[screaming] >> She's got a bunch of bruises. Are you serious? >> is. And and that looks like to me like I got over here with Levi and Heather, the girl that watched him. She called me and told me he was unresponsive and I was working. I throwed everything down, went over there to get him and see what the hell's going on. I told her to call 911 and when we got him over to the hospital he has a bone in his collarbone and the doctor says somebody has grabbed him and shook him and his damn collarbone. And I was several times and it was what hurt. She got all this stuff, but I never seen that. child before. On January 14th, 2024, Suwannee County Fire Rescue received an emergency call telling something had happened to a 10-month-old baby boy named Levi who was left in the care of his babysitter, 39-year-old Heather Hogan, at her home. When the paramedics arrived, Levi was in the middle of a seizure. So they went straight to the father of the child to know what [music] actually happened. >> [crying] [screaming] [crying] >> I was working when I got there, that's when she called me and said she called me and said that he got up from a nap and he was unresponsive. I said, "Well, call 911." Oh, okay. So she called and then I flew from Lake City over there. Heather, the girl that watched him, she called me and told me he was unresponsive and I was working. I throwed everything down, went over there to get him and see what the hell is going on. I was trying to call 911 and we were guiding him over to the hospital. He has a broken his collarbone, and the doctor says somebody has grabbed him and shook him, and broke his damn collarbone. What? Yep. And then he's he's having seizures, or he's had a couple of seizures. So, they did a scan on his brain, and he doesn't have any They don't think there's nothing wrong with his brain. And they're fixing to try to get him transported to Shands, and he said he couldn't go there, that they got to go to Jacksonville. So, I'm just waiting right now. When I find out more, I'll let you know. I'm I have to I got to go home and clean up, and then whenever they decide to take him, then I'm going over there and stay with him. So, that's all I know up until right now. And they're doing an investigation to find out what the hell's wrong What what happened to him. I had somebody call me. I didn't know if it was the freaking sheriff or 911. When officers arrived at the hospital, Harris said his son was unresponsive when he got the call. He rushed there immediately, but by the time he arrived, Levi was already in an ambulance. Doctors said the baby had been shaken, suffering a collarbone and seizures. Brain scans were ordered with possible transfer to Shands [music] or Jacksonville. Levi was just 10 months and 8 days old. But what investigators were about to uncover was only the beginning. Brooke, you said you've been to this lady before. I've been to the house several times, and it was with her. I never seen that child before. I've been to her house several times. What's her name? What's her name? I had it written down. I don't know her last name. Heather. Is that her first name? But I don't believe her story at all. She said that the kid had fell off the couch, but I think she actually actually hit her. to several times. It's the way she was acting, and I've been there several times. I put her on child abuse hotline. She was agitated, very loud, and acting erratic and everything like And where is she at now? At the house. Who is this guy? That's the husband. Well, The dad. Yeah, but that So, Heather is a friend, but his wife is in jail. Okay. Yeah, very precise, very. Back at the scene, the officers were talking among themselves. One of them already knew this address. He had been there multiple times before, not for the child, for Heather. He said she was known for illegal substances. He didn't believe her story for a second. She said the baby fell off the couch, but the way he saw it, Heather choked that [music] kid. And what the investigation was about to reveal would prove he was right to be suspicious. No, I ain't talked to the dad yet. All right, up up here in a minute. Couple, not many. Just waiting on Get one of them out of his head. I've got I've got my front, no back. Hey sir, what's your name? Uh Wendall Ash. Wendall, can you come here for a second? Yeah. So, what's what's going on? Okay. Here's what's going on. His mama uh she violated her probation, so she got put in jail. Right. So, I've had about three people that's been helping me with him. Who are they? Uh Shannon, um Lance Bannister, the people that own Ken's Barbecue, Lake City. They helped me, and uh his aunt, Paula Ash, she helps me, and Heather. Heather who? I don't know what her last name is. >> know her last name, but you let her watch your kid? Well, I've known her for a long time. I can't remember what her last name is. Okay. Believe me, man, I wouldn't put my child in a situation Okay. No, I'm just asking the question cuz I'm I'm I'm telling you what's going on. >> Yeah. So, I'm listening. I I'm on disability. I don't get very much money at all. So, I do little side jobs here and there trying to make money. So, I made arrangements for her for her to watch him. Who's Heather? Heather. Heather. And he I was going to take him to Shannon's, but he was running He started running a fever, she said. >> When was this? Uh about a I think she said about a week ago or something he started running a fever. Who said that? Heather. And so, I went and got Motrin cuz he was teething. Uh-huh. And um I had him to the doctor and I had asked her cuz he was tearing at his ears, and the doctor told me that was from teething. And this was a week ago? That you took him to the doctor? No, he went to the doctor last month. I had the thing in the truck. It's in there somewhere. I can go get it if you want. Investigators pulled Harris aside and started building a timeline. Every person, [music] every place, every single day of Levi's life. Harris explained he was disabled and couldn't care for Levi alone while the child's mother sat in jail. So, he relied on a small group of people he trusted, Shannon, Paula Ash, and Heather, someone he had known for years. [music] But, the interview took a turn fast. Harris didn't even know Heather's last name. Yet, he had been leaving his 10-month-old son in her care. What he was about to find out would shatter [music] everything he thought he knew. So, a week ago he started running a fever. Heather says. Approximately. And Heather told you that? Yes. Okay. So, I went and got Moultrie. My arrangement is as they I work when I get done it's about 4:00 or 5:00, then I go over drive from Lake City over here and I spend a couple hours with him, you know, and then I go back home. Now, if it's like on a weekend or something like Sunday or something, I'll take him with me and we'll go eat lunch and do whatever. That's what I told him. Probably about 2 weeks ago I had him on Sunday. But, um I can't remember it's been about a week or so ago that he started teething and he was a little bit irritable. But, when I went over there last night he had I just bought him some clothes and he had a a Disney jacket like a fluffy one on. I couldn't see that. I have never seen that on his neck before. God is my witness. I'm telling you I've never seen that. If I did he wouldn't be there. >> What about the mark on his face? That I did the scratch, yeah, I saw that. She said >> there? Um she said that he was Well, he was tearing at his ear and I asked her I said, "Why is that? Why don't you, you know, trim his fingernails or whatever?" And she said, you know, she did trim his fingernails, but doctor told me that they will pull at their ear. >> So, you're claiming that she said that he was grabbing at his ears and that's what caused the scratches. That's what she told me. And cuz I did notice that last night when I was there and I asked her. I I I If I didn't know that it was on him, I'm telling you, there ain't no way in hell that he would have ever stayed there. No way. No way. Who is she to you? This is people I met, you know, her husband drives that Superman truck, you know, the Yeah. wrecker, big Superman wrecker. So, she's a friend of a friend. Well, I've I've known her. She's just a That's Goliath's wife. And I've known her. She's friends with my wife. And, you know, we just >> have you known her? Probably about 4 years or since I came here, 3 or 4 years, something like that. But, she's always Levi's always, you know, been good with her. There was no like, you know, I mean, he he I mean, they interact together good. You know? And, when I asked her a while ago about that, what was on him, she said that he had fell into something or whatever, but I didn't know that was on there. Had no earthly idea. >> What what What are you talking about fell? She said that he was in the bathtub or something, and he had fell You'd have to ask her. >> Are you talking about you just found this out now? Yes. When I I didn't When I got an email, she has this on him. I was like, "What the hell is that?" And, they said, "Well, that's what we want to ask you." I said, "I don't know. I said, you better ask her." And, I called her, and she's supposed to be coming down here. And, she claims it's from falling in the tub? I believe that's what she said. It's got to be a bruise. Are you serious? >> and it's I don't know what happened. And and that looks like maybe Cuz the What? Did somebody grab him? It's a bruise and it's all around his dick. Yeah, that's like that. And and it's it's it's a little white, so it looks like a little white So, it's So, it's it's a may not be today, but it could be something that's a little old. So, it may not be I'm not sure that it didn't just happen today. The questions turned to Levi's injuries. Harris said he had visited the night before, held him, fed him, dressed him, and [music] saw nothing wrong. Heather blamed it on teething, and he believed her, but the bruising told a different story. It wrapped from the shoulder up around the neck, consistent with a strong grip. This wasn't [music] recent. It had been happening for days, and that was only what was visible. >> Okay, so the day-to-day life thing, we did all this, or So, you said So, you got my nephew Friday, you worked, but you see him >> Every day I go over there. What time you see him? Every time? You see him during the evening. Yes. What about Saturday through Sunday? Yes. You see him just in the evenings? When I get done, I go over there, and I see him. If it ain't but for 30 minutes, I go over there. It ain't like that I have left. >> the last time he stayed the night with you? Uh that would have been when I told you on that Sunday. Um Last Sunday? No, it wasn't last Sunday. A week before that? Yeah, I think that's when it was. And you didn't notice anything? He didn't have none of that on him then. Cuz I changed his diaper. So, if they come back and they're able to tell when occurred, they're not going to say that it was in that 2-week time frame. Like, they're not going to say it was before the 2 weeks. It's all right. I haven't seen that. I'm telling you. When's the last time you guys seen him unclothed? >> a lie detector test right now. Hang on a second. We don't have that availability. When is the last time you seen him without any clothes on to change his diaper, to give him a bath, or anything? That's probably about 2 weeks ago, when when he was >> at your house? Yeah, I went and picked him up, and when I got done at the that Sunday, I didn't set up at the flea market. I just went out there and looked around and then I went and got him. So, if she ever called you and said, "I think she needs to go to the doctor. I think he needs to go to the doctor." Are you going to come and pick him up and take him to the doctor? >> No. Why not? She has never called You ask me if she's called me >> I'm saying if she If she called you and said Hell, yeah. Okay. Yeah. Uh she called me a while ago and says, um Well, she changed her story. Y'all heard it. She originally told me that he was in the crib and when she went in there, he was unresponsive, which I brought his playpen bed thing. Then Then she said that he was in the living room. I believe y'all heard her. I think that's what she said. And that then she went and laid him down and he was unresponsive. But as soon as she called me, I told her I said, "Why in the hell didn't you call 911 first then call me?" So, you're saying you went to the house first? Cuz we You're saying like we talked to her. We haven't spoke to her at all. Okay. Well, I was on the phone. I didn't know if you heard me. No. I was working in the shop where I live at. I was working on four-wheeler. She called me and said, "Levi's unresponsive." I said, "Well, call 911." And I dropped every damn thing and I hauled to them. And when I got there, they had just got him in the uh ambulance. But his damn caller phone's broke and this what he says it I want her put in jail. I had him last night. Uh I had him in my arms and I was holding and he went to sleep. He was never crying or nothing. He He was Yeah, he was fussy, but I gave him a bottle and then when I turned him over and I laid him like that, he sat there and looked at me for a long time and you know He ain't even fine. Yeah, you're fine. Let me tell you something, man. If I'd have known anything was going on with him, he would not be there. Officers had Harris walk through the last 2 weeks. The last time Levi stayed with him, there were no marks or everything after that, the collarbone, the the fractures happened while he was in Heather's care. Harris said he visited every evening after work, checking on his son before driving home. Then, Heather's story began shifting [music] during a single phone call with officers present. Crib, then living room. Harris questioned why she didn't call 911 first. Three versions, [music] one call, but the story was far from over. >> So, Megan, she smoke marijuana? Who? Megan. Megan? Or what what's her name? Uh Heather. >> Heather? Um I've never seen him smoking it. >> Do you smell it? Do you know what marijuana smells >> Sometimes, but that boyfriend that her daughter's got, I think he does. Um do you ever smell it in the house? >> No. >> Do you ever smell marijuana smell in the house? You have never seen them smoke marijuana. You never seen them in plain view going around >> If I did, he wouldn't be there. Well, he got marijuana in his system somehow. Well, he didn't get it from me. I understand that. That's why that's why I'm asking you. I have never seen them smoking pot. I've never in the house I have never smelled pot. I do know that the boyfriend of her daughter that um one time out front, there's like a gate and I smelled the odor by his car. Now, far as in there, if I know they would if they would the house smelled like pot, he'd never been in there. Believe that. And I'll take this test right now, or you can pull my medical records. I pee once a month as part of my uh medical plan to get my uh medications. So, I don't have a problem with that. I'll do it right now. Nobody else smokes that's ever watched him or anything like that? No. Absolutely not. I don't know. Got to a system somehow. So, either somebody's smoking right next to him or he's picked up these I hate it. She said something the other day and she didn't like complete it. But, what she told me was I thought this is what she said. I thought she said that she let her daughter take him somewhere. And I had told her that nobody has to take him nowhere but but you. And I And she said something and then she didn't say something about they went to get something to eat, her and her boyfriend. I don't know. But, I do know that I have never seen them smoking marijuana and I have smelled >> hindsight's 20/20. I mean, some things that might have been happening then was kind of popping in my head now saying, you know, you know, maybe a flag or something. >> Right. But, he loves Heather. I mean, Like what? What What are these flags? I just I might It was like she was the last especially for like the last 4 days when I went over there. One day when I went over there, she said, "Well, he's asleep." I said, "Well, I want to see him." So, I went in there in the crib and he was asleep. And it was for for like the last last night was the only night that I really, you know, she wasn't, you know, whatever. But, like 3 or 4 days before that, she was kind of I don't know how to say it, elusive or, you know, like she was like, "Well, he's sleeping." Or, you know, or something, whatever. And And I was like, "Well, I don't drive Black City over here, you know, to see him And I want to see him, but I didn't want to wake him up because I knew he was teething. Mhm. You know, and I swore to God on my life, man, I had no idea that was on his shoulder. I I none whatsoever. I know y'all have to do your job. I know people lie to you, but I'm telling you, as God is my witness, if I'd have known that and this other [ __ ] was going on, he would not have been there. And I do whatever the hell y'all want me to do. You want me to take a piss test, lie detector test, whatever it is. DCF will talk to you. They might want you to, I don't know. All right. We're not doing all that, but it's going to be it could be a long process, so. What? It It's not going to be a not a tomorrow thing. >> One of them did it. One Either Either Either Heather done it. I'm telling you who done it. It's either Heather, her old man, Heather's daughter, or her boyfriend. That's it. There ain't no other choices. Them the choices. One of them done it. >> We'll figure it out. We'll try to. Then, the investigation took a sharp turn. Baby Levi tested positive. Harris went silent. He said he never saw or smelled anything. Then, he remembered Heather's daughter and her boyfriend, and a smell near their car he ignored. He had made one rule, nobody takes Levi anywhere but Heather. Yet, they did without telling him. Looking back, he saw the signs he missed. [music] By the end, he didn't hesitate. It was Heather, her husband, her daughter, or the boyfriend. One of them done it. There ain't no other choices. Our lovely young baby sitter has obtained medical drugs by fraud. A what? The baby sitter has obtained medical drugs by fraud. Oh, that doesn't surprise me. She's a narcotics user, possibly. I don't know. Just as the investigation wrapped up, one final detail surfaced. Heather Hogan had been obtaining [music] prescription medications through fraud. Alone with a 10-month-old every day, it added a new layer to the case. In the end, Heather Hogan was charged with act abuse and neglect and booked into Suwannee County Jail on a $600,000 bond. Levi survived, [music] but the damage was permanent. He lost his eyesight and will carry the effects for the rest of his life.
