Did she take out that sign? >> She took out the sign for the exit ramp over there. Yeah. >> Okay. >> Tonight, officers responded to a call about a 19-year-old female who had been driving under the influence. She lost control of her vehicle, crashing into a guardrail and a stop sign. Debris from the crash caused another vehicle to hit it, but fortunately, no one was seriously injured. When officers approached, the driver became emotional and started crying as she realized she was being arrested. >> How's it going, man? >> I called about um them a minute ago. I was right behind them uh going this way. I just looked back around to see if they were okay. >> Okay. Yeah, they're good. Um they're climbing EMS. Um do you know what happened? Well, I was I was coming back from the gym and um it it was a white 4ERunner, [Music] >> so I don't know. It was I saw them go down in the ditch and then they went up and across both lanes and into the median. >> Okay. >> But um I don't know. It scared me so bad. >> No, I I get it, man. >> I get it. So, but you saw this vehicle do just that. >> It wasn't It wasn't that vehicle. It wasn't that vehicle. >> It was a white 4Runner. >> Okay, we got one up there. >> Um, I'm gonna go talk with them. >> Okay. I was just checking. I'm sorry to bother you. >> You're good, man. >> Hey, were you guys involved? >> He I saw him coming right at my truck. He was coming over that medium and I don't know. I I did my best to make sure I steered clear of him. something from his vehicle or something from whatever he hit hit the truck, but I don't know exactly where. I just heard a big huge bang on it >> and I don't see I mean I don't see any dents and I don't know about the windshield. >> All right. >> But he scared me. >> I got you >> half to death. >> I got you. If you just hang out over there, ma'am, in case one of these other cars hits, I don't I don't want you to get get hurt. Um, I'm not seeing really anything. And this is kind of a bad spot to just have you look, like I said, I don't want one of these vehicles end up rear ending you and then vaulting the vehicle into you. Um, >> are they okay? >> Yeah, they're they're okay. Um, >> that's that really scared me. I saw It was like this. I was coming this way. >> Let's stand on the other side of this door. >> Saw the the light. >> Uhhuh. >> Literally coming at me. I was coming this way. Normally I drive on this side cuz I've had too many deer run into me, right? >> I know. Stay away from the side. So I as soon as I saw the lights coming, I moved out of the lake. >> Yeah. And then I got back in to get over, but I saw him just wrapped up in all of that. I >> I got you. All right. Um here, I'm going to get your license plate and some information from you and then we'll just kind of go from there. >> Do you need my driver's license? >> Yes, ma'am. If you have it. Okay. >> But it was I mean it's dark out. I can't really see. >> Yeah. So, I know there was something that came flying across it. They could have hit a rock. I mean, that could have been >> there. There was a lot of debris up there. It could have been any number of things. >> So, that could have been what flew across and hit. >> Okay. >> You know, >> and uh you saw the vehicle coming through back there. >> I saw him. Yes, he No, no, he moved down a little farther. >> Okay. So, where whereabouts did you see him leave the roadway? >> Oh, good grief. Um, I would have to walk down that way. >> Just a best estimate. >> Um, okay. Maybe one or two before where he ended up. >> Okay. >> Something like that. And did they >> she would these things there was there was another car that after that I was sitting here they were down there >> they saw >> Okay. Did uh did they ever end up in this part of the roadway coming towards you or was it just from the side >> that you saw? >> I saw them from the side actually on that. >> Okay. >> So I mean it was that scared the heck out of me. Yeah. Um, all right. Well, I'm going to go up there and talk to my other officer. Um, just hang out for me and then I'll be back and talk. >> Do you have your driver's license? >> Yeah, I do. >> All right. Can I see it, please? [Music] Yeah, >> we're we're on the loop. >> We're on the loop at Taly Road. Awesome. Thank you much. >> All right. It's just something I ask everybody that's been in a big accident. Nothing to drink, anything like that tonight. Right. Okay. All right. Awesome. If you want to just hang out with your car, I'll be right back with you. Okay. Do you need an ambulance? All right. Would you check if uh that vehicle, their driver, if that's the one that's had a drink? >> Central, do you know which driver the reference about the drink was for? Thank you. Watch your step over here. There's a bunch of holes. I don't want you to roll your ankle. Here's your driver's license. Can you step it back over here with me? >> Yeah. >> That way we're on some more level ground. >> All right. Can you explain to me why it happened again? >> I'm sorry. >> It's all right. >> So I turn this way and then >> Okay. How much you had to drink tonight? I'm an empty drink. >> Okay, don't lie to me. All right. I smell the alcohol off of your breath. How much have you had to drink tonight? >> Okay. Why do you lie to me? >> All right. You care if I check your eyes. Make sure you're okay to drive. That's okay with you. >> Well, I can drive. >> Well, I I know you can't drive now, but you do you care if I check your eyes? >> Yeah, of course. >> Okay. All right. We'll just face away from the lights. So, just just the way you are. Just stand with your feet together, arms down to your side for me. Okay. Look right here at this red light for me. Follow it with your eyeballs and your eyeballs only. Don't move your head. Okay. >> Keep your head perfectly still for me. Okay. >> Do you wear contacts or glasses? Yeah. All right. Here's a case card. It's got my name, uh, badge number, and case number associated with this. I won't be primary on this, but if you have any questions regarding it, or if anything comes up, go ahead, reach out, and I can give you any more details. Report for it will be ready approximately, I don't know, 6 to seven business days. Um, you can also request a copy of the report via the open records act at our east precinct. Um, other than that, do you have any questions for me? >> No, sweetie. I don't. They're they're okay. >> Yes, ma'am. She's going to jail. >> Oh. >> Yes, ma'am. >> I was lucky. >> Yeah. Yes. >> Okay. Um, honestly, it's a great thing, you know, that you weren't really involved in an accident because it could have tor turned out a lot worse. It was more than likely just debris in the roadway that your car hit. Um, which saves a whole lot with the insurance purposes, all that. Um, insurance rates going up for essentially nothing. So, uh, save there. And I'm just glad that you weren't hurt and nothing worse came out of this. But do you have any questions for me, ma'am? >> No, thank you. But thank you, sweetheart. >> Yes, ma'am. I hope you have a better night. >> I do, too, baby. >> Up and down. Okay. If you need to take a break, close your eyes. You're good. Um, I can't really do much more testing right where we're at and there's not a good safe place to do it. Okay. Um, but so I I need you to do me a favor. Place your hands behind your back. Okay. Right now, you're under arrest for driving under the influence. Okay. >> Yeah, I'll grab it all for you in just a second. Okay. >> I'm not >> You don't have to say anything right now. Okay. Give me just a second. >> You don't have to talk right now. Okay. Okay. >> All right. You're good. >> Okay. So, I'm going to read something to you. Okay. I'm going to read a few things to you. >> The first one's The first one's quite important. Okay. So, I need you to just pay real close attention. How old are you? >> I'm 21. >> You're 21. Okay. >> All right. The state of Georgia has conditioned your privilege to drive upon the highways of this state. Upon your submission to state administered chemical tests of your blood, breath, urine, or other bodily substances for the purpose of determining if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If you refuse this testing, your Georgia driver's license or privileged to drive on the highways of this state will be suspended for a minimum period of one year. Your refusal to submit to blood or urine testing may be offered into evidence against you at trial. If you submit to testing and the results indicate an alcohol concentration of 0.0, 08 gram or more. Your Georgia driver's license or privilege to drive on the highways of the state may be suspended for a minimum period of one year. You submit to the state administered chemical test of your blood. >> Okay. And I got one more thing to read to you. Okay. You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand that? >> This is a pleth. >> Huh? >> Right. Is is this a pleth? >> Well, I mean this is covering your fifth amendment rights. Yeah. Um so you have the right to remain silent. Do you understand that? >> Mhm. >> Okay. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. Do you understand that? >> Yes. >> Okay. You have the right to talk to a lawyer and have him or her present with you while you're being questioned. Do you understand that? >> All right. If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer, one will be appointed to represent you before any questioning if you wish. And you can decide at any time to exercise these rights and not answer any questions or make any statements. Do you understand those rights? >> Okay. With those rights in mind, do you care to answer some questions for me? >> Yeah. >> That's okay with you? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Where are you coming from? This is my apartment. >> Okay. How much did you actually have to drink? I know it's not one white claw. Okay. I'm not silly. >> It really is because I went to go to >> uh soccer try out >> so I could work there. >> Okay. >> And then after that I went back to my place. >> Mhm. >> To stay there cuz they wanted me to come back in the morning afterwards. >> Okay. How much did you drink? >> I said I'm sorry. No, it was only one white claw. >> It's not one white claw. All right. I know it's not. Okay. So, how much was it actually? I mean, if you say four or five, then I'll believe you then. But it's not one. >> No way. >> It's not one. >> You're almost falling over right now off of one white claw. >> I'm standing straight up. >> Yeah, but you should see yourself right now. Your body looks like this. You're just constantly doing this and you don't realize it, but you're doing that. And when you get out of your car, you're like having to hold on to the side of your car to not just completely face plant. All right? And the odor of alcohol in your breath is very, very, very strong. Okay? I can smell it from like 5t away from you. All right? And I've got a stuffy nose. Okay? So, with a stuffy nose, and I can smell it 5t away from you, one white claw is not going to do that. All right? So, DUI enforcement is my specialty. It's what I do for work. Okay? And I've arrested hundreds. All right. And I know what one white claw looks like and I know what five looks like. All right. Maybe you're a small girl. Maybe is three or four. But one there's there's no way unless you didn't eat anything in the last two days and then chugged a white claw. All right. But so how much did you actually have? >> I swear I really have two white claw. >> Okay. Well, see how it went from one to two now. I mean, so you've been lying to me and I I asked you >> I said two earlier. >> You told me one earlier. Well, first you told me nothing. I asked you how much you had to drink and you said you hadn't had a thing. So you've been lying over and over again. So that's all right, though. We're going to get you placed in the car. Okay. Um so that way we can get you sat down. I'm going to bring your phone and your wallet with us. Uh your keys are going to have to stay here cuz the tow truck's got to get your car. Okay. Do you have any keys on your key ring that you need tonight? for inside my house. >> Okay. >> Can you tell me which one's your house key on here? >> The most clear one. Like it's not messed up. >> Clean. >> Do you mind if I open your passenger side door and grab the can out? It's in there. >> Oh, you go in. >> Were you drinking while you were driving? >> I'm sorry. >> Lord have mercy. I had to go home. >> I talked before. >> You got yourself into a heap of trouble. >> This is This is not good. >> There's a lot of trouble. I >> There's a lot What? >> I've never been stopped before. >> Well, yeah. This is a This is a bad first stop. >> I know. >> Were your parents coming? >> Yeah, my dad's coming. >> Where's he coming from? >> Okay. Is that open or unopen? Uh, it's not open. >> All right. Was there an open one? Go ahead and search the car. You've got PC. >> Can you uh give me the key so I can lock it from the side? >> What's your dad's name? What's your last name? >> Kevin Harrow. My name is Leila Harrow. My name is Kevin Harrow. >> Hey there. Is this Kevin? >> Hey Kevin. This is Officer Haydenus with Athens Clark County Police. Hey, hang on just a sec. I'm trying to figure out how to turn the volume up on here. >> I got it. Okay. Can you hear me, Kevin? Officer, you're seeing us with Clark County Police. Um, unfortunately, your daughter is under arrest right now. Okay. She's drunk as can be. I'm sorry to tell you that. Um, she's safe, though. No injuries from what I can tell. It was a really, really bad wreck, but she is safe and healthy. I'm going to take her over to um I'll give you a call here in a little bit. Depending on how long the hospital takes, I might just cut her a citation and see if you guys can't come pick her up. Where are you guys coming from? Atlanta. I'll let the hospital staff know that she's okay to have visitors. If she does not go to jail, then I'm going to write her tickets and leave her at the hospital to be treated if there are any injuries. Okay. But as far as right now, she doesn't look injured at all. Yeah. If you want to go ahead and leave and come out here, um you can come on up to the hospital. So, I'm sure we'll be there for quite some time. So, come on, Chris. >> He's going to be so mad at you. >> He's going to be mad, but he's going to be glad you're alive. >> Yeah, he is. He didn't seem super mad on the phone. Here, just put your belly against right here for me. You have anything on you? You don't have any pockets, right? No. >> Okay. I'm just using the back of my hand just to make sure. >> Okay. >> Huh? Okay. Nothing in your bra? >> No. >> Okay. >> Huh? Well, I mean the sports bra. All right, take a seat for me. Okay. >> Yeah, I explained to him the wreck part earlier. She literally just went between the exit ramp and the uh loop went down the bottom of the embankment and was still carrying so much speed. She was able to drive back up the 15 20 foot embankment and come across and hit this. >> Oh jeez. >> Like I mean cuz it's not quite this tall. No, but it's it's still something. >> Maybe take 5 8 ft off of that, but I mean it's still >> it's still down there. And she was all the way at the bottom of it. She must >> Jeez. >> And then >> did she take out that sign? >> She took out the sign for the exit ramp over there. Yeah. >> How'd she She was all the way down and came like how did she come back up this cuz she came up that that much speed. Like I mean you want to >> you all right? Yeah. >> Okay. What's your name again? >> I'm Xander. Xander? >> Yes, ma'am. Nice to meet you. >> Nice to meet you. Unfortunate circumstances, though. >> She was transported to the hospital for a blood test. After the test, officers issued her a citation and released her. A scary situation, but thankfully, everyone walked away safe. What are your thoughts on this case?
