Put on the brakes. Put on the bridge. Stop theing car. >> In Carol County, Iowa, that's a police officer on the hood of a car he had just pulled over. The officer has his gun drawn and is demanding the driver stop. >> Stop the car, man. Jesus Christ. Stop the car, man. >> But the driver accelerates to 50 m an hour. The police officer manages to hang on for a while. With that moving train blocking the roadway, the suspect veers into an industrial park. Then the vehicle hits a ditch and the police officer is thrown off. [Music] Carol 91. He is going north past the county shed to Highway 30. I have 1050 in a ditch. I need medics to my location. I have Officer McCarti down. The cop suffered a broken back and now police have released the dash cameras as part of a training video. >> I'm okay, man. Go get him. I'm all right. >> How's it going, guys? >> This chase in 2021 began when officer Patrick McCarti made a traffic stop. The officer ran the names of both occupants of the vehicle and discovered a warrant for the man's arrest for forgery. Hate to be the one to tell you this, but it sounds like you got a warrant at Illinois. Okay. You got your ID on you? Sorry. Okay. Do you have anything on you? Why don't you step out of the car until we can identify you? >> Then you can see the man push a woman out of the car and move into the driver's seat. >> Stop the car, man. Stop the car. Stop the car. >> Stop the car. As the man lurches the car forward, Officer McCarti climbs under the hood. >> Stop it. Stop the car. >> This is the view from his body camera. >> Stop the dude. God damn. >> Another police officer's dash camera picks up the chase. >> Stop theing car. Stop the car, man. Jesus Christ. Stop the car, man. Heat. Heat. [Music] Police eventually arrested the driver, Dennis Guyder, in Illinois. He recently pleaded guilty to charges in connection with this incident. Guer's attorney asked the court for leniency, claiming his client was in fear for his life because of the gun pointed at his face. The attorney also noted the police officer did not follow training when he stepped in front of a moving vehicle. A judge sentenced Guyder to 5 years in prison with additional time coming for his Illinois parole violation. As for Carol City, Iowa police officer Patrick McCarti, he recovered from his back injuries. Still, his own police chief acknowledged Officer McCarti violated protocols and should not have jumped on the car. And on top of the criticism from his own police department, this video of officer McCarti is now being used in several police training department videos as an example of what not to do during a chase. By the way, we have lots of videos we would happily share with police for their training about what not to do, including this one. It shows a school bus stopped and a teenager nearly getting run over by a police officer who ignores traffic laws and drives by. And the story gets even more infuriating. Check out that video at the link below. I'm David Schuster. Thanks for joining us.
