on June 20th 2023 the ottero County
Sheriff's Office received multiple
frantic 911 calls about a man driving
erratically and shooting at other
vehicles on the highway deputies met
with the first victim who described
driving normally until he suddenly heard
loud pops and saw his rear window
shatter from
[Applause]
gunfire hey how you doing sir you had
better days huh I've never had anything
like that I oh my wife doing
some work in her kitchen and I just
thought I'd rent home to see I work I
work at the bank
here and uh so so
I down oh about A4 mile out of town
there was a a little black car and just
kind of crazy like so we
passed it or let me think it back about
this or or I I saw the car going south
just about A4 mile out of hwn and he got
over the bridge up here and turned
around in that yard there and then he
came back think we were I was headed to
South he was heading north and then I I
looked in my mirror and he he like went
through the bar ditch and and then and
which which way did he go which way was
he going he he went this
way he was going
Southbound and there's a I I don't know
if he pulled into the there's kind of
some s some
uh Silo pits up there I I don't know it
seemed like he was kind of messing
around up there he's advising that he
believes that he may be by some Silo
pits that are up
ahead or he could have gone on up to
road JJ and our our neighbors up there
the Manning I like I said it's a little
it was a little black car little black
sedan and what did the driver look like
well it looked like a a young kid I mean
I and I did he look white black Hispanic
he he looked
white it's going to be a small black
sedan with a white male
driver and did you say look yeah
something just crazy [ __ ] like okay and
so so so he he came up from behind me
and just over in the other lane and and
uh you know I thought well I need to get
to my driveway here and boom oh he shot
you from back yeah I thought he shot you
this way and it came out that window no
he shot me from the oh my gosh he was
aiming for your head but but then
there's a uh I don't know if that's I
think that's a
fresh round right there oh yeah it is
what the heck and this is why you were
driving yeah as you were driving he was
shooting at yes and he came up from
behind in
okay so he came up from behind shot the
back window we we were both heading
south and he was like starting to try to
pass me but he was like just crazy
I I I mean I is it unlocked yes okay he
so I take it he shot at
you three times I I'm I'm guessing
possibly I'm guessing
one well where did did that one go out
that window then SC yeah I think
yet okay so so he must have come up
beside you and then shot and then boom
out that
window holy that don't get your flood
pump and I don't know if if that's a
hole right there in the bed or is that
just a piece of glass Ling right there
on my that's a it looks like a little
hole whatever probably maybe the impact
of
the of the glass shards
maybe okay let me take some quick
pictures of this real quick as it
is I didn't know going to come back or
but I I did not recognize you didn't
recognize him at all I did not recognize
would you be able to recognize the
vehicle I I think so
okay deputies then spoke with the second
victim a woman visibly shaken by the

encounter I'm I'm Deputy gozman Rick
gozman can you tell me what happened
before I have you you know cuz I'm going
to have you write everything out again
oh yeah okay yeah that way we can have
everything on record and I went to
Walmart about 10:00 this morning
from got my supplies was headed back
came in through Rocky Ford about 10 I
think it was about 10:50 a.m. that's
what I've been writing down got out here
on the
highway headed on the county road 14 and
the red truck in front of me I just P
County Road 16 mhm and the red truck in
front of me it was a real pretty red
truck and I was like oh that's a really
pretty red truck because he kind of been
following me going slower through Rock
Florida and then he went ahead sped up
to start going the speed limit and but I
noticed after he passed me and I was
going had just passed 16 he pulled over
in the left hand lane and then had his
brake light on and so I moved in the
left hand lane cuz I could see something
was going on ahead of me like there was
a black black vehicle on the wrong side
of the road coming towards me mhm slowly
but I did also notice that the traffic
that was coming east on in both lanes
had already come to a complete stop so I
don't know what they saw before
everything happened to
me so anyway I saw that the red truck
was stopping so I slowed way down and
didn't even get close to the red truck
but saw that black vehicle coming
towards me it was in the median on
driving down the wrong side on Highway
50 going
East and it kind of slowly started
coming towards me and I'm like oh he's
probably had a vehicle breakdown well
why would he been on the wrong side of
the road I didn't think about that so
later I thought maybe the person had a
breakdown and was trying to slowly cuz
he started coming towards me like maybe
he was going to try to get back on the
correct side of the road but then inste
he started coming straight for me and it
was some kind of black it was an older
Jeep something
and he said get out of your car and then
I saw him pointing a gun at
me and I was like my God what do I do I
thought I had my car in Reverse I was
going to try to reverse and see if I
could pull off or something but instead
I had my car and
drive
um so I hurried up and just hit the
accelerator to try to go past him and I
thought I was probably going to get shot
so I know I was kind of ducking down at
the same time and stepped on the
accelerator as hard as I could and then
I saw him coming towards my car and I'm
like oh my gosh he's going to shoot me
and he's going to hit me head on and he
that's when he hit my car and
fortunately my car didn't roll or
anything but then he sped off after that
I guess okay I end up having to crawl
out my passenger window cuz my car doors
wouldn't open what kind of vehicle is it
my vehicle it's a blue Ford Fusion you
can it's parked right out here okay 2016
bl4 Fusion and he didn't get out at all
he said everything through the window no
fortunately he did not get out okay he
yelled at me get out of your
car okay and what did he look like I
believe he was a white male with black
hair the gun was handgun was black and
the vehicle was black okay that's pretty
much what I remember for a description
fan okay you I I guess he was going
pretty fast you couldn't see what he was
wearing he was wearing anything at all
well he definitely had a jacket on or
something I don't remember what color
that was okay I just remember the black
hair black gun and the black vehicle
okay and you said he was a white manale
pretty sure he was white but I ducked I
didn't want him okay once he Y at me I'm
we are really glad that you are okay
okay this is a very traumatic event that
not everybody goes through and you are
without a doubt a survivor
okay so don't feel like you did anything
wrong or that there's anything else that
you could have done nobody knew that
this was going to happen
today okay on the
um like I said you know like on the
bright side you know you're okay you
know cars can be replaced people
cannot and you are a good able-bodied
person I am okay and you did everything
that you could have done you know as far
as ducking and try and moving and and
try to get away from okay there's
nothing else you could have done
different cuz if you would have came to
a complete stop and he would have came
to a complete
stop we we could have been working
something totally different okay
so without a
doubt you are you're good and then I'm
going to go outside and take pictures of
the car for okay okay

law enforcement soon located the
suspect's vehicle initiating a
high-speed Pursuit with assistance from
the Colorado State Patrol CSP Troopers
deployed stop sticks

of the chase continued as the suspect
drove recklessly showing complete
disregard for the law and Public
Safety we can

traic however while law enforcement was
securing the
the suspect wasn't finished he had a few
more tricks up his sleeve he managed to
slip his hands to the front crawl
through a small opening and take control
of the Troopers vehicle temp I
number adinga will successful go
that's the only reason we got involved
started to crash on road five somewhere
on road

five Terra 2 suspect just stole a CSP
patrol car he is eastbound High rate of
speed on
50 get in the bar I'm going to stay with
this go ahead and have radio disable the
radio please disable the radio and start
car
723 supect just stole a CP car he is
East found high speed
on50 open
now so pursu speed approximately 100
mph while fleeing the suspect drove
recklessly nearly causing several
collisions

the suspect managed to swerve around
them nearly losing control of the
vehicle

finally Troopers deployed Stop Sticks
again causing him to lose control
crashing into a park semi on the
roadside good hit good hit good hit

just me the impact caused the stolen
Cruiser to catch fire

here we got any more fire extinguishers
let's get them over here till we
fire any bottles of water or anything
that anybody's got gotten Vehicles some
here on this other side though dump it

deputies and Troopers quickly extracted
the suspect and transported him to a
nearby hospital where he later died from
injuries sustained in the crash
fortunately the truck driver was
unharmed my little Charlie 3 the semi-
driver seems to be okay just laid the
back of the truck over our
uh vehicle theft he is conscious not
looking real great though
and we did get him out of the vehicle
