Officers arrive and immediately separate everyone involved, but their priority is 21-year-old Garrett Hughes, who is lying on the ground with a gun wound to the abdomen. Prosecutors later said Hughes was shirtless, unarmed, and facing away when Brewer confronted him. What started over something as minor as urinating on a wall had now turned deadly. >> 896 >> Love up. >> 0805 >> He's got pressure on the wound right now. It's right on the abdomen. Good. >> Once officers get the scene under control, they secure Brewer, read him his Miranda rights, and begin working through the witnesses. One witness gives deputies a clearer account of what happened before the shooting, helping investigators understand the confrontation and what they need to look into next. >> It wasn't really an argument. It was just talking. You know what I >> Okay. Who was talking Who was Who was talking? Those are the two. Okay. Back and forth with each other. Okay. So, they were talking and back and forth with each other, and then what happened? >> And And then he start He He came up approached him with his gun. >> Who was that? Which Who did? >> Him. >> Okay. He's standing over here, obviously, and put the gun onto the Jeep, and then we showed up on scene. You're already You're in the this as far as uh >> The light saber is on him. >> Okay. All right. That's fine, okay. >> Brewer is then taken into custody and placed in the back of a patrol car while investigators continue gathering information. Officers already know Brewer called 911 and reported that he had shot someone, claiming he acted in self-defense. Now, they need to determine whether the evidence supports that explanation. >> See this here? >> Go ahead. >> Yeah. >> What's your name? >> Got it. >> Tell me what happened. >> Um start if you can just start the I guess the night that you were at Kong Town that night. >> Correct. >> Okay. So, go ahead and let me know. Tell me Tell me what you got. >> I was there for um the Super Bowl. >> Okay. >> Uh I was with um my niece and her boyfriend. >> Okay. >> They left. Um I noticed there was a lot of activity going to and from the back door. >> Okay. >> As we have discussed in the past, right? >> Yes. So, I went out back to just see what was going on. As you know, I am armed. It's your my business. My property. >> All right. >> I went out back and there was [clears throat] not one This was not a drug dealer, I don't think. Just [clears throat] a guy. And he had buddies with him and there were There were cars, but he was in between two cars. There were car There were people on either side and then I guess they were all together. I don't know. They hadn't come from inside the bar. I don't know where they came from. And he's pissing in the parking lot. >> Okay. >> And on the building. And I said "Man, can't you just go in the in I'll be honest. Can't you just go in the bar piss in the toilet? >> During questioning, Brewer maintains that he acted in self-defense and later tried to invoke Florida's stand your ground law. He says he only approached Hughes to tell him to stop urinating, but claims Hughes became verbally aggressive, moved toward him, and appeared to reach for a weapon. Brewer maintains he feared for his life and fired purely in self-defense, but investigators had surveillance footage that would challenge that account. >> And we exchanged words. And as it progressed, he became more agitated and approached me. And I said, [clears throat] "Look, I own this. Stop." He continued to approach. I said, "I'm armed." It appeared as though he was reaching for something. The first round went off this way. The second went off up in the air. To the best of my recollection, he was already on top of me. It would happen that fast. >> Okay. >> There's no doubt I fired a weapon. >> Okay. >> Cuz I They wouldn't let me wash my hands. >> All right. >> Yeah, they wouldn't do that. I don't know. It it it it it happened. >> All right. >> I immediately, once he was down, did not continue to assault him, set my firearm on the hood of the car, >> Okay. >> awaiting the arrival of the police. I did not render aid because other people showed up to render aid. >> Okay. >> And I know he's got a lot of witnesses that are going to say a lot of different things. That's what happened from my perspective. >> Okay. >> But I can tell you he was on me so fast that my second went in the air. >> Okay. >> It was that fast. He was on my property. I stood my ground. I feared for my life. Period. >> Okay. >> Lloyd Preston Brewer III was convicted of first-degree murder for the shooting death of 21-year-old Garrett Hughes. He was also convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and a concealed firearm violation. And in February 2026, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole. So, what do you think? Based on what happened before the shooting and the surveillance evidence, was Brewer's claim of self-defense justified?
