Richmond, Virginia. On May 7th, 2026, at approximately 6:47 p.m., emergency dispatchers received a frantic 911 call from a man reporting that he had heard a gunshot inside an apartment where 31-year-old Jasmine Wooden Mitchell was located. >> During the call, multiple voices could reportedly be heard in the background yelling for Jasmine to open the door. The caller told dispatchers they feared she may have shot herself and explained that nobody inside the apartment could get the door open. >> As officers were being dispatched to the scene, the situation escalated rapidly. >> A second 911 call came in just moments later reporting that a woman outside the apartment building was actively firing a gun. >> By the time Richmond police officers arrived at the apartment complex, panic had already spread throughout the property. Witnesses immediately pointed officers toward an upstairs section of the building while several residents could reportedly be seen running away from the area in fear. Police body camera footage shows officers moving quickly through the complex and climbing an exterior stairwell after hearing additional gunshots ring out nearby. According to investigators, Jasmine Wooden Mitchell allegedly fired multiple rounds in the direction of an apartment and toward the stairwell area where officers were approaching. The sound of gunfire intensified the urgency of the response. As officers advanced toward the upper level, one officer reportedly opened fire, striking Wooden Mitchell. The shooting brought the chaotic scene to an abrupt stop. Officers quickly moved in and secured the area before locating a handgun near Wooden Mitchell's body. Police then began rendering medical aid while awaiting paramedics. Despite those efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Get down. GET DOWN. GET DOWN. 214. Shots fired. 214. Shots fired. Investigators have not publicly stated how many shots were fired by either side, and the shooting remains under investigation. As with many critical incidents involving police use of force, body camera footage is expected to play a central role in determining exactly how the confrontation unfolded in those final moments. The tragedy has also drawn attention because of the personal circumstances surrounding Wooten Mitchell's life leading up to the shooting. According to reports, she was the mother of two children, including a six-month-old baby boy and a 10-year-old daughter whose 11th birthday had taken place just days earlier. Family members also revealed that Wooden Mitchell had experienced another devastating loss shortly before the incident. >> The father of one of her children reportedly died just one day before the shooting occurred. The emotional toll of those events has added another layer of heartbreak to an already tragic situation.
