his disruptive behavior, Justice Boller eventually deemed it necessary to remove Benefield from the courtroom to conclude the sentencing. You killed your wife. A jury of 12 convicted A white jury that did not have any black jurors on there and that's not law. That is a setup. So you want to send me out there, I'll go out there, but you know what the law is and you haven't followed it and neither has you and neither has you. All right. Everybody sat here and Hear me out. Shut up. I'm not going to shut up while you're >> out of here. Get me out of here. I want to apologize to these children. And I'm so sorry for some reason your mother ever ran into this guy. Um we join with the family in asking for the maximum which of course is 25 to life in this case. He deserves every minute of it and um any future parole board uh should never let him out. He did not learn his lesson from his convictions in 2000. Um He takes no responsibility for his actions whatsoever. Adam Benefield received the maximum penalty for the primary charge. Justice Boller sentenced him to the maximum term of 25 years to life in state prison for the crime committed against Kiera Benefield. Unfortunately, under the law, I cannot send him to jail for the rest of his life without any chance of parole, but I will give him the maximum because if anybody deserves it, he does. Adam Benefield didn't walk out of that courtroom. He was dragged out still shouting, still refusing responsibility, still trapped in his own lies. But the law had spoken and this time, he couldn't escape. If Benefield wasn't released from prison in the first place, Kiera would still be alive. So, who should be held accountable in this situation? Should the justice system be blamed for releasing Adam Benefield before the tragedy occurred? Should Kiera bear any responsibility for entering a relationship with someone who had a known criminal history? Or should the focus remain solely on Adam Benefield for the decisions and actions he ultimately chose to take? Comment your thoughts below.
