I said that what I said. Okay. He's talking about oh, since she said all that I'm going to go cancel your flight. You didn't even want to help me. So then he started She's the one with the drugs. [music] Yes. I don't want to touch you but this is what he's like, you know what I'm saying? Like that. Y'all supposed to fix my ticket. I said I can't do anything for you cuz I can't fix tickets. They're rude. They're disrespectful. For him to be a man on the end of the day and get into a woman's face like that and put your hand in the face and think I wasn't going to pop off. Babe, hang up the phone real quick. They want to take me to jail so Can I just get him out my mom's number so he can call her mom, please? On January 20th, 2025, Orlando Airport Police responded to a battery complaint at the American Airlines baggage office. A 19-year-old passenger, frustrated over missing luggage, allegedly threw her cell phone at an airline employee, raising the question of when a customer service dispute becomes criminal conduct. Okay. I can't She came at Okay. I told her to keep Where are you? No, no, no, no. Where are you? Where are you? Cuz you're like you can't get it out. Yeah, I took it to him. He was like, "Oh, who are you flying with?" She said for a lot of dough. I was like, "Oh, that's Silver." She went to Silver and the and she had to switch her stuff with Silver. Okay. You know what I mean? >> yelling over there. >> Yes, her yelling over there. She has her I was like, "Okay, I'm sorry." I took over here to Gus. Gus reinstated her and said, "Hey, all right, now since I reinstated you, you got to go back to Silver." I guess she didn't want to do that. She came to me all Y'all don't know what to I said, "I can't do nothing for you." So you get your Yeah. I told her I said I can't do anything for you. I am a just a bags guy. So you remember at the whole time What's her name? You know what? You remember the whole time the whole time I was saying I can't Okay. You know what I said? >> When you get to this, what do you guys want? >> They'll Do you guys need us to do anything? She literally threw her phone at me. Threw the phone at the back of whatever. I don't know what it was. She hit me with it. Yes. >> Wrap her ass up. All right. I'm sorry. Wrap her ass up. 201 204 out the back. I didn't touch you. A male in the back of the baggage claim with a blue suitcase beside him. >> Okay, I'm done. I'm done. Yes. All right. Okay, fill me in on what's going on. Sir. >> What happened? Ma'am. I got in here before my flight. Okay. This man right here, I asked him for help. The man with the dreads. I asked him for help. He told me it's not my problem. I said, "Okay, cool. I'm not going to argue with nobody." I come over to her [music] next. She helped me. She's nice. She said she couldn't find my stuff. So, she sent me over to this man. Him, I'm asking him all type of questions trying to get my freaking my flight. It's going to leave at 7:10. Okay. Okay? He's not helping me. He finally found something and sent me back over here. Okay? Then I went back over there to him. >> Okay. I asked him over there when he talking about something, "You know what?" I said, when he was over here, I said, "I don't understand why you couldn't just help me in the first place." That's exactly what I said. He talking about, "Oh, since you said all that, I'm going to go cancel your flight." You didn't even want to help me. So, then he started This is the one with the dreads. Yes. Okay. I don't want to touch you, but this is what he like, you know what I'm saying? Like that. Okay. So, then, you feel me? I told my phone cuz back up, you're a man. I'm a whole female. Why why are you why are you in my face? Like this. He never once told you that he works to like push people or anything? No. When I first got here, he offered to help me. Why you walking up to me? He offered and he took over there. So, I'm thinking that he I'm thinking that he he's here because he offered to [music] help me. He came to me. I didn't come to him. He You up to me. So, I'm letting him help me. Now all of a sudden you talking about oh, it's not my problem. I pushed up so why did you walk up to me? You could have left me alone. I wasn't even worried about him. I wasn't going to stop by him. I was going to go to somebody at a desk. Okay. I didn't do nothing to this man. I've got him on my phone. >> just just to backtrack, so he came up to you with his fingers or was it you came up to him with his fingers? Did you I went over there. He kept on my back. You 25 with braces this and that. Matter of fact I'm 19 with braces, okay? We're going to go ahead and make that clear. I'm 19. He's talking about You're fat ass with braces. You're fat ass with braces doing that. His other people came back there holding him back. When I felt that finger touch me in my face, I threw my phone. My phone never hit him though. [music] My phone My phone was on the ground and that's how I know my phone never hit him cuz somebody had gave me my phone. My phone never hit him. I threw my phone. He waved it. So, it never hit him. But if he would never put his hand in my face, then I would never throw my phone. But when I When I told him yeah, I know it's not for me. When I told him when I told my phone when I told my phone it it fell on the ground. My phone just cracked. That's how I know it never My phone just cracked. It didn't It didn't hit him. My phone was face on the ground. >> Under Florida statute section 784.03 battery requires intentional contact against the victim's will and non-accidental touching. The subject admitted she threw the phone satisfying the intentional element outright. Even by her own account that the phone missed throwing an object at a person with intent to strike constitutes attempted battery. Her self-defense claim under section 776.012 fails on all four grounds. Verbal insults do not constitute unlawful force. She approached the employee making her the initial aggressor. Throwing an object is disproportionate to verbal provocation. And she had clear alternatives walking away or requesting a supervisor. Florida courts are consistent words alone will not justify physical retaliation. Officers established probable cause under Section 901.15 through the victim's sworn statement, corroborating witnesses, and critically on-scene review of airport CCTV footage before making the arrest. The arrest is constitutionally valid under the Fourth Amendment. The pat-down search conducted by a female officer on a female subject is lawful as search incident to arrest under Chimel versus California. The subject alleged racial bias in the search. That argument has no legal merit. Under Warren versus United States, 517 U.S. 806, objective reasonableness governs. The officer's race or gender does not affect the constitutionality of a search incident to a valid arrest. Let me see your ID. This is your ticket. You're William? This is Anne. I'm not even going to I'm not trying to be disrespectful to y'all. I promise to God, I'm already frustrated cuz I can't get where I'm going. If y'all can just try to get me where I'm going, that'd be great. If not, let me call my people so they can come pick me back up cuz this is convenient for me. It ain't like You know what I'm saying? I'm still going to need your ID, though. Oh, thank you. Okay. I don't know why she was so angry. Like I'm I'm actually it's confusing me why she's so angry cuz I was the only one that was helping her. So, I when I when I told her, "Hey, go go speak to him." I don't She wouldn't go speak to him and he was like, "Oh, you you're flying with Silver. Where you going? Florida?" So, she went to Silver. Went to Silver. Talked to the lady. The lady then tried to make her go to fix her stuff here. She went to me and I was like, "Okay, let's try to let's try to figure it out. I'mma go take you to Gus." Took her to Gus. Gus reinstated her and then he told her to go to Silver. I guess she didn't know what the heck to do after that. She mad as hell. "Uh-uh-uh-uh-uh. I don't know what y'all supposed to fix my ticket." I said, "I can't do anything for you cuz I can't fix tickets. I am a bad guy. I can't do anything for you. That pissed her off when I told her I can't do anything for you. >> That's when she threw the phone. >> That's No. Therefore, we go we go over there. She's like, "Oh, this right here." Sorry for my language. I know I'm not going to This right here. And I'm like, "Bro, what did I do? I'm helping you." She So, at this point, I'm done. I'm about to go to Gus. Hey, Gus. >> She hit you in the back of the head. I go walk We go walk and she follows me over here. We bicker for a little bit. I'm like, "Bro, I'm not And then I turn around and walk this way. She throws the Only one lady threw the phone. So, therefore >> Which hit you in the back of the head. >> She hit me probably around this area. >> Okay. She hit me in the back. I don't need no medical attention. I'm not I'm not going to say that [ __ ] like that. Fill this out for me. I got you. I don't need Just basically you were trying to assist this lady. Describe what she looks like. Um she got aggravated with just like you told me. Um and then go on to [music] where Bring it up to where Yeah, she threw the phone. Yeah. And then you would like Okay. I'll give you this in a minute. I got you. I would never Y'all are rude. Y'all are disrespectful. Not you. Whoever it is over here in this area. I would never come back over here. They're rude. They're disrespectful. But him to be a man on the end of the day and get into a woman's face like that and put your hand in the face and think I wasn't going to pop off? Well, he had me all the way up, okay? I'm going to go ahead and let you know that right now. Soon as he stepped to me, that's when he had me all the way up. So, whatever happened after that just happened. I don't even give at this moment. I can't even go to my my my plane. I don't even care what happened. Well, like I said, His job is done done done. I don't care for that that he's fired. Like I said, if you dropped your phone came up to Absolutely. Yeah, he's going to have an issue because he's going to have to deal with his boss. And I I'm not going to lie. You did You're going to see me on the camera walking over there, but only reason why I was walking over there is because he was telling them to cancel my flight. So, I was trying to tell the man what was going on. I wasn't going over there trying to attack him. I I only coming over there to try to speak cuz there was a white man over there and he was helping me. So he was already over there with the white man trying to tell him to cancel my flight. So I was just over there walking trying to talk to the white man telling him no don't cancel my flight. He's the one that's not helping me. Yeah. This all started because he said it wasn't his problem but this is your problem. Just so you know for future reference, anytime you see anybody in those black shirts, if they don't actually have like the airline's like name yard or I understand you said that but this what, he shouldn't have tried to act like somebody he was not. Cuz you know cuz you Cuz you know you Cuz you know what he did? He came over there acting like he wanted to help me. I don't know if he liked what he seen then he got mad and wanted to call me back after you already mad. I truly believe he liked what he seen cuz as soon as I walked in the door, he approached me. I didn't I didn't call you up here, he approached me and asked to help me with my ticket. So I'm thinking I don't know nothing about no airport, I'm thinking okay well maybe you can help me. You go over there to the thing. That was it. Okay. I don't know. But he's he's stupid. Your job is done. I want to I'm sorry about that ma'am. Are you serious right now? Mommy. It's three polices in front of me. It's two men and then it's a lady. She's a lady. I don't know. And then it's another lady who work here. They don't I asked her to tell you what they doing in case something happen. She said she don't want to talk so I can't force nobody to say nothing. I You on speaker but I can't She probably still not going to say nothing to you. Go ahead and say what you got to say. Um I'm Shania's friend. Who is Shania to you? This is my mom. I'm trying I'm trying to get I I left my car at my mom's house and they dropped me off here. So I'm okay with going to jail cuz guess what? I got money to burn out so it's never been an issue with going to jail. So here's the thing. Here's the Here me >> If you want me to talk to your mom after all this is said and done, I don't have a problem with that. But, right now right now we're trying to figure out what's going on. Okay? Mommy, I'm with Please, cuz she's Let me Let me talk. Hi, Mom. Hello. Hi, this is Officer Lines. I'm going to need a huge favor from you. Um like I told your daughter, I will be more than glad to fill you in after the fact, but right now we just need to do an investigation and I really just need your daughter to focus. So, if you can give her a call back later, that'd be great. Okay? I I will fill you I will fill you in on everything, but right now I just need to take care of this investigation, okay? So, we're trying to figure out what's going on. All right? The only thing I'm asking is cuz she's out there, do somebody need to come pick her up? We live far. How far do you live? 20 minutes 40 minutes away from here. 40 minutes? Okay, let me do this. Hold on. >> [music] >> Okay, Mom. What's your telephone number? Ma'am, he did not hit you. I watched the video footage. >> He's in my face. He was a good distance between you guys. There was not a good distance between us. There was. I watched the video footage. If somebody's all in your face doing that, what do you expect? He did come towards you, but Thank you. So, I got my point. I'm getting scared. >> in your face. But, ma'am, he's coming towards me. >> the video footage. So, I'm not going to argue with you or I have the video. >> with you. I don't want to argue with you either, ma'am. I really Okay, stop talking. Hold on to this. I told you, Mom. >> I watched the video footage. Her point is somebody's If somebody's >> argue video. I don't want to argue with you, but That's what you're doing right now and I'm not going to sit here and do it with you. If somebody's coming towards me and I got scared, he's a grown I don't know him from a can of paint. I don't know him. >> after him if you were scared? This is my first time No, we're not going to do this. I'm not doing nothing with you. I'm just explaining to you So, what do you want? He wants fresh charges. Or you want me to go confirm that real quick beforehand? Well, he's fresh out of charges and he said so. The white lady said that she She I don't know what's wrong with her. She's talking about She wanted the fresh charges. You know how white people get. But, [music] she was like, "Oh, I didn't um he came in She He didn't come directly in my face. He ran up on me." I got scared. Throughout the encounter, the subject directed sustained profanity and personal insults at officers. Under Houston versus Hill, 482 U.S. 451, offensive speech directed at law enforcement remains First Amendment protected. Officers correctly declined to add disorderly conduct charges under section 877.03, which requires conduct that immediately threatens public peace. Verbal insults do not meet that threshold. On use of force under Graham versus Connor, 489 U.S. 386, force is measured against severity of offense, threat level, and active resistance. With a misdemeanor charge, no weapon, and no physical resistance, minimal hand control during the search was appropriate and proportional. He is absolutely 100% pressing charges, correct? Okay. All right, that's all I needed to know before we put her into handcuffs. I can't press charges. Do me a favor. Let me see your This is all real quick. They trying to take me to jail, so can I just give him my my mom's number so he can call my mom, please? So my mom can be able to bail me out. I'm okay with going to jail. I'm okay. I'm going to put my hands behind my back. Let me just give him my mom's number so he my mom can Do me a favor. Let's do this, if you don't mind. Wait, please. It's It's It's 689. I got you. Okay. I'm trying to give him my number. I I was going to turn around. I know. I got you. Like, I'm literally I got you. I'm going to talk to your mom and get that number. >> I need him so he can get some bro, this is crazy. Give us just a second, okay? We'll get that number for you. Hey, look look my grandma number look, babe. Yes. My grandma number is Can you please call my grandma right now, bro? All this [ __ ] would never happen if I would have just stayed my ass home. Yeah. I'm going to power down your phone. Is there any other number you need me Yes, that's why I'm saying my phone already going to go dead. Yeah. What's the other number? Huh? I understand you're going to be frustrated, but I'm really trying to help you. You're You're going to walk? I'm walking. >> So, then stop putting on a show. So, then walk. I'm walk, but I already don't don't like her, so don't touch me. All right, so we're going to put you in the back of the car. Okay, don't touch me. Look. I'm not understanding. ALL RIGHT. ALL RIGHT. All right. WE'RE NOT GOING TO TOUCH LOOK, SHE'S NOT GOING TO TOUCH YOU, BUT she's not Yes, she is. No, she's not. You're going to get searched before you get in the car, okay? Stop bucking or you're going to catch a charge. Do you want a felony? I'm not bucking nobody. You bumped into her. You bumped into her. Listen, stop. If you bump into her like that again, you're going to catch a felony battery law enforcement, okay? No. She's a female. She's a female. Is it somehow racist for a white female I don't see personally, yes. Yeah, but Y'all are very racist. Just spread your legs. Spread your legs. ALL RIGHT. DO not Do not [ __ ] up on her. I'm not bucking. I just said She's going to She's letting you know what she's about to do, okay? I'm just letting you know you're not going to get searched. Either one of them can. I'm not I'm just saying She's She's a female. How do you know she's white? I'm looking at her. Don't stereotype them. How do you know? I'm looking dead at her. You look like you can tell that I'm black. Okay. I don't see what Huh? Can't judge a book by its cover. You don't know who you are. I can look dead at her and see she's white, you know what Okay. That's good. It's a good It's a good thing that we're in 2025 we're talking about racism, right? Good. I hope that you change your thinking as you grow up to be an adult. That's That's unfortunate. Let's see. Can I have my paper towel to wipe my face, please? The paper that I have to wipe my face cuz I My face is All right, I'll try covered in tears. I'll call your mom. Hello. You got clothes and your sister didn't request it? Yeah. Can I just make sure I get all my stuff with my bag? Yeah, everything's going with you. The officers receive a B+ thorough investigation, constitutional compliance, and strong de-escalation throughout with a minor gap in on-camera Miranda advisement. The subject receives a D+. The frustration was real, but battery is not a legal remedy for poor service, and self-defense fails every element. Physical compliance during arrest earns the plus. The airport employee receives a C- correct to report and press charges, but alleged body-shaming and threatening to cancel the flight contributed to an avoidable escalation. Three lessons from this incident. First, no level of customer service frustration justifies physical action. The legal remedies are walking away, requesting a supervisor, or filing a formal complaint. Second, self-defense requires an imminent physical threat, a proportional response, and the claimant must not be the initial aggressor. None of those conditions were met here. Third, for service workers, verbal unprofessionalism does not justify battery from a customer, but it does contribute to escalation. And that contribution matters both professionally and in how a situation is ultimately judged. Let us know if there is an interaction or legal topic you would like us to discuss in the comments below. Thank you for watching.
