July 31st, 2022. Two friends were in the wrong vehicle at the wrong time. Strongsville, Ohio, in one of the peaceful nights. The driver of the vehicle, 2018 Toyota Camry, drove directly into a brick wall at speed over 90 mph, causing the immediate death of two passengers and getting badly injured. In this video, you'll see how one decision ended two young lives forever. >> Way to say this progress in Alamita car into a building. Two are deceased in the vehicle. >> What was first believed to be a tragic accident soon revealed something far more disturbing. This is the case of tell on wheels. The story begins in Strongsville High School. Dave Flanigan, a 19 years old and a recent graduate, known for his athletic talent and passion for barbering. Davian was admired by friends and family, for his kindness and generosity. He was also a friend of Dominic Russo. Dominic Russo, a 20 years old male, ambitious and driven. As his friends and family described him, Dominic has started building his future. He ran businesses and had his own clothing line business. He was living independently just steps away from his family home close to those who mattered most to him. McKenzie Sharilla, a 17 years old female, attends the same high school as Davian and Dominic. McKenzie was in a romantic relationship with Dominic for 4 years. The dark side of their relationship is that both of them had the habit of smoking illegal substances. [snorts] This is a break for us tonight. They were also involved in an illegal act. They broke into the Colombia Church of God, forcing their way through the church's door. >> Don't break anything. >> Felt bad breaking in though. Okay. E, I just touched a spiderweb. >> Guitar. >> They also decided to steal possessions from the church. >> Wait, what is this? >> Like a little globe, >> dude. Let's take that. >> I'm taking that. >> Put that like down the door so we'll see that. Their relationship, once seen as part of everyday teenage life, would later become central to an investigation that drew national attention. On the night of July 30th, 2022, at approximately 10:15 p.m., McKenzie, Dominic, and Davian attended a graduation party at a friend's home. They remained there for about an hour before leaving around 11:30 p.m. and driving to another friend's house. While there, they listened to music and according to later testimony, marijuana was used. >> Guys, I [ __ ] up that day. >> What? Why would you do that? >> Touch my hair, too, >> dude. No, never do that to >> I didn't care. again. >> Everyone's >> The group stayed at that house throughout the night. The car crashed. >> Could you tell someone was in it? >> I didn't go up to it. I was on my motorcycle. >> And how long ago was this? >> Uh 2 minutes. I live right on Westwood. Right now, it's so early in the investigation that we don't know. Um, what I do, what we what we do know 100% is somebody called somebody called it in. Somebody passing by called it in at a around 6:15, 6:30. >> Called in. What? The car was dismissed somewhere. >> Yeah. So, so what it what it appears that happened is they were going westbound on Progress from Pearl Road. that business that's right at the on Alamita right where progress ends. They hit that building. At the same time, the surviving driver started posting online, sharing emotional and highly public messages and tributes. >> Can you ring the bell? You just hit it. Investigators examined the vehicle. A tire depth gauge indicated that the tires were safe and not worn bald. A mechanical expert was called in for assistance. He concluded that the car was fully operational at the time of the crash and that the brakes and pedals were functioning as intended. Detectives also obtained Davian's Life 360 data. It showed that the vehicle was traveling at over 90 mph, raising suspicions that the incident may have been intentional. After some time, McKenzie was released from the hospital once medical personnel cleared her. During her recovery, she attended a music concert while using a wheelchair, attempted to pursue modeling opportunities, and even celebrated Halloween. To investigators, these actions appeared out of step with someone grieving an incident that had killed two people. As friends and family members told police, the relationship between Dominic and McKenzie was on and off, marked by multiple arguments and breakups. With consent from his mother, investigators searched Dominic's phone and discovered the following. >> Do not speak a word. If if anything comes out your mouth that's going to that's going to be disrespectful, instigating, or anything at all, like I'm I'm whipping this car over, okay? And you are getting the out immediately. I don't care where it is. Do not say anything that could piss me off. Okay? You know what could piss me off. Just don't say a singleing word. You literally broke up with me earlier. >> This is your last chance to open the door or you are not coming out of this house all night cuz I will not leave. >> You literally broke You literally broke up with me earlier. Like like what what is the point you're trying to like you broke up with me like earlier? Like what? >> No. No, I didn't. I didn't. I didn't. I did. >> You did. You said not to. You can't sit here and fight like like >> Okay. Well, you're not going to dinner. >> Okay. Well, step away from the door. Maybe I can come outside and talk for a sec. >> No, we're not fighting outside. You're going to open the door right now. >> Why? Why are we fighting outside? >> One minute now. Actually, >> look. Wait, now my mom's trying to call me. Like, I I got to >> No, if you hang up on me, we're done. I'm leaving, >> Kenzie. There's nothing I could do. Like, there's I can't imagine. >> There is. I'm calling my mom. Goodbye. >> No, you're not. Based on the evidence investigators collected, including drugs found in her possession, reckless driving shown in her social media posts, and repeated fights and arguments with Dominic, McKenzie was arrested. After reviewing the evidence, prosecutors moved forward with formal charges, including aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, aggravated vehicular homicide, drug offenses, and breaking and entering. McKenzie was then arrested by police units. >> Where is she? Right back there, pal. Hi, McKenzie. Step out for me. I'm detective. I'm the one who's been investigating the crash. You're under arrest for aggravated murder times two. Okay. Nobody's going to ask you any questions. Nobody's going to bother you. Can I have your key, please? >> Could you please be careful taking this one off so it doesn't break the bracelet, please? >> You got it. >> At this point, McKenzie wasn't concerned about having ended two lives, being arrested for murder, or any of the other charges. She was worried about her bracelets. >> You got it. You want my No. Thank you. >> You got it. Okay. Just keep your hands right here. >> Not done. You're not going to tighten these. Okay. We don't want to hurt you. >> Thank you. >> This cruiser right here. >> Actually, he took her out of the car and we did not. >> Okay. Do you have anything in these pockets? >> That's your head going in. >> Okay. >> Recording mounted. Wi-Fi connected by that black mat. Okay. >> I can't wear any of it. >> No, I need you to take it off while you're in jail right now. >> I can't wear these. Now, unfortunately, everything's going to have to come off right now once we know when the detective comes back and we know for sure what's going on. Um, everything's going to be bagged up here. It's not going anywhere. >> All right, Mackenzie, just hang out up against that wall to your right. >> Uh, I don't know. So she's sentenced on count two, the murder of Davon Flanigan, 15 years to life. She's sentenced on count one, the murder of Dominic Russo, 15 years to life to be served concurrent to each other with credit for time served. >> Today, McKenzie is serving her sentence in an Ohio state prison where her life is now defined by confinement and time.
