We discovered a dead baby in the bathroom. Oh my gosh. Looks very not crying or >> What did you do to it? Like, how big is the baby? >> What? >> One of the most disturbing hospital discoveries in recent American history. A newborn baby boy is found dead inside a trash can at Artezia General Hospital in New Mexico. and the person responsible, a 19-year-old patient who walked into the ER with what staff believed was nothing more than back pain. But within the next hour, a horrific secret would come to light. It's the early morning of January 27th, 2023. 19-year-old Alexi Trazo arrives at the emergency room with her mother, Rosa. She tells staff she's been having severe lower back pain since she's reportedly had hip and spine issues before. Nothing immediately raises red flags. Nurses begin routine intake. They ask basic medical questions, pain history, medications, recent symptoms. Around 1:40 a.m., Alexi tells the staff she needs to use the restroom. A nurse directs her to the nearest ER bathroom. Her mother checks on her briefly, assuming everything is normal. But then the minutes start to stack up. 15 minutes go by. No one sees Alexi leave the restroom. A nurse grows concerned and goes to check. When she asks if everything is okay, Alexi replies through the door that she's having trouble going to the bathroom, but the sounds coming from inside don't match the story. The nurse hears the paper towel dispenser being pushed repeatedly. The toilet flushes again and again. The sink runs non-stop like someone's trying to rinse something away. It's strange, but still no one is prepared for what's about to unfold. Another 5 minutes pass. Now it's been about 20 minutes total. Medical staff announce through the door that they're going to open it if she doesn't come out. Before they can, Alexi opens the door herself. She steps out quickly and tries to walk past them, almost as if nothing happened. But then they see it. Blood everywhere. The restroom is splattered and smeared with blood from the walls to the floor, across the toilet, even the sink. Even more shocking, blood is visibly running down Alexis's legs. While Alexi is being examined and asked questions, an ER housekeeper is sent to clean up the restroom. She opens the door and freezes. The room looks like something out of a horror movie. She begins to clean, but when she reaches for the trash can, something feels off. The can is unusually heavy. She hesitates, then lifts the plastic liner and looks inside. Inside a trash bag is the body of a newborn baby boy. The housekeeper screams and runs for help. Nurses rush in and confirm the horrific discovery. There are no signs of life. The hospital immediately contacts law enforcement. Officers arrive at the ER and speak with staff who direct them to the room where Alexi is being treated. Her mother, Rosa, is still there, completely unaware of what just happened. Investigators speak to Alexi, leading to the shocking truth. A truth she tried to hide in the most unimaginable way. >> We discovered a dead baby in the bathroom. Oh my gosh. Looks very creepy if we didn't know what to do. >> Lexi, I told you about this. But >> I just asked you, baby, to tell me the truth. >> Scared me. It was not prior to looking. >> What did you do to it? Okay, stop right here. I stopped. Number one priority, guys. Number one priority is she just had a baby. I don't know if she's delivered the placenta. She's bleeding significantly. I spoken to the obstitrician at Loveless. They want her up there as soon as possible. I need I need your I obviously need your permission to transfer her from medical shearing. >> You're right. She needs to I'm sorry. I forgot she need to for to make sure that you're safe. I need to send you to lift loveless to labor delivery. >> Will you please agree to that? >> Yes. >> Yes. >> Okay. Great. I'm going to work on that. Um, in terms I'm sorry about this, but in terms of delivering um, a baby and it looked like you tried to hide it, you do have to have the police involved. >> And that baby was crying. It came out with nothing. >> I know. I know. But the the baby's going to have to be taken for autopsy and, you know, be an investigator and everything. I'm really surprised, I guess. Before the horrifying discovery inside that hospital restroom, staff had already been growing suspicious. Upon Alexis's arrival, nurses asked a routine but critical question. Is there any chance you could be pregnant? Both Alexi and her mother, Rosa, immediately and firmly denied it. In fact, Alexi went so far as to insist that she was currently on her menstrual cycle. To be certain, staff ordered a pregnancy test. And when the results came back, the first wave of shock hit the medical team. The test was positive, but this would be far from the last revelation. Because Alexi was now bleeding heavily, doctors quickly made the decision to transfer her to Love Lace Medical Center in Roswell, New Mexico, a facility better equipped to handle her condition. What no one fully realized yet was just how dark and tragic this night was about to become. >> Charge nurse, do you guys have any questions for me? >> Like, how big is it? >> It's full term. >> What if 9 months? Sy was crying. Next, >> have you watched the news of fe the girls that what they do to their babies and what they go to jail? I was crying for the very any any other questions. >> Thank you. But so as of right now, like I said is we're going to have the detectives come over here and they're going to talk to you. Okay? We have to gather some more information about what's what's going on. They'll get your statement. They're going to get the doctor statements. They're going to get everybody's statements. Okay? So I don't know everything here. Okay? So I'm not going to tell you. I can't tell you nothing. I just can't go to jail >> right now. No. Well, right now she's being detained. >> From the very beginning, it seemed like Alexi was doing everything she could to hide her pregnancy, not just from the medical staff, but even from her own mother. According to one of the nurses, when she was asked to lie down for examination, Alexi kept shifting and trying to move away, almost as if she didn't want anyone getting too close. At first, her complaint of lower back pain didn't raise major alarms, but her behavior did. Staff noticed she couldn't stay still. She seemed nervous, uneasy, and wasn't acting like a typical patient in pain. Something was off, and the medical team could feel it. They just didn't yet know why. >> Where was the baby at? >> I don't know. I have no clue yet. Like I said, I just talked to the charge nurse. We're still getting all the information right now. >> Okay. Um, once we get that information, like I said, the detectives, they can clue you in on everything and talk to you more about it. >> Okay. >> All right. Tragically, when the newborn was pulled from the trash bag, there were no signs of life. After a rapid assessment, the medical staff determined there was nothing they could do. Attempts at resuscitation would be feudal. At 2:28 a.m., the baby boy was officially pronounced dead. What had happened in that restroom was no longer just a medical emergency. It was now a criminal investigation. >> Where did you put the baby at? Tell the trouble but in uh 5 months later. Where the baby 460 came out of your back? You put >> He put it in the bag. >> Yes. To us. >> From what bag? But why did you say anything to us? >> Do you want to get in trouble for this now? You couldn't use your trouble. Mom, just give it a child. Let me speak to detectives when she's ready. Okay. Ready for the second one? >> Sir, look down. >> Second one is 512. >> Rosa steps out of the room to call her husband, still unaware of what's just been found. may be able to come back in here, but as of right now, I can't allow her to be back in here, okay? If you need something, we we're not going to stay in here, okay? Cuz I I think it makes it worse that we're here anyways. All right? Obviously, and I know you're scared. So, what we're going to do is we're going to stay on the outside of the door, okay? As long as you promise me you're not you don't you're not going to hurt yourself. >> Okay? Like I said, I this is a lot. I know it is. Okay? You're young. you know, I I don't want to be in here kind of adding to to your anxiety and everything else. Okay. >> About an hour passes and Alexi is still waiting to be transferred. She becomes restless and keeps asking to see her mother. >> You said you're you're looking for someone to talk to your mother. >> Yes. Just where I'm going. >> Yeah. No, she already knows. Detective, >> is she going? >> Yeah, she should be. Detectives up there talking to her right now. Um, so you have any questions for us? He's not out here. >> Alexi is strapped onto a gurnie and flown by helicopter to Love Lace Medical Center for further treatment. But while she's in the air, investigators on the ground are just beginning to piece together what really happened inside that restroom. The autopsy soon delivers a chilling truth. The baby had been born alive. There were clear signs he took breaths after delivery. He didn't die in childbirth. He suffocated after being placed inside the tied plastic trash bag. With that finding, the case is no longer treated as a medical emergency. It's officially ruled a homicide. On May 10th, 2023, Alexi is officially taken into custody. She's charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. Just over a week later, she's released from jail on a $100,000 bond. And despite the severity of the charges, the court allows her to finish out the school year and even attend her high school graduation without an ankle monitor. But there are conditions. She's placed under a strict curfew and ordered to attend counseling. And the judge makes it clear if she violates anything in her release terms, she'll be taken back into custody and forced to await trial behind bars. This is Street Justice, where the truth can't be buried and the facts always rise to the surface.
