Malia, crunch your ass to get it over with, bro. >> All she did was walk up her shirt off and all I saw was all this blood coming from right here. >> They was going live just on some ratings with some mics when it shouldn't have been avoided. >> There was just like my eyes. I [music] couldn't even see anything. She pretty much just went crazy like saying she was going to kill us and slash his tires and do all these things like she does to most people. >> [music] >> On March 26th, 20123, 17-year-old Briana Barzini went to her local smoke shop and convenience store, thinking it was going to be an ordinary night with her friends, but she was wrong. Briana had no idea what she was about to run into. This is 18-year-old Halia Colbertson, and she does not like Briana. So, it came as a shock to no one when she began yelling at her in the store. Their argument got heated enough that Halia and her friends were asked to leave the store. The employees present sensed the tension and how bad things were getting between the two. So, they tried to reason with Hali, telling her to back off, but it did the opposite. Briana tried to hide in the store, but she knew she couldn't stay in there forever. So, she gathered her courage and went outside. Within seconds, the argument turned into a screaming match. Little did they know, it wasn't going to be just that. Seconds after the fight, Halia staggered towards her friend's Jeep, and something was terribly wrong. >> I can't grab her. I'm pulling her. >> What's going on? [music] >> My friend just got stabbed at 161 stop carry out. She's in my friend's jeep. I'm on the I know who stabbed her. I know who stabbed her. I know who stabbed her. >> Who is it that did this? >> Briazini. [music] Brianna Pierine got me. >> Okay. >> She's [music] not in front of me. Please. >> She's on the They're on the way there right now. >> Paramedics got there within seconds. Followed by the police. Just get back, boss. Just get back. I know you're >> I know. I know. I need you to stay back. All right. Hey, you got to let them do their work. Okay. >> Come on, guys. Let's get back. >> Let's get back. Come on. >> Come on. I understand. Let's get back. >> Okay. I'm going to get your information. Did you see it? >> Yes, we Who saw it happen? >> The red hoodie. >> Okay. And the red hoodie? >> Yes. >> All right. I need you to get in the cruiser for me. Okay. I'm going to have to get you off your phone. All right. >> My mom, >> I understand that, but I need you. >> Okay. >> I need you to get in the cruiser. Okay. >> I'm talking to a cop. I have to hang out the phone. >> I will. I will. >> All right. I need you to hang out here real quick for me. Okay. >> Please don't let me. >> Nobody's [snorts] going anywhere. >> Adrien, >> no. I know you are. >> Coerson. C U L P E R T S O S. >> Cerson. All right. Go ahead and sit down for me. Okay. Have a seat. Is that you said that's your friend? >> Yes, it's my best friend. >> Okay. What's her name? >> Halia. H A L I A. >> Hold on one sec. One sec. I know it's hard. >> I can write it down if you want me to. >> H A Go ahead. >> L I A >> L I A >> C U L >> C U L >> P E R >> R >> T S O N T S O N. Do you know her date of birth? >> No. >> You don't know her date of birth? You know where she lives? >> Yes. >> Okay. Where she lives? >> She lives in Ohio, but I don't know exact. >> Yeah. Go ahead. Actually, I need you here. We need to have a >> I need you get that guy in the red hoodie. He saw it. And this guy here. Just sit down. >> We have to We have to tell them what happened. >> Oh, that's fine. Can I sit with my sister? >> I need to separate you guys. Okay. >> Just for integrity of the story. Okay. >> I know that I got over here. Okay. >> All right. >> Helia had suffered a stab wound to the upper torso and was taken to the nearest hospital in critical condition. In a usual stabbing case, the police have to piece together what happened and how the victim ended up in the situation. But this case would prove to be nothing like what the police are used to. [music] With multiple witnesses on scene, the police needed to hear everyone to figure out who's really telling the truth. So, they started with the person closest to her, McKenzie Adrian. >> All right. What happened? Bri Barazini stabbed her. They were getting into a fight. I was sitting in the jeep because I cannot be around Brie Barini because her baby, her brothers, my baby dad, and me and her have issues. >> Do you know how to spell beerini? >> B A R O Z I N I. >> C I N I. Okay. >> Pine Oakville, Ohio. That's where she lives. >> She lives in Westerville, you think? >> West. I know she lives in Westville. She lives in West. >> She said they got in a fight. Go ahead. They got into a fight and as Halia walked to the front door of the Jeep, I saw she had a gash on her. She got in the car and she goes, "I'm getting nauseous. I hopped out the car. I called 911 because I didn't see the fight. I was sitting in the jeep looking away cuz I'm not I can't be Bri. I can't be part of that. >> You didn't see the actual fight?" >> No, but I know who Brie Bearini is. I know her mother and I know her address. >> Okay. Okay. All right. Hang out for me. Okay. >> Okay. >> All right. Stay off your phone. Okay. >> I need you to keep it. I know it's >> it's my mom. That's the only reason. >> I know it's hard, but I just need you to kind of keep off your phone for a minute. All right. Do >> I have to say >> you can I keep the door open? Is that okay? >> Yeah. I just >> Will you be okay if I keep the door? Am >> I allowed to hit my nickname? >> Yeah, go ahead. >> Okay. Thank you so much. >> But then they spoke to Halia's friend Dylan Barage and got something they were not expecting. >> The whole thing on video. >> On video. >> Whole thing. >> Okay. Um, awesome. That's fantastic. >> Oh, I mean it's crystal clear HD video. But he was there were two girls standing right here fighting. >> They were just mouththing. >> Where at? Does it show? >> Um, >> just I want to make sure I get the whole scene out. >> Wherever there's blood is right where it happens. >> Okay. >> You mind if I watch it real quick, buddy? >> Does it show the car on there at all? >> Uh, actually might. Hold on. Come here. >> Just start it from me. >> Am I allowed to come out? >> Hold up. >> Yep. Go ahead. is the one in the orange. >> Bro, get it over withah. >> Who's to you? >> Halah. My She's like my little sister. I've known >> crunchy. >> But you can tell started bleeding in the entire fight. You better get your girl before she get up even more. >> I saved you down there. You could tell [laughter] that button down there. Save. I might >> Here's what we're going to do. I'm going to put your phone on airplane mode, buddy. >> Yes, sir. You do >> I want to see it right on the dash like right where it was. >> Yes, sir. You do what you need to do, man. >> All right. >> Thank you. >> Are you the detective? >> No. Okay. The video captured the entire thing, but somehow it led to more questions than answers. And with Briana on the run, it was up to the people who were with them to try to bridge the gaps. The cops didn't know that it was going to be a lot harder than they anticipated. >> Hey, y'all better not punk me for crying, bro. >> Dude, ain't nobody punking you, man. This is This is crazy. >> I just need you to relax, okay? >> Oh my god. just hold my sister. She was bleeding out. I didn't even know she was bleeding out until came up to me. >> Sorry. 3713. [snorts] How old was uh your sister? >> She was like 18, 19. >> How old was that Bri girl? >> I think she's she's still a minor, I'm pretty sure. Bro, like >> was she? >> Yeah. I don't even think she's 18. >> What did it all start over? >> So, all right. So, Kenzie Kenzie's baby dad is Bree's older brother, >> right? >> Who's Kenzie? >> The one in that. >> Oh, right here. >> Yeah. The blonde. The blonde. >> Okay. called. Who called? >> Right. So, her brother >> her baby dad is her brother and her baby dad. >> Okay. >> Kenzie's baby dad. >> Yes. Kenzie's baby dad. >> Okay. So, the girl here, >> she has a baby dad and then >> her baby dad is Bree's older brother. >> Older brother. Got it. >> They've had beef for the >> the child's going to four years old. So, they've had beef for almost 5 years type. You know what I'm saying? Like >> it's crazy. >> Beef like domestics violence or what? >> Yeah. Like if you were to look up Genanoa County and the Kenzie Adrian like it there's a case upon case upon like me personally I've pulled up to fight the baby dad because he would not leave like [snorts] like I look at like Kenzie's mother adopted me like not legally but my mom kicked me out from the ages of 14 to 17 and Kenzie's family took me the in. >> Okay. >> So I'm very protective over Kenzie and whoever Kenzie affiliates with. Hey, check on the female in 12. Make sure she's okay, >> please. But like that's my little sister and I've I've always been protective over her. And Bray Barazini, she she the girl who did, she just always runs. She just sits there and she talks. She talks and I saw the I saw the knife drop, but I didn't think it got used, bro. >> Where's the knife at? >> It was They picked them, man. They they got video. They the people who did it, it was it was Brie Barini and I want to say he's Arabic, but I don't want to be racist and be wrong. That's fine. >> But like he looked Arabic. He had two moles on his face. I got I got both of their faces on video. Like no cap. It's >> like clear as motherucking day. You can see their mothering faces on video. >> Um if I would have known my sister was going to get stabbed between a fight like >> like I know it's bad to say like I know. Like >> so Bri was fighting with >> Bri and Bri and Halia were supposed to be fighting while they were in uh the Columbus. >> Was this like a plan thing or what? >> No, it was random as she came in while we came in. Like it was random as she smoke. >> Yeah, in the smoke shop right there. Okay. >> She it just >> happened to come in and they started going at it in the store >> and Bri called Helia a cokehead. >> Okay. >> Helia is a sober like she's a she's a recovering addict. So, she took that into great offense. You know, I don't know if you've met any recovering addicts, but like me personally, I'm one. >> Who was an addict? I'm sorry. >> Helia. Helia was an addict. So, and she called she called Halia out on being >> a co. >> Yeah. So, like Helia got mad and Halia was waiting outside and they were supposed to just fight. It >> was supposed to be just be a fight. Like I like I was there. I was supposed to be like in between it. I didn't even see a knife get pulled. Like I'm not sure if it was a knife or if she had a ring on her finger and just got her like you know what I'm saying? Like >> cuz the knife got pulled out and it was on the ground and I saw it. >> What kind of knife was it? >> It looked like a switchblade. Like a butterfly knife type. >> Okay. >> Type of knife. >> But I'm not entirely sure. >> Okay. >> Like I'm going to be honest with you. But she didn't have time to pull it out cuz Helia like I'm not going to lie, that's my little sister. But she smacked the out of her first. Like you can see it on the video. >> Hia smacked her. >> All you saw from that was hands on hands. There was no like digging into pockets and >> pulling out and going like, you know what I'm saying? There was none of that cuz if I would have seen that, I would have already been in there and >> right, >> y'all would have been called sooner. We didn't know she was bleeding out till she got it back. She like >> she she crunched Bri in the face. Bri was on the ground and she walked away. Aaliyah walked away, got in the Jeep ready to drive, >> right? And she was sitting there and Kenzie comes over to me and goes, she's spitting blood out of her chest. And I come over and I just see like right in this area on the right or left side of left side of her chest >> shooting blood. My first reaction is take my [ __ ] shirt off, put it on top, put pressure on it. I've had mothering I've had my brothers die in my arms because they got shot and >> I didn't put pressure on pressure on it. You know what I'm saying? Like I didn't put pressure fast enough. So like >> that's rough. That's rough, brother. >> Rough, >> man. Just please save my sister, bro. >> Okay. Did we get your information yet? >> Uh I get I I'm pretty sure I gave it to him, but I can give it to you to our >> It's okay. Just wait. Just wait. Just wait. >> Please don't make me get back in there. I got anxiety being >> It's okay. Just chill. Just relax. You're good. Okay. Going to be okay. >> [gasps] [laughter] >> Did the switchblade look like it had blood on it? >> No. >> And like I I honestly feel like if she got stabbed like a a ring or something like >> You think she got stabbed with a ring? >> Like honestly like I feel like it was one of those like probably like self-defensive rings where it was like you shove it in my mother your shoulder and it pops a hole. Like that's what I feel like. I didn't see the blade come out. Like I was standing like I'm clear as day in the video standing right there holding it like >> Yeah, that's what he said. >> Um I got to get uh I got to call 173. I think that's who went to the hospital. >> Yes. >> Talk to them. >> I think so. >> Can you see if you can find data birds on those two? >> Uh I can definitely I can give you my information again if you got your >> Do you know His Do >> you know when she was born? How old she is? Maybe. >> I would ask Kenzie before me. I did. I'm really bad with dates. Uh I want to say it's >> she an adult or >> Yeah, she's an adult. She's an adult. She's She's 18. >> She's definitely She's definitely 181 19. >> I know that for sure, but I can't remember which one. I'm so bad with dates. I like >> That's okay. >> The more information the officers received, the more twisted this story became. >> I told you that you can't have your phone with you right now, okay? because we just need to have the complete picture of what you have in your head. >> Okay. Do you know >> be okay? >> Do you know? Yeah, she's okay. She's doing good. >> Uh-huh. Um, do you know what? Did Did uh Kalia say anything about like what she got hit with? >> No, didn't have any time to say anything. All she did was walk up and took her shirt off and all I saw was all this blood coming from right here. She got into the front seat and I got to the passenger seat. She goes, >> "I'm nauseous." And her head went back and I got out the car, ripped the door open. I said, "Dam, get her out of the car. I'm on the phone with 911 right now." >> Okay. Okay. >> Just hang out for me. Okay. >> Can I talk to your mom for you? >> Is it the the bad Betty? >> Yeah, that's my mom. >> That's your mom? Okay, >> she calls again, I'll I'll let her know you're with us and she can't talk to you right now. >> McKenzie's family was growing anxious. And while Hali's friends were key witnesses, they didn't realize they weren't the only people there that night. And this new witness turned the whole case around. >> Did you see anything? >> I >> You work where? At the >> truck. Yeah. >> Did you see anything or? Yeah, I seen a glimpse of what happened there. >> How much? >> Um I know he got a video camera after the whole situation. >> Who does? >> The gentleman over there talking to the cop. >> Okay. >> Um I know there was two girls fighting. >> Okay. >> And um we tried to like we actually tried to stop it or whatever told try to diffuse the situation >> and some people put in the situation. And it happened. >> I really feel like, you know what I'm saying? I'm personally like this could have been avoided. >> Were they inside your store? >> No, they follow right there. >> But did they ever come inside your store? >> Yeah, it started it started in the store then came outside. >> They came outside. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> But yeah, like I was saying, >> sir. >> Yeah. >> Some people was pushing the situation. >> Some people was s pitching the situation. >> Okay. So, you're saying he was pushing it? >> You got the video. It was going live >> just for some ratings, for some likes when it shouldn't have been avoided. >> Okay. All right. I tell you what, I'm going to have you We're going to come back over here to my cruiser. >> Well, you are you do you work there, too? >> Yes, sir. You don't want to try to diffuse the situation? >> Okay. Well, tell you what, >> that's one. >> You guys video, you're the one who instigated it after I told him I have a business to run. They was going to leave until they came outside and he pressed the issue. Forget all of that. I diffused it. He started it. He used to see it when you play the tape >> instigating it. >> I blame him. >> And Morgan, where's your cruiser? >> Where's your cruiser? It's over there. >> There's scales there. >> Right here. Yeah. >> I need him to take one of these. One of them. >> Sit behind. You got to sit in the cruising. >> Yes. >> Oh man, I am close to I get nervous. >> You'll be back. >> Just stand. >> Yeah, I'll stand outside. [laughter] >> Okay, cool. >> I'll take one in my car. This car all filled up already. >> All right. I'm close to it. I really don't like being in behind cruisers if you don't mind. Can I just stand on here and just tell you what I know? >> Well, we'll have to have you buy a cruiser cuz we'll got to separate you two. >> Okay, cool. >> Um and then we'll kind of go from there cuz >> what'll happen is we'll have to contact our detectives and they'll kind of make everything >> I'll take Well, no, he's going to be a witness to everything. >> I already have a No, I already got one in my >> Well, he tried. Yeah, I know. >> We'll walk around in my car. It's the one over there by The girl name want to fight >> the girl. Which girl? >> The um whoever's driving the car. The female was in the car with that car. She pushed the girl to fight. She ran over there. She started attacking the girl. >> So I don't know what happened. I don't I didn't even see her pull out nothing to stab her with. But >> okay, >> something happened. >> But they definitely went to instigator of that situation. >> Okay. >> All right. And I was like I like he tried to tell him like go on about your business. Don't be trying to push nothing here. We trying to we just trying to do a smoke shop, you know. Yeah. >> And he they he the one over there he said, "Oh, start going live and instigating." And I'm like, "Bro, why are you doing that?" >> Yeah. Okay. >> You know what I'm saying? >> Yep. >> Because soon as she cuz they were they tried to wait for her to come out the store. They waited right there in the corner like on the store and then she was like soon as she walked out the store he yelled to her to get her. >> Okay. So him and and I take it um the girl that he was with is the one that got that got transported to the hospital. Is that correct? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Okay. >> They was and I ain't going to lie. I'm so sad that I hope our girl is okay. We actually know her. She comes here to the store all the time. She shouldn't have been instigating fights, man. These kids, they do stupid stuff. They think this is video games. >> They do. >> And I was like, "Bro, why are you instigating that? Why, bro?" >> Yeah. >> You sad. >> I I horribly I'm more afraid of kids, but of adults. At least adults make a a good decision. >> Trying to be reasonable, you know? >> But I was like, >> "Bro, I'm not I ain't going to lie." All right. He over there. It kind of upset me cuz he over there doing all that. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. I know it's just guilt cuz he the one that instigated. >> Yeah. Cuz this is what happens when kids fight. >> When adults fight, they usually kick the crap out of each other, shake hands, and say, "Hey, see you later." >> Most times adults is too they too old. We don't got enough. We'll talk it out. Like what's the point of keep >> trying to do all the extra movement and wrestling and stuff and not during the time of co time to breathe. >> Yeah. Yeah. [sighs] >> But yeah. >> Do you guys have any video outside? >> Yeah, we do. >> Okay. >> Wow. >> You see them little domes right there >> on the top right by the light. Yeah. AJ got one and we got one. >> Okay. >> While the police were still gathering evidence, they noticed a car matching the description that the killer left in right next to the crime scene. >> I'm off. Sergeant Goodrich, Columbus Division of Police. What's your name, buddy? >> Shut the car down for me. Okay. >> Okay. All right. Good deal, boss. Hey, listen. We just had an incident happen over here and it happened to be happened to be a silver car that was involved and then you drove around slow, right? You feel me? So, >> all right, boss. Good deal. Yep. Have a good night. Thanks. >> I can I can >> No, you're good, buddy. You're good to go. It's not It's not you. We have a suspect description. It's definitely not. You're not You don't have to be sorry. You didn't do anything wrong. Thanks for stopping, bud. Have a good night. Briana was still in hiding, but she didn't go too far. She was still in her home trying to get rid of the evidence. She'd cleaned the knife used in the attack, [music] and her clothes were in the wash. But before the cycle ended, the police were outside her front door. >> So, here she is. She's not been padded, >> so I want to You'll want to take care of that. >> This is her cell phone. It's in airplane mode. >> Yeah, if you if you could, that'd be fantastic. >> It's in airplane mode. Do you have anything sharp on you? >> Anything I need to know about? >> Just my pocket. >> Just what? >> Okay. Okay, >> I'm going to need to hold your view. Okay, >> and I just say when you get this back, I'll you'll have this back, too. Okay. >> All right, come on this way. And I'll push up in there. Feel me? Radio to car 60. >> I'm going to need you to start to 231 231 Penoke Court which is in Westerville and you're going to meet 63 and 12 up there. >> The girl everyone was looking for didn't run. She opened the door. She wanted to speak to the detectives herself. According to her, there was more to the story than the video evidence showed. She wasn't the attacker, but the victim. >> I know you were involved in an incident earlier tonight um up there at Columbus Square and then you went home and police officers came and basically put you in a car and drove you up here. So, we want to be able to talk to you about that, but we also want to we have to be able to do that because they put you in a car and kind of brought you here and kind of this facility and police headquarters. You can't just walk out. All right. So, just kind of I guess start from just where you were at earlier tonight, >> who you're with, um kind of what you were doing, sort of stuff. Hey. Um, well, me and my friend left my house, I would say, around like 8:45 and we were hanging out all night. >> Did he come pick you up? >> Mhm. >> And we went to the area at the square. >> Mhm. So, there were 161. >> Mhm. To get drinks and stuff. >> Why did you guys choose that one? That's not real close to Westerville. >> We always go there. That's just the spot we've gone for years. And we walk in and I'm grabbing my drinks and stuff and I hear two girls voices, the ones that don't like me. And I ignore it. I'm on the phone with my brother. I have my brother on the phone and eat it beside me. We grab our drinks and walk up to check out and they see me and they just just start running their mouth. Them >> who are the girls? It was McKenzie Adrien, Leah Colbertson, and I don't know who the dude was, >> but he was definitely the loudest. But they just kept instigating, trying to get me to fight them, and I was like, "You're not worth it." And you're not worth it. I'm done. I'm not doing it. And even the guy working had told them to get out. And they said they were going to wait for me outside. >> What is this all stuff like? What's the animosity? Uh Halia used to be a really good friend of mine >> and then I found out a lot that like she's just a really bad person. So I stopped being friends with her and my friend stopped talking to her >> and then after that she pretty much just went crazy like saying she was going to kill us and slash his tires and do all these things and like she does to most people. There's a few people out there that she's done that to. >> Slash your tires and that. I don't know specifically if she has actually slashed them on tires, but she threatens a lot of people to kill them. And so, um, the guy working at the smoke shop, we were checking out. He checked us out and then he was like, "Wait, I'm going to make sure they leave." So, he walks out and he looks, it looks like he's just standing there. So, I think he told them to leave. And then when we walk out, they were by a jeep. I think his name was a silver jeep. >> Mhm. >> And they're screaming at me. And then the dude tells Halia to run up on me. And she's walking up and I keep telling her, "I'm not fighting you. Back up." Said, "You're not worth it." Keep telling her to back up. And I get my knife out in my hand and I'm holding it. I said, "Back up." And she attacks me. She first slapped me. She was pushing me. Well, before that, yeah, I was trying to like push her away from me, but the other guy said was yelling at him. Don't have to touch her or else he was going to do something to him. And I just kept backing up and then she just attacked me and I don't know what exactly happened but I went like this and then she dragged me by my hair on the ground and like there was just blood in my eyes. I couldn't see anything. But I didn't I don't think I hit her or anything cuz I was on the ground getting blood out of my eyes. >> I I had no idea what was going on. I was just in shock at that point. No. No. Are you hurt at all? >> No. I got a little cut right here. I think that's from her. But >> you felt like my head and everything. I don't feel anything. That's mostly where she was hitting the right in the back of my head. >> Back of your head. >> So, do you normally carry a knife? Uh, sometimes when I'm in areas I don't trust, I do. >> Um, how often do you carry a knife? >> Um, I usually bring it every day to work. So, five days a week. I have it at work with me. I use it at work. >> It's called Midwest Sealant Supply. So, when I'm opening boxes, that's I use it. >> That's what you use. >> And then when you go out to different places, you carry it with you. Have you ever pulled it on anyone? >> No. >> This was the first time you pulled it? >> Yes. >> Um, did Helia have any Did she have a knife? >> I don't think so. >> Did you see one? >> I didn't see one. >> Okay. And she never indicated that she had a weapon or a knife or anything like that. >> No. They were screaming at me, all of them. So, I couldn't really >> She just kept saying that what she was going to do to me. That's all I remember. >> She was just saying that she was going to fight you and beat you up. >> Mhm. She threatened to Well, obviously she threatened to kill Mimi. >> Mhm. What did she say at night or earlier when you guys were out there? What was she saying to you? >> Oh, um, she kept saying that pretty much I was a because I wouldn't fight her. And I just kept saying, "It's not worth it. You're not worth it." because who she was with, she's my brother's baby mama, if that makes sense. And >> she's already taken my niece from me once and I'm not allowed to see her. So, I really didn't want any issues because she already took my niece away and I wasn't trying to fight, but she kept saying that she was going to hurt me. >> Do you think it had >> was something with Kenzie? I don't know. >> Well, you think it was just I don't know. She She was really amped up and I have no idea why. With me even saying, "I'm not fighting you. I'm not fighting you." She was just amped up and they were instigating. >> So, before he blows like any hitting or anything like that, you you pull the knife out and hold it to your side, right? That's what away from. >> Was it open or shut? open. >> Okay. Is it a knife you have to We haven't seen the knife. Is the knife you It has a sheath or is it like a pocket knife or >> It's like a pocket knife. It's >> like folds. >> Mhm. >> Okay. So then once you pulled it out, you open it up immediately. >> Uh, no, it wasn't immediate. >> Okay. >> But I had it there and then when she kept getting closer, that's when I opened it. >> Okay. Do you remember swinging the knife at her? >> Not really. when you >> It all happened like really fast. >> Yeah. >> Um, now did you do you remember did you swing the knife at her as you were backing up or going forward? >> I think I was backing up because I was trying to put I think I was [clears throat] putting space in between us by doing that. >> It all happened pretty quick. >> Yeah. Did you know they were going to be at the smoke shop? >> No idea. >> Just a random. >> I didn't even know the cars or anything. It was just very random. >> Ever seen them there, Julia or Kenzie or >> at the smoke shop? >> The last time I saw Hali at the smoke shop, I was with her and that was probably four or five months ago maybe or whenever October was. I think that's when we stopped being friends was in October or September. [clears throat] And then I've never seen Kenzie there before. I heard she went there, but I never saw her. >> They just kind of like a hangout type place. >> No, I don't usually hang out there. I don't know. They were there for a while, I think, because they were just standing there talking when we walked in. Yeah, we just went in to get drinks and because we were about to head back to my house and then afterwards what what all happened um with you and I called my mom on the way home. Well, my brother was on the phone so he was already in his truck. he was going to head to me because he was worried. And I told him just to head home cuz I was going to head home. I called my mom, told her what happened. I got home and explained it better to them and I showered and I just was in my room. >> What uh what did you do with the clothes and the knife? >> Um the clothes I threw them on the ground. I think my brother put them downstairs in the laundry room. and knife. I don't remember who I handed it to. I just wanted it all away from me. So, >> you don't know what happened to us though? >> Yeah. I don't know where they put it or anything. >> But you took it into the house. >> So, during the the the fire when she was hitting you, what what happened with a knife during that time? Uh, it had dropped on the ground. >> Okay. >> It was no longer in my hand. >> Okay. And then did you pick the knife up >> after they went back? >> Finally. Yeah. Let go of me. Yeah. [snorts] >> I think I left the stuff on the ground. >> Oh, the stuff from the store. >> Mhm. Did you know she had been cut at that point? >> Um, I didn't know if it was me or her cuz they were yelling, saying that they were laughing, saying that she made me bleed. So, I was like, maybe there's a cut on me, but then I was looking all over myself. When we got in the car, I was like, it's I don't think it's me. Cuz she was just kept I couldn't see anything cuz my hair was just everywhere. hair was in your face and all that, but then you realized that if it wasn't you, it had been her. >> Mhm. >> Once you were in the car. >> Yeah, cuz as soon as we got in the car, we left. We didn't there. Yeah. >> Yeah. Wanted to know. >> Did you call the police at all? >> No, I didn't know what to do. I thought police would come to my house like fast and then when they didn't I just went to bed. >> Has anyone called you from that [music] group or any messages or anything about >> No, but [music] he had got a few like new caller IDs. >> Okay. This entire time, Briana was under the impression that she was brought in for questioning for a fight gone wrong and that Halia was pressing charges. What she didn't know is that Halo was in no condition to do that. >> Just so that you know, um, Talia was taken to the hospital and that's where she she died. She didn't survive her injuries. So, with all the people that we interviewed and the video that we recovered, we're charging you with murder, >> no sort of self-defense or anything. >> Essentially, it'll be up to the prosecutor's office. We'll present the case to them and then if they decided that they want us to present to the grand jury, we'll present to the grand jury. If you get indicted for it, then it'll go to trial. It'll go to court and then you'll be able to present a self-defense claim at that point. Does that make sense? You make questions for me at this time. Do you want me to call your mom right now or do you want to call her? You'll get a call when you get to the county to county jail. >> I'm not going home. >> No, you're going to jail cuz we're charging you with the murder. You'll go to county jail. Uh tomorrow you'll go to court for your first arraignment. they'll set your bond and then at that point we have 10 days to present the case to the grand jury for indictment. Um if we don't do that, you have to be released. Um if you don't postpond um if you if we do present to the grand jury and they what's called a no bill, if they decline charges, then the case is dismissed at that point. Um that's kind of the process right now. So, you'll go right now some uh patrol officers will take you down to the county jail. You'll get slated down there under the one charge of murder. Tomorrow, you'll go to court where they'll set your bond. So, when you do get down to county, you'll you'll we'll have access to a phone if you want to call family then. >> I would like to call [music] you. Okay. As soon as possible. >> Yeah. By the time Briana faced the judge, [music] the story was already public property. A text Briana had sent in anger made her look guilty. Social media called her a teen killer. But inside that courtroom, the full story finally came to light. >> There's been some comments about text messages that were sent in this case. I think that it's important to know [music] what the state thinks that the text messages demonstrate throughout this case. The text messages demonstrate that there was an ongoing feud already between the defendant and the victim of this case. Judge, there's no way to mince words here. There was bad blood between the two. The text messages demonstrates that Miss Barzini was mad at her. She was mad at Holio. It demonstrates that [music] the fuse but that to get angry between the victim and the defendant was short. And that anger built up and took Hali's life. [music] Her defense attorney laid out the months of harassment, the threats, the messages, and the confrontations. [music] Every piece of evidence showed the same thing. This was a panic reaction from someone who felt trapped. Mr. Barage, who was a friend of Miss Culver's had the opportunity and took that opportunity to video Miss Culverson as Miss Culverson was waiting for Briana to come out of the store. I like >> Halia Halia. What you about to do, bro? [screaming] >> Where she at, bro? Where she at, bro? >> She's [snorts] scared, bro. [laughter] >> She's scared. At least you should drag her out the store. Buzz, >> I'm outside. >> [snorts] [laughter] >> Like what? >> No, we waiting right here till you get your ones. I've been waiting to see her get beat for a minute, bro. >> Talking about cocaine. Who was in there DOING [laughter] what that clearly shows? >> There's a significant period of time where Miss Culston is waiting. Um, Miss Brianna comes out with drinks in her hand. There is a glass door, but there's posters or pictures or whatever covering that. I think it aptly disputes the fact that this was a mutual combat. Let's get into a fist fight. And then fist fight got out of hand. And at that time, uh, Rihanna had pulled the knife. In watching and reviewing the video that was played uh about the actual event a little while ago, uh and I mentioned in the sensing memorandum, I counted no less than 30 steps that my client took backwards. She pulled a knife from her pocket and took 15 more steps backwards away from Miss Culver. She didn't want to engage at all. This was more an assault on behalf of Miss Culver than a mutual fist fight. And at the time, as Mr. Bear said, she's afraid. She was in fear. And she was absolutely afraid. When her friend tried to jump in and help, Mr. Bears threatened him. >> Where's Mr. Bear? He should have been charged. >> Yes. >> He encouraged all this. Yeah. >> Sit down. >> Nobody stopped it. And and and there were people there that could have said, "Hey, you're my best friend. You don't need to do this. Let's stop it. Stop." They could have stopped it at any time, and nobody did. Instead, they they videoed it for content to post later and be funny or famous. Um, and they did so knowing that an assault was going to take place. And that probably should anger us more than almost anything else. But that said, um, as I've mentioned, uh, this this she was in fear. She was backing up. Uh the evidence is clear that at the time after she was slapped, don't forget that she had been pushed first and threatened and slapped and then she went forward and lunged at Miss Culmerson. >> The Snapchat footage made it clear Halia was the first one to attack [music] and Briana's swing came only after being cornered. What happened next was tragic, but it wasn't first-degree murder. Briana plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence. [music] She told the court she never meant to kill her former friend only to stop her from [music] coming closer. But Halia's family didn't see it that way. They saw Briana as the aggressor. >> 472 [music] days. 11,328 hours. That's how long's been gone. [music] But who's counting? From the moment that we received [music] the devastating news, I found myself thrust into a whirlwind of emotions, shock, and so many new unknown responsibilities. Because in the week in the wake of tragedy, a mother must a mother must summon the courage to [music] face practical challenges that no parent should have to confront. Identifying and preparing your child's lifeless body. Planning [music] a funeral. Planning a funeral for our daughter felt so surreal. What will she wear? What casket? Flowers, [music] music, wear, headstone, obituary, transportations, accommodations. I'm sure I left a million things out. Trapped in a nightmare. I couldn't wake up. I can't wake up. No way to escape. Yet I had to stay strong. Strong for my husband crumbling under the weight of the grief. And strong for our children who are trying to understand. Trying to make [music] sense of losing their sister. Supporting my family through their grief became my sole purpose. I [snorts] listened to their cries. I held them close as they cried and screamed and tried to answer the unanswerable questions about why this happened. I'd rather be standing at her wedding giving a speech or her graduation. [snorts] But I'm here and I know Helita and I know her killer. The past six years of my life, I've dealt with the her killer, her family. And when I finally thought I was getting away from these people and I finally got my family away from these people, Halia's killer did this to the most important person in my life. That night, I felt I felt a part of my soul, more like all of it, left when Elia left. >> [snorts] >> I relive March 27th [music] of 2023 in my head every day. All I see is Halia in my arms and I'm screaming on the phone with 911 telling them to hurry. Then I wake up and it's 5:30 a.m. in the morning and it's the next morning and it was my dream every night since I lost her. Helia never got another birthday or Christmas or Thanksgiving. No more holidays. But her killer got to spend every holiday last year since Talia's been killed freely and with her family. I wish this wasn't what I was doing reading a statement. I'd rather be sitting there every day through court and talking on trial a million times and writing and saying my statement to you. I wish I was reading a speech at her wedding seeing her kids get her [snorts] nursing degree she always wanted or even living and talking to her when we get old in a nursing home. I hope you understand who Leah was. She was an absolutely beautiful that soul that she had always wanted to help. Her heart was so big she could give it [music] to anyone. [snorts] I miss her every day. She She was my alarm in the morning, my personal therapist when I needed someone to talk to, and my little sister in my eyes. I could tell you about Leah for hours, but I couldn't make you listen that long. I hope that her killer gets the maximum sentence. I hope you realize or understand someone who was really was in this world. a daughter, a sister, a cousin, [music] a friend, a student, a co-orker, a granddaughter, a niece, an aunt. She was someone's child that got taken too soon, and she is now forever 17 years old. >> But when Briana finally spoke, the courtroom went silent. [music] >> I never once thought I would be here today with these charges. I also have never been one to start a [music] fight. I'm always a person to back away from confrontation. Not a day goes by that this [music] incident hasn't been on my mind. I understand and feel for the victim's family as I know the harm I have caused them is indescribable. I also feel for my own family as the situation has caused them a lot of pain. I can understand and appreciate the harm that I have caused now. I will be living with this guilt the rest of my [music] life. I took a life and I understand the victim's family will suffer for the rest of their lives as will my family for what I've put them through. I pray and will continue to pray for all parties involved. Briana was sentenced to 3 years in prison for the involuntary manslaughter of Halia Colbertson. Halia's friends who egged her on and film the [music] whole thing suffered no consequences.
