A quiet hotel parking lot just after 2:00 a.m. in the morning. Morrow police are dispatched to the [music] Red Roof Inn on South Lake Plaza Drive for a report of a person shot in the head. No name, no age, no clear story, only that a gun has gone off at a motel just off the interstate. They don't know exactly what happened, but by the time officers reach the Red Roof Inn, everyone involved [music] is already gone. They didn't wait for police. They didn't wait for EMS. They had already left the property [music] and rushed the victim to Southern Regional Medical Center. And when officers arrive at the hospital, [music] the entire case shifts because this isn't an adult. This isn't a parking lot fight. [music] This isn't just another late-night motel argument that turned into gunfire. The victim is a child. A little boy has been shot in the head. According to the report, doctors [music] said the bullet entered through his forehead and exited near the top of his head. He would later be airlifted to Scottish Rite and rushed [music] into emergency surgery. Now, the questions begin. How does a child get shot inside a vehicle? Where were his [music] parents? Who brought the gun? Why was a loaded firearm within reach of children? And why did everyone leave the motel before first responders [music] ever arrived? The father, Terrell Orr, tells officers he was inside the SUV [music] when the shot went off. He says he was trying to pull up a video on his phone for his son when he heard the gunshot, [music] looked over, and saw his child slumped over. But almost immediately, officers notice problems. >> [music] >> They report finding a 9-mm magazine in Terrell Orr's pocket. Investigators [music] later recover a 9-mm handgun from inside the vehicle. And according to the boy's mother, >> [music] >> Terrell was heavily intoxicated that night and didn't even realize he had a gun with him. Then, investigators obtained the hotel surveillance video, >> [music] >> and that video forces them to look at the father's story much more closely. According to the report, the footage shows moments that raise new [music] questions about exactly where Terrell was, what the child was doing, and what happened in the seconds before the gun went off. What starts as a tragic [music] shooting now becomes a search for the missing piece. Did this child somehow find the gun and shoot himself? Was this reckless [music] negligence, or is there more to the story? Tonight, you're going to see how [music] officers responded, how the father described what happened, and how the evidence [music] slowly began pushing this investigation in a different direction. What began [music] as person shot in the head at a motel becomes something more focused, a 3-year-old boy shot, a loaded handgun in a [music] family vehicle, and a story that may not match what the cameras and the evidence show. In this video, you're going to see how [music] that night unfolds through the lens of responding officers and investigators. You'll hear what the father says happened, you'll see what police find, and you can decide for yourself [music] what you think took place at that Red Roof Inn. That's that's all I got right now. So, I'll be up here. I'm waiting for a photo come up here so we figure out what's going on more. Right now, it's just me up here, so All right, then. So, we all in here. Y'all sitting in the car, I'm assuming. All three of y'all. >> No, no, no. It was me and him and I was on the phone and I just heard a gunshot. >> Was he sitting next to you or was he >> Yeah, I just I I just No, actually, I got off the phone because he asked me to play Baby Shark or Incredible Hulk or something. And I just heard a gunshot and I look over and I see my son was bleeding. >> [music] >> Okay. Now, she was in the room? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> And I started screaming for help and then they came to step >> He just handed me the baby and I just lost it. I called 911. I tried to tell them what I could tell them. >> No, I left him in the car because I ran up to come and get help. He was still in the car. >> No, you handed it to me. >> Yeah. >> Why do you think my shirt is wet? >> I don't remember. All I know is I heard a gunshot. And I seen blood come coming out of my son's head. >> I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. Okay. Uh-oh. I am. I've been praying since I I got here. Was it with their with their eyes as well as I can see the front of his feet, right? >> What do we call that? >> All right, I'll be standing by with the vehicle. Half of them are original four. >> Hey, the handgun's going to be in the floorboard. >> So what? >> The handgun's going to be right there on the driver's side floorboard, so Appreciate it. >> I ain't seen you in a long time. >> I know, man. >> You got stuck on nights. >> Yeah, y'all got promoted, so I'm stuck on nights for good for a while, so What's his damn code again? >> 50-40. >> We need a stretcher down at the bottom of the hill. We need that helicopter. >> Hey, just give me a heads-up. We had a 3-year-old get shot in the head at Knights Inn. Yeah, red roof van. Apparently, he was playing with the gun in the car with dad sitting next to him, and it went off. So Just giving you a heads-up. Y'all know yet? I'm at the I'm at I just got here at 22G, so All right, but it's Skelton. All right, then we're good. Skelton's Yeah, he didn't even leave Rodeo yet, so he's on his way up here. All right. >> All right, bye-bye. Scale them come up here first, then we'll send scale them back the other way. Yeah. See if we can get video footage of all that. All right. All right. Bye. Now, where was you at? >> I was in the room. >> You was in the room, room 253? Okay. >> I was in the room with my other children. >> That's your husband? >> Yeah, the father. >> Okay. >> Well, he ain't the but I don't know what happened. All I know is I heard the gunshot room Well, not room. I heard the gunshot and then I was like, "What the was that? That sounded like a gunshot." And my daughter opened the door, she looked out and then I just got up cuz something just I don't know. I just got up and when I got up, I looked and his dad started screaming, "My son, my son." And then he freaking grabbed him and started to try to run him to me and I started calling 911 because he's screaming for somebody to call 911 and in that moment I told him, "Let's go." We got in the car, we brought him here. I could I was too focused on keeping him breathing or moving or talking that I I I was on the phone with the operator, she's trying to calm me down, tell me what to do. I don't know. >> Now, your other kids are back in the room right now. Are they okay? >> Yes. >> How old are they? >> From 15 down to 9 months. >> Okay, so the 9 months is with your 15-year-old. >> Yes. >> Okay. >> They're They're staying with their >> Okay. >> They're with their older brother, so. And their older sister. >> Okay. >> But they're probably freaking out. And I need to be with him. >> No, I I hear you. I understand, so. >> Like I have to be with my baby. I have to. >> Hey, go to room 253 check on them check on the kids inside that room for me real quick. They're okay? Okay. I appreciate it. Hey, Chief. Sorry to make bad. Hey, just giving you a heads-up. We had a 3-year-old shoot himself today. Right about like 10 minutes ago. So I'm at Southern Regional right now trying to figure out what's going on. Yeah, I already called him. So just giving you a heads up. So. Uh Sergeant Sergeant Skelton, that's who I'm calling right now. So. All right then. Hey Sergeant. Yeah. Yeah, it's the one sitting right there in the emergency room entrance. I got a SO deputy sitting on it right now. And I got photos sitting back at where I guess it took place, but they're saying it happened in the car. Yeah. The navigator The navigator sitting in the emergency room, that's where he said it took place at. The dad was in the car with him. I guess he was sitting next to him. The guy I guess the gun was in the car. I haven't got the full story yet, so. Yeah. >> I see. I'm saying. >> But, all right. In the parking lot of Red Roof Inn in front of room 253. And I guess after the kid shot him, so I guess he took the kid out the car, ran up to the room to the mother. The mother took the kid, called 911, and they just drove to the emergency room. So, there going to be a blood trail going up to the room. >> Wait, what are you doing? >> Hey sir, go >> Go outside. >> He's trying to blow something up. >> What? I think you put a cigarette >> No, I I called you so far, so Hey, do me a favor, man. I just need you to sit down in one spot for me real quick, all right? So, we'll we'll do this right here. Walk Let's walk over here real quick. You got no weapons on you. The weapons are I'm just going to pat you. I'm just going to put sit you in back of the car real quick, okay? >> Why am I getting put in the car? >> Go Well, we got You got to be interviewed, all right? Now, I'm not going to separate you from your son or anything like that. Your son will >> to go I want to be with him. >> leav- he's leaving right now. >> I want to go with him. >> go with him. >> Why? >> Cuz they're getting on a helicopter. >> I want to be there. >> Yeah, you can't go on a helicopter with him right now. >> no, no, no. I want to go to >> All right, are you listening to me? >> Yes. >> You can't go to >> I'll follow you, okay? >> Okay. Once I find out where he's going, I'm going to let you know so y'all can go up there. But, it's a it's a process right now. You're not You're not in trouble, okay? I'm just going to put you in back of the car for now, okay? Right here, man. >> Take take me >> Say what? >> Take take me to the hospital. >> Let me Let me work out where they're going, okay? He's got a big big hole in his pocket. So, he's been drinking. So, I just smelled that off him right now. But the mom was in the room with other kids. Cuz she wasn't even outside when it all happened. So I called Chief and told him so. >> 51 >> Gun's right here. >> Okay. >> I'm assuming the kid was just out there on the roof right there. I'm assuming somebody went that way. 2603, I'll check all the way for you. 06 09 20 382 >> Hello 1. We just finished checking out the vehicle. >> Shh. You got a [ __ ] warrant, too. Go ahead. >> Go ahead. It says like 83 counts 2. One of the King County Feds versus 34. The probation violation. >> I'm clear. >> Okay, there's a bullet hole right there. >> You want that light for you? >> Is that brain fragments and all kinds of >> Yeah, that's what >> So, it had happened in the front seat, I'm assuming, right? Where's the nearest hospital if that Where do they normally go? >> They're going to Sky Ridge Medical. >> Where is that at? >> That's off 400 up on Johnson Ferry Road. >> Okay. >> Really far from here. >> Okay. How you doing, man? >> Um Start in town for me. >> Take my PD. >> Yeah. >> We'll shut this up. >> Take my PD. >> I think it's powder this stuff right here. No, it's like that bag. It's all over the place. >> Yeah, it's all up here on the See? >> It's almost like salt. 2607 Can you start a new image to 22G for me? So, what? >> This would be easier if anybody detected plastic explosives. >> You want me to call T for you? >> Call them on both lines. >> You know what this is? It's a CID phone. Y'all doing all right today, man? >> Oh, yeah. >> All right, y'all some [ __ ] >> Go ahead. Think I'm to Mercy Room entrance. Negative. We're going to be taking it to our 35. 2607, can I get a case number last three? Three. >> You have a paper bag in the back? >> Yeah, I got paper in the passenger Yeah, I got it. >> Cuz they're really relevant >> Hey, just hey, give me some time here, all right, ma'am? So, what? Mom's in there. She left the other kids at the hotel room. 15-year-old 13-year-old and 9-month-old or 9-month That's not a bullet going to be right there in the ceiling or the roof of the car. >> Are you to Scotland? >> How far is that? >> It ain't going to be me going. >> So Are you going to 45? >> Anybody is going to be one of the detectives that we're trying to call in. >> It was a 19 alert. 29 minutes. >> Yeah, this part most likely will be detectives going. Where did the bullet enter now? Yeah, let me ask you a question. You think a kid did that? He's drunk He's drunk as piss. >> Based on the trajectory? Possible. >> I think it probably happened. >> Fo For uh and Fortune's over at the jail right now. Cuz there's I didn't know where this is the place, so there's blood all over the parking lot. But it's what he told that happened. He took the baby out and he ran upstairs with the baby. So that's the reason why there's a blood trail going up to the room. Mom said she grabbed the baby, saw that he was shot. She called 911. They hopped in the car, came back over here. So >> What's his name? >> Hm? >> You got the kid's name? >> I ain't got that far. You asked the mom. Mom can't remember [ __ ] right now cuz she's in a daze. So she didn't even fill out the paperwork for the kid yet. She just said he was 3 years old. So >> Did you get that information? Did you get all that information? We don't need to go back to Knights Red Roof Inn, do you? I mean, do you need anything from there? Cuz everything took place in the car. 2607 to 2611. I hear clear to leave the Red Roof Inn. Come up to 22G. Yeah, we're we're going to work that out. Yeah, we We'll work that out. He's in the back of the car. He ain't going nowhere right now. He got warrants on top of that. And he's been drinking, so >> Yeah. This story isn't >> It don't make sense to me either. He won't He ain't told me the full story yet. >> I know, cuz he he he he it sound like Yeah, I was busy and it sound like he was all over the place. >> Yeah. >> It did not make any sense. Just not right. >> Where did the bullet enter? Exactly. >> Uh right above the right eye and it came out right there. >> All right. >> And there's brain matter in the hair. >> Yes, it's all over the ceiling, too. So >> Although for a positive in all this, once I gave him pure oxygen, he started moving around crying. >> Okay. >> I I actually, you know, which means that like the body's getting good oxygen, but the brain was not for a momentary time of shock. And what now that he's sedated now, so we can't really give him a neuro exam and tell you the outcome, what what the prognosis would would look like. But, that's a good sign when I was able to give oxygen. He get whimpering and starting to cry. >> Okay. >> But, I don't think I still don't think he's going to come out well. >> Uh I kind of guessed at it, too. >> I'm never going to forget. This is my second GSW of a kid here. 5-year-old that shot himself here in the neck with a .40. How does a 5-year-old have the strength in his thumb to turn it on himself? >> That's the reason I questioned it. That's the reason I questioned this one. >> What what size >> Yeah, when it's three Yeah. >> What what What kind of gun is it? >> Just by the looks of it, I think it's a 9 9-mm. >> I think it's a Ruger LCP. >> So, >> That's a hard trigger to pull. >> Hey, what's up, man? Yeah, he answered the phone. Yeah, so he's tracking and skill is here. They're going to airlift him up to I forgot the name of the hospital, like 40 minutes away. But, it went through the forehead out top of the head, and doc said don't look don't look too good. And And dad's And dad's drunk on top of that, too. All right, then. Didn't mean to wake you up, but you the Key I I would have called Key, but he's on vacation, so. All right, then. We'll do. Appreciate it. All right, bye. What he said, accidental assuming a grown man shot himself. >> Yeah. >> He didn't forgot to say he's three or when I walked in it was probably like a three-year-old. Hey, what's up, fellas? No, no, no. Hey, you take all that down. Don't worry about Red Roof Inn. It all took place in a car. We got the gun and we got the bullet hole. I just need you to come up here. All right. Fellas. Fortune's going to take his sweet time coming over here. As soon as this happened, he just went to the gym. So. My question is, is dad even allowed to have a handgun right now? And I want to know if you think a three-year-old can pull a trigger. Good question. You want to go back to the room? Change your clothes? Then we'll can take you down there? Say that one more time. All right, we'll get we'll get you down there. Do you want to go back to the hotel and check on them? All right. The rescue should be right there. >> Hey, I know you're busy. >> I just made >> Is that Dr. Rafferty? >> The doctor's name. What's his name? >> Dr. Rafferty. Dr. Rafferty. R A F >> already know about that. It's that R A F >> E E >> E E >> D >> D >> I E >> I E >> I think it's Rafferty. Yeah, I think that's how you spell his name. Did you get a statement from the lady? >> The mother? She didn't even She didn't even say anything. It was all dad. It was all father. >> Shot then he got shot then she drove home and picked up the mom? >> No, so they're in the parking lot of Red Roof Inn. >> He just He just >> And he was sitting in the car with the kid. She was upstairs with her and the kid. And what he said makes sense so he took the kid, ran upstairs to her. She is the one that called 911. >> Yeah. >> So Where they're going to be heading? >> Whatever man. >> Scottish right? Scottish right? >> Yeah, it's over at 4285. Do you need directions to the guy? >> You got the address? >> Yeah, I did but come out. >> Which one? This one? No, that thing ain't going nowhere. I think they [ __ ] up. >> Got to be behind. >> I'll tell you where it says. >> 11152 Chamblee Road 7819. You can step out for two. >> I think it's secure. >> Other people are good though. >> Huh? >> Other people are good. >> Yeah. That guy's freaking out. >> I think he's good. >> Curry old son right here. Went outside of his head. The bullet went through his hand and kept going and then the other dude went Damn. Dude is strong. Dude is 83. Dude is black as [ __ ] So, all that I was going to kill him fortunately he did. Actually I might kill Take me right back to the hotel. Take a little gift when you take it out to the get it going. >> So, you want me to take the check out down to the >> Yeah. >> Fortune might be stuck on where he's at. >> I'm on a four-minute right now. So, I'm pretty sure the dude is strong where he's where he's at. >> Why I told him. Why we not charging him with a deadly conduct? >> Uh don't know yet. >> Because he was with the kids, right? >> Yeah. >> Well, at least charge him something. >> Well, see how the dude is acting right now. >> Okay. Hey, that's a good learning for Fortune today. Yeah, I mean blood was I saw I rolled up halfway up there and then somehow he went back to the park. Okay, so it so it makes sense with the blood everywhere because I saw it stopped some somewhere halfway. But um how the kid got a gun in the first place? So he was laying with the car? Oh my god. >> Yeah. I ain't going to answer no more questions. I'm going to tell them everything. >> Yeah. >> So right now he's got to go. >> Well, right now it's all that Calvin over here can turn over to him then. Yeah, she she she had like six or seven kids up >> Yeah, she said she still got kids back in the room, so I don't want her going all the way to the hospital down there. Covered in blood. >> So they at least the kids now or like >> Say it again. >> They got to They got They at least the kids to the waiting But she But >> Got a strike. >> You But you think he going to be okay? >> I'm no doctor. But >> I'm going to ask the mom ask ask if she want to go now. Hey, you want a bag? I have the bag I got with me. Okay. You ready to go, ma'am? Okay. I actually talked uh to your kids back in the hotel. They good. They They good, but um there was um I think your son the the bigger son he tried to calm uh his sister down cuz the the sister was crying. >> Yes. >> But uh but they okay. I check on them and now I'm going to bring you back there, all right? >> There? >> Yeah, back there at the hotel. >> Okay. How am I going to get to the hospital with my baby? >> Uh I saw right now I just got off on my supervisor that I take you back to um to the hotel. And uh you might get a Uber, Lyft, or whatever that you want to take. >> have the money for that. And you guys are taking my car, so I don't >> Yeah, the car had to uh had to go. >> for evidence and all that stuff. >> Yeah. Just um can you just stay right here, lady? Just let me confirm with uh my supervisor and then I and then I'll be right back with you. >> I don't know what they're doing with my if that's okay. At least see him, say bye, whatever's going to happen. I don't know what's going to happen. >> Give me a second. >> I don't need to talk to him. A wave is fine. I don't care. I just want to know that he's mentally okay. >> Just Just stay right here. Let me talk to him. Let me Let me talk to my supervisor. If he okay, I'm going to bring you to that. Okay? All right, just stay right here. Okay, first name? Your phone number's right here? Appreciate it. Thank you. Yeah, we have we sent somebody over to check on them. They get They're a little stressed out cuz they all heard the gunshots. Didn't know what happened. So. That's why I'm about to head back over there and tell I appreciate it. Thank you. Who you on the phone with? Your ain't husband, is it? >> Yeah, he did call. >> Who is it? Check said we're going to take you We're going to take you over there and check you. Go check on your kids first, clean this up, then we'll get you right down up to Atlanta. Okay? I prefer you not talk to him right now. >> Great. He's just I just needed to know I needed him to know >> I'm going to explain to you what's going to happen here. Either way, he's got to go to jail today. He's got like two or three warrants. >> Okay. >> There ain't nothing we can do. But at the end of the day it's his responsibility when he has a child in his in his presence. >> Exactly. >> You you seen him with a gun before? >> Not Not to sleep in together now. He's always talking about guns and stuff and having guns and stuff, but I've never seen him with a gun. >> You know if he's >> together for 8 years. >> You know if he's a convicted felon or anything? >> Yes, he is a convicted felon. >> Okay. All right. So, who Vehicle belongs to you? So, we got to take that with us for right now. We'll let you know what's going on. We'll probably get in contact with you here soon. But, he is going to take you down there to get cleaned up. I want you to at least go down there looking not not blood all over you. So, when he does wake up >> car. >> So, Are your Are your clothes >> Mine are, yeah. >> Every single pair like everything? You got nothing in the room that you can change into? >> No. >> Cuz we can't let you into that car right now. >> Okay. >> Cuz we just got to do our thing. >> Are you able to go in there and get my stuff yourself? >> I got >> No, we can't I Once that car is loaded up there, we can't go in it no more. Cuz we got to do the search warrant. We got to just look through it. >> Right. >> See what actually happens if his story makes sense. So, >> I understand. >> Did you What did he tell you? He didn't really say anything? >> He was just screaming my son's name so much. He just I don't He just said that he heard a gunshot. That's it. That's all I heard him say. And then he freaking handed me the baby. And I'm sitting there. He's screaming at me to call the police. So, I called the police. Then he's like, "That's what we're getting in the car. I'm driving you to the hospital." And then I told him the keys are in my pocket. He grabbed the keys. So, I'm on the phone with the operator people. And then I I couldn't talk to them anymore.
