SHOTS FIRED. SHOTS FIRED. Shots fired. Shots fired. >> I'm in. >> What? IN THE CAR. I SHOT THROUGH THE CAR. OH, he shot through the car, he said in Florida, firing at that white vehicle and claiming to be hit. That was Okaloosa Sheriff's Deputy Jesse Hernandez as his body camera video shows Hernandez seemed to unload his entire clip. Amidst the panic, Hernandez's partner, who did not hear anything like a gunshot, seemed confused as to why Hernandez was freaking out, so she also started shooting at the car. The man they were targeting was 22-year-old Maris Jackson. The deputies had just arrested and handcuffed Jackson for allegedly making threats and grand theft. And they had placed Jackson in the back of that white vehicle, the sheriff's deputy's own cruiser. As Deputy Hernandez crawled on the ground, his partner asked him if he was okay. How are you? >> I I'm I'm good. I feel weird, but I'm good. >> How are you? >> I'm good. I've got him. Oh, he's good. All right. You see, Deputy Hernandez had not been hit by a bullet, but rather by a falling acorn. Yes. Authorities in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, now admit an acorn dropped out of a tree, causing Hernandez to think he had been shot at. Hernandez then opened fire on the suspect and the deputy's own cruiser, and the deputy's partner then joined in. For several minutes, Hernandez continued to think he and other officers faced an armed threat. admits the officers gunfire and the arrival of more police with weapons drawn. Neighbors and kids along the street began wailing and the deputies urge everybody to get back. >> Stay inside your house. Stay Yes. Stay inside your house. I don't want anybody. >> Dude, am I hit? Well, there was no blood. And eventually, everybody realized the deputies had not faced any gunfire. Miraculously, Maris Jackson, the suspect in the white police cruiser, who was unarmed and completely restrained, did not get shot. All of the deputies bullets had missed him. Still, Jackson has told local media that the experience damaged him. In other words, expect a huge lawsuit. Deputy Hernandez has now resigned. The Akaloosa Sheriff's Department issued a statement saying, quote, "We are very thankful Mr. Jackson was not injured, and we have no reason to think former deputy Hernandez acted with any malice. We are limited in further response due to pending litigation, but let this be clear. We understand the situation was traumatic for Mr. Jackson and all involved and have incorporated this officer involved shooting into our training. Here's an idea. Train police to be aware of mother nature and educate them about things that make noises like bugs, birds, and falling nuts. Also, change police culture from shoot first, apologize later to take a deep breath and use basic logic. If you have somebody handcuffed and locked in your own police cruiser, maybe that noise is not a gunshot. Human beings don't deserve to be shot at because a nearby bird or squirrel is saying to a cop, "Get away from my tree." Amazing. Anyway, Donald Trump is exploding again over more Lincoln Project attack ads. Check out that video at the link below. I'm David Schuster. Thanks for joining us.
