Officers are racing to a call about a possible assault in progress. The suspect reportedly armed and acting erratic. >> We'll have your suspect. Looks like he's swinging around a cane, walking through the center of the complex. >> Swinging a cane around, walking in the center of the complex. And so, checking for a canine for this southeastern hot call. >> And he'll be coming from Meadowbrook on the far east side. He's going to be on the third row to the south. >> Third row to the >> Yeah, so there's a unit coming in now. >> Okay. >> All right, enable, keep going one more row. >> Over. >> And then make your first right. He's actually walking westbound towards the apartments. Now, make a right. Make a right. Straight ahead. He's standing right in front of you at the end. >> 431, 971. >> Over. >> Covers with him. >> Roger. >> All right, everybody's got to cover you at 97. Subject's walking walking towards the officers. >> Walking towards the officers. What is he carrying? >> Towards the apartments. Now, make a right. Make a right. Straight ahead. He's standing right in front of you at the end. >> 431, 971. >> Over. >> Officers quickly locate a man later identified as Mr. Littlejohn pacing through an apartment complex waving a cane. But this call isn't about a cane. Dispatch has warned he may have a knife. >> Hey, >> drop the cane. Drop the cane. Drop the cane. Drop the cane. Drop the cane. Drop the cane. Drop the cane. Ma'am, stand back. Stand back. >> No, that's my husband. >> That's okay. He's about to get tased if he doesn't drop the cane. >> He tased me what? >> Just drop it. >> He tased me what? >> Drop the cane. We got a call you're hitting somebody with that. >> Well, I got hurt by him. He hit me with >> That's the call we got. So, drop it and tell us your side of the story or you're going to be under arrest. >> I'm not dropping my cane. >> Drop the cane. >> Little John refuses to comply. What begins as a simple command to drop his cane soon turns chaotic, fast. >> Right now, you're being detained. You understand that? Yes, you are. >> No, I'm >> Hey, uh-uh. Uh-uh. >> I'm not being detained. I'm not being detained. Help me. >> Don't do it. Now, you're under arrest. Don't do it. Oh, he's got a knife. He's got a knife. >> In a sudden flash, Little John pulls a knife and advances toward officers. Tasers are deployed twice, and he goes down. But moments later, he's back on his feet and running. >> Stay lethal. Stay lethal. >> Shoot me. Shoot me. >> You got it off. >> Officers fire in response, believing the suspect has drawn a gun, but it's not. Moments later, they realize it's only a cell phone. The chase continues through the nearby intersection. >> Go tase him. >> Yep. >> Stop. STOP REACHING. STOP REACHING. HE'S REACHING. STOP. HEY. He has A GUN. STOP. >> AFTER A BRIEF STRUGGLE, officers safely detain Little John. >> Get on the [ __ ] ground. GET ON THE [ __ ] GROUND. GET ON THE [ __ ] GROUND. >> LET'S GO FOR A TASER. >> LET GO. GIVE me your [ __ ] hand. Give me your hand. Give me your [ __ ] hand. You're under arrest. Give me your [ __ ] hand. Grab his hand. >> He's treated on scene for minor injuries before being taken to San Diego Central Jail. >> Hold his hands behind his back. >> Work the wrist. Work the wrist.
