Keep your hands up. >> KEEP YOUR HANDS >> SHOTS FIRED! SHOTS FIRED! >> OFFICERS ARE HERE TO TAKE A MAN INTO CUSTODY, but before they can make contact, he opens fire. But the motive behind this violent confrontation is far more unbelievable than anyone realizes. >> He said, "I'm going to kill you, and then I'm going to go in there and shoot your stepdad." I just jumped in the passenger seat, and as soon as I was getting up, he started shooting at me. >> It all begins on July 3rd, 2018, when a distressed neighbor contacts the Marion Police Department after witnessing something alarming. Within moments of the call, dispatchers realize this is far from a routine complaint. >> 911, where is your emergency? >> Yeah, there's a shooting on Bainbridge. >> What's the address? >> It's uh He's got a gun. He's shooting everywhere. >> Okay, I got >> Bainbridge, 104 High Street. >> Bainbridge High? >> High >> Bainbridge High, hurry, please. He's in the back DOOR WITH A GUN. HE'S SHOOTING, PLEASE. >> OKAY. >> BACK DOOR, HURRY, PLEASE. >> Officers arrive expecting to find an active disturbance. Instead, they're met with an unsettling calm, and nothing appears out of place. As confusion begins to set in, officers speak with neighbors to find out what led to the call in the first place. >> We're just We just need to talk to you guys now. Did you see anything? >> No, well, I was in the kitchen and I heard what I thought was fireworks, you know. And then my sister called from Oklahoma, and I tell her, I said, "Well, it is, you know, day for Then I come out into my living room and I see lights, and I look down there and I thought, "Oh, there's a squad." You know? And then I went to turn my air conditioner on a few minutes later, and then I see all these police, and I'm like And then I open my windows. I don't know if you guys see me, but I was like trying to listen, and I heard about a shooting and I heard >> bangs did you hear? >> Um, like four. >> Maybe four? >> Maybe four. >> Just as the search begins to intensify, a significant detail about the victim comes to light. Within a moments, an important piece of the puzzle falls into place, shifting the direction of the case. >> I want to follow up with this dispatch. Sounds like the victim is at home still and was shot in the arm. >> What's even more surprising is that, despite being shot, the victim has managed to drive herself to the hospital. But officers still don't know her condition. As they wait for an update on her health, they examine her vehicle at the hospital. And what they find is enough to reveal how violent the attack must have been. >> Some blood in the car and three windows are shot out as well as a bullet hole through the windshield. >> 59, can you give 12 a call when you get a second? Yeah, give me a second. >> Seven, I don't know how many casings you found, but there's multiple bullet holes in this vehicle, at least four or five. >> This Jake. >> Hi. How are you? >> Good. >> I don't think we have any casings. I got a live round up back here. >> Got one casing sitting in the passenger seat up here. Looks like some of them are maybe even exit holes, I'm not sure. So, this Look at the windshield. There's a casing >> 40 seconds out. >> There's a casing there. >> Oh, yeah. Yep. Two, there's another one right here. There's a bullet hole there. So, the driver wasn't bleeding, right? >> Just as they're inspecting the car, another person quickly draws their attention. Waiting for them is her boyfriend, Tyler, who appears to know more about the incident than they initially expect. >> Boyfriend? >> Yeah, he We called last week about him harassing us. >> Hi. >> What's the problem? They can shot him, dude. He >> he went he shot her and went to my house to shoot me and they they shot him down I guess. He had a gun on him and he was at my house talking to my mom like he was a Christian missionary and wanted to talk to me. >> Who's here right now? >> My girlfriend Angelica that the one that we that she was she was shot yeah. >> Okay, she's pregnant. Let's just go inside and chill man. There's nothing >> He was going to do something stupid man. He's nuts. >> Yeah. She's pregnant right >> Two right on two right on you guys are good okay. >> From Tyler's account, the victim is identified as 30-year-old Angelica Fry, a pregnant mother of two. As this unfolds, another team of officers returns to the scene. That's when a light bulb moment hits investigators. This address is already familiar to police. Digging deeper, they uncover a troubling connection. The shooter isn't a stranger, but someone from Angelica's past. Officers soon discover an earlier 911 call placed by Angelica herself involving her ex. >> 911 what's your emergency? >> Bain Avenue. >> Okay, what's going on there? >> My ex was not supposed to be at my house. He had told me he left. I just went there today and he is there and he took a bunch of pills in front of me. >> This was an attempted >> Yes. >> What's his name? >> Matthew [snorts] Lust. >> Matthew do you get him? I'm sorry. >> He is the father of my kids. >> That ex is identified as Matthew Lust and in a surprising twist, police had already checked on him earlier that very same day. >> What's up buddy? >> Hey. >> Good. You tell me. You Matthew? >> Yeah. >> What's up today bud? >> I don't know. That's She's uh >> Here talk to me for a minute. >> She's just over over exaggerating. >> Okay, what happened? >> Uh we just got in an argument. >> Okay. >> And uh I took some Aspirin and it was like two of them. >> Okay. >> And I lied and said it was something else. >> All right. Why would you do that? >> That's panicked. >> Well, I guess I was trying to scare her and it worked. Okay. Why would you want to do that though? You know what I mean? >> I was wrong. >> Cuz I mean, when you do something like that, this is what kind of happens, you know? Whether you mean to or not, you know what I'm saying? Any weapons in the house or anything, bud? >> No. Uh-uh. >> Are you feeling >> No, I'm good. >> depressed? >> Uh it was just a situation. >> Uh-huh. I get it. >> No, but I mean, it's cool, man. I >> just overreacted, you know? >> Do you uh so are you saying you only took aspirin? >> Yeah. >> Hey boss, he says he took aspirin just to scare her. Took two of them, he's saying. So, do you uh >> Yeah, there's just a lot going on this morning. Just checking >> Yeah, the squad's going to check your vitals just to make sure. >> Okay. >> And then um you got to understand something. When when you do something like this, there's repercussions. Okay, I'm not charging you criminally. That's not what I'm getting at, but you're going to drive to the hospital and talk to counselor. I don't have a choice. >> Today? >> Yep. After the squad checks you out, what made this get sour today? >> She cheated on me. >> Just find out? >> Yeah. >> Or officially found out, I guess I should say. >> Yeah. >> Seven, Seven, come on for you. Clear all that squad. >> Yeah, that stuff's not easy to contend with. I get it. >> I'm married. >> But do you really want to do you really want to be with somebody that's like that? You know what I mean? I mean, I know she's your baby your apparently mom, and that's important. But it happens once, it might happen again, and you know, you're going through the same [ __ ] >> Officers had to take him, Matthew, to the hospital for counseling, but when they later followed up there, they made a shocking discovery. Matthew had fled. Not long after that, Angelica was shot. The dots are finally starting to connect. Luckily for officers, Angelica is finally well enough to talk now, and her account is about to tie the entire case together. >> He was supposed to be gone all weekend. And I told him in my closet this morning. >> He probably didn't hear you. >> in my closet this morning. >> In the closet. >> And he went over there. And um I came home. We went out cuz I had my kids with me. >> If If you >> I didn't think he was going to be there. >> I think upstairs is where you bring your kids here is that >> Because this is my house, you know? I'm I'm not supposed to be there. >> And that's why I told you I am not I am not >> He's been threatening me before and hurt me and >> So, when I went He had said no people >> You're touching other people. >> He called the house and I called my mom and I said And I don't know what happened in here. >> Angelica's statement is disturbing enough, but to add on to that, investigators soon to learn that Matthew's threats didn't stop with her. When officers interviewed Tyler's parents, they learned that others close to Angelica may have been targeted as well. >> So, you didn't have a chance to talk to your son. What did he say? What's going on? Cuz you were on the phone with him when this was going down, right? >> He He said, "Matt just shot up somebody in the family. I want to make sure you're okay. They told me to go to the safe place." Not to kill me there. And that was when it just like kind of clicked to me, you know? Like This really is him. >> Did anybody else talk to you about that? I mean, that was him, your son, grandkids. Was Did they see something? Somebody else say something? See something? >> Did that happen at my house? >> Or was there a I guess there was a pretty sensitive moment with the your sons. >> Um yeah, I knew I knew she was scared of Matt. >> Okay. >> With the evidence continuing to pile up, investigators decide to detain Matthew before another tragedy strikes. But when they track his phone, they make an unsettling discovery. He's outside Tyler's house, confirming everyone's fears. As officers move in, they're unknowingly stepping into the most volatile and unpredictable moment of the entire investigation. >> Sir. >> Keep your hands where I can >> Keep your hands where I can see you. Keep your hands where I can see you, please. Come out here. Come out here. Hands up. >> I don't like that Matthew's here. >> It looks like him. Keep your hands up. Keep your hands up. >> You got Patterson? >> What's your name, sir? John Will? Okay, John, if you do me a favor, just lay down on the ground for me, please. Okay. Keep your hands where I can see them. Stop moving. Stop moving. Lay down on the ground. Sprawl out. Lay down. Don't Keep your hands up. KEEP YOUR HANDS UP. SHOTS FIRED. SHOTS FIRED. HE'S DOWN. HE'S DOWN ON THE GROUND. KEEP YOUR HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE [screaming] HIM. DON'T YOU MOVE. GET IN THE HOUSE. GET IN THE HOUSE. >> 516 PATTERSON. >> I don't think so. Send a squad. He's down. >> Clear immediate squad and route. >> After Matthew collapses in the shootout, paramedics rush him to the hospital and do everything to keep him alive. Investigators now shift their focus to the motive behind the attack and the events that led up to it. Days later, Angelica agrees to an interview and with it, the truth behind the shooting finally begins to come to light. >> And he's like, um you know, you're not I said, "Yeah, I am." He said, "No, you're going to get an abortion." I said, "No, [music] I'm not." He said, "Well, then I'm going to hold you down and I'm going to give I'm going to punch you in your stomach." He said, "I don't care. You're going to have it." I need an abortion. I'm not doing that. I'm not doing that, you know what I mean? And he said, "Come here. I'm going to kill you. I'm going to kill you." He's like, "I told you not to bring him here. You didn't listen to me." And I was like, "Why? You don't live here. This is my house. I'm allowed to bring my kids here." I said, "And you're not supposed to be here." You You were supposed to be gone. I said, "Well, I figured he would leave." But I'm going to have to leave him here, you know. And he's like, "I told you he didn't have to leave." You can be a part of the kids' life, but you have to leave. And so anyways, he's like, "You know what? I don't know why I keep bringing him here. I told you not to bring him here." He's like, "I didn't want to have to do it." I saw him reaching for a gun. I freaked out. So I was like, "No, you know." And the kids came running in the room. He pulled out a yellow piece of paper kind of like that. And he unrolled these pills and popped them in his mouth. And then bent over the sink and took a drink of water or like the faucet and took a drink of the water. I was like, "Why are you doing that?" I was just arguing with him like, "Why are you doing that? Like, go upstairs and make yourself sick. Why are you trying to kill yourself? It doesn't make sense." >> As Angelica continues her account, it becomes increasingly clear that the shooting was part of a much darker pattern that had been building for some time. That day, after realizing something was seriously wrong, Angelica took her children and fled to her mother's house where she called 911. But Matthew wasn't willing to let the situation end there. After leaving the hospital, he contacted Angelica and demanded that she return his belongings. Investigators believe it was a calculated attempt to lure her into one final meeting and carry out his deadly plan. >> And then all of a sudden, you know, like maybe 10 minutes later Matt comes out. He's like, "I need I need your car keys." Was the window up at this time? Yes, I did not did not Yeah. I said, "For what? What do you need my car keys for? I took everything out and put it on the table for you. It's in there, on the counter top in there for you." He's like, "Huh? What? I can't hear you. I can't hear you." I said, "Matt, your stuff is on the counter. Everything is out of the vehicle. I cleaned it out." He's like, "Huh?" I'm like he still couldn't hear me. Then he reached the door and pulled tried to pull the door handle open. He's like, "Come on. Just just roll the window down. Just roll it down." And he goes, "I said no, I'm not rolling the window down. I don't trust you." >> [music] >> And so he lifts his shirt up and he said, "You got 5 seconds to roll the window down." Could you see him again? Yes. He said, "I'm going to kill you and then I'm going to go in there and shoot your stepdad." I didn't give him 5 seconds. I just jumped in the passenger seat and as soon as I was getting up, he started he shot at me. >> After recovering from his injuries and leaving the hospital, Matthew faces the consequences of his actions. On December 17th, 2018, he was convicted on three counts of attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault, and one count of having a weapon while under disability and received a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
