Deputies are responding to reports of a man causing a disturbance by placing boulders in the roadway and tampering with fire hydrants. It sounds like one of those bizarre calls officers deal with every day, but before long they'll realize this suspect has no intention of going quietly. >> Shut that back. >> I got a friend here. >> Could you shut that up for me? >> I can't. >> What? TURN AROUND. >> WHAT STARTED AS A call about a man placing boulders in the roadway and tampering with fire hydrants quickly turned into something far more dangerous. Deputies arrived in Key Largo and found 58-year-old David Wyrick armed with a pocket knife refusing repeated commands. Every attempt to calm him down failed and as deputies moved in to take him into custody, the encounter spiraled into a violent struggle that no one at the scene expected. >> All right, we need to turn this guy out. He's He's a fighter. I can't see it on my right eye. >> He's beating the [ __ ] out of me. >> He's He's a fighter. DO IT NOW. PUT YOUR HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK. DO IT NOW. DO IT NOW. PUT YOUR HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK. DO IT NOW. ON THE GROUND. LEAVE IT THERE. DON'T MAKE ME TELL YOU AGAIN. Thank you. All right, let us grab him. bring him out to the street for a minute. >> I'm going to get on my knees if I can. >> Watch his feet. He kicks. >> Oh. >> Well, he's hitting the pavement. He wants to kick again. I'm just warning you, bud. >> Uh, I got hit in the head. I didn't want to tell y'all what they did to me, y'all. They [ __ ] me up. >> Step back. >> They beat me in the head. They beat me worse than a dog. >> You probably shouldn't resist the officers. >> I did. I got a dog. I got to give me up. >> Even after deputies deployed a Taser, Wyrick kept fighting. In the middle of the struggle, he grabbed a metal pipe with a nail attached and struck Sergeant Robert Dosh directly in the face. As officers fought to keep control, Wyrick also reached for not one, but two deputies' firearms. Thankfully, he never managed to pull either weapon free. With multiple deputies working together, they finally overpowered him and ended the assault before the situation became even more deadly. >> Yeah, I seen the guys running past me. I said, "Something's got to be going something." >> The call was coming eventually. Yeah. I mean, grab what you can. It doesn't look like it's controlled. >> It's saying >> I'm done. I'm done. >> Good. >> Saying it's kept though, but >> Okay. >> Hey, I just wanted to let you guys know that cuz when I was looking for his glasses, that that knife was by that fire hydrant. I didn't know it was his. >> No, that's all right. >> So, it's just for body cam. >> Yep, all good. >> They was giving it to him to tell me I just got a weapon. Then they told her to pick me up, hold my guns, then he going to sue me. Course I ran. He put a bullet in my head. I got to get some radiation. >> I understand, bud. >> I know I'm mad. >> All right, he was by the fire hydrant. >> I was not thirsty. No, Ryan. You got beat up. >> Once Wyrick was finally restrained, the focus shifted from stopping the attack to saving the injured sergeant. EMS rushed Sergeant Dodge to a nearby hospital before he was transferred to a trauma center in Miami for treatment to a serious eye injury. The suspect was taken to jail, bringing an end to a confrontation that serves as another reminder of how routine calls can become life-threatening in a matter of seconds. >> Any other injuries? >> All right, we seeing any more? >> Nope. >> Excellent, good. >> No, we saw this dirt. >> Okay, David. One, two, and then >> Somebody got gloves? >> Yeah. >> I got my gloves. >> I don't have gloves. Okay, David. Do you think you can take a couple of steps >> He needs decontamination, so you don't want to touch him with your hands. >> Okay. >> Do you have any universal precautions, do you know? >> I don't. >> You can just throw it on the ground and I'll I'll pick it up. >> Perfect. >> All right, come with me. >> All right, but we're going to have you sit on the stretcher. >> How do I help me now? >> All right, I'm I'm helping you. >> I I just now drank a water. You got to wait for it. >> You're going to try and put your two feet right here for me. >> Can I lay on my belly >> Somebody asking you to choke for that. >> I'm going to lay on my side, okay?
