What started as a routine school traffic stop quickly spiraled out of control after a driver repeatedly ignored an officer's commands during pickup traffic. But moments later, the situation escalated even further when police say the woman suddenly attempted to drive away from the stop. >> We're in line, sir. >> But you're still stopped in the middle of the road to pick up cars. You're not allowed to do that. License and registration. >> I don't have my mother. I don't >> You have a driver's license, right? If you do it, everybody else starts doing it, and then >> I will do it if everybody stop getting in front of me. >> If you do it, I have to let everybody else do it. And when everybody else does it, then this there's no moving traffic. There's a reason why there's a dismissal. That's why you're supposed to go in the school and pick up your kids. There's a reason for that. >> What's happening? >> I'm not picking up. I'm just a guest. >> So, you're going to honk the horn at me while I'm working? Give me your license and registration. I'm not talking to anybody right now. I need your license and registration. Excuse me, you're fleeing and eluding. >> At this point, the encounter had already become tense after the driver repeatedly refused to provide her information to the officer. But once the woman drove away from the scene, deputies immediately began treating the situation as a much more serious offense. >> License and registration. License and registration. License and registration and get back in the car. >> 414 you're out of the car. >> What? >> 414 I have her stopped. She exited the vehicle. She's not listening to lawful instructions. I'm writing a ticket and she starts honking the horn at me. Right after I she starts honking the horn at me. So I go up to her. I go, "Is there an issue?" >> They're flying for you. 22, show your route to this 317. >> Yeah, they they couldn't get everything. No, I did. So, give me a minute. That's a 17. For real? >> Yeah. >> I'm going to I'm going to need someone to take this. I go up to her. She honked that horn at me like five times. I go, "Ma'am, is there a problem?" She's like, "Oh, I want to talk to you." I go, "You don't honk at a police officer because you want to talk to them. Give me your license and registration." So, I went, I get finished my 19, I go back to her. I asked for her license and registration, she said, "No." And she took off. And so, now I have her stopped here. I told her to get back in the car, she didn't want to get in the back of the car, I mean, back to her car. So, I put her in in cuffs and I put her in the back of mine. At the end of the day, that's fleeing and eluding and refusing to obey a police officer. And the horn. >> That's my case. >> Get out of the vehicle, please. >> Yeah, that's the car. >> I need to get her uh We're going to uncuff her to take her first stop on her. And then I need her license. >> Officers now warned the driver she was facing felony fleeing and eluding charges after allegedly ignoring lawful commands and attempting to leave the stop. As traffic backed up nearby, the situation rapidly shifted from a school traffic violation into a full custodial arrest. >> Stop stop trying TO SCARE HER TO ASK you a question. You don't have permission to go in my car. >> Wally. >> Rick, do you want to >> Yeah, I can't Yeah, actually you're going to jail. >> Is she the owner of the car? >> What? I think it's her her another person. >> They can't blame me this is happening to me. I was trying to register my daughter at the >> Sorry, I'm getting up. >> Now I know why she didn't want to give me her license. It's not valid. >> She got all the orders? >> Yeah, the whole school. I'm trying to see if I take it or if I I get one of the road I was in the middle of a traffic stop. Yeah, my car was over there also for the uh the traffic detail. for the school. She started honking the horn at me. I ignored her. She kept honking the horn honking the horn. She must have hit the horn at least eight times. >> Right. >> So now it's improper use of horn. >> Right. >> Because I'm in the middle of writing a citation and she's Yeah. You know, turning my attention from my 19 from her. >> Right. >> So I go over there. I ask her for her license and registration. I go I finish my 19. I go back to her and I ask her for her license registration. >> Right. >> She goes, "No, you're not getting it." >> Refuses to identify herself. >> And drives off. She makes a U-turn, drives here. She's stuck in traffic. I I conduct a 19. She comes here. And I tell her to get back in the car. She doesn't want to get in the back of the car. Ma'am, get in the back back She doesn't want to get in the car. Ma'am, this is my last warning. Okay, back in the car or I'm going to put you in cuffs. She didn't want to get in the car, I put her in cuffs. Fleeing and eluding, disobeying a police officer, improper use of horn, and now she has a suspended license. >> Investigators later discovered the driver was allegedly operating the vehicle with a suspended license, something officers believe may have contributed to her actions during the stop. What began as a minor traffic enforcement situation outside a school had now escalated into multiple criminal charges caught entirely on body cam footage.
