On Sunday, January 26, 2025 at around 6:26 p.m., officers were called to the Walmart on South Valley Drive in Las Cruces, New Mexico for a shoplifting report. Asset protection had been watching two women on camera. Both were stopped right at the exit, taken into the same office, and read the same rights. Sounds like their stories should end the same way, right? Well, watch how differently the next 13 minutes play out. >> Hello. All right, how many do we only have? >> Um tell me on one, but she's dropping stuff pretty quick. >> Okay. >> So, I don't know if they have a lookout outside, but it's just the one. There is another one, but I think it's just the one right here. >> Okay, just her. >> Just this one. >> What's she concealed? >> So, she had the blue BuzzBalls with her. >> Okay. >> And she went to one of our aisles, and she only came out with that one. >> She still have it on her person, or just in the cart? >> Just in this um green bag right here. >> Okay. >> I don't know. And I had to clear everything out of my purse. >> Tell me I got to go. >> Do you think she'll she boss what he has something in her purse, too? I'm pretty like 90% sure there there's stuff in there. >> BuzzBalls with her. >> Do you want them trespassed? >> Yeah, trespass. >> Certainly not her. If you could do that, we would appreciate it. >> Okay. >> Okay. Appreciate you. >> Commander Thompson, clear and valid expired. >> While we're heading to the station, let's quickly rewind and look at what these two women did because their choices led to two completely different endings. They stole from the same store on the same night, and the amounts weren't far apart. $58 for one and 35 for the other. So, what changed everything? Well, Serenity Heart gave officers her name, date of birth, and an Arizona address. The whole thing took less than a minute. The other woman said her name was Vanessa, then Vanessa Sanchez, then Melissa Sanchez. That name came back clear with no record on file, but while walking out to the patrol unit, she pulled away and tried to run. Stay to the end to see what each woman was actually charged with. Then let us know in the comments, do you think the charges fit what happened? And just to be clear, we are not here to judge anyone as a person. We're only looking at what the camera captured and the choices made in that moment. So, let's keep it civil. Now, let's get back to that patrol unit. >> They're going to tell you to take it off here in a couple seconds. And they're going to check your blood pressure. >> At the end, Melissa Delphin, 26, of El Paso, Texas, was medically assessed by Las Cruces Fire and booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on three charges: shoplifting, concealing identity, and resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer. Serenity Heart left the same store the same night with a citation, a trespass notice, and a court date.
