That chilly night of December 31st, 2018 would be the night Army Sergeant Tyrone Hassel III was brutally and violently killed. He was a young man whose life was just starting to bloom. Tyrone's horrific murder would not only devastated the lives of his family, but reveal a shocking plot of deceit by the one person who was supposed to love him the most, his wife, Kemier. It was her lover, fellow soldier Jeremy Qua, who would provide the ultimate act of treachery. Tyrone Hassel III, started out in Benton Harbor, Michigan, in a poor neighborhood that was full of crime. Despite this, Tyrone worked through it and improved his life. He worked hard and did well in school and sports. He was a top student and athlete, competing in both track and baseball and focusing strongly on his studies. Tyrone's talent was observed. He graduated in 2013 from high school with honors and was awarded a scholarship to Grand Valley State University where he studied mechanical engineering. In 2015, Tyrone made the courageous decision to enlist in the US Army. His military career was nothing less than exceptional. He progressed rapidly, gaining respect from his comrades and superiors. In 2017, just 2 years into his service in the army, he was a sergeant, a rank that typically took 5 years to achieve. He had received numerous awards, including the Army Achievement Medal and the German Army Proficiency Badge. All agreed that Tyrone had a promising future ahead of him. While in the army, Tyrone met Kemier Martin, another soldier at Fort Stewart in Georgia. They were friends, and their friendship grew into love. They married in 2017 and had a son, Tyrone IVth, in 2018. Tyrone's family described him as a doting husband and dedicated father. He had everything going for him, a good job, a good family, and the respect of everyone around him. Yet, the people that were supposed to help him, his wife and her boyfriend, were the ones who would ruin everything for him. Tyrone returned home to Benton Harbor in December 2018 to see his parents for the holidays. It was meant to be a positive experience, allowing Tyrone to spend some time with his family. He went to see his father, Tyrone Hassel Jr., and talked about his life, job, and future. He was happy, satisfied with the course his life was taking. At this time, though, Tyrone had no way of knowing that a poorly planned scheme was being developed behind his back. As midnight approached, Tyrone left his parents house to bring food to his family. It was 11:00 p.m. on New Year's Eve, just before the start of 2019. Tyrone walked out of the house carrying a bag in his hand and went to his pickup truck, which was parked in the driveway. But as he walked, a dark-coled car pulled up, and the report of multiple gunshots shattered the silent night. Tyrone was hit and shot four times, two in the head, one in the neck, and one in the shoulder. Within a matter of moments, Tyrone's life was over. Back home, waiting for him was his wife, Kemier. She heard the shots being fired and called 911 right away. She was scared and upset as she yelled for help. The emergency services got to the location, but it was too late. Tyrone was already dead. Kermier was upset and said she had no idea who would want to kill her husband. She was inside the home with their son when the shooting occurred. In the first few hours after the shooting, detectives were confused. Initially, they thought the killing might be a robbery that had gone wrong. Tyrone had a nice truck and he was also wearing jewelry. But when they got to the crime scene, something wasn't right. Tyrone's wallet, phone, and keys were all still on his body. There was no sign of robbery. Something did not feel right. Five bulletshells and one bullet were found at the scene by detectives, and there were also holes in a fence and garage door in the area. One witness said they saw a dark-coled car on Gerald Street at 9:30 p.m. and a male got out of the car. A K9 unit tracked a scent from Tyrone's truck to the same street where they found a new bootprint, but the scent ended there. These results pointed to the attack being premeditated and not random. Detectives next focused on Tyrone's younger brother, Benny, who was associated with a tough group of friends. They initially thought the killing might be a case of mistaken identity. Someone who wanted to kill Benny but murdered Tyrone instead. However, they quickly abandoned this idea after talking to family and friends. The case was now growing cold. Then someone anonymously provided a tip. A tip that would change the course of the investigation. On January 11th, 2019, 11 days after the murder, an anonymous caller contacted the authorities asking them to look into Kimia Hassel and her boyfriend Jeremy Quellar, who was a fellow Fort Stewart soldier. The caller referred to their love affair and Quellar's past threats to Tyrone, shifting the case from a cold case to a targeted conspiracy. The caller told us that Keir had gone on a date with another soldier, Jeremy Quillar. According to the informant, Quillar had threatened Tyrone before. This piece of information directed investigators interest towards Quillar who was serving with Kemier and Tyrone at Fort Stewart in Georgia. As police investigated further, they discovered an elaborate web of lies. They found that Kemier and Quelar began their relationship when both were in South Korea. Kemier and Kuella started a secret relationship while deployed in South Korea for 9 months from February to October 2018. They were both assigned to Tyrone at Fort Stewart. This affair took place in the close confines of military life and led to their murderous conspiracy. The affair had gone so far that they planned to murder Tyrone. The motive was not just cheating. It was the $400,000 life insurance policy that Keemia would gain upon Tyrone's death. The affair and the lure of money then became the central motives for the crime. Further investigation showed that Quaer had bought a Glock firearm the day before the murder. A friend of Tyrone's informed investigators afterward that Quaar had threatened to kill Tyrone in the weeks before the shooting. However, it was not only Quaar's actions that made it clear he was guilty. Kemier's involvement in the plot was just as strong. The authorities revealed that Kemier was in constant communication with Quaar in the days preceding the murder. Phone records showed that the two had constantly communicated, planned, and coordinated. Kemier had also bought ammunition for the Glock pistol that Quela used in the shooting. Quar was arrested on January 11th, 2019 in Georgia. On January 14th, 2019, the police searched Quela's car and found bullets and a magazine. A day later, they searched his home in Hinesville, Georgia, and found a Glock 23 Gen 4.40 caliber pistol, which is thought to be the gun used in the homicide and confirmed that he was the shooter. Kia was also questioned in Michigan. She again claimed not to have been involved, but the proof was quite strong. The police laid out the phone records, the purchase of ammunition, and details about her relationship with Qua. Kima started to break down. Kimir took a lie detector test on January 11th, 2019, and it revealed that she was telling lies. When presented with phone records, the gun she had purchased, and details of her affair, she admitted that she and Queller had been plotting the murder of Tyrone for months. They wanted to get a $400,000 life insurance payout and proceed with their affair. Kima would stage the murder to look like a random act by staying inside and dialing 911. Facing reality, she confessed that she and Quellia had been planning to kill Tyrone for months. The plan was carefully designed to make Tyrone's murder look like a senseless random act of violence. Kia was a part of the scheme. She remained indoors at the time of the shooting, providing her with an excellent alibi. When Tyrone was murdered, she made the 911 call, acting sad and surprised, but secretly she knew what had occurred. Quellar was arrested soon after Kemier had confessed. Kemier was arrested on January 12th, 2019, the day of Tyrone's funeral, adding a layer of betrayal as she had been helping plan the service while concealing her role in his death. The timing left Tyrone's family already grieving in profound shock. He was taken into custody and like Kemier denied involvement at first. It did not take long, however, for him to admit to the murder. Quedar told the detectives in detail how he carried out the plan. He told them how he waited for Tyrone to come outside and followed him into the driveway. Once Tyrone was outside, Qua started shooting and fired several shots into him. He even stood over Tyrone's body and fired one last shot into him to make sure his victim was dead. Kemier and Quua were both charged with murder. The trial was the next phase of the case. Based on Kemier's confession, phone records, and the physical evidence at Quayar's residence, the prosecution's case was solid. Kmier's defense sought to establish that she was a victim, maintaining that Quaar had forced her to be involved in the murder. The prosecution further stated that Kermier was also a key player in the crime since she was driven by the prospect of money and had a relationship with Quya. In July 2019, the trial began. Kemier took the stand, still insisting that she was controlled by Quaar. Her defense also tried to argue that her husband abused her, but there was no proof to back up this claim. On July 18th, 2019, after just a few hours of deliberation, the jury delivered a verdict. Kima was guilty of firstdegree planned murder and conspiracy to murder. Her sentencing was on August 29th, 2019. In 2022, Kia requested to appeal her conviction. She claimed her attorneys did a poor job since they failed to present a battered partner syndrome defense or on November the 2nd, 2022, the Michigan Court of Appeals denied her appeal and upheld her life sentence without the possibility of parole. The courtroom was filled with emotion as Tyrone's family struggled to process the betrayal they had just uncovered. His father, Tyrone Hassel Jr., sat in shock, unable to believe that the woman he had invited into his family was the one who took the life of his son. Quellar accepted the plea agreement. As of 2025, Kamir is serving life imprisonment at the Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Pittsfield Charter Township, Michigan. Quellar is serving 65 to 90 years at Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility in Michigan. Tyrone's young son, Tyrone Hassel IV, is now being raised by Kami's mother, and the Hassel family is staying connected through FaceTime calls. Kemier's betrayal deepens the family's grief, as she was once a trusted daughter-in-law welcomed into their home. This case shows how low people will go for money, revenge, and personal gain. Tyrone Hassel III devoted his life to his country and his family, but he was betrayed by the same people he was supposed to trust. His legacy however continues to live through his son who will one day learn the sad truth about his father and the woman who took him from the world. The Tyrone Hassel the third story is about betrayal, greed, and the cost of ambition. It affects us deeply and reminds us that sometimes the most dangerous threats come from individuals we know all too well. And that's it for today's story.
