That makes no sense. >> That's true. Shoplifting is a serious crime. When they're caught, some run. >> Hey, back police. >> Others fight. >> And a few beg. >> I'm really sorry. I'm ready to pay for this. >> These are America's wildest shoplifting stories. Home Depot security. seen enough. A woman with a big black purse stuffed it full of merchandise. But when she saw the security is onto her, she dropped everything and bailed. Store security called the cops. >> Okay. What's going on? >> She she walked out of the merchandise from Depot on APS. She's inside the store right now. >> Okay. Did you get your property back? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Are you just wanting a report? You want her trespassed? I want her arrested and everything cuz once they go past the door that's theft. >> Well, actually it's once they conceal it, it's shopping. >> True, true, true. But for our rules, they have to get out the door and >> we can make the stop. It's theft. >> She had tried to play the game and security wanted it taken to the end. >> Did she set her whole purse down or she just put the items down? >> She opened it up, tossed it all while I was on the phone with 911 >> and said, "I'm not coming back in with you." And I said, "Well, I'm already on phone 911, so this got to go to the end." Her moves weren't sloppy either. She kept putting her jacket on and off to confuse the staff. She also had a big hat on, hiding her hair and face, but the security guard knew the drill. He kept track, got a solid description, and stayed on the line with 911 while she dumped the goods. >> Going to step in there and get her. >> I figure we'll just wait till she comes out. Is that her right there? >> Uh, she got red hair. >> You said white female. >> Uh, she kept taking her jacket off and put it on a black jacket. She's got a red, white, and blue shirt. >> The officers hung [music] back at first, but when she didn't come out, they walked in. >> I mean, she's not out here. So, >> no luck. She wasn't [music] there. So, they checked the lady's restroom. That too [music] came up empty. She had vanished just like that. Is there a back door? Yeah, but is there one where an alarm won't go off? She >> open the door. >> Only place left to search was the warehouse. It was authorized personnel only. And the doors back there had alarms. >> I mean, I don't think that she went back here, but she didn't come back here, did she? >> It was then he heard the alarm. >> Is that alarm going on? cuz I saw her where I saw her front end. >> I bet she did then. >> Yeah. >> She had slipped out the back while the officers waited for her at the front. >> 591. Staff believe she went out her back door. >> 517 591. I got her out here out back. She's going to be behind Best Buy. >> Sure enough, the officer spotted her wandering outside, pretending like nothing had happened. She wasn't running. just strolling like a regular customer. >> I'm good. How are you? >> Where you going? >> Trying to find a ride. >> Yeah. Trying to get out of here, huh? >> She was just looking for her ride, but the show was over. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> I Why? >> You're under shoplifting. Drop the cigarette. >> I wasn't shoplifting. Prove it. >> Why are you doing this? >> I just told you. >> I'm not I wasn't shoplifting. You understand what you can steal items in a in anything on your purse in a bag or anything like that? You're shoping. >> What? What? What am I? Check me. >> Okay. Will you search her? I'm going to go look where I just saw her at. >> Okay. >> See if she dropped a purse or anything. Do what? >> Hank wants her back over there. >> Cool. >> The male officer left Samantha with the female officer for the search. >> I don't even have anything to conceal. >> You had a purse? >> It's not up for discussion. Let me just tell you that. You know where we do discussions at court. >> The officer escorted [music] her inside for the search. >> Sorry about this y'all. >> This wasn't her first rodeo. She was already out on parole and now that she got [music] caught shoplifting. >> So you realize you are going to jail today, right? >> I don't see why. >> Okay. >> I don't have anything. >> Is your name Samantha? >> Yes. And I have to go see my PO at 3:30. Well, your PO is going to get a call from me telling me telling them where you're at. So, >> how can they press charges on me when I I I don't even have anything. >> Listen, like I said, it's not up for discussion. I take a lot of shoplifting from Home Depot. They've got camera footages. They've got it all. All right. >> The officer walked her toward the exit, apologizing to shoppers as they went. >> Sorry about the commotion, y'all. Y'all have a good day. You, too. For a moment, it looked like the scene was wrapped [music] up. Little did they know, it will soon turn into a chase through rain, rivers, and mud. >> And you know, it's funny. You told me that you had a ride picking you up, but I was told that your vehicle's in the parking lot. >> I don't have a vehicle. >> Okay, cool. >> The merchandise she dumped was sitting right where she left it. Between that and the footage, the charges weren't going anywhere. I didn't find your stuff out there, so I hope it doesn't get ruined. >> I don't have anything. >> Can I talk to >> I was coming over to you, but can you just ID and make sure that this is her? >> Yeah. >> Yep, that's her, >> please. >> Okay. >> Nope. >> You said she had on a black jacket and a purse. >> She kept taking a black jacket off and on, off and on. >> But then a purse hat. >> Yes, she did. >> A big black purse. >> Big black purse. There wasn't any out there. >> It's probably in that uh Oh, I bet the dumpster. >> I ain't digging. >> Did she go out back? >> By this point, Samantha knew her only chance was to come clean. And that's exactly what she did. >> Hey, what's your name? >> Where's your purse at? So I can get it back to you. >> I got rid of it. >> You don't want it back? >> No. Please. >> All right. >> Please. Please. The decision had already been made and parole or not, she had rolled the dice and lost. >> You want to do this over at Home Depot or drive? >> You can. I mean, >> normally whenever police catch them, they don't want to move away from wherever we're at. >> Well, I'll worry about that. We'll go We'll go over there. >> Case closed. Or so they thought. There is another shoplifter inside. >> I got someone packing stuff. You can choose them or them. >> Okay, K. >> Okay, >> you got her. >> Before anyone could react, a man [music] bolted out the front doors and into the parking lot. >> Is that him? >> Conway, can you open another shoplifting, please? >> One shoplifter was in cuffs. The other was now on the run. The simple call had just doubled in size. Finally, I'll be in close pursuit going left across the parking lot. >> Hey, stop. Police stop. Stop right now. Hey. Hey. Stop the car. Open the door. Go away. He's leaving a vehicle. 786 waiting on David Henry. North across the parking lot towards Best Buy. The chase now spilled [music] from pavement into something much bigger. >> Rain slowed the officers just enough for him to stretch the gap. Hey 438. It's blue. It's either a Tahoe Yukon. >> It's a larger blue SUV. >> All I saw is a white male. Looked like a blue jacket. As soon as I laid eyes on him, he took off running. The windows are tinted on the uh SUV. >> Responding officer lost sight of him in the rain, hoping another unit would catch him. units that will have damage to the back passenger side. >> Sure enough, another patrol saw him clocking him at 70 on 286 Edward John almost. We got speed approximately 70 medium traffic. >> Medium traffic. The SUV blasted out of town heading towards the woods. >> All right, still crossing hollow on 286. Turn it off. He's going to keep going till he gets the main. Then the word dropped over the radio. The suspect might be armed. >> Are y'all past the dead end? >> Tell me. I think they just said he has a gun. >> The chase had just gone from dangerous to deadly. Other officers reached the woods first. They spotted the SUV plowing through a small river. But his gamble failed. The engine gave out. >> Keep going down, Barrel. Get out of the damn car. >> Get out of the car. [panting] >> Negative. Get out of the car. >> Okay, I'm going to grab you up. >> You make a move at home, I will blow you away. I'm not even playing. I >> give me another hand. >> Oh my god, my leg was up. >> Get up. >> Get up. >> I can't get up. >> Use your knees. >> I can't get up. >> I look like I'm on a plug, you stupid ass. The responding officer finally caught up. >> Yep, that's him. >> Is it him? >> That's him. >> We'd be back from Tahoe. And then us Bo Duke through a pond to finish it off. It was actually pretty badass. >> He's my new least favorite person. >> How do I know you? And why do I know you? >> Look at you. >> No, we ago. >> How much further down here are they? >> Yeah, mine's up there. You want the keys? I was going to go see if it was the same car from Home Depot. >> You stop working at Home Depot today, too. >> See how much you had a drink today. >> Come on, buddy. >> His name was [music] Jeffrey, and he wasn't new to this life. He tried to cover for Samantha, but instead [music] ended up with his face on body cams, caught in the act as her getaway driver. The SUV was stolen. With that alone, he was already in deep trouble. Add the shoplifting, the chase, the wreck, and the fight in the woods, and the charges stacked high. Secondderee battery, fleeing, shoplifting, and firstderee criminal mischief. Samantha, meanwhile, had her own parole problem, and walked away with a shoplifting charge that was enough to send her back behind bars. While Samantha and Jeffrey were getting booked, another pair had their own plan in motion. Different town, different store, same bad idea. On March 19th, 2024, Hoboken police were called to a shopright. Loss prevention had two women held in the back. >> How you doing? >> Date of birth next to it. Just this one seat combined. Yes. Okay. >> The store had already flagged them. Facial recognition picked them out. They had tried this before. >> They're they're repeat offenders. Not this time. >> Repeat. >> Yeah. They didn't get caught last time cuz they got spooked and just dropped them right out. >> Gotcha. >> This time cameras caught everything. They paid for two small [music] items, then walked out with 27 more without scanning. Just so everybody knows about Canon. Okay. >> Okay. Uh we just like came out to purchase a Pepsi outside Pepsi. Everything was there, right? >> Yes, we were. >> We forgot the Pepsi to take inside. We going to build like few things and we came out to take Pepsi. Going to build all the cart. >> Yeah. >> In between he came. >> Security then filled in the blanks. >> You took the card out with you. Um, basically what they did is put everything. They had everything outside the bag and then they had everything outside of the >> No, they [laughter] had everything outside the car like outside bag >> and then they went into the house and was there. >> Wait, do you have the footage? >> Let's just watch it together. >> Yes, the footage was there showing it all. >> They brought the outside bags in is what you're saying. And they put stuff in the bags. >> Yeah, they put in the reusable bag right there. And it's empty. Both women had walked in with their own bags, slipped items inside, and thought nobody would notice. That's concealment. >> Are these on you? >> No. >> Uh, no. >> How old are you? >> I'm 20. >> And you? >> 22. >> Okay. Both turned out to be graduate students from Steven's Institute of Technology. And just like that, once the game was up, they wanted to pay and go. >> And we are ready to pay the full. >> That's not how it works. You guys are going to get arrested. If it shows that you guys are walking out, whatever. >> So, they paid half of it. They're saying right now for two it >> two items and then walked out with the rest of them. >> Okay. The math was simple. Two items paid, 27 not. The total came to $15561. That kept it under felony level. Almost like they'd planned it that way. >> We are not. We paid for few. We paid few amount. >> Okay. So why would you pay for some and not pay for the other? >> I have limited balance in my >> We do have We need to get the pet. >> So you only paid for some things in your cart and some things were unpaid. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Okay. And then you walked out. Not walked out. We walked out. We're going to take paper outside. Outside big bottles right there. We're going to We can't have that. >> We're going to pay everything >> and you were going to come back in to pay. Yeah. >> Okay. Well, you walked out. >> You want to? >> Wait. We do have an >> What Pepsi are you talking about? >> Sorry. >> What Pepsi are you talking about? >> Pepsi bottles at at the entrance. Entrance. We have few lace and chips kind of thing, right? >> Outside. >> What is she talking about >> in in the lobby? You guys have chips and Pepsi out. >> Oh, I do. So, you went outside with the cart after paying. But why did you pay for a couple things and then >> because we forgot the money? >> You forgot the entire items that you also got. >> Yeah. >> I'm sorry. That's not believable. >> So, if you didn't have money to pay for it all at one time, where's your money going to come from? >> I have. >> She have. >> I have. >> So, then why didn't you pay when you paid for the other things? >> We bought to went to bring a Pepsi. We forgot the items which are outside. >> That makes no sense. >> I'm serious. It it that makes absolutely no sense. Just so that you know that sounds crazy. You're making up excuses. You just admit that you were you tried to pay for half and leave for half. That's what it is. >> If you if you had the money, you should have paid for everything. Put it in your car, came back in for the >> account. She have money. >> It doesn't matter. There's people that steal that have $7, $800 on them. >> Yeah. He said, >> "You guys have done this before here though." >> I am not. I said they not. >> Okay. But then the security guard told the cops this was nothing new. That's their usual move. >> This was a guy [music] >> and it was never reported. >> I was I never got reported cuz I was going home. >> Did it show them paying for half and then leaving? >> Yes. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Okay. So, >> had this been the first Slipmouth, maybe the cops would have let it slide with a warning. But this wasn't a mistake. It was a system. One they clearly understood. And notice how they kept the total under $300. That wasn't luck. That was planned. >> So So what happened? So what happens is you paid for half in your cart that was unpaid items. >> No, that's not how it works. You're getting arrested. You're coming down to the police station. You're going to sign a form. You are no longer allowed to come to shop right. You're not welcome here anymore. >> So there's no there's Yeah, there's no debate. >> First and then you guys will have >> there's no debate. You guys are getting arrested. We are going to handcuff you. We are going to search your person. Anything that's on you, we're gonna put Excuse me, I'm talking. >> We'll take your information. We'll bring you down to headquarters. We're going to type up charges. We're going to send it to the courts. Sometimes the courts will let you go free with a court date. Sometimes you go to jail. That's up to them to decide. >> Now, the women seem to realize talking their way out wasn't an option anymore. That's when they suddenly remembered they did in fact have ID. >> Uh, we have an ID, like college ID card. >> Okay. Okay. That's okay. I'll take your information. You have a social security number? >> No. >> Okay. So, we'll take your information. We'll run we'll we'll try to get as much information from you and and get you in the system. Have you been arrested before? >> Even though Shopright's system flagged them as repeat offenders. They'd been careful enough to avoid getting caught until now. Not like Samantha. Her past came back to bite her right away. >> So, most likely you'll be able to leave today after we do your paperwork on a summon, which is a paper date. We'll give you a court date. Okay. But for now, what we need you to do is sign the papers saying that you're not going to return papers in front of you. Sign them with your name and we're going to arrest you. We're going to bring you to >> this is what they paid for. Okay. Everything that you paid for these two items. >> You understand that? >> So, please, ma'am, sign the papers. >> And then this we can take these that's theirs and they're going to find this one either way. >> They had pulled this scam cleanly so far, but signing those papers meant admitting what they had done. And that was the last thing they wanted. You're you're being recorded. So you sign the paper say that you will not come to the shop ever again. Please sign the paper. Uh >> do I need to write my name? >> Just for the the signature >> with the exes. Yep. He himself. >> They had walked into the store at 4:08 p.m. and tried to sneak out by 5:05. Now here they were nearly an hour later trying every trick to make it all disappear. >> No, that's not how it works. Unfortunately, we have to arrest you. Okay? It's there's no it's not like a >> we'll give you a chance. That's not how it works. >> Double charges. >> That doesn't matter. You can offer as much money as you want, but you still have to get arrested for the charges for the crime you committed. That's not how it works. You can't just >> You shouldn't pay for it. >> Can you please stand for me? >> We don't want to make this hard or difficult. >> No amount of bargaining or cash would get them a walk away card. >> Stand. You sit. Sit. We'll do one at a time. >> You have anything on you or no? >> Sorry. >> Anything in your pocket? >> Pocket. No. >> Okay. Uh-huh. Put your phone. I'm going to put your phone in this bag. [snorts] >> Okay. Is that okay? >> Can I just put this over? Can >> you stand up for me? You have anything in your pockets? >> No, I don't have more books. Do >> you guys live in Hoboken? >> Uh, New York State Heights. >> Okay. So, you live in Jersey City. >> How'd you get here today? A car. >> You walked from the heights. Came here. >> Yeah. >> Okay. You don't have any. >> Both women were loaded into the same [music] patrol car. On the way to the station, the officer told them what would happen next. >> So, we're bringing you to the police headquarters. We're going to get inside. >> We're going to um just search you one more time. I know we just searched you in there, but we have to do a more thorough search. Um, then we're going to fingerprint you and photograph you. You're going to give us your information. We're going to search the database to see if there's any charges before on you. Um, and then we're going to charge you with shoplifting. And then you will um that complaint will be sent to the court system and the courts will let us know whether that you will be released after [music] today with a court date and a summon a charge or if you will be sent to the jail for the night. If you are sent to county um you will be brought to Hudson County Correctional Facility where you will stay for the rest of today into tomorrow and usually you see a judge in the morning. It might be a misdemeanor, but the consequences of shoplifting don't let anyone off easy. >> But I I just want you to know the the guy as soon as you walked into ShopRight, your your face on on their face recognition for shoplifterss, it pinged. So a couple weeks ago, you guys he saw you stealing >> shoplifting. Well, whether you say no or not, I believe him. He caught you guys shoplifting, but you dropped the stuff and ran before he could approach you. So you're already in their system as flat. >> So this happened before. So whether you're saying today you were going to pay for it or not, this happened before. >> It was at a different time, right? >> No. >> Both women were taken to the Haboken police station. They went through the full process, [music] searched, fingerprinted, and photographed. Hours later, they walked out, not free, but holding a summons for shoplifting. One case closed [music] at Shopright, but the very next call waiting for the cops was bigger. This time it wasn't chips and soda. It was over $1,000 in Target merchandise. On July 3rd, 2025 in Illinois, Target staff called the police after spotting a woman pushing out over $1,000 worth of unpaid goods. >> Good afternoon. >> Um, we took the in custody right now. branded in the office. I can take you over that way. >> Okay. >> Is this all this stuff? >> It's all of this. Yeah. >> All of this. >> It's a total of 105359. >> 1053. 1,000. >> Yeah. 5359. >> Jesus. Okay. >> Got the last one was 700. >> The officer wasn't rushing. First, he wanted to hear the story from security of before talking to her. Hello. What's up? What's up? >> What do we got? >> Seen her slap at all and just walk out without pain. >> Okay. >> All right. >> It was the oldest trick in the book. But this time, Target had her boxed in. Then he talks [music] to the woman who told him her whole story in a single breath. >> What's your name? >> Grace. >> Grace. All right. Grace, what's going on with all this stuff here? >> I'm really homeless. I try to walk out just to at least have some [ __ ] to my name and be able to chill out and I don't know. My phone just got broke. My wallet just got stolen. I came from a situation at my boyfriend's house. I tried to bring my mom's house. She ended up having everyone come to my room and steal from me. So, I headed down to Chicago with an old friend. Me and them ended up getting into a fight. So, now I'm here. I'm trying to make ends meet. I stink. All I wanted was panties and socks to begin with this [ __ ] But you know, I would I was going to put all that [ __ ] into a suitcase and make my way. >> She tells her sad story to the cops. In most cases, that trick [music] doesn't work, but today is her lucky day. The officer radioed into his sergeant, hoping he could be lenient. >> So, it's a female um down on her luck. Had a bunch of stuff stolen from her, fighting whatever with boyfriend. Uh they got a receipt of over $1,000 worth, [music] but it's like a whole bunch of just like food items, uh drinks, just miscellaneous stuff that would literally be for a homeless person. It looks like a mat backpack. >> The cops could let this one slide, but only if Target didn't want to press charges. >> All right. What? Uh you guys seen her before? No person here. >> Okay. Um I just call him my sergeant and just wanted to make sure. Do you guys are you guys okay with a local ordinance? >> Um I would be just the fact that if whenever it's a huge amount like this, they want us to press charges like 300 bucks. >> My sergeant's pushing for given the circumstances. Homeless. You guys got the stuff back. uh just given the circumstances. >> That's what I told him over the phone. >> Okay. >> She's cooperative, but [music] obviously >> up to you guys. I'm just letting you know what what he's suggesting we do. >> Again, just running everything by you, letting you know what the orange says and thinks. >> You're okay with that? >> Okay, we'll do that. I'll see what she says. Uh got >> info. Most everything was like food and like Yeah. Like >> So Grace is one lucky girl today. She's going to go scot-free even after committing a felony. >> What all were you buying today? >> Nothing, as you can see. >> I mean, it's a lot of it's a lot of things. >> Yeah, I was going in there. Bunch of electronics. >> A bunch of electronics. Let me see that real quick here because I ain't I ain't touch no motherics. I'm going to try to bring some [ __ ] up in my >> Grace. Grace, don't get [music] loud. All right. >> No, because at the end of the day, >> don't get loud. All right. [music] >> Listen to what he has to say. >> You're trying to push authority on me. I'm not pushing. >> You don't try to make your voice louder than mine when you try to assert dominance. You don't You're not I'm not in your >> It never gets old to see the offender getting offended. >> I'm talking the same tone as I did when I first came in here. Okay. I'm literally reading off this receipt that they have. Everything is categorized. Apparel, electronics, three items, groceries, health, and beauty, home, stationary, and office supplies, and toys. Okay? That's all I'm reading to you. I'm just trying to talk to you. All right? I talked to my sergeant. >> He is more than willing to [clears throat] just charge with a local ordinance. Illinois. >> It's a local ordinance. I don't even know what y'all are talking about. >> I'll explain it to you. Okay. >> Illinois. >> No need to get >> Illinois. Local ordinance is a ticket basically in Rosemont [music] as opposed to you being charged criminally through the courts. All right. This is a felony amount. Not trying to insert dominance. Okay. I think everybody here would agree. I'm talking to you with respect. Not raising my tone. All right. Suggestion is that you cooperate and continue to because you have so far. >> The officer is trying very hard to not charge her. [music] Let's see how difficult it gets for him to do that. >> And again, >> with the store's approval and my sergeant's approval, we can just charge you given the circumstances. Homeless, >> down on your luck. We're not trying to you. Excuse my language. >> Yes, you are. If I go in those streets without some of those supplies, guess what's going to happen to me on that CTA? I'm going to be snatched up and left in a ditch. And then you're going to be the one discovering my body. How are you going to like that one? Young Grace slit open in the middle of a ditch. You don't even recognize my face because of how [ __ ] up I am. So that's why it happens to young girls in the middle of the night in Chicago. Tell me I'm wrong. >> So according to her, by giving her a free pass, she will end up [music] dead on the street for some reason. That's rich. >> All right. Do you want to talk yourself into a felony? >> Not talking myself into anything. I'm being honest. If you don't want to hear the truth, if you want to be brainwashed, >> I'm being straightforward with you. Okay. All right. I'm going to go out to the car, start this, uh, check on DL image. >> Uh, can we cuff her to the bench? Uh, and then I will be back. >> Is she right-handed or left-handed? >> Am I left-handed or right-handed? >> Correct. I am right-handed. Is there any way we can put it on my left though? So I can have these to push in the cups. Please do it. >> Okay. We're not going to put them on that tight. Trust me. Okay. Put them on your left cuz you're right-handed. I'm going to go back to the car. Wait for the positive ID. Basic picture. Um >> and then as long as everything's still the same culture, same route. Okay. All right. I'll be back. >> All she has to do is behave for a few more minutes, but Grace has different plans today. >> Okay. All right. I'll be back. >> You understand that I'm kind of in the corner and kind of standing above me. So, it's a little bit of an attack situation. So, we put stuff step back. There's >> 3 ft between us. >> Well, actually distance is six. Okay. >> Sorry. >> You're going to have to be in close approximately. I might have pneumonia and you're making me uncing comfortable. >> I'm not assaulting nobody because he's coming close. You Why are you stand Why can't you stand back there? >> Would you like me to step back? >> Okay. >> Remember this happening [music] in 2025. So asking for social distancing is like asking for trouble. Yet the officer still gave her the space which he wasn't [music] invading in the first place. >> All right. All right. Grace still trying to confirm your identity. All right. How old are you? >> 25. >> 25. Okay. All right. So, what's going to happen is uh we're going to take you back to the station. We have to fingerprint you to confirm your identity. All right. Are there going to be any issues when we get your fingerprints back? You're not wanted. You're a different name. What's that? >> Not counting on it. Like, are you positive or it's it's a maybe? >> But before they could transport her, they needed to search her. And that's [music] when everything went downhill. >> You guys need anything else from us right now? So, >> we just got to confirm. >> Is there Would you mind patting me down and said no? >> As a female. >> Okay, then y'all legally can't pat me down. >> Yeah, we can't. >> No, that's an invasion of my privacy. I'm a woman who could touch me, grop me in her. >> There's multiple witnesses. Cameras are on. All right. Okay. >> I I just I don't necessarily feel comfortable with the grants on top of you. >> Well, there's a lot of other people present. Obviously, I'm not going to do anything. >> It would just make you feel more comfortable if you had a female deputy on. >> All right. Well, if you don't run now, we're going to run you back. >> Well, sir, I really don't feel comfortable in this position without a female. >> You're going to have to be >> Well, so you're going to assault me. You're going to touch me without my permission. >> Legally do my job. Okay. >> You are legally going to assault me and touch me without my permission. [music] >> Can you stand up for me? Stand up. >> Stand up. >> Stand up. Are you going to make us make you stand up? >> Stand up. Stand up. Don't >> touch me. You about to grop my [ __ ] >> Don't you touch it. Stop it. >> Hey, you're touching my boob. He's trying to grab me. He's trying to get me. >> Stop. Let me out. [screaming] Let me let me get her. If only she had cooperated, she would have walked free today. But now things had gotten way out of hand. >> Any injuries? >> You slap me in my face with your cough. You p >> Well, [music] in reality, it wasn't the cops who slapped her. She accidentally punched herself while resisting. >> Do you injured at all? >> Yes. >> All right, we'll call the medics. Your your wrist back to bruise me. Stop. >> He's going to adjust it. Stop moving. >> I got two grown men on top of me as a young girl. You are hurting me. >> You good? >> When that didn't work, she started [music] screaming. And not just yelling, fullon screaming. >> Stop. Stop. [screaming] Move it out. Calm down. >> Calm down. >> Get the out of me. You [clears throat] >> calm down. >> You bunch of calm down. Calm down. >> You got my one cuff. >> Calm down. >> I can't. >> When you calm down in case >> when you calm down, [laughter] I can death on you. I wish death on you. I wish death on I can adjust it. >> All right. >> It was at this moment the officer realized Grace might need a psychological evaluation. >> Ow. The 515. It's a one. I'm about to get your [ __ ] smacked out of you out of you. You >> okay? Are you going to calm down? >> Are you going to calm down? >> Are you going to calm down? It's a question. Are you going to calm down? >> Too late. >> Are you going to calm down? We're not going to get you up until we're comfortable that you can remain calm. Okay. >> Just go ahead, man. >> And the refuse to speak to. >> Okay. Okay. Which is fine. Still got a job to do. >> She reacted so violently that she ended up cutting her own head. >> You did. >> Is that from her? I think that's from her. >> Okay. >> You bleeding anywhere? >> Yeah. She's got a cut on her face. >> On her face? >> Yeah. Okay. Your eyes are all right. >> Norcon 301. Do we have medicine? >> We have 104. You can advise for psych >> and a female offender bleeding from the face and just document that there was a physical altercation with uh this subject. The cops searched her right there on the ground as she refused to cooperate. Eventually, the paramedics arrived and to her amazement, they too were males. [laughter] We got the pair of legs. You can listen to >> one arm at a time. Lift up. Lift up. >> Roll your side. Roll over. There you go. Okay. Relax. One second. Just relax. One second. Okay. Just relax. >> All right. Can you walk over to the cat? >> Oh my god. We're going to get [laughter] him. We're going to get him. Just take a seat right here. >> All right. Can you stretch out your legs for me? Thank you. >> Sit back. >> It's okay. >> Here, I'm going to borrow that leg really quick. >> Just so relax just some straps for safety. >> We don't we don't have a woman paramedic available right now. Okay. >> Hey, what's your name? I need a girl. I need a girl. >> We don't have a female parame. >> She was taken to the hospital and right at the very end, the sergeant showed up. >> So, where who got struck where? >> Uh, didn't really I I don't think I really got struck. >> She just kind of slammed me backwards. She pushed her legs up totally the wall, but >> I don't think she really struck me or anything. >> Yeah. >> I'm trying to see if we need to challenge her. That's why I messed up. >> Yeah. >> If anything, I'm I would think resisting I didn't >> break. >> Grace was arrested and charged with felony theft, resisting arrest and obstruction. With Grace out of the picture, the spotlight focused on a different target [music] story, one that revolved around an Indian woman and her unusual way of handling checkout. So, picture this. It's May 1st, 2025. A woman walks into a Target in Alangquin, Illinois. Nothing unusual so far. People do that every day. But here's the twist. She doesn't [music] just shop, she stays. Not an hour, not two. Try seven. Seven hours inside Target. By the end, her [music] cart isn't just full, it's stuffed. And instead of heading to the checkout, she makes for the exit. That's when Target staff step in, take one look at the cart, and call the cops. >> I'm working on a treat right now. >> Are they back there still? >> No, they're right here. >> Okay. Are they in the office still? >> Yes, you. When target security becomes more organized than your vacation itinerary, you know the trip has gone sideways. >> How much we looking at? >> More than 300. >> Okay. All the tax. >> $300. >> Over $300. That's felony territory. >> Hello. How are you? >> Hi. >> Thank you. So, this is Annayia. This is the info she gave me. Um, she said she does not have an idea. >> She gave the name Annayia, but her real name is Jimisha Alani, which means the very first thing she shoplifted was her own identity. >> Her she's been in the store about 7 hours or so. She said she's waiting for someone to pick her up. She's visiting here. >> Okay. Hello. >> Um, she >> she was staying with her sister's [music] family in Chicago and you can bet her sister was about to find out what their star marketing executive from Mumbai had been executing inside Target. >> She doesn't live here. She's from India. She's with family. They're coming to pick her up still a few times. Um, so basically she's been in the store. We've been watching for at least 4 hours. [music] She's taken a ton of merchandise, different kinds. We're getting a total right now for you. It'll be well over 500, I'm sure. That's when she finally spoke up. >> There could be more. >> You're right. >> Yeah. >> Um and she put them all into big three reusable bags and then she kept getting really close to the door. She'd stand there. She'd set her phone about three times she did that and then she came back into the store, kept shopping and then eventually we just stopped her because she passed the first set of doors, went into the vestibule, stopped her in the vestibule, brought her back here. She's saying [music] that she was still planning to pay for it. Um >> Okay. What do you guys want done? >> We're going to prosecute the resale and trespass. Okay. >> And so began her endless routine. >> Let me just pay for it in order. >> That's that's not happening. >> It will become like a broken record in the world's weirdest Target remix. >> So you don't have an ID on you or anything like that? >> No. >> No driver's license? >> I don't drive here also. >> Okay. So you don't have any sort of Illinois ID, anything [music] like that? I'm not from this country. >> Okay. Well, there's a lot of people who aren't from this country but still have some stuff. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Jimisha tried her best to pitch again. >> Do you have a middle name? >> No. I can only [music] do is I don't mind paying for it everything and then leaving. >> No, that's not happening. >> Can't do that. We lost that opportunity. >> At this point, she was basically trying to return the Titanic after it hit the iceberg. >> We're way way way past that. You committed a felony. But it's like being 24. >> It would have been fine if you didn't leave, right? You would have had that opportunity to pay, but you just left the store. At that point, you chose to not leave. You can't go back. >> It was like listening to a kid beg to finish the test after the bell had rung. Cute, but not happening. >> You know, how you order? >> You can't come back to Target. You can go to Walmart or Meyer or Kohl's or you're going to have to find a different store to shop. >> You don't have to pull this off for sure. >> Meanwhile, [music] the officer took the fake name she had given and ran it through the system. >> Good job. >> I'm afraid no record on file for last name of Lonnie first. I'll check online. You don't have to have like account or anything, do you? >> Where do you live? India. >> Negative. >> Who Who are you staying with right now? Where does your family live? >> Family is in India. >> Her way of dodging was almost comical. Like a kid trying to hide a cookie by holding it right behind their back. >> How'd you get here? >> On the flight. >> On the flight? >> Yeah. >> So, you're here by yourself? >> Yeah. >> Okay. They let you fly over without a passport? >> Of course, I have one. >> You have a passport with you? So, how do I copy the passport and move over? >> Okay. What's your passport? >> I don't have a passport right [music] now. At this point, the cops weren't dealing with shoplifting anymore. They were trapped inside the world's worst episode of Where's Waldo? Except Waldo was a passport. >> So, okay. You flew here from India to America. >> Exactly. But the passport is not with me in this bag. >> Do you have a Do you have a picture of it? >> Listen, I [music] don't want to get into any trouble. >> Yeah, we're we're it's too late for that. Girl, pull up the passport. >> No, but then what am I supposed to do? That's none of my business. I don't know. You shouldn't have been stealing stuff. >> I've not yet done anything. >> Oh, you have. Pull up your passport. >> For what? What do I do? >> Okay. [music] >> The officer reminded her that she has two options. >> Pull up your passport now or we're going to take you back to the [music] station and you can pull up your passport there. >> Please don't. I'm really >> It's really It's too late. Can you please just pull up your passport? >> He just You promised me that nothing is going to happen. >> I did not promise you. >> Of course, you said that nothing. You'll once we do this thing, you will leave. I said, "No, I said as soon as we're done with our reporting, we'll try to get you out of here as soon as we can." >> Yeah. You said you did not you won't be allowed. >> We're not going to fight with him. We're not arguing. >> We're not going to fight with him. >> It's too late. >> She argued with more security as if they were Supreme Court judges. Entertaining but hopeless. >> What do you want me to do? >> I need you to pull up your passport. I need to see valid identification for you. >> And then >> and then you will be going back to the station with us. I need to see your identification. >> Please don't take me. >> That's that's simply not going to happen. You don't get to have that choice anymore. You made you made lots of poor choices today and now you have to pay for the >> but he said he's not going to put me in the station. >> Well, that's not He doesn't work for us. I don't know who this man is. So, >> I'm really sorry. I'm ready to pay for this. >> That's again I understand you're sorry. I know you're ready to pay for it now, but you didn't want to pay for it then. So, I need you to give me your identification. >> I'm really sorry, please. >> It was less a legal defense and more like a remix [music] of the same three lines on repeat. your receipt. She >> I mean there's a lot of stuff. She's scanning it all into her. >> But she one second. He promised me that you can leave one scanned. >> Simply none of my business. That has nothing to do with our job. >> So what do you want me to do? >> Passport, please. >> Thank you. >> So where are all those other things that you were just swiping by? >> Oh, that's all Indian documents. >> You can I can have I don't have my I can show you my license here. >> Okay. So who's what's who's who's Jamisha? >> Me and this is >> so who is who so who's Anaya? >> This is my name also but this is my Jamisha. You can see my picture. >> Okay. [music] >> This is me. >> Okay. So this is so this is not your first name. >> No. >> Okay. That's nice. >> The cops weren't sure if they were investigating shoplifting or auditioning contestants [music] for Guess That Name. >> Listen, please don't please don't embarrass me. Ma'am, >> I think your own choices are the women embarrass you. [music] It has nothing to do with me. >> So, what do I have to do if I have to? What do you want me to do? >> You are difficult. >> I'm not taking anything. I'm ready to even pay for it. >> It's not does not work like that. I don't know why you keep saying the same thing over and over again. >> What do you want me to do? >> I just want you to be quiet for >> She kept insisting she could pay as if Target had a secret aisle where stolen items could be cashed out after the fact. >> I'm really sorry to bother you if it is. I'm really sorry. >> I understand that you're sorry. >> I'm not from this country. I'm not going to be staying [music] here. >> Okay. How far? >> Okay. Are you allowed to steal things in India? >> No. I didn't think so. >> Okay. The minute he came, the minute the door opened, he came. I returned back. I said I was just waiting. >> I've not gone away. How would I even run with these bags? It's m humanly impossible. >> That's when the total went up. bunch of tax >> 767. If it is that much, I don't mind paying you. >> No, we're past that. I don't know what I don't know why you keep saying that over and over again. I've told you many times. [music] We are past that. >> I I told you what I would like you to do. >> Finally, security guard asked if they want to see her video. >> Need video tonight. [music] >> I would love to have it. >> I'll stop. >> Oh my god, Annayia, it's the first time I've sat down in 4 hours. Yeah. [music] >> How are you not tired? >> No. >> You've been walking around for 7 hours. >> I'm not even >> Oh my gosh. >> I'm ready to pay for the merchandise and leave the store. >> No. I don't know why you keep repeating that. I told you no. >> If stubbornness could be bottled, Target would have had a new product on aisle 5 that night. >> So then what do you want me to do? I told you you're going to be coming back to the police station with us. [music] >> Please don't do that. >> That's my job. >> I'm really sorry. >> It's I I understand that you're sorry. >> What do I go to the police station and do? >> Ma'am, you're going to be criminally charged. >> I'm really sorry. >> Okay. >> I don't mind paying for the merchandise. >> Okay, I'm I'm done talking to you because you just keep repeating [music] the same things over and over again and I keep telling you that that's not an option. We can't do that. So, I'm not going to be acknowledging that anymore because I've already determined that we're not doing that. You're repeating the same thing over and over again and expecting a different response. It's not going to happen. >> One second. He promised me. >> You've already said that. We've already gone over that and it does not matter to me. You still committed a crime regardless of >> Let me just pay for the merchandise, please. >> Then came another round. She begged to pay again. >> Pay for the merchandise, please. >> What? What is the harm? Let me just >> I don't mind paying for the for the merchandise and I'm I'm not going to come back again. >> Let me just pay for the merchandise and finish it. [clears throat] I need to take these goods for everyone at home. >> And you have her walking past the last point. Okay. >> You want to see it really fast? >> Yeah, sure. >> Can I just purchase some merchandise? >> [clears throat] >> Another officer stepped in, giving it a shot to make her see that paying now wasn't on the table. Let's see if she'll get it. >> So, let me explain. >> 71 had the stuff. Did you go past the double? So, >> no, not once only. I mean, not even completely. >> Before I ask you any more questions, okay, >> I will explain this to you. >> Mhm. >> Yep. few times she came up, stopped it right here. I think she was seeing if it beeped or not. I don't know. And then she went back back in, grabbed her stuff, came back, stood back, >> and the last time she went all the way around, came back behind one of [music] these things. >> When you do that, >> did it beep then? >> No, she didn't have anything that would have. So, not everything. [music] >> Finally, it was crystal clear. No one wanted her money anymore. >> Money for you? They don't want any of that. They want you here. That's why we're talking and we're not going to take any money from them. We're not going to take any money from you. [music] Okay? We have paperwork that we got to do here and then we have paperwork that we have to do back at the station. >> At least she didn't try slipping the officers a tip because that would have turned her shopping spree [music] into a bribery bundle deal. Please, how will I go back? >> They were going to pick me up somewhere from Target. Okay, we we can call somebody once you get back there. Okay, once we get back there, it's a lot of paperwork. All right, sometimes it's dependent, you [music] know, if if we do our paperwork, sometimes you can leave. Okay, once our paperwork is done, then you leave. Then you can call somebody to pick you up from the station, which is not >> I don't want anybody to pick me up from the station. I'm >> then you can call an Uber. Then you can call an Uber and have someone else pick you up. If you don't want anyone else picking you up from the station, then you have to call an Uber or somebody cuz you know you got to get out of our custody somehow. So, you're not going to have to go anywhere tonight. You'll be able to go home. But you have you can go somewhere wherever you want to go, but somebody else is going to pick you up. >> Somewhere in the [music] distance, the inventor of Uber probably felt a strange urge to high-five himself. >> Did you drive here? >> No. >> How'd you get here? >> They dropped me in. >> Okay. Well, then they can then they can help you figure it out or you can call an Uber or whatever. Can't the paperwork be done here only? >> Do I need to go to the station? >> Yes. >> This amount I don't mind paying. It's not a Let me finish. >> You're starting to frustrate me. >> We've told you a bunch of times that is not an option. So, please stop saying that. Have you ever seen >> She then tried [music] her chances with a friendlier officer. >> What is this? >> Uh, that was her phone number. >> Huh? >> How do we go to the station >> with us? you'll you'll ride in the car with us >> and then be there for longer >> until until we get the paperwork done. Sometimes it's maybe an hour. >> It finally hit her. How on earth was she going to explain this to her family? >> You can tell them whatever you want. >> At least be helpful. If I've done run away or something, >> I have to be helpful. And at least you can be I know yall are being very helpful but I just need to you all to help me if first of all not from this country. If I'm not carrying money or something it's a different thing. I have money to pay also. [music] >> Okay. Can he explain that to you? I'm sorry that you're from a different country but like you said you're not allowed to steal in India either. Most places do not really appreciate thieves. >> Of course you don't. you if you walk out and if you if I walked out and I ran away yet I'm just coming. He came running. I was like what's happening? I was on a call. Where are these people? I don't mind paying for it. You can see the video. I don't mind paying for it and finishing it off. I need to take these articles for as gifting. I promise there won't be anything. It's over. I just need to pay and finish [clears throat] it. >> All those items weren't random. They were gifts for her family. Clothes, jewelry, cosmetics, [music] water bottles, medication, and homegoods. If she really showed up in Mumbai with that hall, her relatives would [music] think she either married a millionaire or robbed one. >> Can I pay for this and finish it? >> What do you think the answer is going to be? >> I don't know. >> It's going to be no, just like it was the other 15 times. >> Let me just let them know that I'll take a while. >> What are you calling Sam here from? me to call the family friend that [music] I will take some time to come home. >> Yeah. Yeah. Go ahead. >> Because they'll be wondering where is she? >> Go ahead. >> Imagine being on the other end of that call. >> About an hour here. He answered that question. >> Well, I need to wait for the receipt to see [music] how much stuff you stole. >> But don't at least use the word stole. I don't mind paying for it. >> Okay. If the word stole is too much for her to handle, then how about her picture stamped as a shoplifter with Target? >> He should have just take your picture real quick. Okay. >> Of what? >> Just for you for Target's records. >> Thank you. >> He should have just told me, "Ma'am, you're going. Can you just finish paying for it?" I was on a call. I would have finished it. >> Walmart. >> Can I buy the stuff? >> No. >> And >> no, you're not buying [music] anything. You're not welcome here. You're not welcome to make purchases here. No, they don't want your business. >> Even the officers were probably wishing they could return the whole situation for store credit. >> Oh, just kidding. Pick [clears throat] up the >> total amount or 13. >> I don't mind being dead. >> Stop. Do >> you want me to allow me to like give you everything else or >> um No, I'll take that back with me because I'll have to do the complaints and everything. >> All right. I'm going have you take your bag off and put it right here. >> Take the bag off and put it right there. I told you what's going to happen. Stand up. Nothing >> on you. Nothing on you. No, no, nothing like that. Oh, please. Just face me. uh >> she has a personal luggage, too. >> Yeah, [music] it's an empty bag. >> Okay. >> She brought something into the store. >> Hey, please. Please don't do this. >> Don't resist. It's not going to go well for you. Stop. >> But why? >> Just stop. We explained it to you. Okay. When you take things without permission, that's a crime. >> But what do I What do I do now? For how long is it going to be? >> Hang on. Huh? >> Just hang on. >> It's time for a change of scenery. >> Do you have the trespass or No. >> I have it all. >> What do I tell the family? >> I don't I don't know what to tell you. >> From here. >> Yeah. Do not resist. You're going to catch an extra charge. Don't do that. Just keep walking. >> More charges. >> 1641. >> Let's finish it here. If this had gone down in India, the officer might have caught on to that not so subtle hint at a bribe. >> It's going to be very embarrassing. Please, man. I I understand that it's embarrassing. I wouldn't steal either. It's very very embarrassing. >> What do you want me to do now? >> You're going to go to the station and you're going to be processed. >> Huh? >> You're going to go back to the station. You're going to be criminally charged and processed. >> What do you do in this criminal? What is that? >> You'll have to go to court. >> But at least let me know how do I need to call somebody. >> You You'll need to call somebody later when we're done with all the paperwork. >> But what do those people do to me? Like what do you want me to do? I I need to go back home. >> Well, you should have thought about that. Well, but I don't if you keep me forever or something. >> No, we're not going to keep you forever. >> Please. I have a daughter who's 20. >> Well, we should have be a better role model, right? >> Yeah, but then please help me. >> I'm not going to help you. Why would I help you? >> Huh? I'm not going to run away. Why you keeping [music] this? >> Keeping what? >> This to run away for $1,300. >> If crime had a Yelp page, she'd probably be leaving a one-star review right about now. Oh my god. [ __ ] sake, >> dude. Dude, [laughter] I like looked around. I'm like, you're frustrating me now at this point. Ask me 7,000 times. Can I just pay for it now? Can I just No. [music] No. >> When the dust finally settled, the official tally came out to about $1,39616. She was first charged with a class 3 felony, but after negotiations, she plead guilty to a reduced [music] misdemeanor instead. The deal came with strings attached, one year of supervision, 50 hours of community service, and an online shoplifting course. Basically, homework for adults who thought selfch checkckout was optional. And that's the ride. Four shoplifterss, four stories, each stranger than the last. Only in America can stealing turn into running, wrestling, begging, or bargaining and still end up on camera for the rest of us to see.
